[Q] Contacts at the top of "People" application - Why? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm hoping someone will be able to answer this one because it's been bugging me since I got the phone 2 months ago.
When I load the "People" application my contact card is at the top, but then there are 5 people listed and then there is the alphabetical list of everyone else - My question is why are these 5 people there? It's always the same 5 people and always in the same "order" (it's not alphabetical). I've attached a screenshot to demonstrate what I mean.
In "View" "Options" I only have the one address book turned on (Exchange ActiveSync) and although I am now using Virtuous 0.9.0, it's not specific to that as I had this same problem with the stock HTC Sense ROM that came with the device (with these same contacts).
I'm not using any groups EXCEPT for favorites, but only "Carrie" and "Richard" (from the screenshot) are in that favorites group (along with 6 other people not shown here). Some of these people are linked to Facebook and/or Twitter accounts, but some are not, I can't seem to find any pattern with them and they're not all in the frequent "auto-group" either.
Because these are contacts in Exchange I've checked the extra data fields in Outlook and I can see the usual XML code for syncing with Facebook/Twitter, but nothing strange specific to these people. I can't find any reference of this in the user manual nor can I find any other threads on this subject either so really hoping someone can help!
Thank you!

Facebook contacts with numbers showing

Hey all,
Just received my Desire and loving it. My only issue so far is that even though I've selected in the People app only to display Google contacts there seems to still be Facebook contacts appearing, albeit only the ones who have entered phone numbers into their Facebook profile.
This causes duplicate entries for the same person in messaging apps (default and Handcent) and in the People app it seems to prefer to show the Facebook contact details rather than the Google ones.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Russ
I have exactly the same problem
are those the contacts that are LINKED to facebook contacts, but not actually facebook contacts?
oh, and you will get du0plicates appearing in third party apps. all that unticking them in people does is hide them in that app. the rest can still see them.
Yes, the linking has happened automatically, unfortunately it doesn't stop the contact showing up twice. For example, I have a friend Hailei, she has an entry in my google contacts with her phone number, this contact is linked to her facebook profile on which she has a fake contact number.
If I create an SMS and type in Hailei as the recipient I get presented with both the real number and her fake facebook number and there's no way to stop this happening. This happens with the standard Messaging app or with Handcent.
in the sms you will get that, yes.
like i said, just because you have hidden the facebook contacts in people, it does NOT hide them in any other application, as they are still downloaded to the phone.
the only way to get rid of the duplicates is to sing out of facebook for HTC sense. not ideal, but hopefuuly it'll get fixed later as it's not an ideal way for it to work.
this is far from ideal esp if numbers match sat tmobiles ie every time they send me a text it date it'd from a contact and my fiancee is then why they sending you texts and I have to show her to prove it. we need to pressure HTC on this to get a fix or at least the ability to delete them from the phones address book. also a side question if anyone knows a way to link the phone button to the people app so o get that come up instead it would be great ie remaping it or something

Anybody know anyone with a Nexus One to confirm if this is an Android 2.1 issue or a HTC Sense on 2.1 issue?
It would be nice if you could import the facebook contacts one at a time into your phonebook, not just as a whole.
I was lucky and found out the whole facebook thing as soon as I started my phone, managed to delete my whole contacts, uncheck the facebook contact sync and start again. No more pointless numbers from people I would never want to phone anymore, but means I can't get pictures up for my contacts.
Handcent SMS now has an option to hide social network contacts, although I don't actually have access to that option, it's in the release notes for the latest version which I have but the option in Settings doesn't appear, I'm not alone on this so must be a bug, hopefully quickly fixed and that puts an end to my problems!

Syncing Facebook contacts into phonebook is actually a Sense function, i.e. part of the HTC's "People" program.
Yeah, agreed: this is an annoying issue... Just because I want to get Facebook photos for my contacts and their status update does not mean I want ALL their details of EVERY Facebook friend being stored on my phone as a contact.
Even more problematic is how Sense handles phone numbers... It will pull phone numbers from Facebook and (seemingly randomly) may overwrite your setting for their phone number.
Example:
For contact "Bob", you set his phone number as +447900000, however, Bob has his Facebook phone number set as 447900000 (notice how the + is missing, because Bob doesn't know that you need the + there and anyway, who cares, it's only Facebook!)
Well, when Sense syncs the phone numbers, it may very well overwrite Bob's correct phone number (with the + prefix) with his Facebook phone number (which you will be unable to successfully dial)... and there is no way to turn this off without disabling the whole Facebook syncing functionality...
Very annoying!
Yup couldn't agree more. I did a reset like 5 mins after starting the phone, just because I didn't want to see the facebook armada on the list. While yes I did aggree to friend requests from my students ... I don't want to have all 200 of them as contacts in the phone prog ...

OK so this is what I did, but I have no idea whether it will work for you. I had a specific contact who I simply couldn't dial so I tried to find a solution.
NOTE: This does NOT solve the problem for all contacts, but read on and it may help...
First thing I did was go into my Google Contacts on my computer and deleted all the Facebook metadata in the "notes" section for each contact (as this was already pulled over from my HTC Hero tagging, and it seemed to have a different format.) << so if you are migrating from an older HTC Sense handset, then this may help you but WARNING: this will take a long time to do for each contact, and you will then need to re-associate every contact.
Next thing was to delete all the contact info off my device which you can do by going to Manage Applications > Contacts Storage and delete all the stored info.
Now go to sync settings and hit "Sync All" (or whatever it's called), or just wait and your phone will automatically re-download all of your contacts.
Now... some contacts will automatically get linked to their respective Facebook accounts and some will need to be set manually (I have no idea why they can't ALL be linked automatically, it seems kind of random...)
Anyway, what I have now found is that:
- Any contacts who were linked automatically: my settings override the Facebook settings
- Any contacts who were linked manually: Facebook settings override my settings
Either way, this is incredibly annoying and I think that HTC really do need to provide 2 extra options:
1. To not download ALL Facebook contacts, only to fetch additional attributes for existing contacts
and:
2. To give us greater control over what these attributes are (i.e. I do NOT want all of my contacts random/invalid phone numbers being imported to my device and cluttering everything up, just because I want their image & wall updates...)
I think you have to LINK the person.
I had the same, but when I LINKED the two 'names', it became one. I could choose which name I wanted to use, the Facebook name or the Google entry name.
You told in a previous post that the LINK was automatically done. This is not true. It only suggests, but you have to confirm by clicking the broken chain behind the name. Then it becomes a chain and the two entries becomes one.
I hoped this helps ya all.
I realised mine wasn't automatic, it was just already linked from when I had my Hero, I forgot it stores the link on your google contacts
Workaround:
Not ideal but fixes problematic phonnumber
When you have linked your gmail contact with fb account
Edit your gmail account and add any number as that persons phone.
Now you should see 2 numbers from that person.
Chosse that fake number as primary number.
Now edit gmail contact again and edit fake number with real one.
It will override fb number if it is in wrong format
Not ideal but at least you have proper number for that person
Using Sense 2.0 here.
Apart from the sms number suggestion thing (i can live with it, but is annoying...)
The real problem is that every facebook contact that has a phone number is synced without the + in the area code. This makes all contacts undialable!!! I checked that on facebook via browser the numbers are correct (they are without area code)!
We really need a solution for this problem, a solution that isn't disable facebook people sync (i want to keep photos etc.)

Sync ONE GROUP of contacts only with android (HTC Desire)

Hi,
I recently purchased a HTC Desire Android phone and I'm looking for a way to keep a simple, basic contact list updated and synched with my Gmail account.
The problem with the default way on my phone is that it will sync every contact on my Gmail. This is a problem as I only want to have contacts from my phone book synched to one gmail group and vice versa. There is an option to "disply only contacts with numbers" but I still don't like the idea of having every contact on the phone. There is also the problem of the extra empty groups I won't be using, can these be gotten rid of?
I basically just want one list and it to be my default list with all contacts and not have to go through an array of menus to get to that one list on the phone. I don't want that list to be populated by contacts who I may have only emailed once and will never email again. I don't want any gimmicks in between, no gtalk contacts, no facebook contacts, no default gmail contacts and I want to be able to then export this group to a CSV file to use with spreadsheets etc.
This seems to be possible on Android stock and even on HTC Hero Sense UI according to here: androidheadlines.com/2010/04/tidy-up-your-contact-list-with-a-custom-sync-group.html
but in the Desire Sense UI, when you go to people/groups/menu, it only gives the option to delete or add.
Seems this guy is having the same issue, he has the sync group option but his friend doesn't, both using the same phone
androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/47533-no-sync-groups-option.html
There are reports from this thread that some users have had this same problem. Some have a "Sync Groups" option when they go to People>Group Tab and click menu, most don't have this option however and I'm yet to hear from a desire user with this option. Also from this thread (google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=0ff2b08f98943ccb&hl=en) one user reported that a "hard reset" gave him the "Sync Group" option. I tried this but had no luck, still the same menu as before.
I've been trying to sort this for days and have asked on multiple forums. Hopefully somebody here can help and I'd appreciate any feedback at all!
If anyone has any idea please share, I've posted this on 5 different websites to try and get it resolved but still no luck. Would it even be possible to use the android "contacts" app as opposed to the HTC DESIRE "people" app at all? I still have my sim card in my old phone until I sort this out and need the phone for work so would really appreciate any help!
If you use exchange to sync your google contacts it will just sync my contacts and not all contacts
Thanks for the reply. I haven't tried exchange yet. Is that a separate system to Google or what is it? How does it have access to Google?
I actually want another group I've made, not "My Contacts" synched witht he phone. Would this still be possible with exchange?
No need for all that.
Go to HTCs program "PEOPLE". Press the hard menu button. Press the soft VIEW menu. Click "only contacts with phone numbers".
Your welcome !
Thanks PauloJ5, I know of that option already but it's still not suitable for my needs. I need the "Sync Group" option that's available on other android and HTC sense systems unfortunately and it just doesn't appear to come on the Desire system
Just a quick, hopeful bump
So according to this thread: http://android.modaco.com/content-page/305926/htc-desire-root-update/page/120/#entry1253966 it seems the MoDaCo founder has rooted the Desire. I wonder will this help at all in being able to resolve this issue?
In the sync options in Android, there is an option for exchange sync. Google servers support exchange sync, so you can add your google account. In the options, put in your google email as username, along with your password. Put m.google.com as server.
I would then disable google contact synchronization, and enable exchange contact sync. You might want to delete all the google contacts on your phone that have been previously stored to get rid of them (use the view option in the people manager to select just these). Not sure what this will do to your google contacts on the servers so I would back them up first (use export in google contacts on the web). Then do an exchange sync.
This will just sync your "my contacts" and not "all contacts". It won't let you sync specific groups.
Thanks again sawfoot, but if it can only sync mycontacts and not other specific groups I choose then it's not a solution for me unfortunately
It's just funny that the solution I need has been on other versions of Sense UI and also on the Android Stock but they seemed to have taken the most important function for me away from the phone I decided to go with
Just thought I'd give this another quick bump since the Root method and instructions for the desire have now been released. Perhaps a solution can be had
Just thought I'd give this another hopeful bump in the off chance of somebody who may have solved the issue on the desire (now that it's been rooted) seeing it I'm still waiting on HTC to get back to me too!
So with the extensive help of partyatmygaff over msn, I was able to root my desire and I finally got the contacts app working on it! I saved the chat transcript as it may be helpful for anyone else wanting to install from Windows XP. This is an ultra dumbed down version. I made sure to ask as many questions as possible, even if I was 99% sure of the answer myself
Some of the files were sent to me over msn like the market enabler etc, but these should be easily found online anyway. Also, the program I use for the commant prompt is called "command prompt here" I think, but you can just type in the address of the folder in DOS if you know how anyway!
You can see the transcript here: http://www.vantasks.ie/xpdesireroot.html
There is a good bit of filler, but it really covers absolutely everything you need to know so once you get to the bottom of the page, your desire should be rooted and ready to go
So I got the contacts sync thing working anyway, I can now sync with my chosen group from Gmail, but I can't believe it, if I have this group selected and I save a new contact, it wont save to that group, but just the "all contacts" group even though that's not selected
Always something! The guy in post 10 here: http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f9/add-or-edit-contact-groups-12668/ seems to have got it going, but as you can see in my reply, post 11, it's not saving to the desired group for me!

Wil this be a problem that I forsee?

Hey guys, we all know windows phone 7's people hub integrates facebook with your contacts. However I can't quite see how it would be done.
Correct me if I'm wrong here. One problem I forsee is this - contact duplicates. Most of my facebook contacts do not even put up their mobile phones on their facebook profile. Now I have a separate list of contacts with just their names and mobile numbers(the traditional way of storing contacts). Could anyone explain to me how windows phone 7 will be able to integrate facebook contacts with such a list of contacts? Every phone allow us to name a contact with an attached number/s, versus facebook contacts whose names are named by them. It would be convenient if we could search for through our contacts by the names on our own list of contacts we've created, rather than fake names given by our facebook contacts. As such wouldn't we face a problem of contact duplicates? And even if windows phone 7 gave us an option to integrate the two separate contact's information into one, wouldn't we have to do that for almost every single contact?
Could someone clarify on this issue?
WP7 will let you link contact information from multiple sources to one contact card.

[Q] Exchange Contacts & Google Contacts showing duplicates in SMS 3.0 (Sense 3.0)

Previously posted in Synergy thread with no resolution/suggestions.
Background
I have contacts synched from my Exchange account (I need to access work email, etc.)
I also have contacts synched from my main google account. In google, under Contacts, the "My Contacts" subdivision are identical to the Exchange contacts. There are no duplicates on either list of contacts.
On my phone, under "search people" I see all contacts, including random people from gmail's of past. This is normal. Under the People App, I see a list of my exchange contacts (which also happens to be the same list as my "My Contacts" sub-list from Google Contacts). There are no duplicates seen here either.
Question
However, when I begin to type a text and start to enter the name of the person to send a text to, the auto complete showing matching names shows DUPLICATES of every entry. So for example, I type Tom, I would get two Tom Mobile numbers and Two Tom Home numbers where it should be only one for each (1 Tom home, 1 Tom Mobile). Is this normal behavior for Sense/SMS 3.0? I did not have this issue with my prior stock ROM. If not, how would you suggest resolving it?

Right, that is expected behavior. When I start to type a name in the text input I get two of each and every number showing up in the drop down. But as I said, no duplicates when I browse through "people" app.

I only get duplicates in this sense as well. I think it even says recent in front of them or by it. I also get a duplicated text "wording"if trying to attach a pic within a text. It seems sending from gallery works the best for mms.

There is a "history" listing which is also normal behavior. So for example, If I'd previously typed TOM, when I got to enter T-O, you will see TOM (history next to hit) and again the TOM result. Only I also see an exact duplicate for that TOM again just below it which really shouldn't be there (should it?). I do not believe it was like this in Stock. My only guess is the identical contacts from Exchange and Google (My Contacts) have both been synched over and SMS 3.0 doesn't filter the duplicate entries from showing like the "People" app correctly does. This is why there are no duplicates under "people" app but they do appear in text name entry drop down.
Based on other threads: http://androidforums.com/htc-desire/113907-duplicate-contacts-when-texting-calling.html & http://androidforums.com/droid-x-support-troubleshooting/400279-duplicate-contacts-all-sms-apps.html it looks like others have noticed this issue too. It's not ROM specific but seems to be a GB and/or Sense 3.0/SMS issue? Apparently this IS the standard behavior of a GB rom I guess? I do not recall having this issue with stock Froyo rom. Unless someone else with both identical exchange and google contacts has figured out how to avoid it.

Weird ghost contact issue

I'm going to do my very best to explain this issue, but it's not easy to make sense because the whole issue is so weird!! In every case if I refer to an app it's the stock app as provided with UK SIM free un-rooted phone. I've owned it a few days and everything I've ever added is still on there.
In my contacts app I can show all contacts from all accounts including show contacts without phone numbers, without email addresses, it really is showing me every contact that exists - these people are definitely not my contacts.
When I go into the photos app, one of the options is to use the photo as a contacts icon. It's at this point that it brings up 3 extra people! I do not have these people in my contacts on Outlook, they aren't in my circles on G+, I don't follow them on Twitter nor do they follow me and I'm not Facebook friends with them on the account that is registered to the phone. I have a second Facebook account for which my logon is my gmail account, on which I am friends with 16 people, one of whom is among the random contacts, but the other 2 of them I'm not friends with them on that Facebook either! And the other 15 friends from my Gmail Facebook account do not show up. The only other possibility which springs to mind is that I was friends with these 3 people on Facebook about 8 years and at least 3 phones ago, maybe some kind of HTC account or similar backup service is holding ghost contact details for them - but where? Previous phones were all HTC right back to when they made phones under other brands (One M8, One M7, Sensation, Wildfire, TyTNIII, TyTNI)
So the question is, how do I get rid of these people? They aren't visible anywhere else for me to delete them, all I can do is use a photo as a contact icon for them. Why is this a problem? Because I know their details will import into my car phonebook when I link that up and I'll have to scroll past them to get to people I'm actually friends with. The car list is not editable, I import everybody or nobody. And also because looking at their names when I want to edit real people annoys me out of all proportion.
Any idea where the random people are located so I can take them away? Thanks.
