[Q] Anybody know how to install an alternative launcher into a custom ROM? - Defy General

Hi Folks,
I'm still working on perfecting my custom ROM from yesterday. You know, "T-Mobile Froyo 2.2.1 Firmware 3.4.2: Rooted - Deodexed - Overclocked/Undervolted".
First of all, let me just apologize for inflicting a half-baked experiment on all of you. I appreciated the props from some people, but really, I'm pretty embarrassed about the whole episode. I was up for about 36 hours doing the trial and error thing to get that far, and I was really proud of the results for a minute, until I realized that I made some pretty dumb mistakes.
Which leads me to this call out for help:
Can anybody give me a step by step guide on how to install an alternative launcher into the ROM alongside Moto Home? I've been scouring forums and wracking what's left of my brain to figure out a way to do this.
I'm almost there, I just need this one final bit. Any help?

Why not install it via the market?

Hey Sqoerk, thanks for replying, but please do re-read my question.
I thought I made it clear that I'm working on a custom ROM to share with everybody on the forum.
In order to do this, I'm looking for a way to bypass mandatory Motoblur sign-up, which is a problem of the T-Mobile USA Froyo firmware.
My bad if I didn't make that clear the first time....
ANYBODY???

SORRY A BIT LONG WINDED ... my question is this i want wifi tethering basicly i got the wifi tethering download from ... http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list?can=2&q=Evo ... is this all i need to open my wifi hotspot free???? and also since ive done all this reading and digging i found alot of info confusing and or unorginized sorry just hard to search and find things is all but i am also looking for a wolf theme set and a mod also but finding most themes in title only no pics and mods with no discriptions ... basicly is there one member with whom i my chat with to help with these issues and point the right way or place to find what im looking for???
sorry one more thing im also going to be activating my second line on my sprint account and getting another phone one with a full slide out keyboard and will need to do this with that phone as well .... what phone would be the easiest and best to do so with....
Yes, if you use the wireless / wifi tether app, you're set for tethering.
Also, if you want a theme made, go ask in the themes/apps section, they'll help you out there. I know billbowers does themes for a fact.
Also your root method will depend on the hboot, so check it before you root it, and do NOT any OTAs before you root.
Also, you'll have to do the appropriate root method for the extra phone.
Theres a few roms out there that has all that integrated into the rom and theres themes made already for those roms, heres a few threads that have what you want...

There's only 2 phones with slide-out qwerty keyboards at this time, running Android. The HTC Shift and the Samsung Epic. Shift you would be pseudo familiar with, being from the HTC lineup. Epic on the other hand may be a little different than what you have read so far, especially if the phone is running Gingerbread. Good luck.
thanks for the info and will follow up on the leads you have given very helpful thank you
sorry..

Sounds like a dirty flash. Did you start a fresh install, wipe everything, prior to installing the new one? If you just flashed over the other build, merging/meshing may occur, but at least it was usable.?

Hello everyone!

I just wanted to say hi to everyone, I have been jailbreaking iPhones and iPods for years but I decided to switch to an android so I went with a Galaxy S3
I am new to the ROM/rooting experience and I am looking forward to learning!
I did root the phone but I have not flashed any ROMS yet. I want to find the best one out there for the T-mobile S3 before I flash my first one. Could anyone tell me which, if any, improve signal strength? I have very bad signal in my area and was hoping that I could improve that this way, Gotta appreciate all of the developers who put so much time and work into this stuff for our benefit!
Well I would recommend Wicked rom if you want stock experience, if you want aosp, most are based on CyanogenMod 10 builds. If you want better reception, there is a flashable modem that SHOULD improve reception, but its dangerous I've read, I have not done that, but its what I've read. Some heads up tips, backup in recovery before flashing anything, read the original post of anything you'll flash and search before posting, you'll probably find what you need
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Where did you hear that flashing modems is dangerous? As long as you follow directions and don't use one for another device its really no more dangerous than flashing a kernel or recovery.
If you guys want to learn more about modems this thread is as good as any place to start!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1880987
Just please make sure you read and understand what you are doing before trying this or any other mod!
@op
The thread I linked to is stickied in the development section. Next to it is the firmware thread. I suggest keeping a copy of the stock fw on hand in case you run into problems. Sometimes odin flashing back to stock is the only solution.
There is no best rom. What is the best for you will most likely not be the best for me. You should get an idea of what you are looking for base-wise. Try a cm or aokp and see if you prefer it over stock. Say you prefer stock, then focus on the roms that are based on stock builds.
Read the op thoroughly! Find one that has features you want. Then while downloading read the first few pages and the last 5 or so pages to get an idea about any bugs or other info.
The rom you choose will rarely have any bearing on signal stregnth. There are lots of modems you can choose from.
Finally, do NOT flash anything that was made for another device!
Good luck and welcome!
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Well as actually you can flash most att ROMs to the t-999 as long as they are not updating the modem then you should be fine
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
I'd flash the cm10 latest nightly

Welcome all member of Xda-developers forum
Nice to meet you
As far as modems go it is going to be a testing process. While most modem updates are aimed at better signal it is not always the cases do to area. So what gives me the best signal my not get you the best signal so try one and run a speed test use it for a day then do another speed test before changing the modem again until you find what works for you.

I'll take a leap of faith. Which recovery are you using. What method did you use to flash recovery. If I were you I would start simple and flash a touch wiz 4.1.1 ROM. Also, 2 things to remember before someone else tells you. 1 - CAPS aren't necessary for someone to read your post. 2 - asking for a ROM recommendation is generally discouraged due to what I like may not be what you want, per xda rules. For rom info just goto the development section and read. Find one you are interested in. Make a backup using your recovery method, follow guidelines set by developer and flash. Google and you tube are your friends when learning to flash. You might want to find a app backup utility like titanium backup to restore your apps after you flash your new ROM. Then read, read, and read some more and when you think your ready read again. Flashing wrong ROM can cause a bricked (locked and unusable phone). Also, if you were sorry for the caps you could have change prior to submitting post. Good luck.

Installing Stock ICS ROM

Hey community,
I am still a newbie to HTC, Flashing, Custom ROMs and rooting in the first place.
I managed to install a custom ROM a while ago, now I wanna go back to the stock ROM (ICS - Icecreamsandwich 4.0.4)
What I need now, is the orignial stock ROM, which I am not really sure where to find via google etc. (Since i found hundreds of different links everywhere)
Further I'd like to know how to install it correctly. Can i just put it in my storage, and flash it via the phone?
Or do I need any special software or anything else?
I hope you can help me and explain the process nice and easy, since I don't have much experience as mentioned before.
Greetings,

[Q] Noob Feast Here

Hi Everyone,
As the title says I am a noob to rooting and have been researching the various roots, kernels, roms and add on packs, and some answers on what would be the best package for my phone to accomplish the results of what I would like to do,
My Phone Specs:
Samsung Galaxy SII
SGH-T989 (T-Mobile)
4.1.2 (Android Version)
3.0.31-1003885 (Kernel Version)
What I would like to accomplish is remove a bunch of bloatware that came with phone (mainly all of the T-Mobile bloat)...and I would like to connect my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Tablet to the phone and be able to use the phones data connection as a wifi connection via usb tethering.
There it is, let the feast begin...
Thxs in advance for all the answers and comments

This link will help you how to root. Before you click on it and follow the steps, when you get to step 13, skip to step 18, and then go back to step 14, but skip 18 this time around. This makes a nandroid backup of your ROM (Recovery Menu > Backup).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2195283
After you've rooted, download "Root Browser" or something similar to that from the Play Store.
After starting Root Browser up, browse to system/app. Then there will be a load of apps there. Simply click on it and select uninstall.
Be sure to know what you're uninstalling. If you mess up, just restore from the backup you made earlier in recovery.
As for your second option, I'm not sure how to help you with that, sorry!
Good luck!
EDIT: I found a person you had a problem while he was rooting. This thread will take you there and show you he solution as well

CyanogenMOD is probably still the biggest, and if you're new to custom ROMS and rooting, it helps to be able to Google for answers. I see Jedi around a bunch here too, so you'd probably be okay getting help here, but I don't know much about it (I stick with CM). The latest out is CM 10.1 (which is Android 4.2.2).
Another step (once you get confident with using the various ROM/rooting tools) to fine-tuning your phone is updating your radio, and there's an excellent thread with the radios listed for the T989 here.

Yup he's right CM is the biggest in custom ROMs but you can start off with the ROMs based on stock like Jedi, Infamous, & Northern Touch, etc.
Then after you become comfortable with flashing you can move onto AOSP ROMs.
Have fun flashing

Welcome to XDA my friend!! Alright first off themes and ROMs are two completely different things. Themes are just skins you can swap in and out on your phone without changing any software. ROMs replace phone software with newer versions. If you would like to get a theme I suggest downloading this app called Themer by MyColorScreen. For ROMs you will need a custom recovery like ClockworkMod or TWRP. I am currently using CWM (ClockworkMod). Using the CWM recovery you can "flash" roms (basically installing them). I am currently running 4.4 QuantumROM by PwnCakes. It is beautiful!! If you would like to theme go with the Themer app but if you wanna go further than just reply here!!

If you want to start out with themes go to the Play Store and ckeck out Colbalt themes by dustinb. They come in many colors for cm 9 & 10. I also liked killer blue, has nice graphics. If you are going to flash roms use the CWM recovery. Not as pretty as TWP but TWP is not compatable with 4.4. Also i am currenty favor the PAC man rom. Nice, fast and stable. It is a 4.3 rom. I have tried a few 4.4 roms but a little unstable for a daily driver. Also.if you start with the PAC rom it is a hybrid and has several varieties built in and has tons of options to play with.
Thank you both for the help. I will probably just start out with different themes until I understand ROMs a little more. :good:
Rooted Need to get CWM
Hi everyone,
Complete Noob here. Just rooted my I747-M AFTER getting 4.3 OTA using Mr. Robinson's root method! Don't know what to do after this step.
How do I get CWM? Can I flash it through Odin?
Also is it possible for me to get CM 11? I really don't like the Samsung OS.

Hey there, first off you are on 4.3 OTA. So if anything goes wrong you may not be able to revert back to stock, it comes down to your bootloaders. Also go on over and check out QuantumRom by PwnCakes. It is 4.4 and is just beautiful. To get CWM go to the play store and download the cwm recovery app.
Thanks for the Response

Hey,
Thanks for replying. So I can't get the Recovery App because it does not support my phone (AT&T). So I ended up using terminal and the .img file to get CWM onto my phone. So is it possible to get CM 10.2 then?
Will a release come out later allowing me to revert to stock? In the meantime can you walk me through CM?
Thanks so much from this hopeless noob.
First off, welcome to XDA. Like everyone else has said, Quantum is the way to go. For good themes, Mianogen and Gem Flat are my favorite. There's a free version of Mianogen and a paid, and for Gem Flat, it's $1.88, but well worth it. If you wanna give it a shot, custom icon packs are also really nice. Mianogen comes with its own icons, but hands down, Nox by Kovdev is the best with 1000s of really nice icons.

The app for CWM is called ROM Manager, for now, I don't know about the 4.3 update since I've been on Quantum for a few months. What would you like to know about CM? Its the easiest ROM to learn to use and is close to vanilla, while still being useful.

This post makes absolutely no sense. First you mention themes for a custom rom, which the op and question at hand obviously have no experience with. Secondly blindly stating that TWRP doesn't work with 4.4 is beyond ridiculous seeing as I just flashed Beanstalk 4.4 today just fine with TWRP 2.6.1.1. It is wonderful that you are trying to help someone with a problem or question, but i makes me sick when people casually throw out advice without any regard to the issue at hand or the ramifications of their words.

I Somewhat agree, IIRC, TWRP became compatible with 4.4 about a week or so after 4.4's release, right? As choosing one or the other, I've never even tried TWRP, but I've never had any issues with CWM, so I'm happy. And as for the ROM, I think the simpler it is, the easier it is to get used to. Sometimes having hundreds of customizations can be a bit overwhelming.

Personally i was using CWM recovery when it was the only option besides stock, and it always did a fine job at what it was intended to do. In the last year or so i started using TWRP solely for the purpose of its free touch based UI. Yes you can find CWM touch on the net for free, but they are asking for payment for it so i opted out. Both work great at what they do, and although one or the other may lag a bit from time to time keeping up with changes in the android world, as fast as things move these hiccups are to be expected.
