You know, something other than just the little flashing icon in the status bar? Would love to know what kinda signal strength I have, or maybe see what's going on when it just loops through disconnect after disconnect...seems like a pretty simple app but none of the stuff I can find that shows what I want supports 4G so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. For a Sprint Epic 4G of course
Gonna bump this up...been using ROM's based off EB13 and have settled on ACS Frozen, and it's made everything just about perfect except for this 4G signal strength request...is there really nothing like it?
Recently got a Sprint OverDrive device and it shows 4G signal strenth, so I know at some level it's possible...any help on this would be greatly appreciated!!!
Maybe you will have more luck is you ask over in the evo 4g forums?

Hey All,
I saw a guide on here that was used to change the minimum connection settings for the 4G. It was supposed to give you a better signal.
I searched and couldn't find it anywhere, can someone point to it.
Also have any of you used this and did it help? FYI I am on the absolute 4G border and can get 1 bar in half my house and none in the other half. I am hoping to help it out a little.
Thanks all,
Force
It's in the general section

It did help just a little. It basically gave me 4G in some spots where I wasn't getting it before. No real speed increase though, for me anyways.
You guys are awesome, thanks, I am just looking to get it in the other half of the house, so this should be perfect. Thanks again

So im getting my 4g touch today but have issue with sprint data signal around my area. Im in AIT training and need my phone tether without costing and without getting caught. Also is there any way to strengthen the data signal. I see 3g x1 but no clue what that means and last whats the best rom for what i listed for. Appreciate anyone that helps and much appreciation.
The 3g and 1x just means you are either A) in an area that you are getting full 3G coverage. B) 1x means the speed of your service has dropped to below that of what 3G is "supposed" to be so things like internet and the like are going to perform slower. Not sure about the tether as I do not use it sorry :/
for tether hop on a custom rom. I believe most if them here have a hotspot hack. try calkulins 2.9.1 or blu kuban 2.0. I have had best results with those. welcome buddy. happy flashing. remember to NOT use rom manager and to read around beforehand so you don't own a brick.
Why not

I've used Rom Manager for quite some time.. never had an issue. Also, soft bricking is a worry.. but not life threatening for your device. It's more of an annoyance. Also, if you are using an Samsung Epic 4g Touch.. MAKE SURE YOU SEARCH SAMSUNG EPIC 4G TOUCH. The Galaxy S2 on here is not your phone.
Happy Flashing to you sir..
P.S. I recommend Changing your PRL to 11115 and getting Roam Control.. So far it is the best combo that I've found.
If you don't know how to change your PRL... there are many threads devoted to such a task. Good Luck
So recently I've noticed that my 4g connection is dropping down to 3g a whole bunch when I'm in an area with very good coverage of 4g. I don't know of any issues related to this on any post I've searched for online so far. There might be one but haven't found it yet though. If anyone can give me some advice to this issue id appreciate it cause I'd love to utilize my phone as much as possible.
I had the Evo 4g for about 1.5 years and it was a great phone. It started having problems so I decided to upgrade to the Samsung S2 on Sprint. Ever since I got it I have low signal most everywhere, can't connect to 4g unless I'm out under open sky, and my phone flips to roaming a lot. I have updated everything but still no fix. I'm rooted but on stock ATM. Please I need some suggestions for fixing this with tweaks or a better rom. Specs below.

EL29
All I can suggest is try all the modems,at most I get 4 bars,4g cuts out alot for me

Ignore the low signal stuff. Our phone is just really accurate. Nothing wrong with our radios. You'll still be fine if its low signal usually

A lot of times when I am roaming or have really low bars I can't make or receive calls at all. I seem to remember having similar problems with a Samsung device on T-Mobile. Is the hardware side of Samsung's weaker than HTC? If it was just low signal but I could still use the device as a phone I wouldn't care, but it is just an expensive toy a decent portion of my day as it is right now.
Try clearing your nvram and reactivating.

Yeah I ignore my signal bar as well.. Even when it's low, my calls data sms are just fine.. But then again I'm in a area where sprint works great

How do you clear your nvram?
Part of my point in all this is that I am in an area that has good Sprint coverage, the only difference between my usage is the phone. I was consistently on 4G with my Evo now I very rarely can connect or stay connected, I always had cell service on my Evo, now lots of dropped calls and static and unable to send/recieve texts unless under open sky.

Your best bet might be to try a bunch of different modems. [modems here = radios on other devices like HTC]
You'll have to root and add CWM to flash them. Modems are build 'independant'. Meaing you could be on EL29 and use an FG20 modem if you'd like. By far the best reception (both 3g an 4g) has been on the FG20.
If you want to keep your phone on EL29 stock use sfhub's 'Autoroot' and add EL29+CWM-Rogue. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
Hit up the 'Modem repository by rwilco12 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662295
After each modem flash I suggest updating the PRL and Profile too.
Find one that gives you the best signal for your area.
There are also '3g/4g speed tweak' posts in this forum That will work on GB and ICS builds.
Good luck.

You would think they would've mellowed this out of the all the phones by now, but you may be experiencing the infamous Loss of Service (LOS) issue this phone wrought when it was first released.

You can either use odin or a dialer code + your MSL.
There are new PRL out and I get a better signal now and better 3g speeds. Update prl and profile first. Next try different modems, I like FE22
Thank you everyone. I just updated the PRL and Profile again. I'll see if that makes any difference and if not I will start running through the modems. If I find something that works I'll post back.
Hey folks,
Just a quick question I was hoping to get some clarification on:
Like many, I got the 4.2.2 OTA on Tuesday evening and everything went fine with the download and install. That being said, I'm having some signal issues that are a bit strange. For the most part the signal quality is fine. Not really having any connection issues, but I've noticed lower bars being shown overall. After doing some digging though I've determined that apparently 4.2.2 reports signal quality differently than 4.1.1 did... representing a much truer value based on dBm and not overly inflating things for constant 3-4 bars. Essentially it's like I remember way back with 4.0.2. I still find it a little odd that I can show -85dBm and only have 1 bar, but if that's how things are reported in 4.2.2 then so be it.
The thing that's bothering me though is this: at times my signal will read 0dBm 99asu. I'll have zero bars showing, but it will still show 4g in the notification bar and will say connected to the network in status. I can make calls, text, surf the web, download apps, even run speed tests without any problem (although not great numbers, they're not horrific either) Eventually bars and dBm "come back", but the amount of time for that to happen varies. Again, nothing seems to be affected by this, but it's just a little disconcerting to have happen.
So, has anyone else experienced this? Google searches show some talk of it but otherwise haven't turned up much. I've done a battery/SIM pull and that didn't change things. Is it possible something may have gone a bit sideways in the ota download? Was thinking a factory reset may help too but not looking forward to wiping my device only to find out this is pretty normal.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
It's possible that the OTA updated the baseband, please look into that as I'm not entirely sure. If that's the case, then it might just be that the new baseband is not suitable for your coverage area in which case I'd suggest you flash a previous release.

Thanks for the reply. I'll fully admit I'm not as up to snuff on this as others, so please correct me if I'm wrong... but the 4.2.2 OTA did in fact contain new radios from VZW, so shouldn't the baseband have been updated for everyone who took it?
Mine is: I515.10 V.FK01/I515.FK02
As I understand it that breaks down to phone model (I515), HW rev 10, with the new radios being FK01/FK02
Wouldn't every VZW GNex that was on the 4.2.2 OTA have the same baseband; outside of having either HW rev 9 or 10?
Currently I'm locked, stock, not rooted... yeah, probably one of the last Thinking I may unlock and root and try the 4.1.1 radios again. Do I need TWRP or CWM to flash those or can that be done if I keep stock recovery?
As always thanks for all input, much appreciated.
My Gnexus is the same . but despite that it actually performs better oddly enough
Do/can you update roaming (*228) with the Verizon nexus? Or is that just something I could do with my old fascinate (yes, a fascinate and then nexus... I am a glutton for VZW punishment).

You can, but as far as I know you'll then have what is considered a 3G PRL pushed to your phone, something beginning with "5"... if you just let the PRL update and push on it's own like it's supposed to you'll have a 4g PRL, and will begin with a "1" Both work the same and pick up both 3G/4G signals...not sure what the true difference is honestly. I've been on 15192 for ages now and it's been fine up to this point... Think I'd just as soon keep it. Thanks for the suggestion though.
I Read some where online. That if you take out the Sim card let it for like a minute or so. Slap it back in and there you go. It work for me

Yeah, did that... battery pull and sim card pull... left it out for 30 min then back in... no difference. Like I said, it's not that I'm having a huge problem with my data connection, it's just acting... strange... kind of all over the place. Lots of fluxuation, odd readings/bar equivalents, and the whole 0dbm 99asu thing with still being connected. However I've also now started seeing higher than normal "time without signal" percentages... Just flakey. And frustrating... no issues at all until the 4.2.2 ota.
mine is not really a problem but I had way more bars of coverage in a multitude of places (work, home, gym, etc) on the old radios. I havent looked at the dbm's but visually it's different. might be something for someone interested to look into.
btw, im in fresno, ca.

Well Google changed how the signal is read visually through the bars to provide a more accurate reading. You should look at dbm

Having the same experience here (Whidbey Island, Washington) where the 4g signal clings on until it absolutely had to fall back to 3g. New radios may be contributing, but the change in coding to report lower signals may have improved the ability to hang on to a 4g signal. Hand off seems pretty slick too, but that's likely a function of the new radios that came in the OTA.
