Rooting newbie. - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I just rooted my g2 with visionary. How tried the 1ghz overclock gscript thingy and just madr my phone slower than before with quadcom benchmark scores the lower than stock unrooted. Then I came across someone saying using that method is like a rough hack and something abouy voltage, and suggested to use pershooter's kernal as it correctly changes the batterys voltage saving more battery and overclocking even higher. What is kernal? And can I use with stock froyo ?

For ease of understanding, the kernel is the underlinging OS (think MS-DOS for Windows, Windows runs on top of DOS). And yes, you're correct. Pershoots kernel does under-volt and isn't available for stock Froyo but do a search for Baconbits and use that.
If you haven't toyed around with flashing things, I suggest using ROM Manager (by ClockworkMod) which is available in the Market; additionally, try SetCPU instead of the gscript; it might be easier for you to manage.

Read the Wiki and read the forums if you don't want to be clueless.
If you like the stock ROM, then stay with it; if you want more control, then flash a new ROM. If you want to overclock in stock, flash Baconbits v3; if you want to overclock (with undervolt), you'll need to flash CM and pershoots kernel.
Like I said, read the Wiki and the forums; for ease of use, download ROM Manager (can flash CM, pershoot and Baconbits there easily), and download SetCPU (probably easier for you than a gscript).
Really though, unless you're wanting to take chances and learn as you go, just stay stock; but since you've already opted to root, take a gander at the threads and Wiki and see if anything interests you; if not, there was no need for you to root.

If you want to try out Sense, head over to the Virtuous thread. I highly recommend that. If you want stock then try cm6. Considering cm7 is in early development, you might want to stray away. And there are tons of themes you can flash on top to make it your own.

I wonder if anybody has been lucky to have a working custom kernel with the new leak.

I have tried every custom kernel and no luck . My device keeps looping.

I think I know what I'm doing full root, s-off, bake snack 1.7. With kernel #6.
I just posted a simple question, if it work for you, then good for you.
It sure has not work for me.
It only boots fine with the stock HTC kernel that comes with it. New kernel build.

I agree. Are you doing a delvik wipe before you flash the kernel? What kernel you tried? Some kernels are only for 2.1, 2.2, sense only or sell only. Do you have setcpu? Do you have it overclocked and have save on boot checked? Need more info..

Lol.. new leak to me was the new 2.2 froyo Rom that is rooted and leaked. People are not.mind readers. And the 2.2 I'm talking about is the update that hasn't come out yet. So before you get mad about a reply.. you should note if you post something vague expect those replies.
Edit: the new fresh Rom. Look at it. Some consider that as a leak since the update isn't even out yet and he has it and made a Rom.

I used king #8 without problems. Some kernels did the boot loop also for me. But notice on one after it did that a few times it full worked after. Sometime if that happens pull battery. Do recovery and do delvik again. Reboot. Sometimes it takes a fee reboot and don't know why.. let me know. I'll keep checking this for you and help.. I'm going to be up for awhile..

King #8 works fine for me. Just takes awhile to load up. Bootscreen takes awhile and vibrates and seems to run longer than normal. Then it loaded it without loops. Just be patient. Hope this helps.

[Q] Best slide [ROM].

Hey everyone. My wife decided her mytouch slide is a little too laggy for her. I have rooted and flashed HTC phones and my vibrant with great success. I am going to do her phone this weekend but I need some help please. I do NOT follow this forum at all so I have no idea what [ROM]s are stable and functioning for everyone else. If I could please get some input from you guys that have been here and have tested these out it would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance
Start with the Slide bible: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=704567
Personally, I think this is the easiest root method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754020
If you want Froyo, Cyanogen is very good if you don't need bluetooth: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755118
If bluetooth is important for you, CR_Mod is said to be an excellent 2.1 ROM. I haven't tried it personally, Froyo is too yummy for me to go back. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7534187#post7534187
Good luck!
The dopio oc kernels are also very stable esp at 768 and 806. Just use set cpu app to maximize battery life.
The cm nightlies are also usually very stable.
The slide reloaded rom is also a sweet themed version of cr's full ota rom.

Yeah, for my uses, Cyan with the dopio kernel is the way to go 100%. But you never know, once you get the ENG flashed, let your wife play with all the ROMs she can handle until she finds one she likes. ROM Manager makes it ridiculously easy.
What about the galaxy slide rom by infinitybiff? Anyone tried that? I don't use touch wiz on my vibrant but the wife might like it. Still leaning towards cyan. Just need something fast and stable for her. I'm gonna have to theme it for her myself cause there is no one doing that.

cyanogenmod or crmod
I just flashed Galaxy Slide Beta the other day after using CR for the longest time. its the first ROM that i have flashed (and there have been many) that i didn't immediately flash straight back to CR. i am having a minor trouble with the color scheme in the notification pull down and i haven't tried all the features yet... (i.e. bluetooth, tethering, and maybe one or two more) but all in all i love it!

The dopio kernel is integrated into cyanogenmod 6.1+, no need to flash it over again, but other roms you will have to flash it.

Cyanogenmod is froyo, and based off of the AOSP source, so it has a more vanilla flavor to it. CR_Mod is just the rooted stock OTA ROM with a wifi tether, and a2ext built in. CR_Mod is also eclair, it just all depends on what you like better, the latest vanilla customizable stuff, or the more stock HTC sense feel, with all of the t-mobile stuff.

This is the kernel I was using prior to 2.2 flash. Worked great! Very fast and stable.
You can also try SyndicateRom with the Xtreme kernel. I enjoyed that before the froyo leaks started.
Yeah those days feel so long ago,I wish we had source for 2.2.1 alreay... Anyway I found Phoenix kernel to be the best, alot less bugs. That with any DI18 ROM was awesome.

Regardless about how anyone around here feels about this gentleman, I would say for a 2.1 Rom your best bet would probably be Baked Snack (1.6). I won't post a link but all you have to do is google Baked Snack Epic4g and youll find it.
I went back and fourth to Froyo leaks a few different times as new ones were released, and I still always end up reverting back to this Rom, it just seems to be the snappiest 2.1 (or 2.2 for that matter) Rom available, It has a well working apps2sd, kernel options for best battery life, (IMHO) and you can overclock to either 1.2 or 1.3 ghz on it. Just my 2 cents. For me the only quasi-important feature I'm missing out on by not running Froyo is Flash, but TBH thats not that important to me. I'm never too far from a computer if I need it that bad.
is 2.1 with overclock kernel that much faster than 2.2.1 without overclock. I like my rooted 2.2.1. not really wanting to go backwards.
a slower chip running a newer OS or a faster chip running and older OS....ya 2.1 OC'ed will be fast.
I hate how everyone listed a different ROM, it's just so daunting now! It makes me afraid to switch from stock!
check this out, list of roms kernels etc/

Downgrade 2.3.4, 2.0 Ghz OC, DZ Hboot

Quick Question, just bought my Friends G2. He never once rooted. Everything stock. Will the downgrade method used for 2.3.3 work for 2.3.4? I belive so, but I'm not sure. Also what Kernel allows a stable 2.0 Ghz? And my final question. Is the DZ Hboot worth doing? I'm a CM guy, but I may wanna use sense 3.5

For rooting, check the wiki for the guide to do so; for kernels, check the sticky in the dev forum (though pushing an 800Mhz CPU to 2Ghz is never going to be fully stable); as for the DZ Hboot, I've never worked with it so you'd have to do some research on pros/cons.

You can downgrade -- there is a nice guide I think I was just reading by sethario
Tiamet kernal (pretty sure I saw someone clocking that high with that)
For sense 3.5 I believe people are using unity kernal v9
And clocking high to avoid lag

Hafta reflash a better radio if you do dzboot. It puts the old radio. You can do it without abd. But it involves battery pulls and 2 sd cards

Clocking a phone at 2 GHz is imo kinda dumb. Its not going to be stable and its not a computer.
I switched to dzhboot and haven't changed my radio since I got my phone...still works the same as it always has

safe to OC on rooted stock rom?

I was looking to OC but I am hesitant since I am running a stock rom even though I am rooted. I have SetCPU and CPUTuner but I just don't know what would be a good speed to set it to. I don't want to run too hot but I would like to be a bit faster. I read other forums about OC with custom roms and they said no higher then 2106mhz or something like that. I just want to know if that would be a safe speed for stock rom.

Where did you get a custom kernel for the stock ROM that allows overclocking? As far as I know you have to flash a CM10.2 or CM11 ROM in order to be able to run a custom kernel with overclocking capabilities.
Check the General Section for the kernel.

I don't think you can overclock the stock kernel simply by rooting. The kernel has to have the capabilities to do so. If you want, there is a great kernel that I am using. In the general section, you'll have to flash either a 4.3x or 4.4x ROM to use it.
