Hi, srry my poor english but i need to find some app or way, how to know, whitch aplications use actually mobile data. Thx. And is thete ayn thread about battery in DesireZ?
dunno about any apps to monitor data but I know you can disable it completely by going to settings > wireless & networks > mobile networks, then uncheck data enabled.
What did you need to know about the battery?

I use an application called traffic counter pro. It allows you to see your total data usage over wifi an mobile networks. As well as being able to see what each application is using

Just wondering if CM7 comes with a data counter to keep an eye on mobile data (3G etc) usage.
I've had a good look through all the CM7 settings but can't find one
I have my connection pretty well controlled via Droidwall so only have gmail, contacts & calendar allowed to have access to 3G data so I'm not going to use much data but a counter may be of use if there's a good one available.
Can anyone suggest a good data counter from the market.
Thanks
3g watchdog, never had any issues with it, the pro version can even count data in blocks if you're data plan is based on it, so i highly recommend this app.
Have you checked the market?

Yes I've had a quick look but there's quite a few to choose from so was after some recommendations from XDA members for CM7 really.
I have t-moble, downloaded app directly from market to oversee my data usage.

Just tried 3G Watchdog & it seems to be quite a decent app - shows details in the notification bar so easy to view.
Will probably stick with this when I start getting charged for mobile data
I use the "NetCounter",it's the most light-weight app for data counter.

how do you access droidwall and set it to only allow certain apps to access 3g data?

Download Droidwall from the market.
Load it & grant it Root access.
In the Droidwall menu enable firewall & enable log.
Droidwall will show a list of all apps/programmes that request wifi/3G access with a "checkmark" box next to each.
You can then check which apps you want to access wifi or 3G or both.
Go into the Droidwall menu & click "apply rules".
At the top of the screen there's an option to have it in whitelist mode (only allows access to whichever you have put the checkmark against) or blacklist mode (won't allow access to those apps that you have put a checkmark against).
I use it in whitelist mode.
Important to say if you download a new app after installing Droidwall then you have to go back in & allow it access.
There's also a log button in the menu so you can see which apps are getting blocked.
Thanks for tips. Works like a charm, but gotta slowly add the apps into the list

Some apps may also need other programmes adding to the list for example youtube may also need media server adding for it to work. In that case I use the log feature of Droidwall to show what it blocked.

go to Settings>>Accounts and Sync and make sure Background Data is enabled (ticked)
I found this also if your on G or E connection even if data is enabled, it seems to be more data intensive than the old market

I got my HOX last week upgrading from sgs2, & ever since i swapped the sims i haven't been able to download apps on 3G or test my data speed with 'speed.test' app, all other surfing works.
anyone else had this problem?
Maybe you used all your 3G traffic for this month? About play store, did you check if "Download only when WiFi is available" is ticked? Although not sure if this might affect speed.test as well..

Just found the fix in another forum on XDA.

I finally managed to solve the problem. Just follow these steps, but bear in mind that i'm using a custom ROM so it might be a little different with you. Go to Settings > Wireless and network > Mobile networks > Access Point Names (or APN). Now select the APN that u are using. (I chose MTN Data since i'm MTN. Now go to "Proxy". There should be a number in there, delete everything that's in there and leave that field blank. Go to "Port" and clear everything as well. It worked for me.hope it works for u too. Let me know.

Hey, I'm looking for a way to completely disable mobile data, as in it would NEVER turn on.
Currently I have it disabled, sync disabled etc. but at random times (sometimes at shutdown or startup, sometimes when disabling wifi), it shows the H icon with up-down arrows and I get charged €1 for the session.
It's both annoying and costly, so I need a solution ASAP!
Things I've tried:
Making a fake APN (name: xyz, address: xyz) - still connects to the real one...
Removing real APN - it keeps coming back.
HELP!
Thanks!
The only way i know of that could be useful to you:
Settings > Data Usage (Under Wireless and Networks) > Mobile Data Uncheck it. While you are in there you can also press the menu button and tick restrict background data.
Hope this helps.

That is really helpful, thanks!
Noe is there any way to disable the "background data restricted" yellow triangle and message?
No, not without modifying the android os itself. However unticking the mobile data setting should do the trick without using the restriction .

Did a few searches but couldn't find much mention of it. Are you guys using it and finding it actually helps?
I immediately removed it as soon as it asked for permission to enable a vpn. I use OpenVPN full time on my home router for all devices behind it, and I have OpenVPN configured to automatically enable/disable on the phone using Tasker and OpenVPN Tasker Plugin, I know what apps use background data and what does not, so no need for me. I have three apps that watch data as secondary functions, and therefore tell me what apps are using it the most. I'm more aware and informed I guess than the average user., so it is a step back in control for me.

Other than you already having a VPN, is there an issue with datally enabling a VPN?

Datally only uses a VPN locally in order to monitor data usage according to what I've read.
VPN
When Data Saver is turned on, Datally creates a secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) on your phone to help you understand and control your mobile data usage. The VPN allows Datally to stop apps from using mobile data when you don’t want them to. When you turn Data Saver off, the VPN also turns off.
Note: The Datally VPN is only on your phone. It doesn’t redirect your Internet traffic to any other servers or locations. Google doesn't receive the data in your VPN.

Okay, so it doesn't provide any of the privacy advantages of a standard VPN service?

No, it's just meant for data/battery savings.

I do know that Google WiFi Assistant VPN conflicts with my OpenVPN when both try to connect at once. I've disabled the wifi Assistant VPN as unnecessary. As to Datally, I don't know, since I never fully enabled it before uninstall.

If you use just the data saver that is built in to the system, it will save battery.
But wouldn't having a VPN on all the time negate the battery you save of using less data? Vs just using data saver to block apps you don't want to use data except when they are in the foreground or if they have otherwise been granted unrestricted data use when data saver is on.
You can use another app to monitor how much data each app is consuming. The apps already monitor it so the other app would actually just be reading something that is already recorded, so it should not use much more battery.
I've only had the phone a few days but installed Datally right away and my battery life has been unbelievable. Going to turn it off today and see how it goes.
I did install Doze 4 GPS too.
