I would like to use my Evo as a MP3 player when I exercise like I used to with my old Sony Ericssons and my iPhones, but the sound quality compared to just about every other phone or mp3 player I have ever owned is not very good.
Right now I am running Ava's Z3 ROM. It's supposed to have some audio enhancements. I also bought PowerAmp and use DSP Manager. I configure and tweak as much as I can. I would like the sound to be a bit louder through the headphones. The phone speaker and in-call volume are fine.
As far as I am aware there is no way whatsoever on this planet that the headphone volume can be increased, even if just a small amount, to the HTC Evo.
So beyond what I have done already, does anyone have any more ideas on how to get better sounding and perhaps louder music without actually having to change the mp3 itself?
Thanks!
Change your kernel.
There was just a thread about this here:

I listen to music on mine all day long in a pretty loud environment (well, a lot of fan noise anyway) with no issues at about 3/4 volume . . . so I think the problem some people are having are with the earbuds/headphones they are using. Maybe try some with a lower impedance.

I read that some kernals can up the speaker volume and in-call volume but don't have much effect on media stuff, especially when it comes to headphones.
Is there a specific kernal you know of that boosts headphone volume?
Thanks!

Sorry I did a search, but just in the Q&A forum.
Some people are happy with the volume of the phone. I'm just used to things being a bit louder. When I'm running I hate hearing the sound of my feet and the wind etc..etc. The headphones I use have an impedance of 16. Is that too much?

As I've noticed the volume of the sound on the earphones when listening music or radio is very low when compared to an iPod or a cheap mp3 player. I mean, come on my old iPod nano (2006 model) is a lot louder than the Desire at full volume, I could safely say double of it! When I'm in the bus or the train it becomes annoying that I have my music at full volume and still I can barely listen to it. I didn't pay for the desire to then have to carry an ipod only for listening to music! Come on HTC!! Anyways, is there anything I can do to increase the maximum sound volume?

Buy expensive earphones.
It's not the earphones, I use my apple earphones and when using them with my iPod nano the sound is very loud so it's not that.
You can try "Volume Unlock" on the market. There is a trial version. It slightly increase the volume, but it doesn't work with the radio app.
maybe richards kernel with audiomod

with kind regards..Alex
I agree, a £500 phone with a £1 speaker, it's borderline criminal..
anyway, if you're rooted you might wanna try 'Pershoot's audiomod' which can be found in Richard Trip's custom kernel for the Desire...it may help a little bit

hi i had the same feeling when i got the desire whit stock rom but now whit custom rom theres DSP manager this boost the headset and helps whit volume i only use roms whit this cooked in hope this helps
I once had RCMixHD 0.6 with Richard's kernel installed on my phone but didn't noticed much difference. So I guess the audiomod is not the solution. I understand why the speaker can't be made to be louder but for the earphones, it's ridiculous, it can't be a hardware limitation! Maybe if a developer did something for it... it would be very nice and I can't see why this isn't so much of a discussed issue for the desire. It should be. Anyways I'll try now these apps from the market to see if anything works. Thank everyone!
Install OpenDesire ROM and see the difference. Dont ask me why but this ROM significantly boosts all audio even the headset audio is boosted.

I did that too but I think it was worse...
Well try louder volume hack lvh in market work well also dsp from cyanogen rom can work on some others too open desire for example.
Another option Bluetooth headphones as they have own amplifier or those noise reduction head phones again some have own amp and should offer better listening too

This is caused by EU Laws about loudness at mobile Devices. Use DeFroST or CyanogenMod and you so not Kongress have to care about it.
BTW - every Smartphone and Handy has this low noice since 2 Years. Only iOS does not care about it by stock.

Or try PowerAMP with EQs - and use for example "Phone Speaker(Loud)". That's what I do.
Better Headphones would help since they can close out more noice from the surrounding

maybe you can change the speaker hardware manually with other that have same dimension.
Just purchased Note-2 last week and was upset to know this.
MP3 music volume is low compared to galaxy S-2(my previous mobile) even with different headphones.
I am surprised to know, note-2 is expensive but how come inferior with music.
Annoying thing is if I go to custom equalizer and increase 14k or any slider, the effect is there but volume decrease further. The higher I move slider, the further music volume decrease.
What is this? Help is appreciated, any way to boost its volume. (without rooting)
Thanks,

Definetly volume is much higher than S2. it is in par with S1. maybe your loud speaker is faulty.

I am concerned mainly with headphone volume, that is low.
Pl. share if music sound decreases in your Note-2 when you move equalizer sliders up?

sorry. i never use it with headphones. i mainly leave it at my desk in work and hear some music.
maybe someone else can comment on headphone sound.:good:
Get Noozxoide Eizo app from Play Store. Should help boost the volume.
Is it just me or are the new speakers much softer than the previous N7? It does sound much better with the Stereo setup instead of Mono, but the volume just seems low even at max volume. Maybe its just me...
The new Nexus 7 speakers are much louder for me than the old ones.
Speakers have plenty of volume...

I am also in the same boat. Low Sound and I was wondering a way to check it.
Also, i tried listening to it by placing my ears on the speakers and I am not able to hear anything from the top speakers at all. The down seem to work fine.
So can you check and let me know which speakers are affected and also what are you software version or and using any custom rom?
I am on stock, Unrooted, locked and nothing changed from me till yet.
Mine is also not loud and I hear sound form both speakers . I just tested it against my phones and........galaxy s3, galaxy s2, galaxy note 2 are louder by alot.
Make sure you guys are testing with the right things, for example with music or podcasts mine are very loud and its great but Youtube can be sporadic because not every video is made well and the sound doesnt get through. If you are watching a professional channel then they should be great but some people dont do too well with the sound on youtube. Also netflix for me is very loud and clear and overall everything is much better than my original N7

my speakers work fine and loud. But i read somewhere that due to the angle of the speakers (almost rear facing), some people have complained about weak speakers.
I have sound mod increase by 50 percent for my gs3. Wonder if it would work with the nexus 7. Prolly not as 4.3 might have different files.

So I just got a lg g3 today and I rooted it and I installed viper4android but it seems that the audio performance isnt so great. I had a HTC m8 with viper 4android and using the same headphones that i used on my g3. The m8 sounded way better and it would hold its bass and not sound distorted but on my g3 I can't have a clear sound it sounds distorted with the same v4a setting from the m8. So my question is ,can I swap the m8 audio drivers/proccesor on my g3? Or is there any alternatives ? Thank you !!I
Why would you mod G3 as it has one of the cleanest audio output out there?
I thought the same thing about my m7s audio. it was superb. The G3 just can't compete . It also sounded way better when paired with my mylink in my car
I haven't noticed any sound distortion, and has seemed pretty clean with good bass. Admittedly so far I have only used cheap earbuds, and not any of the decent headphones I have.
I mean it sounds distorted with v4a when I crank the bass up. my m8 never sounded bad like this when I cranked up the bass.
Try poweramp dudes
It won't do anything different it's like the audio driver can't handle a lot of bass or it will sound weird
I've tried viper. And poweramp and both of them do t have really good sound like a stock m7 or please forgive me but an iphone lol
Yes exactly same here idk what it is lol the m8 sense model sound good and the gpe m8 sounded better ,is it the kernel or something ?
I tried enabling art runtime and idk if its just me but it sounds a little better

I know this is a year old post but I would like to answer your question: I just got an LG G3 and I was also under the impression that the sound quality would be stellar. But lo and behold, I plug my headphones and notice that for every touch action performed, there is a hiss lasting about 5 seconds. Every. Damn. Time. And the sound quality (with FLAC files) is as dirty as it gets: distortion and clipping.
I could not believe it. 2014's flagship phone with the crappiest audio I ever heard?
I read about the "make a call at the start of the day" fix (which sounds ridiculous), switching to Bluetooth headphones, or learning to deal with it.
I was losing hope until I was pointed to this thread.
I had to root and edit a system file, no big deal for many of us, but a big deal for other buyers.
Problem is solved and, while the sound quality is now very good, it is so after a fix that involves rooting the phone. So theoretically, the LG G3 has very decent audio quality AFTER you modify its internal settings.
So i replaced my car stereo completly removed it put in a trio tablet as a head unit wired to my factory amp sounded like crap most of the time i got bored and hooked my. G3 up and its stock music player with no tweakes throught the headphone jack sounds better than the tablet with all kinds of auido tweaks all of u need to download g3 volume boost on the market increase all values +8 to 10 on top of stock valuse it makes it louder i get a little distortion +10 or more than stock but sounds great all ways speakerphone headset volume headphone volume and auxilary vol
Hello I am new to the forums.
I am very obsessed with good audio quality, this was the main reason why I got this new phone, but so far I have been very disappointed by its audio capabilities while listening with Bose Sound True earphones.
The first thing I did on my 10 was to download poweramp, configured my equalizer to a standard warm sound signature, then set bass to medium and sparkle to a little pass medium. Basically the same sound equalization I have on my m7. Next, I configured the headphone profile; in this case I end it up with the volume at the the lowest for all frequencies, as I was able to faintly hear all of them from the low to the highs at the lowest volume. Afterwards, I set up the dobly headphone effects to HTC ear buds.
I was very disappointed by the outcome, the low frequencies have a small distortion and the highs sound washed off. I no longer hear all the instruments playing as the lows drown more subtle instruments and the highs have very little clarity to them, they just sound loud and obnoxious. My m7 with Beats on picked up all the subtleties in my music and the lows had this pleasant fullness to them. The 10 is louder but that's about it, it now even hurts my ears when I listen past medium volume. How is this possible? Isn't the DAC on the 10 way better than that of the m7? Could this be faulty hardware? or could it be a software related issue?
Please help me figure out whats going on, I can't believe that my old phone sounds better. I almost feel like asking for a refund at this point. I have also tried using a plain sound player such as google music that has no EQ on it, but I can still pick a slight distortion, the m7 doesn't sound as loud in this case but it just sounds much cleaner.
PS. Just for reference all my tracks are 320kbs and I listen to mostly Metal.
Thanks for your help!
Try lossless flac, you'll probably find the DAC up converting 320mp3's hightlights the defects

Turn off BoomSound/beats if you're really obsessed with audio. They absolutely destroy the balance to the point of it sounding like I'm listening with a beats headphone.
The 10 drives my cans better than any phone or tablet that I have/had. I listen to EVERYTHING and it handles every genre perfectly.

Eh, I know many say that it is better to leave the EQ alone, but that is hard to do for me because 1) I most have 320 mp3s and very flew Flacs, some are even at 192k and 128k but thats because I have a very old and extensive library. 2) I do love warm sound signatures XD.
By the way, I am listening right now to Talos principle - Sanctuary in flac and at 0:25 when there are all those low frecuencies it just sound a little distorted, I would say it sounds abnormally loud on my 10, and it sounds clear on my m7. Check out The Talos Principle OST - Sanctuary on youtube for reference, I am prevented from posting outside links due to my newb status.
I use Bose true sound earphones, they are just mid-range phones nothing too special, but they do sound better with my old phone. Could it be this earphones can't handle the 10's frequencies?

Just had a listen to Sanctuary on Spotify and it sounds very impressive to me.
I'm using Shure 535 and everything sounds crystal clear to me.
There are two settings when headphones are plugged in under the boomsound setting. One is the Dolby headphone effects setting, the other is the custom profile you set up with your headphones. Try turning off the Dolby headphones effects. My HTC 10 can drive headphones like no other HTC product I have owned in the past, and it sounds better to me with the Dolby effects turned off.
Dunno man.... mine sounds freaking amazing.
using a custom EQ (set up with the frequency thing) and I'm just using a cheap set of Skull Candy headphones I use mostly for gaming
@isnoc I think that did away with the distortion! disabling the dobly effects has a positive impact on sound reproduction, the music doesn't sound as loud. However, the m7s bass sounds a little cleaner. It could be matter of sound signatures at this point. Where I really hear the difference is in the song Machine Gunn Eddie by Nitro. The m7 seems to sound slightly better due to the cleaner bass. I was expecting a night and day difference between these 2 phones =_(
Out of curiosity what mods are you running on the m7? When I had mine (still looking for where I left it...) I had zeroinfinity's and some extra buildprop changes and a kernel that supported the audio changes lol. I don't them side by side to test, but in my car and my porta-pro's from the sound I remember the 10 sounds a lot better to me.

You mentioned using beats on your M7. The beats eq exaggerates the bass which is probably what you're hearing. Have you tried turning it off and hearing the difference?

Ok I just noticed that my phone distorts at higher volumes, namely anything on medium high or above, no matter the bit rate of the song. This is where bass and highs start to suffer. My m7 plays music beautifully with 0 distortion at all levels. Does anyone else here suffer from distortion problems with the 10? Do I have a faulty phone?
@joeyrushlow I never bothered rooting or isntalling a custom rom on my m7, never saw the need for it. All I use for sound is the included beats audio dsp and poweramp and plays everything beautifully with distortion of any kind.
@richii0207 The m7 without beats audio does sound very flat, it is true that the main characteristic of Beats is enhancing the bass, but it also increase the volume across the spectrum in a more subtle way, in any case I get no distortion and everything sounds crystal clear.
I wonder, other than the EQ setup on the 10, and the potential of the quality of the DAC, there might not actually be a significant difference between DACs. Subtle definitely. Discernable for sure. But a significant difference that the 10 has over past phones is the amplifier driving the headphones. Could you be overdriving your headphones on the 10, and not on the M7? There are many things to consider that I do not have the skill to properly discuss like impedance for example. Or it could be a slight difference in your EQ settings.
I can say this, comparing my M9 to my 10. The sound is very very similar to my ears (disappointing I know right?) with two exceptions. One, the 10's sound is more expansive, or I should say there is more separation, so I know that with better recordings the 10 will sound better than my M9. Two, the 10 has more power at volume. I don't want to say louder, but it is louder, but clearer as well, as the volume goes up. It has more juice than my M9 does. I could dig out my M7, but I expect a similar experience. I like my 10. Perhaps you could listen to one in a store, a live demo one, to see if your phone has an issue.
