[Q] What does flashing radios do? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

question says it all. ive flashed quite afew roms on a telus samsuing galaxy s fascinate and quite afew on a htc desire but i never understood what flashing a radio did so ive always avoided doing it [and the rom still works mint]. what are the postitives and negatives of new radios?

Ever thought of actually searching rather than asking silly questions??

Positive is the possibility of better reseption and battery life(you should be able to find better descriptions quiet easy), negative is the total brick if you do it wrong.
What radio/smallband and rom are you on now?

if that is the baseband im on 32.49.00.32u_5.11.05.27

As Theghost said, some radios will increase your battery life and give better reception or a faster GPS lock, others drain battery a bit more. I've been running the newest radio for a while now with Oxygen RC7 and my battery life has been pretty awesome. Great reception too. It's very easy to flash a radio too, you can do it from Fastboot or from recovery (unless you're using a HBOOT that doesn't have enough space for flashing from SD).

[Q] Poor battery life with non Sense ROMs

Dear all,
I have a EURO Desire Z.
When I use a Sense based ROMs (in fact, stock or Virtuous) I have a fairly nice battery life, that is, in the 30 hours range.
However, with any kind of CM6 or CM7 (or even Vilain ROMs), the battery life is really reduced. Like 12-15h max (almost without any use).
The battery monitor will show that most power is eaten by Cell Standby, Wifi and Bluetooth. I tried different radios, but the result is still the same.
Any idea on what may be wrong ?

How is this development again? You even preface your post title with [Q].....Get in the Questions and Answers section you nub.
Wrong section, buddy.
For the record, I get like 28 hours running VilliamRom 1.5.
I have better batterytime with cm 6.1 and gingervillain 1.4.
Have you tried using interactive governor?

Wrong section.... but on subject using the g2 I have noticed sense based roms have better battery life as well which confuses me because for every other phone I've had sense has drained more battery... gingerbread roms are better on battery but still not as good as virtuous .90 with the advanced kernel. Gingervillain has the second best battery life I've experianced though

I apologize for using the wrong forum (most of discussions regarding alternative ROMs happen here, so I didn't really think about going elsewhere).
I'll reposte in the right one, and hopefully get some relevant answers.
I'm seeing the same thing with my G2. I really want to use CM6.1.1 but it just burns through my battery and I haven't been able to figure out why. With the stock G2 ROM I got pretty good battery life. With CM6.1.1 I would burn through 10-15% in 2 hours with almost no use. Stock I would be running Audible all day checking email etc and would use 40% in 10-2 hours at most.

[Q] Latest, safest radio for Telus DHD?

What is the best radio for the Telus DHD? Im having battery drainage issues
bump.
would like better battery life
I would also like to know the Safe radio options for Telus DHD
I have seen a few dotted around and some that are reccommended to gain the best peformance with specific roms (revolution for example) But i know changing the radio can sometimes be risky.
Thanks in advance.
oh and equlizer have you tried wiping battery memory, that worked a charm for me...
yep, battery issues fixed

Glad to hear it!
Ive been trying to find posts with people advising against radio, or recommending the best fit (or general) radio compatibility with the Canadian Version of the Phone but i'm having no luck,,,
So far are the DHD radio's have the ability to be rolled back without issue?
Are there any specific radios that seem to brick the canadian version of the DHD?
does anyone have a definate answer?!
I think it depends on which rom you are using

Hi,
My radio is 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M and I installed a Stock-rooted Gingerbread ROM.
It came with a radio but I didn't flash it (Mabe I was scared or just wanted to test the ROM first who know...) the fact is since then, my battery life as improved and the radio signal is good enough that I didn't flash it.
(24-32 hours of autonomy with a good use of my device)
Should I think again and flash the new radio anyway ?

Radio (12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M)
I live near Ottawa, but in a lower reception area, and I have been trying radios trying to get a good mix of reception and battery life.
Currently I'm using "Radio_12.35d.60.140f_26.06.03.24_M2 - TELUS WWE 1.84.661.1" and the corresponding RIL on Leedroid GB rom. It seems ok for now, but if anyone has tried a bunch of radios and can suggest their own best results for us Canadian desire owners, I would be much appreciated!
a fellow telus dhd owner here in edmonton. i'm using the latest radio (check sig) with g ril on cm7 with great results. i was using hm ril's for a bit and the device had very poor performance (calls cutting in and out, slow gps sat lock, wifi/3g sporadic disconnect/reconnect, etc). all that has been remedied by just flashing a g ril instead of a hm ril.
i think it'd be good to remind everyone that matching your radio and ril to your rom type (i.e. sense vs asop) is also important. from what i've read, use g for asop and hm for sense roms. it sure made a difference for me.
Thank you for the good advice. I switched up to the newest radio and ril and they seem the best for me I am still interested to know what others agree having success with here in Canada

I'm a fairly new user, got my Telus DHD (first Android) in the beginning of april, I live in Montreal, and took the entire phone apart within the first week. Tried a whole bunch of roms, then learned the hard way that Sense roms are like beautiful girls in bars at 2 am, they get you excited at first but then it's all disappointment... Lately I've been playing a lot with cyanogen nightlies, and I've been trying to find the best battery life possible.
So far the best I got was CM7.1 RC1 with Radio_12.35d.60.140f_26.06.03.24_M2 - TELUS WWE 1.84.661.1
That would last me over 35 hours very consistently with heavy use, screen on and lots of data (3G)
I tried pretty much all other radios on the latest nightlies (right now #170) and haven't found anything as good as 26.06.03.24_M2. I am in the process of reflashing that one while on this nightly to see if things will go back to what I had.
When you know your rom (and apps running) are not draining the battery, is the radio/ril the only other variables that affect battery life ? In other words, would the same radio/RIl drain the same regardless of the rom you're using ?
(forgot to mention I flash Alienmind's stuff over that, so I also use LordModUE v6.9.2 kernel and I change the OC to 122min/1.3max and use Brazilianwax (that governor seems so far seems to be the best)

[Q] Reasons for flashing a new radio

Hi All,
I have a rooted Desire HD with Radio S-OFF and ENG S-OFF. I am running the latest Gingerbread Coredroid ROM on the UK T-Mobile network.
The radio on my phone is Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26_M.
I have no issues with signal strength, wifi, etc.
Is there any benefit to flashing my radio to the latest recommended one: Radio_12.28e.60.140f_26.04.02.17_M2_SF.
I have read all the threads an know how to do it, I am just not sure what the benefits are and whether they outweigh the risks.
Thanks
Andrew
If your present radio is working fine without any problems I wouldn't recommend flashing the new radio

+1, just bear in mind if your not radio s-off and it all goes pear shaped you may not be able to downgrade
Thanks for your replies.
Well my curiosity got the better of me and I flashed the radio. I used the method described in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=896597
I had a problem at first getting the "adb reboot bootloader" with an error message coming up saying "adb server is out of date. killing...". The answer was to kill adb.exe in task manager. It all worked fine after that.
I will have to wait and see if I notice any difference. I have a full strength signal currently.
My understanding is that the radio firmware manages and controls the wifi, bluetooth, cell radios and other low level hardware functionality.
When someone designs a ROM, it makes sense for them to pick a radio and stick to it unless they have obvious issues, as a different radio version can introduce a wide range of variables into how the phone runs.
So, there may not be anything better or worse with an different radio (although with some there definitely are) but the point is, your experience with the ROM should more closely match that of the designers.
That generally means faster, more efficient, and if you have any bug reports, they'll be taken far more seriously.
I've been running the new radio for a few days now and no problems at all. I honestly can't say I notice any difference in the signal strength, but in collaboration with Coredroid V4 the battery life seems very good.

Recommended Radio on Gingerbread?

I'm on the Gingerbread MIUI, which is based on CM7.
I have a Desire Z, living in the UK.
I'm not bothered about data speed, since I don't have a plan.
There's a ****load of pages on all the radio related threads and I was hoping I would get a nice definitive answer if I opened a topic
Cheers
im using the latest radio, and in my opinion( I might be wrong) it's a bit better, Gps lock pretty fast, and signal relatively the same.
Do not change your radio if you already have decent reception in common areas.
Remember: if it ain't broken, don't try to fix it.

The reason I though about it was that apparently you get better battery life if you use a newer one on CM7 because of the (RILs?) Cyanogen used, which are not replacable. Or am I about to open up a massive debate here"

The best radio is often dependent on your geographic location. Different radios work better in different areas. That's why people have said, if you reception is good (and I'd like to add battery life), don't mess with it.

[Q] Best ROM to use for performance +battery life AND RADIO

Ive used both the Virtuous sense and stock sense ROMS i have heard that sense in general kills battery life and i get horrible battery life so im starting to believe it i have heard Cyanogenmod 7 is great on battery life while offering great phone speeds and performance any recommendations? also i understand having a incorrect radio can give you batter life equiivilent to a brick if i where provide the radio version number and any other info would you be able to point me in the direction of the right radio to flash

so use the one that matches my build number?
My experience is that you don't need to select radios in any particular way, although I think using radios for your location (TMOUS / WWE / AUS) is probably beneficial. Pfak / rmk's ril-automatcher has also helped me.
In most cases it seems to be experiment until you find one that works for you.
My phone lasts a full day, on reasonably high use. I'm on the 12.50.60.24_26.08.04.16 (WWE). In the past I've used 12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26 (TMOUS), which installed when I downgraded to root. It gave me poorer battery life, although I found 12.28e.60.140f_26.04.02.17 (WWE) worked quite well for me.
