Rom and kernel suggestions - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am looking for a rom and kernel that will be close to stock or sense and allow me to overclock, but not make me lose 4G or HDMI. If you have suggestions please let me know.
FYI, I rooted with unrevoked and I tried the recent OTA update but it keeps failing to install. I wanted the new version of Swype and the Blockbuster app. Any ideas there too?

Sprint Lover's is quite stock. For overclocking, use one of Netarchy's 4.3.1 kernels (some or all of the 4.3.2 betas have problems turning 4G off for me).

I use joykrim newest update with what you want just no overclock.

Are you looking for something similar to stock to avoid going through a learning curve? If so, Myn's RLS5 isn't too bad. It's a great ROM and doesn't put you through a big learning curve.
As for kernels, do you have a 0004 Evo? To check, go to Menu -> Settings -> About phone -> Hardware information. I use one of Netarchy's 4.3 CFS kernels with more HAVS and SBC.
I'm pretty pleased with what my phone is currently running. It's info is in my sig. If you decide to try it out and need some help feel free to shoot me a PM.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, don't use a HAVS kernel if you're looking to overclock.

Thanks
I appreciate the input. I flashed Sprint Lovers and Netarchy 4.3.1 kernel. All seems well so far. The reason I want to stay stock is because I keep hearing horror stories about radio, Wi-Max, Bluetooth, and other issues with some roms.

I have a 0002 EVO. Is there a difference in what you should install.

First off, you should never run an OTA update unless you plan on rerunning the root process again. Most current ROMs you flash will already have all the OTA fixes in it.
HW versions of the phone only affect the rooting process. If you're using unrevoked to root they you don't really need to worry about your HW version. Flashing ROMs and Kernels is the same process for all HW versions.
I have tried a handfull of ROMs and Kernels out there. The only one that has a drastically different feel in MIUI. All others are pretty much alike and shouldn't be that hard to figure out. In order to have 4G and HDMI working you will need to run a Sense based ROM. I am running the EVO Nonsense 4.3.1 ROM with a Netarchy 4.3.2 Kernel and this has been a very solid/stable combo for me.

HW Version 003 here
Had my phone unplugged all day (well, 17 hours worth and still had about 75% battery left).
This is what I'm running right now.
Rom:
RUU Supersonic 3.70.651.1 deoxed (completely stock + rooted)

PRI:

NV:
EVO_NV_1.77_003 (was having that "android system Up vs. Awake time" problem so i downgraded the NV in hopes that it would help, and it did astoundingly)
PRL:60675 (which may or may not have to do with the amazing battery life ive been getting recently, I don't know to be honest)
Hope this helps. Ive somehow managed to get a better battery life on this than I had with Myn's or Fresh's, so I figured I'd spread on my little secret.
P.S. The RUU rom has swype and blockbuster in it too, otherwise good hunting.

I was considering cm7. Is it true that 4g has been fixed? Does anyone know if hdmi works on cm7?

Currently using setup in my sig. Mikfroyo and myns are the 2 big sense roms.
I found overclocking to have little benefit in performance and using setcpu w/overclocking seemed to give me stock like battery life.
For me battery life is greater than overclocking. Going all day with steady usage and still having 50% or more battery life is soo nice

The 4G has been fixed. Working in nightly 6+. Also, it may be working, but you can test it for yourself.

How can I make my phone faster without losing features?

I just started flashing but it seems with all these roms something is wrong. I really just like the roms for the speed. But everyone has cons like no front camera on Miui or no mms just random things. Does Cm6 have anything like cons?

Well as far a CM no 4g or hdmi. But I've used Cm, MIUI, Fresh, Myns, ect... found out I really like having sense based...for now. With sense based you can easily update pri's and prl's and access all the phone ## codes unlike an aosp rom . And you can still use 4g and hdmi and such, pretty much everything that comes included with stock but enhanced. If you havent tried Myn's, give it a shot, I think its pretty zippy also your kernel can play alot in the speed of your phone. Hope something in that mess of words helps.
Edit: also thought i'd add, I use Myn's Sense Based rom but use Launcher Pro Plus instead of stock rosie launcher. I find it much more customizable and better looking, imo.
Thanks a lot. Sorry im really new to all this but what's a kernal? Like in normal words what's it do? And do they take away hdmi 4g camera or anything?

As of now all sense roms (myns, fresh, mikfroyo, etc.) Have everything working. The camer,camcorder,4g,hdmi....everything works. They just remove bloatware and speed up there system. And most come with bonuses like usb tethering. Stick to those and youll have everything you want. And yes the kernels are what make everything work. Once aosp kernels support 4g,camera etc. then they can make it work in there aosp rom (cyan, miui). The best way to describe kernels is....the kernel is the motor in your car. Some are v8s that are fast but use more fuel(battery). Some are v6s right. Some kernels (motors) wont run well in your car(phone) some will work awesome...
Evo - Myn 2.2 RLS 3 - Clockwork - HBoot .76
Also, every phone is different. Not every Rom will act exactly the same, nor every kernel...you kinda hafta flash for yourself and see which works best. For me, mikfroyo is the fastest sense-based Rom I have used, for you Myn's or vaelpak or something else may work best, you'll just hafta flash and see.

Also depending on where you live and what you use your phone for plays a factor. I like MIUI or Cyanogen because of the awesome features AND I don't really have a need for 4g or HDMI.
I've recently used Myn's 2.2 and Fresh 3.5 for long periods of time. Both are EXTREMELY reliable and stable, and I think they would work fine with any phone. Like r.storm85 mentions, it comes down to a good kernel that will work well on your phone. All phones are different. For example, my phone somehow keeps rebooting with a "Fresh rom/KingKlick #10 and up kernel" combo.
So find something that works for you. Also remember, it takes a few days for your phone, rom, and kernel to start working together, so don't give up on something only after a few hours.

Think of the kernel as the heart of the operating system. It's the base of the OS that everything else is built off of. Modified kernels offer many different options. Some allow you to underclock to conserve battery life, others allow you to overclock to squeeze even more power out of that snapdragon processor, and some others allow you to change and modify options that were unalterable or hidden in the stock kernel (like cyanogen allowing you to force your phone to roam only).
Just as with anything there are pro's and cons to all the different mods. Just do a lot of reading (sounds like you already have a good start) and testing with the different kernels and roms out there. Some combos work great together, some just don't play well with one another at all. Eventually you will find one that suits you, and tinkering is what makes the android platform so amazing. Have fun, flash safe, and always always make good nandroid backups.

[Q] HTC Incredible root decision

So here's my situation.
Saw that Google killed some apps today. Looked on my phone and sure enough I had two games (Chess and Falling Ball). Knowing that a factory reset from the phone settings wouldn't actually erase any rooting that these apps could have done, I decided to install the official HTC RUU. Tried to run it and got an error about the bootloader being incompatible. Tried a few things, but nothing made a difference.
Now I'm at a crossroads. I need to clear off this crap. I figured, ok, let's go ahead and root the phone and maybe even a custom ROM that way I'm sure any remnants of the app are gone. Problem is I haven't found an easy way to tell which ROMs are good, which ones aren't (by that I mean are stable and let me use wifi/bluetooth/gps without issues), and that allow me to use Exchange/activesync still.
I looked at Cyanogenmod, but they are telling my that wifi/bluetooth/gps don't work. I don't care if it has sense or not, but again, I need those things to work as well as exchange.
If all else fails I'll go back to the stock firmware, but I need to be sure that I've cleared off any changes these apps may have caused. Thanks.
Flash virtuous rom, its nearly 100% stock, but rooted, very stable.
Ya gotta root first tho.

Skyraider Sense is a very stable rom too. Just throwing some options out there for you.

Incredibly Reengineered is awesome. apparently theres an issue with MMS with wifi on or something but I haven't experienced it yet.. Other than that my bluetooth wifi and gps all work flawlessly and super fast. Virtuous is good if you want your phone pretty much stock. Depends on preference.
Most ROMS have a buglist somewhere in the original post that says what the issues are. Cyanogenmod 6.1 is very stable, but it's AOSP not sense.
Many AOSP ROM's lack solid stability, so if I were you I'd try sticking with Sense based ROM's at first- and if you want to venture out a little further then there are some pretty sweet AOSP ROM's that are for the most part quite stable.
I've been sticking with Sky Raider 3.5 for a while now, I've tried a few other ROM's but always came back to good 'ol SR3.5. It's speedy, great battery life, and a couple added features that are very nice to have.
As always, be absolutely sure you make a complete backup of your phone before ever starting to flash anything. Also make sure you read through your ROM thread thoroughly so you won't run into any problems.
As most have said SkyRaider 3.5 is a great first Rom to start with. It was my first. I've since moved to Warm 2.2, and for the most part it is stable and I've had no problems. I really want to move to Warm Z though and test out the new Sense 2.0.
Definitely root. You will be missing out if you don't.

A previous user posted that the AOSP ROM's tend to have stability issues? I haven't experienced this and to be honest, my favorite ROM used to be Mynn's Warm... LOVED IT!!! That is until I went to CM7 (currently running #11).
Can't go wrong with Skyraider 3.5 or Mynn's Warm. If you want to go with the gingerbread ROM then CM7 has worked VERY well for me.
Good luck !!!

I'm hooked in Incredibly Re-engineered as well. It's gone through several revisions and Chingy051 is very responsive and quick to remedy issues. Also, he's got heaps of mods for his ROM. Once you get used to a 4x5 screen, you won't want to ever go back to 4x4. He also has a new one, Incredibly Re-engineered Z v1.0. It's new, haven't tried it, but its based on the Warm Z ROM.

give another vote for skyraider sense 3.5. that was the only rom that i used until making the switch to cm7. everything you said that you need you should have no trouble getting to work with either of these roms. as was also mentioned previously make sure you look at the known issues lists for each rom you decide to check out, which should be located in each respective op.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I ended up going with Cyanogenmod7 RC2 afterall. Android 2.3.3 and everything works perfectly as far as I've been able to tell. Better battery life too it seems. Thanks again for the suggestions. I may try a few of them so that I can get a feel for each.

BYUsinger84 did you do anything special in flashing Cyanogenmod7 RC2 or did you just do a factory reset , wipe , cache wipe . then flash .
Good choice with CM7. I flash the nightlies whenever they're released and have yet to have a single problem. It's surprising stable and functional.
Skyraider Sense was my first ROM as well, and I loved it, but I could never get rid of CM7 now. It's just got everything I could want and more.

When you say "upgrade" did you literally just flash over your RLS1? If you did, you might wanna wipe and try again. Hopefully you nandroided before you flashed in case you absolutely need to go back to RLS1.
And AFAIK, running the radios on the old framework might be a bad idea. Those radios were built with the 3.70.xx rom updates in mind.

Additionally, I believe Warm Z (RLS1) and Warm TwoPointTwo (RL5) are both up to date with the radios and can run just fine.

What type of stuff is running in the background? The 3.70 software, by nature, has more services running the background. There's quite a few drm services that are tied to the blockbuster app I believe, that run quite a bit. I personally liked the 3.30 software better. It lacks swyoe, but that's very easily fixed. Rls4 is 3.30 software.

With Titanium Backup you can just freeze (not remove) the apps you don't use. Below is an article on rooting, etc. Go to "After Rooting (Optional)" > Setion 2: "Bloatware - The Ugly!" and see which apps you can/cannot freeze. This should help with the the apps you don't want and/or use. I've been running myn's Warm 2.2 RLS 5 for quite some time without any problems doing just this. I say give this a try and see if it works for you. I hope this helps.

Recommend me a ROM please!

I'm not picky here, I just want a stable ROM with 4G and the main stuff working. I just ask that for something with good battery life. I'm currently using Baked Snacks 1.9 and it drains crazy fast.
On a side note, hopefully the installation is easy. Are all the new ROM's requiring you to wipe the SD card, format, etc? What happened to just installing the zip?
I recommend CM7. Use the 7.0.1 stable version.

Destroyer v2 rom or end of days
it's awsome with transitions battery life suks but wwith a custom kernel it's badass
and if u want great battery life flash a kernel for a aosp rom try tiamat's 4.0.2 sbc or savaged zen
for a sense based rom try netarchy oh and dude if u like ur rom but hate battery life u can just flash a kernel
It could be something other than the rom. Have you tried calibrating your battery? If you're in a crappy coverage area, flashing a new rom won't help (much). Also be sure to turn off your radios when not in use - 3g/4g, wifi, gps, bluetooth, etc. When I can, I use wifi. It saves a ton of battery over 3g/4g and it's always faster... at least for me.
But I'd still flash a new rom, just for fun

try the original destoryer rom( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988684&highlight=destroyer ) along with tiamats 3.3.8 or tiamats 3.3.8 with sbc depending if you like sbc or not ( http://www.tiamat-aosp.com/downloads.php/ ). i get about 14-20 hours of moderate to heavy use.
do cm7 for sure.
both of the destroyers are based on cm7, and both are sadly out of date. end of days is the newer version of destroyer, and is more in date, but still flash cm7 nightly.
i would wait until the next nightly comes out. that'll have fixed mms. or just flash stable 7.0.3.1.
either way tiamat 4.0.2 is the bomb.
agreed... cm7 nightlies with tiamat 4.0.2 is killer

it is based on recent cm7 (everything works)
and...
ive found a way to tweak the colors and make it look super smooth!!
but.....
for battery life you can get that with ANY rom. just need to do a little more homework on whats going on with your phones curent congifuration.
Virusrom Gingersense is awesome. Lockscreen and tabs in notification and sweet ass sweet. Long as you use stock kernal everything works. Oh and Virus gives props to the Cyanogen guys for the elements in his rom. Bunch of pretty stuff. Battery life is phenomenal also. Lost 3% idle overnight. I'm happy happy.

[Q] Flashing a custom kernel for Skyraider 4.0 ROM

Hi, I'm kind if a noob. I just recently flashed Skyraider 4.0, which is a custom Sense-based Froyo. I wanted to flash a custom kernel regarding better multitouch and possibly a better barter life on my Incredible. I was hoping to do more than two fingers, especially regarding apps like emulators and an Ocarina app. I know there's one that exists, but I'm afraid of bricking my phone. I just have to ask, because when I was in the latest non-nightly Cyanogenmod 7 ROM, it left me hanging at the white screen. Is there a proper way of flashing a kernel and keep my Skyraider ROM intact? I know I should do a backup, but is there a proper way? Maybe a custom kernel that supports that ROM with better multitouch? If I could get a kernel with 5 or even 10 finger touches, that would be great!
Flashing a kernel is really simple, just like flashing a rom. I'd recommend wiping cache and dalvik cache first (some kernels will automatically do this before installing). I believe Chad's incredikernel (sense version is 12/23) and Lou's #9 are multitouch. Multitouch is dependent on your recovery as well, I used the first post in Chad's incredikernel thread to get multitouch working on my phone, its got some helpful info.
What features are in Chad's kernel out of curiosity?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
Also, would it work no matter what ROM?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
The features are in the first post, can't really remember them offhand. His sense kernel will work on any froyo sense rom, his other kernels are AOSP and mostly gingerbread.
And the Incredikernel is sense Froyo one?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
12/23 was his last Sense kernel.
Anything newer will be strictly for AOSP ROM's.
This is because of issues Sense had with many of his newer updates.
His kernel's are generally undervolted to provide better battery life, and they manage processes in a smarter way. He also sets in a CPU change that will rev down the cpu when you turn off the screen, and this is a big help in battery life for everyone and generally does not compromise any performance. There are numerous other driver updates and whatnot what will further enhance performance, battery life and stability.
I suggest you check it out, though know it only has 2 touches. Kernels with more than 2 touches enabled tend to have a lot of issues with them, I also don't know any off-hand so I can't help you there.
From Chad's OP:
3/5 Multitouch support
Not sure what 3/5 means. There's also a link right below that 12/23 kernel that can help if you're only getting 2 touch points.

From what I remember, some phones can only get 3, 5, or 10 touch points. This is based on your phone's hardware, which no one was able to pin down. I think chad discontinued 10 touch point support since no one will ever need that many.
Basically, provided you followed all necessary steps, that kernel will give you either 3 or 5 points, whichever your phone supports.
