hey guys,
I've decided to root my STOCK unlocked HTC DESIRE 2.2 with the latest OTA firmware upgrade...
I just have few doubts, I understand the unrEVOkd software is more like a "one-click" root solution..I like the standard Stock ROM, just want it root for APP2SD+
Q1: Is that all or do I need to have some other preparations? any additional software etc.?
Q2: as soon as I root the device, will I get APP2SD+ or is there a guide I have to follow?
Q3. I believe all my user data will be left untouched after to root, and it wouldn't be like a factory reset or so.
Thanks in advance guys
Cheers
Jackie
A1: You'd have to REMOVE HTC Sync, as it often interferes with the process. Also, You have to put Your phone in usb debug mode.
A2: No, Unrevoked only gives You root, You'll have to install app2sd+ separately (I'm also in the process of finding out how to do it, believe it or not, it's not an easy task to find out here or on google... One thing I know, and already did is to repartition the SD card in phone to allow app2sd to function AT ALL (Rom manager app on market has option to repartition card, but do make a card contents backup first.)
A3: Yes, root is only a "method" of giving You administrative access to system, and it doesn't harm your system at all. Being paranoid or simply cautious, You could make a backup prior to "playing around" )
Finally a proper understandable reply, thanks a bunch.. can you link me to the guide or instructions for partitioning the memory card.. will highly appreciate it..
I believe the partition allows us to put all apps to SD right?
Thanks a lot in advance..
Cheers

I just rooted my HTC Desire using unrEVOked 3.21. Everything was fine. I had superuser permission and so on.
Than i had a sudden reboots. After reboot the N1 gallery crashed. N1 gallery might have cause the reboots. So i remove it and everything is fine till now.
I wanted to load a custom rom. I boot in to bootloader and notice that its s-on.
My question is can I load custom roms with s-on. How come I'm s-on and I have root access. If everything is fine, than what does this s-on do. I'm new at all this, so please bare with me.
Thank you.

S-Off = Full root ( Not really necessary unless you want to write to system and stuff while in Android. you can also change your splash screen if you would like)
S-On with root by unrevoked = Flash custom roms, radios, kernels, etc..
S-On is Sercurity On which means that the System files are only Read-Only.
S-Off uses AlphaRev's Hboot as this removes S-On. Its the Only way to get S-Off. I just S-Offed myself yesterday. It was scary at first but i really think its a good thing as you can use Metamorph/NinjaMorph or stuff.
I'd recommend just keep this information and when you get used to clockworkmod recovery then S-Off.
Remember that to get into recovery you must boot into Bootloader then scroll to Recovery with the volume up and down buttons then press the power down.
Oh, and to scroll between the clockworkmod menu, just use the trackpad. I also would not ecommend using Rom Manager as i remember the first time i used it and booted into recovery i was scqred to death as it brought me to a attention thing. I was scared to death.

Thank you so much.. That was really usefull information bro... you mention that my system files are read only with unrEVOked... yday i used root explorer to change some system files... could that be the cause my device rebooted...
another thing i want to know is that i want to install busybox.. do i need s-off to do this... if i ever hard/soft reset will the busybox also be removed...
and i also removed some stock applications... will they also be reinstalled if i reset my HTC desire...
You dont need S-OFF to install busybox. Dont worry about S-OFF. Most power users dont need it. It's more a liability.
Stock apps may be reinstalled with choosing to install a ROM which includes them. Most ROMS have addon files with stock apps. Or you may choose and pick from a ROM Kitchen.

No problem Last time when i rooted without S-Off, i tried copying things around the system folders and it never worked. That might and should have been the cause of your reboots. The rest of it has been answered by Droidzone

Flashing a ROM is not a big deal. If something happens to go wrong, you can always revert to the Nandroid restore. Custom ROMs often come with different Radios. Just install whichever Radio the developer recommends, and it should go smoothly.
At times a ROM may have different Radios for different functions. Like, if you want the phone running faster, use one radio. If you want more battery life, use another and so on.
If you've already rooted, flashing a new ROM wont create any more trouble than you're already in. Just dont be that hasty to do S-OFF. It's S-OFF that often leads to softbricks (usually).

Hello XDA community!
So totally my first post, regular beginner allowances please :/
I bought an HTC Desire a few weeks ago and rooted it last week. My original goal was to remove some bloatware as this is something i always do on my PCs and was understanding that it was something i could do on my phone as well.
I used the unrEVOked3 rooting method which worked out quite well, I did manage to get 1 red warning screen but that was done performing actions no where described in the rooting process....
I then installed and paid for titanium back up as this seemed like the standard back up app from what I read and also understood it would let me remove the bloatware.
However once i removed the apps with titanium I noticed they returned after a reboot. I did some research online and then tried to remove them with Root explorer, however the same thing happened.
Upon doing some more investigation I have come to believe this is do to my phones Secuflag setting of S-off and how it prevents altering the /system folder where these apps are located.
I starting looking into S-off and ended up back at unrEVOked's site investigating unrEVOked forever. I read as much as I could on this and figured i would give it a shot, however it failed which I now believe to be because my radio version was too new.
I am now looking at the Alpha Rev method for getting S-off. I have come across some information on XDA that says altering the Secuflag is one of the few things that can actually brick your phone, along with altering your radio version.
So I am nearing the decision to perform the alpha rev S-off but I figured I would risked looking like a scrub on the forum and asking n00b questions at the benefit of getting the OK on my actions from someone who is more confident in their knowledge then myself.
So here come my questions:
Will Alpha-Rev work with my radio version of 5.11.05.27.
Will the live CD method work if I virtually mount the ISO or do i need to actually burn the disc.
Is there another method I could use to remove the bloatware without risking bricking my phone.
I read alot about lag fixes for other phones, is there a known one for the stock Desire rom ?
Some additional information on my phone

Thanks in advance for any and all help. I really love this site and can't read enough.
Search on removing system apps with adb while in recovery. Then there is no need to S-off.
If you still want to S-off read the AlphaRev site careful and you should be good. There is also a tutorial thread how to S-off which also mentions the virtual machine way. (used it my self)

Thanks for the help ! I have seen some ADB tuts for removing apps but i didn't to closely because i figured i would hit the same wall.
I will probably S-off at some point in the future but one step at a time I suppose.
Don't know what you mean, if you are rooted you can remove system apps while in recovery.

Hey,
I just successfully removed the Stock widget via adb as a test. thanks for the help. I will now go through the process of removing all the stuff i want off of there.
I am rooted, I am not sure where you were confused on my last comment. but I am on the right track now for removing bloatware thanks again !
I was confused about the wall you hit, but if you successfully removed something it's fine. Just make sure you do a nandroid before removing more stuff and keep in mined you can't remove everything without consequences.
The apps listed here should be safe to remove.
Thank you for the additional list of apks which I can remove. I was using one from cyanogen also as a guide.
There is one app which I seemingly cannot find in /system. Its listed in my app drawer as Asphalt 5 [ its a stupid racing game ] In titanium backup once deleted it shows. com.gameloft.something something [ not looking at TB right now ] however i cannot find either names in /system and the game still shows up in my app drawer, IT REALLY BUGS ME. I actually work in the video game industry and having such a **** game from a **** company on my phone is like chewing chalk for me.
any ideas ?
I don't think that the game is in the system partition, I bet it's in data/app. But if you want to remove data apps just go to market or settings-applications-manage applications and uninstall it from there.
Yea, I had tried removing it via the settings > application route and uninstall was grey'd out. That was my first like "umm i own this phone why can't I do this moment" which lead to everything since then.
Its not in the "My apps" list in the market place either. Its really weird did shows no file size in the manage applications menu. like everything is 0.0 kb. I am going to try to do a full install of it tonight when i get back on wifi ( is a big d/l ) then see if it shows up somewhere....
Hy guys, i got one question regarding my brothers desire. he has unrooted desire and the main problem is low memory. he doesn't want me to unroot him and s-off and put some other rom so he can get better things out of his phone but it is what it is
My question is, if i format his sdcard, and put for example 512 or 768 mb of ext3 partition, should phone recognize by it self that external partion the next time card is pluged in phone, or i need to format sdcard and make hard reset to make thing work? or maybe neither option will work? So i need your suggestion and help with this one.
Best regards
To answer your question in a nutshell, no. He'll still be able to only move the apps that allow external storage, regardless of partition or size.
This is why I rooted my phone in the first place and after a lot of reading went for the safest option, due to a lack at the time of Linux knowledge. I rooted but left S-On and used a series of Sense ROM's that allow any app (apart from System apps obv.) to be moved to the ext 3 partition. Eventually settled on LeeDroid's - my favourite sense rom.

if i just root him with unrevoked metod, and left s-ON, will i still have recovery such as amom ra or cw recovery?
ok to reformulate my question, i can use unrevoked and unroot phone. And then i don't need to s-off or anything.
I would do the following and i would like if you can tell me that's the right way.
1. get the drivers that are needed for unrevoked method and root
2. do the rooting stuff
3. from there on, i can format my sdcard trueout Cwrecovery which camed with unrevoked method
4. put wanted rom on root of sd card and make backup first
5. wipe all and flash a new rom
Is that the right way?
Sounds right to me.. use the search though mate you will find your answers there. Especially look at the stickies under Desire Q&A

Before all jump on me being noob, yes I watched video and read rules. I hope I post this thread in place where it belongs.
I am not native English speaker so please don't throw me in fire if you see some writing errors.
I have always been Nokia user, from 1995 to this day, and now I got HTC Desire, it is old but I got it for free, it was in the box almost 1-2 years (never used) and that person discovered it before a month and gave it to me because he don't need it.
This thing is along first editions by the look of it, Android 2.1 Eclair, Amoled
I have updated it to latest official update (as I can remember 2.2.2)
I got spare MicroSD card (8GB class 10) and it working good with it (looks better then 4GB one I got with phone)
I also added some aps etc..memory was soon filled..I saw on Google that its common problem.
Now after some intro..lets go to my questions..
1. My goal is to root device and put best/stable rom with HTC Sense thing, mostly for additional memory on SD and as I did understand better control and speed of my phone - is that correct?
2. Is it possible to back-up EVERYTHING on my phone, store it to PC, and return it if I am not happy with new ROM, so I can continue to use it exactly where I left it with all my apps and file there?
3. I really don't know anything about android (some things I have read about rooting on google..) so I would need help, someone to point me at correct tutorials and rom to download. Maybe I am Android noob but I am good with PC so dont worry I will make some noob mistakes while rooting and adding new rom.
All my phone info I could find:

If someone have will to help I would be grateful.
try this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
pretty straight foward, next time please search before starting a new thread
and if that doesnt work, search how to root desire with revolutionary
i first started with this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
very helpful if you don't know anything about what you're doing (like you and me) ^^
the most difficult question would be, which ROM to use. you said you'd like to keep Sense.
well here is an overview of every ROM you can get for your desire:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809328
find out the differences between them, and then decide which one suits you best. but don't be afraid to try non-sense (haha, no pun intended ) ROMs.
now some explicit answers:
(1) yes, almost every ROM allows you to move internal storage to your SD and some even speed up your device. with some you could experience reboots now and then, but thats rather rare.
(2) yes, you can backup everything. there are two ways to do that:
a - NANDroid backup: it creates some kind of an image (like the .ISO is the image of a DVD), which can be restored, so that your phone looks the same as before.
i recommend it every time you change or update your ROM. NANDroid backups are available after you rooted and S-OFF'd your device.
b - there are many apps on the market to backup nearly every part of your user data. the most popular is Titanium Backup. it can make a copy highscores, user input like passwords, bookmarks of your browser, and so on.
contacts can usually be secured via your googlemail account.
all of those backups can and will be placed on you SD card, from where you can easily copy them to your desktop pc.
question 3 is already answered...keep an eye out for sticky threads (the ones pinned on top of every sub-forum) and you will find all the information needed.
good luck.
The easiest way to learn about android is to test it out..play with it as much as you want and about rooting use revolutionary, it's the fastest and easiest method. Also, about restoring your Rom, you can do that by backing it up in recovery, nandroid backup as they call it.

the two guides linked in the posts 2 and 3 are quite outdated. neither even mention revolutionary.
revolutionary does not give you root. it performs s-off. root comes after flashing the superuser.zip.
@OP, i always recommend this set of guides, which explain a bit more in detail about what everything is first, so you can get an understanding of what you're doing before you do it (just as important!). the video guide is also useful to take you through the actual process.
take your time, i'm sure you'll eventually find what you want :good:
Thanks to all, I will "study" all links before proceed, Like I said I was just looking for few answers with directions of correct tutorials.
hmm..after reading all that stuff I am just confused.
Can anyone point at step-by-step tutorial of how to just make my phone have additional memory on SD card, I want to keep my official 2.2.2. ROM with all apps installed.
As I understand I need to root phone and make some linux partition on SD.
Now, I don't know how to keep apps already installed etc so thats where you guys step in with tutorials for my problem.
Few things to keep in mind:
I dont want S-OFF if not needed
I dont want to change my RADIO, ROM or whatever.
Just additional memory on SD card.
Thanks advance.
in that case you should take a look at this:
Link2SD
it's an application that allows you to move apps to your 2nd SD partition. no need to flash ROMs or anything else.
the only premise is that you need root.
i don't know if this app has any disadvantages...
but i recommend you to take a closer look at flashing ROMs anyways, because most people (including me) claim that their phone was kinda revived with a new custom ROM.
it's really worth a try. sure, there's a huge amount of reading involved, but in the end it's simpler than you think.

first you need root to install titanium backup then, you can take complete backups of your apps, cuz installing a custom ROM will surely destroy the apps.......just take your time, you'll get it........ I took 3 Weeks like you , reading, searching and reading some more..... Then i started doing, and all things fell in place., 1 year has passed and not looking back....

it does take a lot of time to understand it all, that's a good thing. many people with no experience with rooting have used the guides successfully
as above, links2sd should work. however, i was exactly the same, thinking i didn't want a custom rom, just thought i wanted more memory. but a custom rom is well worth the time when you find the right one for you. :good:

s-off is not absolutely necessary, but is much more versatile, and more useful if things go wrong in the future. revolutionary will perform s-off anyway, and is ideal for your hboot version. don't be scared of it.
upgrading radio is not absolutely necessary
So after all readings and courage building, today I have decided to run operation X (lol)
Here is what I have done for now:
1. Done many things with PC drivers and comms PC-Mobile
2. S-OFF via Revolutionary
3. Denied CUSTOM RECOVERY from Revolutionary, read somewhere that 4EXT Recovery Touch is better. (I hope I didn't do something wrong with this decision)
4. Installed 4EXT Recovery Touch - custom recovery
5. From Recovery installed Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed
Now, it looks like I have now HTC Desire with S-OFF and root.
If I understand correctly now I can install titanium backup and also do nandroid backups.
After all backups I do, then I can proceed to new custom roms, extend memory to SD etc..still I am not sure do I want do more then extend mem.. Well, with time I will probably explore new roms just for fun or whatever.
But for today I have done enough (too much stuff in short time for newbee ))
BTW for now all has gone without problem or errors.
Thank everyone on help.
