Not exactly sure what you mean by this, but the question has been asked lots of times (just do a search on keyboard backlight) as many people complain about it. No great solution so far though unless you install a custom ROM (I know CM6 allows you to customize all of the backlight levels) or cover up your light sensor to keep it lit...
Alternatively, I think there they might be some apps on the market like Power Manager that keep the backlight on, but I have tried any since I use CM6...
ok thanks, i'm running virtuous but idk if its possible to customize it, ill check it out and search the market otherwise thx!
It would only turn off if there's lots of light. There's no timer.

not talking about a timer, just the sensitivity of the sensor regarding the lighting on keys.... it just goes of to quick imo....

Hi there,
Coming from a Blackberry Bold 9700 and being now the proud owner of a Samsung Galaxy S, I have to confess I miss a tiny little feature that I had with the BB and that the SGS doesn't have: when I used to put my BB in its case, it would lock the phone automatically.
Well, I know that is an old feature of all BB and that it works via a magnetic mechanism of some sort.
My question is: would it be possible to develop such a feature for the SGS, using the proximity sensor?
Or... is there any existing app that already does this?
FYI, I use this case: http://www.amazon.co.uk/GENUINE-KRU...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1284032013&sr=8-1
Thanks!
Benny
One small question: is this topic in the appropriate forum or should it be in the "Android Development" one?
This could really belong in any of the forums, it's about accessories, an application for locking the phone, and the development of such an application. Congrats, for what it's worth!
But...I don't think this is possible. I'm just another uneducated user though, so what do I know!
This looks cool :

Thanks for the info, Danesh!
That tool seems to be quite perfect for the job. But I'm afraid it does not work with my (and, I assume, any) SGS...
Can someone take a look at it and see if it can be modded in order for it to work?
Thanks a bunch!

Oh, ok... But that kind of defeats the purpose I intended to use it for.
Sorry to be such a pain, but is there someone who can enable the sensor to do its job even with no headphones plugged in?
Thanks again!

Im currently creating such an app. Heres wht imma implement :
Using orientation sensor + proximity sensor, if ur phone is in vertical position and proximity sensor returns a 0 for 5s, then the screen turns off (haven't implemented this part yet).
So far i have it working where it sets the brightness to 0 when its dark for 5s, and sets to original brightness when its not dark. Will keep u posted.
Edit : I might not do orientation sensing, cuz tht'll cause too many variations where its not fathomable.
Neone know of any private api's or nething tht allows an app to disable screen ? Might open tht guys app to see.

hi there.
first of all i think u dont need something like that .. i was a bb user too.. and trust me u dont need.. sgs touch screen only respond to finger.. u can try pen.. or try touching it with your clothes or trew your clothes the screen and see that nothing hapens GL.. so why is necesary the magnetic lock? i dont see the point
I suppose you could set something like this up with Tasker? Using the orientation sensor?
The screen auto brightness has always bothered me. I love the convenience of using it but it simply doesn't work like I believe it should.
For example. At night while laying in bed in a completely dark room I'd expect the screen to dim to it's lowest setting. When in actuality it does not, and it always seems to bright. On the other hand when I'm outside in direct sunlight I'd like for the brightness to be at 100%. Again this doesn't appear to be the case.
So what's the issue here? Is there a dev out there who has found a better solution?
I agree with you on this one. The automatic brightness on the EVO is just silly. Its lowest is 25%, by the way. There should be a way to choose what you want the minimum/maximum brightness to be :\
I've seen this question before, some time ago, but still no solution. I've seen someone say use total screen control trial (free in market) and tweak the filter settings to essentially do the dimming value you want.

I have been searching and searching for an answer to this. I don't want to have to use third party programs if I could just change the thresholds myself.
In Calkulins rom he says he lowered the maximum auto brightness to save on battery, and this question has been asked there, with no answer (except for the usual "just use this program to do it").
Someone has to know where the settings for this are. I'm getting more advanced at dealing with apk's, jars, etc... But I haven't been able to find which one controls this. Build.prop has some brightness settings in it, but it's just the default setting when not using auto-brightness (I think).
Anybody ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
I know it's possible, because Cyanogenmod has the option to tweak the levels in CM Settings.
I just know I've seen an app here on xda, but don't remember what it was.

I know it must be here too but but searching comes up with nothing new. I've tried autobrightness, auto-brightness, with min and max levels, thresholds, custom settings and every other search I could think of.
Maybe I'm leaving out the one keyword that would finnd it... lol

Thanks for looking, but unfortunately I've been there already. It basically allows you to toggle between auto brightness and a variety of static levels, but doesn't affect the min and max of auto brightness when you are in that mode.
I'm trying to be able to leave the phone in auto brightness mode all the time and just have the screen get to it's max available brightness when I'm in a bright area, and minimum available brightness in a dark area.

I did a quick search too, but I couldn't come up with what I saw before. I remember thinking "neat, but I don't need that because it's built into the Rom". It's driving me nuts now too :/
You could always contact one of the devs from CM & find out what files need to be edited.
Basically it sucks. It actually drives to crazy so I just don't use it anymore. When I am on tapa I put the background to black so it's a bit easier on the eyes when I am laying in bed going through the forums before sleep
Hello,

I'm assuming you do not have auto-brightness enabled? Because it won't know that its dark enough to need the keyboard lights... if you don't want to have full auto-brightness or you want to control it i would flash andromadus cause they have a really good customization for the auto-brightness levels : cyanogen mod style
owwh yeah you're right! thanks a lot!!
But there is no way to activate keyboard's light whitout auto brightness?

Currently...no. This seems like a temporary fix since the devs are working on more important things, i.e Camera... Once they work that out they will probably move on to the "facelifts".
I know there isn't much of a point to me saying this - but be sure to post questions in the Q&A forum!
I think it is just on Virtuous Beta Rom, on Andromadus, it seems to work
Sorry for created the topic in the wrong section
Indeed I'm on Virtuous Beta Rom.
There is a free app called "Backlight off" that help to force the light of hw keyboard on!
It's only for rooted phone and I have tried this on the various beta of ICS for Desire Z and sometime it worked...
Sorry if there aren't link for download but are still not enabled!
I hope someone can help me out with this (I guess most of my posts arent worth bothering with as they usually go untouched by anyone). I'm trying to figure out a way to disable the touch button backlight on a Google Edition ROM. I have been searching for an answer since the Google Edition hit. All I can ever find is how to disable on GSIII ROMs (non ge). If anyone can please help me out I would very much appreciate it. Thanks!

Screen Filter is an app that can disable the backlight of the softkeys. Set it to auto-start at boot and you should be good. I know its not a direct fix but its a low impact app that shouldnt effect battery life or operation.

Seems to work for me. Did it dim the screen at all (thats its main function)? Did you see the check box "enable softkey back light" (uncheck it) at the bottom of the app ui?

Yes, it did dim the screen, but if i uncheck the enable softkey back light, anytime I touch the screen the backlights still come on. Are you on a G.E. rom? I am currently on Infamouse G.E.

No im not. I am on AOSP (Slim Bean) though.
There are options to do this in AOKP and CM roms. Anybody know how those builds pull it off?
Give me a minute to shower and I'll write you an app. All you have to do is install my app, reboot, grant it root access, and profit.

Okay i am having troubles setting it to off on boot. But here is a "toggle" version of it where you can toggle them on or off. Will try and fix the boot issue tomorrow.
SWEEET!!! Works like a charm thanks dude! Like I said, I've been searching for this forever! I know that many others have been searching for this, perhaps you should make a thread in the mods section.

Hi there,
is there a way to use the Menu and Back button on the bottom of the phone as a notification LED? Just let it blink if there is a notification in the system?
Greetings
Christian
I have tried several apps (BBS Notifications, ButtonLED) to accomplish this, unfortunately without any success.
The BBS Notification was able to control the button lights, however when the screen is off the lights do not work. Some phones do not allow the lights to go on, when the screen is off and as it seems S4 Mini is one of them. I also hope someone will find a solution for this, preferably one that will not cause too much battery drain.
Another option might be BLN mod. However, I read that the BLN modification in kernel might cause battery drain exactly because of the necessary changes in power management in order to allow the button light to work when the screen is off (the BLN mod for Mini does not exist yet as far as I know).
Sent from my GT-I9195 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
hello
I think the BLN kernel solution is better than any noLED app or other.
So I am very interested in a BLN supporting kernel.
Were can a user as me ask for this or can see the progress in building such a BLN-supporting kernel?
Thanks
Tom
You can try noled it uses your screen led for notification but drains battery
Sent from my GT-I8190 using xda app-developers app
As I wrote I this the BLN is much more better.
If you look at night on your superAMOLED screen while a noLED sign is there, the whole screen is lighter.
As far as I see this app (noLED) is not able to let our wonderful AMOLED screen totaly black but gives a little light on the whole screen.
So: were can a "new" user as me, with 2 years CM experiance at his Galasy S I can ask developers to create a BLN supportet kernel?
I dont want to post it in the wrong place here in XDAdev.
thanks !
Tom

I remembered to see the backlight somewhere on a todo list, but now can't find it. Is this now available in the stable release?
no it isn't. Still on the list.
Anything new yet? My girlfriend uses se S4 mini and is annoyed of the missing LED. NoLED drains too much battery...

So what do these links tell me. After reading them I am not sure what to do with it? Can I just add that to my Cyanogen or is it different?
What happens with Cyanogen Updates then?
