[Q] Problem with rooting & installing ROM! - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have rooting problem with my HTC Desire. I tried couple of tutorials to root my Desire.
I cant give te link but one of the thread was:Root Your Phone With UnrEVOked!
The Root My Droid Ultimate Guide to Rooting With UnrEVOked) all of them were with unrevoked). It worked to that part when I rebooted and saw that in my apps list was that Superuser logo, but thats about it.
Because when I tryed to do backup (after reboot and hit - + power) it gives me an error:
clockworkmod recovery 2.5.0.7
E: Cant find MISC:
E: Cant mount CACHE:recovery/command
E: Cant find MISC
E: Cant mount CACHE:recovery/log
E: Cant find MISC
I did: Wipe Data / Factory Reset. Install zip from SD Card and then select Choose zip from SD Card (I tried to install update-oxygen-1.0.4-signed. zip): It gave me an error like:
asser failed: write_raw_image("/ tmp/boot.img","boot")
E:error in / sdcard/update-oxygen-1.0.4-signed. zip
(status 7)
Install aborted
All time when I reboot and do - and power then there flashes green text, and theres something no something or no boot or smth, it goes so fast that i cant even read it.
It seems like that it cant mount SD card ot something, but it can find files form there. Im out of ideas, I used XDA and google search, but nothing didnt help, I tried these rooting steps maybe 3 times but always were errors.
So I hope someone can help me or suggest what to do? (Sorry for my bad English)
Best regards

Did you partition your sd card?

No, should I? Theres wasnt anything written about partitioning sd card...

It is definitely said in the Oxygen ROM thread - if you want to use that ROM you need to have an ext partition on your SD card to make the a2sd script work.

Ok, but what about backup error?

If your phone is PVT4 S-ON, you should flash another clockworkmod (newer than 2.5.0.7) or make it S-OFF. I recall people had problem with 2.5.0.7 with S-ON.
If not, then still try to flash a new one (> 2.5.0.x) via unrEVOked.

Okay, I have understand now that I have PTV4-S-ON desire, and the main problem is that it cant use clockmond recovery, so should I use unrevoked (from file, i change recovery with amon-ra recovery) and then root again?
Or what should I do next?

I did and it worked, thanks.

Phone freeze after Partition by ROM Manager >

Hi,
I've just downloaded ROM Manager & tried to partition my SD card but failed.
What I did:
In Rom Manager,
1. Partition SD Card. It asked to install something. I chose OK.
2. Ext Size 512MB
3. Swap Size 0MB
OK
Then the screen went black with a sign /!\ & the little grean Android guy.
I waited for a long long time, nothing happened.
I hit the power button & it show the following:
(I could move up & down with volume button, but hitting the power button didn't help, so I had to pull out the battery. The phone starts ok...)

How do I get the A2SD+
How do I partition the SD card please?
Thanks,
D
My phone is running Froyo 2.2 OTA 2.10.405.2
& Rooted by Unrevoked 3.21.
The reason I rooted the phone mainly to get the apps to SD card.
There's a zip file called recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-bravo.zip in:
D:\clockworkmod\download\koush.tandtgaming.com\recoveries
Should I rename it to update.zip, then run Partition SD Card again?
How do I do that from here please?
Thanks,
D
Mate,
I had the same issue, I run "flash clockworkMod Recovery" the first option in Rom Manager, and then I ran the "Partition SD Card" option again, and everything worked ok.
Thanks

thewarchild,
it works. wow. Thanks a lot.
D
Same problem. I do not see my ROM backup and don't want to continue root till I have a copy. Any help?
Had the same issue but looks to be resolved no by following the steps. Can I ask what the swap file should be set to ? and how do I go about adding extra partitions that some of the new roms need ?

[Q] Rooted Desire stuck on htc logo after trying to make a partition.

I have a rooted desire and I was trying to partition the sd card and it rebooted and since then hasn't been able to pass the screen. I've tried to search for answers but here is some info
-I bought the phone unlocked and rooted so I don't have a gold card
-I tried pressing the back button and then power but the "reboot" option doesn't work
-I also tried "clear storage" to factory reset and it still doesn't load past that screen
-When I choose "recovery" sometimes it loads up my CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY page but I don't know what I can do from there.
Please help!
Thanks!
Reese
Ok if can enter recovery no problem, try wipe data in recovery and reboot, if that doesn't work, did u have an nand backup? Restore it, or dw the same or a new rom and install it threw recovery...
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
How can I put a new rom without a gold card? Can I just put it on my SD and instal that way?
I tried doing wipe and it didn't help and no I don't have a NANd backup
Gold card is only needed to install stock romĀ“s...
Look for a rom that u like, download the zip file to the SDcard, and install it threw recovery...
Thank you!
I'll try that out.
So I'll just need to name the new rom update.zip and then install through recovery?
I'll give that a try!
Yes u can rename it to update.zip or just choose install from sdcard and choose the zip file u want..
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
It worked!
Since you're so smart, do you know how to easily create an EXT on the SD card?
Thanks
Reese
Not that "smart" interested.. lol
U can find everything i told here in xda..
The easyest way to partition your sdcard is threw rom manager, download the app for free threw market, this is the easyest way to backup/Restore and install roms..

I tried doing it through the ROM manager already but all it does it reboot my system and then I get the android with a ! and when I click power it displays CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY and I see this:
ClockworkMod Recovery v.2.5.0.1
finding update package...
opening update package...
verifying update package..
E: failed to see in /cache/update.zip (invalid argument)
E:signature verification failed
installation aborted
It gives this to me everytime. Maybe something is wrong with Rom Manager?

weird,
never had problems with rom manager,
do u have sd adapter?
try and format the card threw windows/linux, format type FAT32, or if u have another phone like a nokia format the SDcard in that phone, had some problems with the SDcard, not recognized in Desire, format it with an Nokia, and then the SD is readble again in my Desire, then with RM, partitioned the card

Phone is f**ked! HELP!

Okay so i gave up half way in my attempt to get the data2sd and its seriously messed up my phone! I cant boot, and in recovery cant flash anything or mount anything as it says;
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)
This means i cant restore my nandroid or do anything!
Ive tried flashing an RUU without success!
Any ideas?
I can access recovery, but thats about it!
It says it can't mount your sdcard...try formatting it.
Backup your nand backups from it first.
Might be worth using a PB99IMG.zip from an RUU to go back to stock and then try again
Is your recovery a permanent flash(unrevoked) or a temporary flash? If its a permanent flash, turn off your phone. Take out your SD Card and format it in a computer(FAT32), then it should be able to mount it. Then flash a ROM, get unrevoked again and flash Amon Ra's recovery. In there partition your SD Card(Its the easiest method IMO) and install a ROM with data2SD(Or install d2sd yourself, its very easy).
ive tried a different sd card so i dont think its that, im gonna try the PB99IMG thing..... do i just but it on the sd card and it will run from bootloader?
Yep, put it on the root of the SD card and turn on into HBOOT and it'll find the file and ask if you want to continue
I flashed it but not i just get a boot loop, i can access recovery but i cant apply update zip, i get the same error message.
Any ideas?!
So the PB99IMG.zip flashed - you don't do it through recovery, obviously - and now you're on a boot loop or just stuck at the HTC screen?
yeah pretty much, thing im gonna give cos i have insurance and get a new one! Thanks though!

Looks like you can't mount your SDcard? Fix it with the fastboot command described there.
Good luck!

[Q] I can't load any ROM

Okay, my son has an HTC Desire 2.2 from 3 out of the box. I have put in a 16gb sdcard and made it a gold card. I have rooted it but when I try to load LeeDroid ROM on or any ROM for that matter I am unable to do so. It happens if I use either ROM Manager or from booting. I get the message that says
Clockwork Mod Recovery v2.5.0.7
E:Can't find MISC:
E:Can't mount CACHE:recovery/command
E:Can't find MISC:
E:Can't mount CACHE:recovery/log
E:Can't find MISC:
Any help appreciated. Easy step by step guide would be helpful.
I had the same issue, its rather simple how i got around it.
1. I went into rom manager
2. Selected "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"
3. It detected the phone as an HTC Desire
After this i was able to flash custom roms, i dont know why my phone did this, i couldnt believe that this solved my issue either but it did.
Hope this works for you!
Thanks
Thanks for the reply. If only it was that simple. I have tried that a few times and it didn't work for me. It says the recovery has been successful but it didn't fix the problem.
OK, well firstly what did you use to root the phone? Was it branded? hboot? radio?
Secondly are you trying to install roms with a2sd? In that case have you partitioned your sd card yet?
If all else fails it might be worth it to run a signed RUU to unroot back to stock (You might need a gold card, thats why i asked if your phone is branded) and from there start the process again ...
Thanks for the reply. I used unrevoked to root the phone using this link http://theunlockr.com/2010/09/20/how-to-root-the-htc-desire-unrevoked-method/
It was simple and I managed to do everything it said, including downloading the different drivers.
It is a branded phone with three.
I am trying to install LeeDroid with A2sd but I can't partition the sdcard either because of this problem.
I am looking into flashing an .img file and then trying again. What do you think?
You could install the amon ra recovery. Then you can partition easily. And you should flash a zip file for starters, not an img file
Ah, didn't see this last reply. I have installed amonRA recovery and it worked fine. I have now installed LeeDroid ROM and will partition the sdcard using ROM Manager.
Thanks for everyone's help.

[Q] Can anyone help me? Desire stuck in boot loop :(

Hi all
Got an issue that I just cant solve.
I have a desire, rooted, s-on. Was running leedroid 3.3.3, all was working well until couple of days ago when after a reboot all the content on the SD card seemed to disappear. Strange thing was, it could still be read when mounted.
So, after trying a few things I decided to reflash, so wiped cache, data and anything else I could do via recovery.
Copied the leedroid.zip file to my card, renamed update.zip but now when I try to apply it from recovery I get the below error:
E:failed to open /sdcard/update.zip (no such file or directory) E: signature verification failed. Installation aborted.
Cant work this out.. people have suggested that I disable verification checking in recovery.. but I dont see that option in the recovery menu I can access?
I wonder if anyone could help me as I am phone-less
many thanks
Assuming you are using clockworkmod recovery, this option should be in "Advanced".
Sent from dGB with Transparent XDA App
Hey!
When you're flashing a .zip rom use the "install zip from SD card" option, not "apply update .zip". The signature is different, so it wont work.
So just try and wipe cache, data, ext, system, dalvik and battery stats, and then install the zip from the sd without renaming it.
What recovery are you using? I suggest CWM for a clean experience.
Also i suggest to put your sd card in a computer and back-up the contents, than format it again in CWM. At lease fix the permissions.
Check the advanced menu for dalvik wipe, battery stats and fixing permissions.
I hope that helps. If not, write here and we will help you.
Cheers!
thanks for the replies.. i got it working late last night
the problem was that I didn't have the CWM recovery file update.zip on my card.. i had cleared everything and re partitioned the card, so the phone was blank and i only had the rom .zip file
so without the proper update.zip i was unable to get into recovery.
i could not find update.zip anywhere at all for download, but luckily i had an old copy in my dropbox from months ago that i was able to get on my card
then i was able to flash
so.. the lesson i learnt from this issue is always a keep a copy of update.zip
