[Q] Trying to Download custom ROM - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been trying to down load a custom ROM on my EVO and now it wont go past the hteEVO 4G screen. Can anyone help me out?

You need to provide more information than that. For starters, what is the link to the rom your trying to flash.

I am sorry but i Dont know the link that i tryied to down. But maybe you could help me try to reflash something else. anything to get my phone back up and running. Maybe i missed a step and nad didnt do something. I can get back into recovery mode but the phone just wont reboot all the way. Thanks

If you can still get back to recovery then you can flash another ROM, or restore the nandroid that you *should* have made before trying to flash the last one.
Pick a ROM you want, download it, put it on your SD card, flash from recovery. Easy as pie.

don't panic take a deep breath as long as you can get into your recovery you are fine...Just download whatever rom you want and store in on ur sd card and flash it and your are golden...just out of curiosity what recovery are you using?

have you tried restoring the backup you made first before you started trying to flash a custom rom?

Did you try to do a full wipe first before attempting to flash the new ROM?

As long as everything went well, you are fine. Just flash your custom rom of choice, I used Flipz.
If you need to revert to stock you can flash a rooted stock ROM from the wiki or you can just RUU if you want to undo the root.
the ruu from the original toast post for rooting? if i did that would it be the same way as the first part of the guide or second. basically so i could start over from a new phone basically. or can u suggest another route to get it back to fresh out the box? any input is appreciated. thanks

No, flash any custom ROM from recovery or pick one of the "stock with root" ROMs. You should try out the Flipz or Damage ROM in my opinion.
To get to recovery from your console type
Code:
adb reboot recovery
Otherwise, make sure you don't have any of the auto flashing image files on the root of your sdcard, then turn off the phone, turn on the phone while holding power down, wait a sec, arrow down to recovery, in recovery wipe data and davik, then flash from .zip, select the ROM .zip you download and let it run.
All custom ROMs are located here >> http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC Evo ROMs
As long as you are rooted and can boot your phone you could install ROM Manager from Market. The free version will allow you to download the Flipz or Damage ROM, then it will give you the option of installing for you. Be sure to select to wipe before the install.
You will be up and running a brand spanking new custom ROM after ROM Manager has its way with your phone.
sounds good yeah just getting use to this device, coming from a nexus

Roms wont flash on Clockwork recovery

ok i have a MAJOR problem. im kind of a noob at this stuff so im still learning. i was messing in my system files trying different phone.apk. i think i may have deleted something essential. when i turn my phone on it doesnt get past the boot animation. my phone was rooted with unrevoked 3. but everytime i try to install a new rom using clock work recovery, it gets to the part where it "opens update pakage" and just stops and goes back to the first menu screen of clockwork. i dont have a nandroid backup either so i cant even restore.
Did you wipe everything before flashing?
Which rom did you try flashing?
yes i wiped everything. i tried multiple roms like cm 6, and stock. none worked. also. everytime i try to load up the pc36img.zip nothing happens it says "no image or wrong image"
You should try using Amon_RA instead. Just flash it using ROM Manager. Good Luck.
is it possible for me to change to amon? im not able to get past my boot screen on my phone, so if it requires me to turn my phone completely to use it, then i cant. i dont really know much about amon.
Search for the Amon_RA thread. If you downgraded your HBOOT, you can flash from Fastboot. If not, you can try an RUU.

. I'm using ROM Manager with ClockworkMod, and every attempt leads to the screen flashing code for a few moments, and going right into the ClockworkMod Recovery main menu. it wont let me flash ANYTHING period. I have HBOOT-0.97. i dont know what can be the problem. and Amon RA is too complicated for me to understand right now cuz im still a noob. :-(

Is this a problem or is it not a problem? Rooting.

I don't want to make this long so here goes. I don't have a clue what happened but it some how worked.
I just wanted to root my phone so I went to this site and followed the instructions to the key.
http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-hacks/how-to-root-htc-evo-4g-new/
I had problems with step 10 and I dont even know if i properly saved the wimax what ever the hell that is/
When the bootloader came up it would just load from the sdcard and load up the " PC36IMG.zip" and and update.
I was never able to do step 11.
I kept going back and forth trying to repeat the step and that z4 app would never let me unroot and i repeatedly rerooted.
So I decided to reset my phone and sdcard hoping this would reset the whole process.
I then found something else to root. This website.
http://theunlockr.com/2010/07/20/how-to-root-the-htc-evo-4g-unrevoked-method/
Unfortunatley I didn't follow the instructons right because I am a damn fool.
So I went to straight running the unrevoked app without running the modified Android USB driver. Wierd thing is that I already got that superuser ninja looking guy in my apps. I was able to use wifi tether.
Now here is the thing, I was never able to do that recovery thing with that little black screen with green letters. It seems that I skipped that step to recover something. How can I redo that?
When I went to ROM manager and tried to install a ROM it says "flashing an update package on a recovery other than clockworkmod recovery may not work properly. Proceed?"
Does that mean it won't work? Im afraid to push Proceed.
Hope I made sense for someone to help. Its a giant mess... I wish I could start all over...
Boot into the bootloader and accept the update and reboot, that'll install a recovery for you.
Also, you're using the paid version?

Dude I love you. What about when loading the ROM from ROM manager, "flashing an update package on a recovery other than clockworkmod recovery may not work properly. Proceed?"
What is clockworkmod recovery, what does it do, where do I get it?
Oh and yes i am using the paid version, why should I get my 5 bucks back?

Clockwork recovery is just different from amon_ra. You can go into rom manager and click flash clockwork recovery, if you wish. And that message means like flashiing clockwork on amon_ra , you may get errors. Also, you can use clockwork on amon_ra, as to still download roms, but you can't backup with it.
I also want to add ever since I tried the root, it took my phone back to the stone age. I los the newest htc update with swype. Why is that?
The Rom Mananger isnt working for me either. It wont load any ROMS. IT says downloading but nothing ever happens, how long does it take to download a ROM?
I downloaded this OTA SUPERSONIC 3.70 and it wont load either? Whats going on .
I really need some major help!

I'm not sure why you would root your EVO without knowing anything about the process or at the very least the terminology, but it's not too late. I recommended that you go and read and get a better feel for the process.
There are at least a dozen threads on the subject. Here's one to start you off Helpful Threads.

New Gingerbread Update Question

Okay, Please don't say, "USE THE SEARCH" because i have.. and i've read through countless and countless number's of pointless posts and i'm still really confused..
I am currently rooted and running stock rom with nerarchy's kernal
I want to update to the new gingerbread that was released, but i do not want to lose my root, i know the thread in the android development is just the regular OTA copy of the gingerbread update and that i will lose my root if i use that, but i'm sure by now someone has rooted the update, so can someone point me to the link of the new ROOTED gingerbread update?
Also i see there is a new radio and kernal .. so can someone give me complete instructions on how to fully install the new rooted update, and how to flash the radios/kernals after i flash the new gingerbread rom?
Do i just boot into my clockwork recovery (or do i need to use amron ra?) and then flash zip from sd and then flash the rooted gingerbread update like i would any other rom? Then after i flash that, just flash the radio the exact same way as i flashed the update? do i need to do a full wipe or just the delvik and regular cache? And also the kernal, do i need to flash that seperately or does that get included when i flash the .zip of the gingerbread stock rom?
I'm really confused as you can see, so if anyone could give me full step by step directions for finding, downloading and fully installing from start to finish everything that i need to download and flash and how to do it CORRECTLY i would be greatly appreciative..
Please note that i AM currently rooted and running a custom kernal, and i have previously flashed MIUI and MYN'S rom Before so i DO know how to flash things.
Thank you in advance to whoever finds the time to help me!
Basically just need pointed to all the correct Rooted downloads,
OK, the ROM, is simple. Download it, put it on your SD Card, reboot to recovery, wipe everything, and flash it, then let it reboot and you're good.
I use Amon Ra, so I'm not familiar with Clockwork, but I think the wipe process is not as complete with that recovery, so you MAY want to search for Calkukin's Wipe All.
The RADIOS, are not much different, and again I'm coming from Amon Ra, but in the Dev section, near the middle of the page ,look for the Calkukin's Thread for updated radios, wimax, PRI, etc and d/l the combo zip.
Put that on your SDCard, reboot to recovery, no need to wipe, and flash it.
I prefer to use a flashable zip file over a pc36img.zip for radios.
HERE IS THE IMPORTANT PART!!!!
When it flashes, it will ask you to reboot pretty quickly, do that, and it will go to a black screen wit ha green circle/arrow and sit there for a few minutes.
Do not touch it. Do not pull the battery, do nothing.
Then it will reboot back to recovery. When you get the menu option to reboot your phone, after it formats cache, reboot, and it will take an few extra minutes to boot up, but then you're good.
Possibly clockwork mod may be slightly different, but in a nutshell, that's it.
You didn't post any links to where i can download the new ROOTED version of the OTA gingerbread update that came out on June 4th
I need a link to the ROOTED gingerbread stock ROM
and a link to the new Kernals and Radios..
and you're saying to just flash the updated rom like any other rom? full wipe then flash... and after i flash the rom, not to reboot, but to immediately flash the kernal and then the radio also ?
and after i flash the radio last, wait for it to finish and it will take me back to recovery after a few minutes, and then to reboot?

Then reboot to Recovery and flash the radios, as I described above:

what do u mean 'then reboot to system' ?

after you install the rom, select the option "reboot now." after that you will need to boot back into recovery mode and flash the kernel and reboot again. then go into hboot and flash your radios. make sure the radio zip is named PC36IMG so that your phone will auto detect the file and install it.

Okay so i do a full wipe, then flash the rom .. once the rom finishes the flash, i reboot and let the phone fully boot up into the rom (so that the phone is on and functional) after the phone is fully booted up and running normally i turn the phone back off and reboot into recovery.. I then flash the radio and wait a few minutes for it to finish and reboot again.. correct? did i miss anything here? because i'm going to follow what i just said verbatim, so if anythere there is wrong or missing a step please let me know..
Do i need to flash a kernal at any point? or just the rom and radio?
The rom has the kernel with it after you reboot after you flashed tge rom just flash the combo and you should be good to go. If you want to flash a new kernel make sure you have a compatible gingerbread one.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
You are correct on everything you posted.
Just remember the radios part is crucial you do not pull the battery.
When you flash it, it will tell you to use the menu to reboot. So reboot, and it will go to a black screen wit ha green circle with an arrow in it. This will sit there for a few minutes. Don't worry about how long, because this is the critical point. Just let it sit, then it will reboot and go back to recovery.
It will say formatting cache...
When the menu pops up that you can use to reboot the phone, do that. Reboot to system and it will take a little longer than normal to boot up, because your caches were formatted.
IF something goes wrong, and it won't but just in case, don't do anything before coming here and reporting what is happening.
I'm not trying to sound overly dramatic, but this is where people make mistakes.
I've flashed radios several times no problem, as have many of us.
Remember patience is key!
that's correct. your decision on the kernel and radio.

bump, before i flash this can someone verify this for me?
Here is my understanding in steps
1.) Boot into recovery and do a FULL wipe
2.) Select option to flash zip from sd card
3.) flash the gingerbread-update-rom.zip
4.) After flash finishes reboot and fully run the rom
5.) reboot into recovery again
6.) select option to flash zip from sd card
7.) flash the radio.zip
8.)it takes a few minutes and takes u to a weird screen but just dont touch it and it will finish
9.) reboot
10.) Enjoy a ROOTED gingerbread stock rom ?
and I DO NOT need to flash a kernal at any point correct? it's just included in the ROM?

wow im really impressed theres no flaming here haha.. yeah that about it.. on a side note you really should make a backup before you do this....
You said "Wow i'm really suprised theres no flaming here"
Yet i dont understand why there would be flaming?
Why would someone talk **** and flame me because i'm trying to learn and be 100% completely sure of what i'm doing before i attempt to flash something to my very very expensive phone?
At least i'm taking steps to go above and beyond rather than just half-reading something and thinking i'm smarter than everyone else and bricking my phone for good.
If someone is seriously trying to learn and feel safe and secure in what they're doing why would someone flame them?
Just my opinion... The only time someone should be flamed is when they are given links to pages where they can find their answers and they just want someone to flat out walk them through it and hold their hand rather than search and find the answers themselves...
There's no flaming here because he wasn't asking the typical overly repeated questions.
And when it comes to flashing a new radio, knowing that bad things can happen, it's important that a first timer know everything involved. The steps, the issues that can occur, etc.

For gingerbread-update-rom.zip I would use: supersonic_4.22.651.2_deodexed_060511-signed-.zip
For radio.zip I would use EVO_Radio_2.15.00.05.02_WiMAX_27243_PRI_2.15_003

Samsung GS3 (d2att) not booting but have TWRP Recovery available

Hello all-
I was just recently running CM 10.2 RC1 but had to do an install of the correct gapps as it was randomly rebooting. Well the device now is stuck on the Samsung Galaxy S3 screen with the BLUE cyanogen. I have access to TWRP and am able to reflash the .zip file for CM 10.2 RC1 yet it still won't boot? I did the wipe of dalvik, cache, data and system but still no luck? The device is NOT recognized in Odin. I just want to get the phone up and running again, even if it means root is lost.
Please help!!

Get a sd card>download a new rom and put the rom in the sd card and flash like a normal ROM
http://fs1.d-h.st/download/00023/E5R/I747UCDLK3_I747ATTDLK3_I747UCDLK3_HOME.tar.md5 You can download that file and put it in the PDA section once you run Odin and run it from there. This will put your phone back to the Stock Rom 4.1.1 and you can restart from there if you want.

No, with the file I told you to download you do not need to have a SD card because you can't boot into the rom you have Windows will not recognize the phone like normal to drag and drop to it. So with this file you can save it to your computer, Open Odin, put your phone into Download Mode, plug it into the computer so that Odin detects it. Then Click PDA and browse to the file you downloaded and tell it to use that file and then Run the process and it will install the original rom onto your phone.

Can you get into recovery mode by any chance? If you can do that then it should be possible to do a factory reset from within Recovery Mode and possibly get you past the boot screen. If that doesn't help let me know and I will see what else I can find out for you. Also what all did you have checked and unchecked when you Ran Odin to reinstall the Stock Rom? If you had any of them other than Auto-Reboot on that may also have caused a problem http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1722686 here is a forum that will show you how to use Odin. I apologize for not remembering about telling you what to check and uncheck. But try recovery mode first and do a factory reset and if that does not work, redo the odin install this time only having Auto-Reboot checked.

But try recovery mode first and do a factory reset and if that does not work, redo the odin install this time only having Auto-Reboot checked.

Thanks man! I went back into Recovery and did a factory reset/wipe data and it finally got past that screen. Thanks again for your guidance and help. Any ideas as to what could have possibly caused the issue in the first place? I do want to re-root the device again and I am assuming my best bet is to flash a Stock ROM like you referenced with ROOT injected? What order should I follow, flashing a Stock w/Root injected...and then the Recovery of choice? Or vice-versa? What do you recommend?
Again, your timely responses were greatly appreciated. Was really worried I would have to take it to ATT.

It could have been several things that could cause the ROM to do that. I recommend that you make sure that your Bootloader is up to date and then go from there. Download the newest CWM, do a backup of your current rom so that you can flash back to it if you phone messes up. Then when you try to install a new ROM make sure you Wipe: Data then Cache, then Dalvik Cache in Advanced then Format /System. Then from there Install the new Rom, then install the correct GApps, then wipe Cache and Dalvik cache then Reboot into System. It takes messing up a few times to get it right but as long as you follow the guides pretty close and keep a good backup that you know works or keep the knowledge of how to Inject the Stock Rom to your phone when it messes up you shouldn't have much to worry about.

Sounds good. Thanks for the info. Obviously the device is not currently rooted or did the Factory Rom file you gave me have root injected? Do you have a recommended way of achieving Root with the Samsung SG3? Just installing a custom Recovery won't achieve Root, correct?
Thanks!

BTW, how can I confirm I have the most recent bootloader version? It looks like my phone's current baseband version is i747UCDLK3. I did download the boot_CWM_i747UCDMG2.zip file and put it on the internal storage. Do I just want to flash that file to update my bootloader?
Thanks again!

Yea that is the newest baseband and yea you just flash it. As far as rooting the phone and everything I recommend this forum. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1725839 It has just about everything you could need to know!

Thanks for the information. The phone that has been all screwed up and the reason I posted a thread in the first place is my gf's GS3. I have her's rooted again and running. I am going to update her baseband version and then install a custom ROM so she's up to 4.3.1. As far as mine goes, I have been fine. I myself also still have the outdated bootloader version. Is it ok to just flash that update for the bootloader without it doing anything wrong? I'm asking this since I'm rooted and running a custom ROM with no current problems. In other words, I don't want to end up saying "it wasn't broke, why did I mess with it" ? I did bookmark that thread you referenced in your last message. Damn that thread is LOADED with just about everything one would possibly need to know about Android and making it their own.
So my g/f accepted the OTA update today (not knowing obviously) and she got updated to 4.3 via AT&T, unfortunately!! I attempted to flash the latest Liquid Smooth ROM and I continue to get a FAILED message during installation. It mentions a bunch of bootloader numbers ( I am assuming the only ones this ROM is compatible with?) So is there any way to roll the bootloader back to a compatible one or just go a different route for the custom ROM?
Also, I attempted flashing the file to update my baseband yet when I so into the device, it doesn't show as having the updated version? Is there a different way of doing it or maybe a different file?
I'm not to sure about the troubles that may come about since your gf went with the 4.3 OTA but If I am not mistaken it will need to be downgraded before you try doing anything else to it and if it is not showing that you updated your bootloader on your phone I recommend grabbing the App called Root Checker to double check then look for another file, tho unless it failed it should have updated it or messed up your phone one.
