Soap and water to apply protector

Hello xda! This is my first post here, but I've been reading and working off of the hacking forums for a while. I own a Captivate, and I've been having some issues with my screen protector.
Every time I try to get a clean environment, I always end up with dust under my screen protector. I've read on other forums that the best method to ensure a dust-free adhesion is to do the application in a humid bathroom, and to use a drop of soapy water on the sticky side of the protector. Is the Captivate sufficiently water-resistant so that squeegeeing the water into the border of the screen wouldn't cause problems?
I wouldn't be asking if the phone had a borderless screen, but the way it's designed makes me nervous. I just want to be sure those cracks don't lead anywhere.

Yes. That's how most soft protectors are applied. I've applied two different kinds with a soapy water solution. Note; you only need a light mist. Some packages even come with a spray bottle just for this. I've read that liquid dish soap works best as other things like hand soap leaves residue (hand moisturizers and such).
However, another method I like to use is to simply install the screen protector outdoors (obviously away from heavily pollenated areas). You'd be surprised at how much less dust there is in that big scary place with the blue ceiling.

Humid bathroom means you're running a warm shower. If the mirrors and the screen protector are fogging up it's too humid.
I take a bowl and put 2 squeezes of soap into it and then stir it with my finger. Then I dip the screen protector into the bowl (don't forget which side is the sticky one), making sure its thoroughly covered as well as my fingers.
Shake off as much of the soapy water as possible then quickly stick the screen protector on and use your thumbs to slide it in the correct position. Squeege as much water out as possible but otherwise give it a full day or two to dry.
Oh, and take the battery/SIM out of course

Your phone will be fine. Like JPS81 said, use liquid dish soap and just a little bit. Also, when you do the mix, let it sit for 10-15 minutes or until the bubles go away, it will be a whole lot easier when applying the protector. If you are still scare, when you are using the squeege or credit card to take the water out, use a cotton cloth so it can absorb the excess water.

I installed a Bodyguardz screen and full body protector on my Captivate. That requires wetting the protectors and it worked out just fine. I've also done it with Blackberries which have much more spaces liquid can get into and had no problems.
As long as you dry up the drops that squeeze out of the sides, the phone will not really get wet inside. Makes sense to allow it to dry out a bit before putting the battery back in just in case.

I accidentally dropped my Captivate in a bowl of water and it was completely submerged for a few seconds. I took it out, and after wiping it dry it was as good as new.

Applied using this method for the first time with two Captivates - it works great, and even if a little water enters the speaker or the sides, it doesn't hurt it. Anything less than submerging the protectors in water yields really ugly results.

MyTouch 4g Screen protectors...what a pain!

Any recommendations on which are the best and HOW TO INSTALL them the easiest?

Dude, I'm pretty sure there is already a thread on this a few posts below... personally, I find eBay has the cheapest, and as long as you're careful in your application, they work great. I got one that reduces glare and doesn't collect fingerprints like the screen used to. They also have privacy screens, mirror screens, and more. Just depends on how much you pay. If you really have to have a perfect application of the screen and have the money, then get a screen protector at one of those little mall kiosks, where they are usually more than happy to put it on for you, the right way. It just tends to cost more than buying online.

You've got to make sure that your screen is absolutely clean and dustless. If there's dust, a bubble will form around the dust particle and no amount of pushing will get rid of the bubble. I use a lint free wipe (the kind sold for cleaning glasses or computer screens) as well as a piece of microfiber cloth to dry the screen off. Then I blow the screen clean with canned air. I make sure my hands are washed and I don't touch the screen protector directly. I find that even if I hold the screen protector by the edge only, I'll leave at least one speck of dust. Instead, I put a piece of scotch tape on the upper surface of the screen protector and use that as a handle to manipulate the protector while I install it.
I've also had luck carefully lifting off the protector with scotch tape and then sticking the corner of a lint free wipe in, sandwiched between the screen and the protector, to pull out that one last dust particle.

You can save them...use clear packing tape and secure it to a table sticky side up.
Take your screen protector that has the dust (the side that sticks to the screen) face down on the sticky take. Keep a hold of the screen protector by using scotch tape or similar...push down and just pull up...and repeat until the protector is clean and reapply to your phone.

Thats a great idea! Will this also remove finger prints?
I made the mistake of grabbing the sticky side out of frustration and put a nice smudge on it.

Yes it sure will. It will totally clean it off. The only thing that method can't fix are creases or bends.
This way, it'll save you from having to buy more screen protectors since those are still pretty new.

really doesn't matter what type of screen protector it is... I've always found that, Glass Cleaner, blow dryer, and a credit card always work best. Make sure your screen is clean, hold your phone about half of an arms length away, spray the cleaner so there's a light mist of it on the phones screen. Place the screen protector, and the cleaner should give you a bit of play before it's set, get where you want it, use the credit card to remove any air bubbles, and the blow dryer will help dry what little cleaner is left behind the screen protector... I've had my Realook on late November. It's still in excellent condition. I occasionally use scotch tape on one corner to lift it up and remove what little dust collects around the edges.
Another trick I know of is to apply the SP in the bathroom after running the shower on hot for a few minutes. It gets a lot of moisture in the air and causes dust to settle for a bit. Combine that with an impeccably clean screen, careful application (with latex or nitrile gloves if you got some), and a good squeegee and you'll be tip-top.

For those of you with the realook protector, are you having any problems with the proximity sensor on the phone? There's reviews on amazon stating that the realook covers the entire front face of the phone (including the little proximity sensor in the top left). Apparently, this makes it impossible for the phone to tell when it's up to your ear during calls, and subsequently the screen stays dark no matter what you do. Can anyone else confirm this issue, and does your realook screen protector cover just the rectangular lcd screen, or the entire front glass face of the phone?

no, but they do provide a lifetime warranty on your invisibleshield...if anything happens, you send it back and they'll send you a new one free of charge
I love my invisible shields and i put one on every device I won

the invisibleshield has a cutout for the sensor, not sure about the realook one

I have no cut out for the sensors and it covers the entire glass. I've never had problems with the proximity sensor.
However, I do remember reading that they changed their template and that the newer version isn't as good. Might want to look into that before buying.

yeah with ZAGG, you pay a premium, but it also contains the pieces to cover the back and sides of the phone. This + the tmobile clear hard shell case is quite the combo to a protected phone

ive found the screen protectors from BestSkinEver are literally the bestever! haha...but seriously, they are amazing and feel like a soft gel when it completely dries and you'll hafto wait till it completely dries to see how amazing the skin looks. if done carefully (the site provides detailed instructions - water and a tiny bit of soap is needed), you'll have the clearest skin you could want! good luck!

I use the xtreme guard protectors off eBay(kinda expensive $4 for just one) but its perfect for me. Absolutely no air bubbles.

How many goes does take you to get a screen protector on perfectly?

I thought I'd just do a poll, this really could apply to any phone so I put this poll in a popular phone forum section. I remember for my SGS2, it took 7 tries (ie 7 protectors) to get one on perfectly, ie no dust no bubbles whatsoever. That equated to a total wastage of $30+ before finally nailing one.
Just got a new phone (Note 2), bought the Steinheil Ultra Crystal. 1st one in the pack, about 10 pieces of dust. 2nd one in the pack, 3 pieces of dust. Total wastage, $18. FML
I have found if it's not on perfect 1st time, lifting it up to dab away dust with scotch tape introduces more dust.

Apply it in your bathroom with some steam generated by hot shower or crane.

What I find helpful is place the phone on a newspaper. Do not use cloth because it would only create cloth particles and sticking them onto your phone as your breath when applying the screen. In addition, wipe off the screen with a clean cloth dampened with a little ethyl alcohol. Allow the screen to dry and then use another cloth (the ones that come with your screen protectors) to wipe off. Make sure you do this under as much lighting as possible. Once you don't see any specs of dust on the screen start lining up the screen protector from one end of the phone so you know exactly how the screen looks on the phone. The final steps involve peeling off the cover and laying it on the screen. Do this slowly. Press down on the screen as you peeling off the cover. I would not peel off the screen and then stick it onto the phone. This will most likely increase your chance of getting minute dust particles sticking on the screen. Always check for dust on the screen as you go. If you see any, stop right away and blow it off and reapply. This method does not completely prevent the dust particles from sticking onto the screen protector but it will minimize it.

One. I clean the phone with my shirt and water. Clean it with the microfiber cloth. Peel about 1/8 inch off the screen protector, apply to phone slowly while removing film and use the card provided in screen protector box to flatten it our with bubbles. Any bubbles and I lift slightly and re apply. Easy peezy

Use the Hinge method

Just bought a 100x screen protectors for $20 time to try this out

where I work, we have controlled rooms to avoid particulate in the materials, I tried in these rooms, and I can assure that it's better to do it in the shower (LOL)
Or you can buy one of these protectors that include an spray, it's completely safe to put on of these, even in the case you screw it up, you can remove it, and apply more spray and put the protector again.
(i will never buy a normal protector after use the ones with an spray included)

I use the hinge method, works first time most times even in a room with lots of dust.

is it really possible to do it perfectly?
that, I got to see.

Wow you are so lucky your screen didnt break! hope not to come off as patronising but these things break so easy....get that thing some protection man. Mine broke on its first fall.

I've wasted so many with specs of dust ruining it I do them all after I've had a shower while still naked and hot water running and it works every time.

I don't see how a screen protector saves a screen from smashing tho. Gorilla glass is good and I find the closer they are to the lcd the better smash protection.

You guys should try out the SGP Curved Crystal... its freking amazing feels as if theres nothing on your screen.

I got my screen protector on first try...
Currently using a cheapo screen protector I bought from eBay for like a dollar.
Honestly, there's nothing to it.
Clean screen>Placement>Credit card to lightly remove air bubbles>Peel>Microfiber to remove any smaller bubbles.
Bam!

I've been using BestSkinEver for all my devices. Perfect application on first try everytime. That's probably the nature of wet application ones though.

I always use belkin ones, every time it goes on perfect.
Here's a tip if you are getting a lot of dust under it.
Take 2 sticky tapes and place one on the corner of the screen. Lift your protector up with one piece of tape and get that dusty ***** underneath it with the other one.
Also a very good tip! If you are experiencing a lot of dust in your environment whilst placing the protector. Place the protector in the bathroom after a long shower! No kidding!

So, screen sizes getting bigger seems to be making it more and more difficult to apply a screen protector without getting any stray cat hairs or dust in between it and the screen. How do you guys do it, or do you just put up with a bit of dust?
I just got a wet application screen protector today since that was the last kind of protector I successfully applied to a phone (long ago), but that was a no go. It seemed fine until I was done and realized that somehow, from some where, a bunch of hairs got under the protector. I tried to use some tape to get them off but it didn't work, and then I dropped the protector and things just got worse from there.
This was in the bathroom after taking a steamy shower as I have read over and over that it's supposed to get most of the crap out of the air.
How do you guys do it? I have looked it up several times, but I just don't get how these people have such an easy time of it.

I use painters tape after I clean the screen (before applying of course) to make sure no other dust or hairs are on the screen. Use a can of air to blow away crap in your work area also.

The trick is to not use their solution, as they only give you like a tiny vial of solution.
1. Get a plastic cup (I use one of those red beer-pong cups), fill it with warm water to the top, put 2 drops of dish detergent in, swirl your finger in it. That is your solution.
2. Remove the protector from the backing, dip the entire thing into the cup, place it on your screen. You should be able to easily move the protector around the screen to adjust positioning. If you cant, take it off, dip the whole thing in the solution again, and put it on the screen again. Yes, your device will get very wet, but do not worry... it's not a problem at all (I've done this to tons, and I mean tons, of phones/cameras/gps, etc...) Don't worry.
3. Once you're happy with the positioning, use a credit card to squeegee out the water in between. Adjust positioning again to make sure it's perfect, squeegee again. Squeegee a few more times, make sure you've gotten as much water out as possible. If your device has rounded corners (such as the back of the note 2 cover), after you squeegee out all the water the corner will still stick up. Put your finger on each corner for a few seconds, maybe 20-30 seconds if necessary. It will stick.
4. Done. It will be invisible, you will not notice a thing on your phone.

Will this work with SGP Ultra Crystal screen protector? or are they only the non-water applyable?

Can't speak specifically for the sgp but I've been using the wet application method on all my dry application protectors for some time across at least 5 different phone models with no issues. Much easier to apply accurately than dry

I read some where that you should apply it in a bathroom and before you start get a spray bottle and put water in it. A couple sprays in the air before... No dust works for me

Well I just got 2 more cheap protectors in the mail, the first one I tried to get perfect, and each time I tried to get rid of a piece of dust it would get worse. The second one I have one bubble and I gave up. Fine. I have a bubble... oh, and they are cheapo reflectors, and supposed to be matte... so now my screen looks pretty horrible. Sigh. Whatever, my screen is protected. I will get an SGP later and figure something out in the mean time... maybe take them to a tmo store since they did it for me last time and it came out perfect somehow. I think my house is just too dusty, and there's no way to change that. I live in the desert, I have cats, the place is old. Sigh.

omg just did both of the note 2's and it took about 30-40 minutes, ridiculous, but afterwards looks nice till today i had the damn T-Mobile protector on it lol i got tired of seeing T-Mobile =P

Positioning it first without taking off the adhesive side (to know where the edges should be)
2nd.
You must not use a credit card to squegee out bubbles that'll scratch the screen, if you are put a microfiber cloth over the credit card so you'll be pushing down with the cloth not the card

Well i did it at my dining table and i regretted doing so because I ended up getting a few particles underneath, but all you need to do at that point is take any type of sticker (mine came with 2 stickers which were called Dust Removal stickers, but its truly a regular sticker lol) so I had to use that several times, but the final result is great
I ended up ordering the SGP Ultra Crystal and also ordered MobC from amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009M7TZYO/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00) which ended up coming in first, so I am still waiting for the SGP but honestly i do regret ordering them because the MobC are freakin great, crystal clear, and i have no regrets of putting it on!

For with app screen protectors...exactly as Kobe mentioned. Couple of drops / 1 part dish washing liquid to 5 parts water (distilled water if your tap water has too much minerals)...just so the solution is slippery enough for the application process. Run your finger nail down the edge of the credit card / tool your going to use to ensure there are no nicks / sharp edges that will damage / crease your wet app screen protector.
Steamed bathroom also helps.
I recommend dry applications for flat surface...wet applications for curved surfaces.
With dry app screen protectors, those clear / ultra clear packs off of eBay usually work well. The only issues I have seen is that the adhesive may get weak over time (if you need to lift protector to remove dust then press down again) and initial cutouts maybe hard to see from pics. Eventually these dry app screen protectors fall to 3/5/? packs per <$1 ???
Position the dry app screen protector then apply / remove film. There will probably be dust, pet hair, etc. Lift up one corner / side / section at a time and slide the shipping tape between the screen protector and screen (sticky side of shipping tape against sticky side of screen protector)...then press dry screen protector down on the shipping tape which will also press against the screen. Carefully lift the corner / section of the screen protector...then flip the shipping tape over and slide back under between the screen protector and screen (sticky side of shipping tape now facing screen) if needed. Usually the particle is on the sticky screen protector side, but sometimes it maybe stuck to the screen side. The idea is to use a shipping tape with strong enough adhesive to remove the particle without ripping off / damaging the screen protector adhesive. Painting tape adhesive maybe too weak in removing any dust / pet hairs...UPS grade shipping tape maybe too strong...I like Staples equivalent shipping / packing tape...it has just enough adhesive strength to remove any dust / pet hairs.

Got my spigen... I am probably never buying from anyone else. Well, I dunno, but from the packaging to the application I felt like I was using quality. I thought I had ordered the ultra crystal but I actually went for ultra oleophobic for some reason... and I am crossing my fingers that the surface tension changes after some use (doubt it) but it does do what it says, finger prints do not stick. However the down side is the s pen doesn't feel nice against it (it did feel really nice against the crappy matte protector, felt like a pencil on paper, but I couldn't stand the rainbow effect, maybe I will try a spigen matte in the future). Any way, I used the "hinge" technique I saw somewhere online and it worked pretty well. Got 3 pieces of dust under the screen (1 on the screen, 2 on the bezel) and I used some scotch tape to life the protector and one of the included dust removal stickers to quickly take care of the problems.
the protector is FREAKING INVISIBLE! right now the screen is off and I can see reflections, and I can barely make out where the protector ends.
Thanks for everyone who gave me their tips and tricks, I finally have a screen protector on my note that I am happy with.
Also, for those people going naked, it doesn't affect my screen but I saw I already have 2 minute scratches on my screen. I keep my phone in my pocket on its own, and somehow I managed to scratch the screen already (got on release day). I have wasted a bunch of cash getting a screen protector on that I was happy with, and I might spend more in the future, but at least I know that if anything terrible happens I can replace the little piece of plastic instead of forever having to deal with a scratch.
EDIT: playing around with it some and then wiping it off, I already am fine with how the S pen feels. I think it was actually sticking to whatever they used to apply the outer layer of protection that you remove after applying the protector. A little bit more drag then on the naked glass, but I like that I can now get more of a tactile response of my writing. I am hooked on Spigen.

I do all my screen protectors at the dinning room table in about 2 mins with perfect results every time. I attached a few screenies but they really don't do it justice. It is insanely hard to get a good picture of something clear when using a flash. the specks of dust that are noticable are on top of the protector not underneath. I'm using the spigen oleophobic and love them.

This phone especially the screen seems to be a dust magnet...I keep cleaning the screen every often..what are guys doing to keep it dust free?

It's not a dust magnet for me tbh. Are you using a case or bare?

Personally, I keep it in my ass crack. It stays dust free, and also warm in there too. Maybe you could RMA it and get a better one, haha... Seriously? it.is.just.a.phone.like.any.other.

No Case=No Dust

When I see dust on the screen, I wipe it off, just like I did with every other phone I've ever had. If it gets in the speaker grill, I blow the dust out.

I've noticed that my P2XL screen seems to attract dust more than any other phone I've used. I wonder if there is a slight static charge that builds up on the screen.
I'm using a case but the screen is naked. I have a TGSP on order.

This is normal, I had the same issue with my Nexus 6P, I'm OCD about my phone so when I see dust accumulating in the speaker grills and around my case, I use a clean soft bristle toothbrush to "sweep" off all the dust, it works great.

Yeah this phone seems to be extra dust attractive and not just in the edge of the frame.. I was using S8 previously in exact same scenarios and didn't have to wipe it every single time I pulled it out of my pocket.

I never experienced dust issues with my Pixel 2 XL whether using it bare which I have for a month or two but now have a Zizo clear case with temper glass screen protector. Either way didn't experience any dust build up.
Btw if anyone is looking for a case and screen protector Zizo actually have really nice military grade cases. Now I can use my phone freely without being worried about damaging breaking etc

Organic case is best case

I now have the same problem on my new Pixel 7 Pro I bought like a month ago. It's screen is dusty whenever I get it out of the pocket no matter what pants.
Searched everywhere and can't find anything useful. My first guess is some kind of static electricity. I've tried:
• other phones
• anti-static screen cleaner
• letting the battery die and keep it uncharged for like half a day.
• a bunch of different jeans/pants
• even tried vaccum cleaning my pockets and trying to pick up anything that's impossible to see with human eye by a lint roller and duct tape.
Putting on a screen protector film or tempered glass would be my last resort.
After 30 minutes in pocket it looks like this. It's really embarrassing when I have to get it out in front of other people. Also attaching a photo of my pocket so you don't think they are messy or something. Other phones do not have this problem in the same pocket

I am literally having this exact same issue most of the time when it is in my pocket I remove the phone for to be literally covered on dust and you could literally see lines of dust everywhere. Is there any known fix for this or something worth doing

I've decided to put on a screen protector and it helped as much as it's actually usable right now and I don't notice the dust. I almost never notice the protector. It is slim and I suppose is not glass. If it was applied properly near the front camera cutout it would be even better but it was an impulsive purchase after long hours of work at a random local phone repair shop. That should explain the quality of the job. Maybe I should reapply it myself sometime but I can not be bothered

Did that managed to fix the issue as I know others that meantioned a screen protector didn't help much? Never really been a major fan of screen protector so will see how else I get on noticed the scrolling lagged a bit wasn't sure if it was just my model, but the dust cloud was just annoying especially when your out and about. Might give it a go

Without a screen protector the glass will get scratched, just a matter of time. Low humidity allows dielectrics like glass to build up a static charge which invariably attracts dust. An anti static spray would help or perhaps a hydrophilic coating of Prestone Bug Wash Windshield Washer Fluid which I also use. Needs to be applied daily but a few ounces last a long time.
I live in the desert so it's almost always dry. The Zizo case I use on my N10+'s is anti static and doesn't attract dust. I stays clean without much effort on my part. I use the Gorilla IQ Sheild screen protector which is almost as good as the factory installed original one. Together dust isn't a issue in spite of the dusty environment.
Where you stash the phone greatly effects dust exposure. Cotton lined pockets are the worst. Eventually the lint will get in the ports and need cleaning. Polyester, nyon/cotton fabrics don't shed and help keep the phone dust free. I avoid storing my Buds+ case in my front pockets because of the cotton issue. Partial synthetic blend rip stop BDU pants with thigh pockets are perfect though for both phone and Buds+ case.
I use whatever comes in handy...
