I am getting sick of my Zune and all its glitches and issues, and want to use my phone as my go-to pmp. the ONLY think keeping me from switching however, is the headphone volume. It is painfully low, almost to the point of absurdity.
My DInc is rooted with s-off running stock sense. How can I fix my volume problem?
Try AudioManager Widget.
That looks to be just a run of the mill volume manager. I need to actually make the headphone volume louder than it normally is.

Have you tried DSP Manager? You can change the levels of different frequencies independently; although, I'm sure you would turn them all up if you want it all louder lol

You actually need it LOUDER than the maximum? What the hell.... The max is way louder than my old iPod went and that thing's max was too loud
Try PowerAmp. It really increases both the headphones and the external speaker. Open the program, go into Menu/Equalizer, then you'll see a button labeled "Pre", open that and you will see a series of presets. Look for the "Phone Speaker (Loud) and click on that. You should definitely see a major increase in loudness.

this has been my #1 gripe about this phone since day one, also the stock music app is so boring but anyway..... Unfortunately I have never found a solution. What I did do is format all my mp3's to 320kbps and up and bought a pair of super bass sony earplug headphones, the ones that have a shiny color (ex: gold, silver, red) Now when Machinehead or Tool are killing it I just turn the volume up to max and its almost enough to rock out. You would figure HTC could fix this kind of easy and yet here we are.
It seems not many people have this problem. I have a pair of cheapish headphones and you can hear them across a room when its 3/4 Max volume.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
The problem isn't the phone, it is the headphones themselves. The headphones impedance is too great for the phone to handle. For example, I own a set of Beyerdynamic DT 770's. The impedance on them are 250 Ohms. Not able to really get them loud but plug in my Denon buds that are 16 Ohms and the difference is night and day. Don't blame the phone. Want it louder? Get a portable amplifier. Namely the Total BitHead is amazing and I am a current owner of it and use it with my DInc. Again, it's not the phones fault or HTC's fault. Get new headphones or use an amp.

As I've noticed the volume of the sound on the earphones when listening music or radio is very low when compared to an iPod or a cheap mp3 player. I mean, come on my old iPod nano (2006 model) is a lot louder than the Desire at full volume, I could safely say double of it! When I'm in the bus or the train it becomes annoying that I have my music at full volume and still I can barely listen to it. I didn't pay for the desire to then have to carry an ipod only for listening to music! Come on HTC!! Anyways, is there anything I can do to increase the maximum sound volume?

Buy expensive earphones.
It's not the earphones, I use my apple earphones and when using them with my iPod nano the sound is very loud so it's not that.
You can try "Volume Unlock" on the market. There is a trial version. It slightly increase the volume, but it doesn't work with the radio app.
maybe richards kernel with audiomod

with kind regards..Alex
I agree, a £500 phone with a £1 speaker, it's borderline criminal..
anyway, if you're rooted you might wanna try 'Pershoot's audiomod' which can be found in Richard Trip's custom kernel for the Desire...it may help a little bit

hi i had the same feeling when i got the desire whit stock rom but now whit custom rom theres DSP manager this boost the headset and helps whit volume i only use roms whit this cooked in hope this helps
I once had RCMixHD 0.6 with Richard's kernel installed on my phone but didn't noticed much difference. So I guess the audiomod is not the solution. I understand why the speaker can't be made to be louder but for the earphones, it's ridiculous, it can't be a hardware limitation! Maybe if a developer did something for it... it would be very nice and I can't see why this isn't so much of a discussed issue for the desire. It should be. Anyways I'll try now these apps from the market to see if anything works. Thank everyone!
Install OpenDesire ROM and see the difference. Dont ask me why but this ROM significantly boosts all audio even the headset audio is boosted.

Well try louder volume hack lvh in market work well also dsp from cyanogen rom can work on some others too open desire for example.
Another option Bluetooth headphones as they have own amplifier or those noise reduction head phones again some have own amp and should offer better listening too

This is caused by EU Laws about loudness at mobile Devices. Use DeFroST or CyanogenMod and you so not Kongress have to care about it.
BTW - every Smartphone and Handy has this low noice since 2 Years. Only iOS does not care about it by stock.

Or try PowerAMP with EQs - and use for example "Phone Speaker(Loud)". That's what I do.

I would like to use my Evo as a MP3 player when I exercise like I used to with my old Sony Ericssons and my iPhones, but the sound quality compared to just about every other phone or mp3 player I have ever owned is not very good.
Right now I am running Ava's Z3 ROM. It's supposed to have some audio enhancements. I also bought PowerAmp and use DSP Manager. I configure and tweak as much as I can. I would like the sound to be a bit louder through the headphones. The phone speaker and in-call volume are fine.
As far as I am aware there is no way whatsoever on this planet that the headphone volume can be increased, even if just a small amount, to the HTC Evo.
So beyond what I have done already, does anyone have any more ideas on how to get better sounding and perhaps louder music without actually having to change the mp3 itself?
Thanks!
Change your kernel.

I read that some kernals can up the speaker volume and in-call volume but don't have much effect on media stuff, especially when it comes to headphones.
Is there a specific kernal you know of that boosts headphone volume?

Sorry I did a search, but just in the Q&A forum.
Some people are happy with the volume of the phone. I'm just used to things being a bit louder. When I'm running I hate hearing the sound of my feet and the wind etc..etc. The headphones I use have an impedance of 16. Is that too much?
My evo plays music at a very low volume at max, and i can barely hear music at all using my headphones at the train station. So how would i be able to hack the volume or something to get the same volume an ipod would get or similar.
Thank you in advance )!

DSP Manager app, but it requires root. But be aware, boosting volume with the built in speaker will likely blow it. And boosting it in headphones will result in distorted audio, as the evo just doesnt have a powerful sound output.

Using Shure earphones here. I just use Bass Boost. The equalizer really doesn't help much. It can get pretty distorted, but if you play around with it, it can get a bit louder.
The funny thing is when I had HW 0002 my speaker was loud as hell. After I had to bring it back after my RSA keys got hosed, I got a 0003 and it wasn't as loud. I was pretty sad since I use my phone for music on poker nights. lol
Yea, now that I think about it, it MAY be hardware version specific. My first Evo was a 003, and it actually didnt sound too bad with DSP manager, just boosting the bass and treble a tiny bit. But now I have a 004, and it sounds horrible with anything turned on in DSP.

Its possible, since the 0004 version had SLIGHT changes, as we know with the camera, ect. We OP, as we said, dsp manager can help if you configure it correctly. Just raising everything max is a no no...couldn't tell you how often I see that.
I suspect they changed something with the audio/output between HW 003 and 004. My Evo is 003, and it's got weak output -- my GF has 004, and it's significantly better sounding out the external speaker.
How is your external speaker (eg speaker phone, music, etc) sound quality?
Got my Dinc2 on Friday and the sound quality is terrible. There's a buzzing sound almost as if the speaker is blown or loose.
My original Dinc had surprisingly good sound from the external speaker even at higher volumes.
just went from My Dinc to Dinc 2 today. the first song I played you can really tell the difference and see how bad the Dinc 2's speaker is compared to its original
Yeah, its really bad, it cracks/pops a lot too. When I hook it up to my car stereo thru a headphone cable, it cracks a lot too, I think maybe the way the phone processes audio isn't the best. Could be my cord though. I'm disappointed in the sound, other than that though, I love the phone. Came from Droid 2.

There seems to be an overdrive issue (overdrive meaning pushing too much through the audio ports, be it headphones, bluetooth, or the speaker). I've noticed it seems to vary based on media volume controls, and HTC seems to have implemented a large array of media volume controls that step on each other.
This is one of the reasons I'm really looking forward to ditching Sense and getting back to CM. I need more predictable media controls.
sound issues
Came from a blackberry to the I2, it seems to me that I'm not getting the volume on notifications and what not, keep missing them. I did notice that the head phone jack was pretty sloppy when trying to use the head phones, had to tinker with it to get it to work, haven't found a good way to hook to my car stereo yet as it doesn't have Bluetooth or a way to plugin, any suggestions on good devices are welcome.
Mine definately sounds like it's in a tin can, but i don't have any popping. I think with the right audio manager to correct some of it, it should be fine once we get root.
Mine is pretty rough also. I was sorta shocked at the quality of it on such a nice phone
I guess I was lucky...mines pretty good

I am also very disappointed with the sound quality of the Dinc 2. Is it a software issue or a speaker problem? I just hope it can be fixed or it may be a deal breaker for me. HTC really blew this one.
i did notice that it can sound a little better by turning on the SRS enhancement mode but not good enough to satisfy me.

Its gotta be a software issue, speaker and earpiece speaker sound pretty poor compared to Inc 1 at medium to higher volumes.. maybe update or custom roms will fix.. really my only complaint with this phone besides the custom options I've grown used to on sr4.0 and cm7

I've found something interesting about this issue.
When playing from any media player playing local media, or playing from Slacker, I get problems with playback quality on the speaker and through bluetooth (not so much through headphones though). However, pure streaming media (such as DI FM's app) is clean and clear on the speaker and on bluetooth. This definitely smells of a software problem.
The I2 does have SRS support. Unfortunately the only SRS controls I've seen are in video playback, and it's just a toggle. I've read about other devices having audio quality problems with SRS and I wonder if this is what's going on. I've tried digging around to see if I can completely disable it, but no luck yet. Might have to dig in under the hood.
External speaker is a bit sub-par, but all other audio on mine (including earpiece speaker, headphones, and bt) sounds fine. I could see it being a software issue, though, based on the other replies here.
SRS can also be turned on through the stock music app. Sounds better but not great

That could be why I missed it there. I don't use the stock app.
So, thanks to the unlock finally being released, I'm running CM7 now. My bluetooth audio seems to have cleared up, no more overdrive effect coming through my car speakers. I don't think the external speaker is up to par, still, though. However, bluetooth audio definitely improved, at least so far. Needs more testing.
We received two Dinc2 last week at different day, first one sounds like rock in tin can, it buzz at higher volume, and the lower frequency range is horrid, lots of distortion. my 2nd Dinc2 sounds much better and do not have the same characteristics as the first one, but it is still not as good as the fascinate they replaced. I requested to get the first one replace and VZW is sending me another one, it's definitely not normal when I compare both Dinc2 side by side listening to the same clips, first one is significantly worst.
I wish the speaker was abit louder.. i haven't had any crackles or pops though.
Coming from my original dinc the higher volumes on the dinc 2 do cause a lot of crackling. Listening to the howard stern show I can't have the volume all the way up like I used to :/ .

The "Jack" on this phone is fine. I've tried several audiophile ear buds and headphones and find this phone with power amp to be pretty good. Music volume EQ is a decent app too if you want more bass and loudness.
Ditch the beats and get some vsonic or some klipsch and you'll see.

Download Neutron Music Player. It's worth paying for!! Its sounds much better than power amp(my old player); its louder, offers better headroom/snr ratio, direct hardware control, and doesn't lose any clarity, when using EQ. Also, Check to see what setting your music is encoded at. 320kbps for MP3 is the highest setting, but I go with Flac. If you know the basics of setting up an EQ and want great sounding audio, then download neutron! It actually gives an accurate representation of the music, as opposed to most mods which are meant to "Enhance" your listening experience, but don't depict the true sound of the recorded audio. Whenever I mix down a new recording, I trust Neutron with my MDR's, SE215's, and grado's headphones for the true sound! For fun, I add about 3-5db around 40-50hz for some extra punch; especially when bumping some electronic or hip hop. Furthermore, I wouldnt recommend beats headphones. They're tuned strictly for hip hop and electronic music. They add all sorts of obnoxious EQing at 50-80HZ, 3khz, 5khz, 7khz, and 10khz, so they'll sound like garbage on any other genre of music. I attached a link of how sloppy the frequency response is on these so called, "Studio" headphones. If you're looking for a great headphone, check out head-fi.org. They offer reviews of over 266 headphone, arranged by price range. Let us know how you make out!

One of the biggest reasons I choose Android over Apple is for the audio. Although the volume of music on Apple products reach unbelievable heights, the sound quality itself is not any better than what most Androids have to offer, even on their stock music players. Furthermore, why would you even want to listen to your music at top volume on an iPhone? You'll be deaf within a minute.
Our Galaxy S3 has absolute trash for presets. Listen to every single preset. You'll find that most of them will raise the volume of vocals when there's no background bass, and the vocals volume will lower when the bass kicks in again. It's annoying, it sounds as of you're putting your head next to a speaker, and shaking it around so that the music gets a wavy effect. Thankfully, Samsung gave us a beautiful option at the bottom of the list of those poor excuses for presets, called "Custom." In it is a 7 band equalizer that's actually very damn decent.
The Beats by Dre, although frowned upon, is perfect for the equalizer on the S3. I myself, am a basshead. I love my music to have some rumble and thump to it. Just play around with the bands until you find the perfect eargasm type sound. What I love on the S3, is that the volume is quite loud. With most phones, equalizing audio sacrifices a lot of volume. With this phone, my equalizing will barely phase the volume of my music.
When I equalize, it'll go something like this: The lowest (first) band will be set the highest, giving the music that precious deep rumble, but adding punch as well. The second band is set significantly lower than the first in order to retain that punchy bass. This makes the vocals sound more shallow though, but I dont care too much because I hate flat bass. The third band effects both bass and vocals about equal, so I set it to about midway between what the first and second bands are set at. This gives the vocal a deeper touch, but doesn't take too much away from bass punch. The middle band is what mainly effects vocals. I set it one below the third, because setting it too high gives the vocals a bit of an airy or dry sound to it. For the fifth band, I put it one higher than the third. The last two band are set higher than every band except for the first one. It livens up the treble so that the instrumentals don't sound boring.
My equalizer preset is extremely coloured, but that's just how I like it to sound. It's almost a V shaped equalizer I guess. Big bass, recessed mids, and high treble. I have the V-Moda Crossfade LP's for my headphones.
I dunno, this post might not have been of much help, but I just felt as if I should offer my 2 cents.
For some reason having beats makes you a complete moron now a days ?The reason I have beats is beacuase one of my fav genres is hip hop, and when it comes down to it, beats sound decent when it comes to rap/hip hop you cant deny it. For every thing else yes they are trash so I use my M50s.

I've owned a pair and can honestly say my daily use creative aurvana buds sound better than any beats I've tried. Hip hop is my music of choice.
The Yamaha eph-100's are great for hip hop too..
$150 can get you some iems that are twice as good for half the price of beats.

But he has the ATH-M50, which are seriously good headphones
I wasn't happy either with the S3 sound, having heard what a quality is, I bought the cheapest decent DAC - Fiio E7 and it sounds great with my M50's
