[Q] <running ubuntu on Desire z> loop kennel? s off? help please - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok first off i respect moderators and if i violated the rules of posting, i am sincerely sorry
lets get to the main topic
---------------prologue---------------------------------
basically I am learning linux commands at school now and it is quite... fun...(lol)
so I want to use ubuntu on my phone to
<run vim and gcc some scripts>
<play around like making batch files>
I have tried ARM ubuntu on wm phone with haret (project rhobuntu) so i searched for any guide to run on my new device , desire z.
So far there was one thread in xda concerning desire z about running ubuntu and it was just like asking possibility not a guide.
---------------------------------------------------------
Apparently a guide in nexus 1 hacks is universal for all android devices and since desirez has decent cpu (2nd generation snapdragon) I decided to try it.
And I failed cannot find directory cannot run this device busy bla bla bla
So, I found that there are two reasons of my failure
-loop kennel
-loop 5 instead of loop 1 in the script (tried and does not work)
So, the conclusion is i need to get loop supported kennel
------------------------------------------------------------
Questions
1. What is S-off ( ignore this if you are annoyed )?
2. Does kennel need S-off to flash (I think so)?
3. Is S-off like hard HSPL on winmo? Does not affect main rom?
4. Is there loop supported kennel to run ubuntu via croot? I saw a rom that dev promised support in future posted around december. I am not professional so I dont think i want to make custom kennels even with right tools and tutorials
5. Do you think other guides e.g. ubuntu for galexy tab does not need loop kennel and can be used for our desire z (note i am not G2) ?
I have tried my best to search in XDA . I would appreciate if you can redirect me to some guide if necessary. Thank you.

I don't know enought to help out here... but all I gotta say is that I am excited to see where this is gonna go.

The g2 has an additional security feature that stops you from flashing a custom rom. This is s-on. You can gain superuser promition with s-on so you can use root programs but if I remember right you will loose your root every time you reboot. My phone has been s-off for so long people tell me the way I did it doesn't work anymore. I think what you need is gfree or something similar.
G2 CM6.1.1 (free)

I was looking in to this my self. I read http://xdatap1.wordpress.com/2009/05/04/jaunty-lxde-on-android/ that the kernal in cyanogen would be suitable for booting your device into ubuntu. Let me know how this works out as i am really considering doing this my self

I might try this out as well. You will definatly need s off first.

[Q] upgrade from 2.2 to 2.3.x without rooting

It is a shame to say that I still use Android 2.2 with Kernel 2.6.32.21, Taiwan version since I bought the phone a year ago.
(Not until recently, I have decided to move on to Gingerbread because
I wanna use the the latest features in the NDK to write some C++ programs for Android.)
Without getting into trouble during/after rooting,
I tried an official OTA upgrade but it doesn't work.
I tried to ask HTC but they said they still don't have any official upgrade for my phone.
I am a newbie here in this forum,
Could anybody please kindly offer your help please?
It will be GREATLY APPRECIATED! I wanna make my App!!!
swimd
If there is no official Gingerbread for your phone (which seems odd ?) then you can flash a different official GB ROM onto your phone. But normally your phone isn't going to let you do this, because it will fail the signature checks.
What you need to do is to de-brand your phone so that it doesn't do these checks any more. I will see if I can dig out a link to a guide and edit it into my post, unless someone else beats me to it.

Steviewevie,
Thank you for your help in advance!
I can't copy and paste the link right now, but use the Search function in the Android Dev forum to find the thread called "Debranding Bell Desire Z" (it doesn't only apply to Bell phones).
Sent from my Desire Z running CM7.
Thank you for the help!
I have found that thread!
BTW, after a quick look of the thread, it seems that S-off is recommended...
Do I need to get "root" in order to do so?
Should I do that to prevent future trouble?
Always recomend rooting phones right away, if you have a custom recovery and an enginering bootloader you can save tons of headaches in the future when problems arise (as they often do) this of course is outside the fact that a rooted phone is a happy phone and certainly not an apple

As demkantor said, getting S-OFF is a lot better because it gives you a lot more options for the future, even if you don't use those options straight away.
IMHO the only reason to use the goldcard method and not full S-OFF is if you are really worried about voiding your warranty or the S-OFF process yourself. But there's no need to worry really, since (a) you can easily reverse the process if you need to, and (b) lots of people here can help you through getting S-OFF (the XDA Wiki explains it very well, though it can look daunting at first).

+1 to the notion of just rooting the phone. Especially since if are software developer, I would think that you would want full control over your device. And if you have these type of skill, rooting will be easy.
As mentioned, root, S-Off etc. can be removed for warranty purposes, if that is the concern.
The Wiki method is generally accepted as the safest:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD
demkantor and all,
Thanks!!! ok, I am least I will go for S-OFF!
But, I need to be able to fully recover my OS and Apps,
I need to do some research on stock recovery and/or custom recovery...
Well, I think there is an official update to Gingerbread thou.. But I think dont think that version is in English as it is a Hongkong version.

You do not need Eng-off as Wolfganght stated. With newer Desire HDs I would not even attempt it. His link is also outdated for info. Just follow the link that Ma5t3rG gave you.
Some users are complaining about the aahk...it's bricking their dhds so i found that the safest way was to do the original steps like i rooted my phone and many other dhds without a single problem... i was just tryin to help ....and abt the aahk do you really recommend and do you guarentee that it works on all versions of dhds or just the new ones i personaly never tried it ?

It works on all versions of the dhd. I've yet to see one where it doesn't. The ace hack kit does not brick anything. Its just people are to lazy to read and properly setup their PC's for the kit to run. Plus they have an irc room to help people out yet "mysteriously" they miss that to even though its in the op.
To add what agoattamer said, eng soff is not needed but if you really want it the hack kit has a new feature to install it. Do not use any other tool as newer dhd get messed up when using older methods that are incompatible

What He said. The AAHK is the only proven Root method for this device. Bricks happen when people are lazy.

[SOLVED] New HTC Desire (Android) user, need help

Before all jump on me being noob, yes I watched video and read rules. I hope I post this thread in place where it belongs.
I am not native English speaker so please don't throw me in fire if you see some writing errors.
I have always been Nokia user, from 1995 to this day, and now I got HTC Desire, it is old but I got it for free, it was in the box almost 1-2 years (never used) and that person discovered it before a month and gave it to me because he don't need it.
This thing is along first editions by the look of it, Android 2.1 Eclair, Amoled
I have updated it to latest official update (as I can remember 2.2.2)
I got spare MicroSD card (8GB class 10) and it working good with it (looks better then 4GB one I got with phone)
I also added some aps etc..memory was soon filled..I saw on Google that its common problem.
Now after some intro..lets go to my questions..
1. My goal is to root device and put best/stable rom with HTC Sense thing, mostly for additional memory on SD and as I did understand better control and speed of my phone - is that correct?
2. Is it possible to back-up EVERYTHING on my phone, store it to PC, and return it if I am not happy with new ROM, so I can continue to use it exactly where I left it with all my apps and file there?
3. I really don't know anything about android (some things I have read about rooting on google..) so I would need help, someone to point me at correct tutorials and rom to download. Maybe I am Android noob but I am good with PC so dont worry I will make some noob mistakes while rooting and adding new rom.
All my phone info I could find:
So its 2.2.2.

try this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
pretty straight foward, next time please search before starting a new thread
and if that doesnt work, search how to root desire with revolutionary
i first started with this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
very helpful if you don't know anything about what you're doing (like you and me) ^^
the most difficult question would be, which ROM to use. you said you'd like to keep Sense.
well here is an overview of every ROM you can get for your desire:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809328
find out the differences between them, and then decide which one suits you best. but don't be afraid to try non-sense (haha, no pun intended ) ROMs.
now some explicit answers:
(1) yes, almost every ROM allows you to move internal storage to your SD and some even speed up your device. with some you could experience reboots now and then, but thats rather rare.
(2) yes, you can backup everything. there are two ways to do that:
a - NANDroid backup: it creates some kind of an image (like the .ISO is the image of a DVD), which can be restored, so that your phone looks the same as before.
i recommend it every time you change or update your ROM. NANDroid backups are available after you rooted and S-OFF'd your device.
b - there are many apps on the market to backup nearly every part of your user data. the most popular is Titanium Backup. it can make a copy highscores, user input like passwords, bookmarks of your browser, and so on.
contacts can usually be secured via your googlemail account.
all of those backups can and will be placed on you SD card, from where you can easily copy them to your desktop pc.
question 3 is already answered...keep an eye out for sticky threads (the ones pinned on top of every sub-forum) and you will find all the information needed.
good luck.
The easiest way to learn about android is to test it out..play with it as much as you want and about rooting use revolutionary, it's the fastest and easiest method. Also, about restoring your Rom, you can do that by backing it up in recovery, nandroid backup as they call it.

the two guides linked in the posts 2 and 3 are quite outdated. neither even mention revolutionary.
revolutionary does not give you root. it performs s-off. root comes after flashing the superuser.zip.
@OP, i always recommend this set of guides, which explain a bit more in detail about what everything is first, so you can get an understanding of what you're doing before you do it (just as important!). the video guide is also useful to take you through the actual process.
take your time, i'm sure you'll eventually find what you want :good:
Thanks to all, I will "study" all links before proceed, Like I said I was just looking for few answers with directions of correct tutorials.
hmm..after reading all that stuff I am just confused.
Can anyone point at step-by-step tutorial of how to just make my phone have additional memory on SD card, I want to keep my official 2.2.2. ROM with all apps installed.
As I understand I need to root phone and make some linux partition on SD.
Now, I don't know how to keep apps already installed etc so thats where you guys step in with tutorials for my problem.
Few things to keep in mind:
I dont want S-OFF if not needed
I dont want to change my RADIO, ROM or whatever.
Just additional memory on SD card.
Thanks advance.
in that case you should take a look at this:
Link2SD
it's an application that allows you to move apps to your 2nd SD partition. no need to flash ROMs or anything else.
the only premise is that you need root.
i don't know if this app has any disadvantages...
but i recommend you to take a closer look at flashing ROMs anyways, because most people (including me) claim that their phone was kinda revived with a new custom ROM.
it's really worth a try. sure, there's a huge amount of reading involved, but in the end it's simpler than you think.

first you need root to install titanium backup then, you can take complete backups of your apps, cuz installing a custom ROM will surely destroy the apps.......just take your time, you'll get it........ I took 3 Weeks like you , reading, searching and reading some more..... Then i started doing, and all things fell in place., 1 year has passed and not looking back....

it does take a lot of time to understand it all, that's a good thing. many people with no experience with rooting have used the guides successfully
as above, links2sd should work. however, i was exactly the same, thinking i didn't want a custom rom, just thought i wanted more memory. but a custom rom is well worth the time when you find the right one for you. :good:

s-off is not absolutely necessary, but is much more versatile, and more useful if things go wrong in the future. revolutionary will perform s-off anyway, and is ideal for your hboot version. don't be scared of it.
upgrading radio is not absolutely necessary
So after all readings and courage building, today I have decided to run operation X (lol)
Here is what I have done for now:
1. Done many things with PC drivers and comms PC-Mobile
2. S-OFF via Revolutionary
3. Denied CUSTOM RECOVERY from Revolutionary, read somewhere that 4EXT Recovery Touch is better. (I hope I didn't do something wrong with this decision)
4. Installed 4EXT Recovery Touch - custom recovery
5. From Recovery installed Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed
Now, it looks like I have now HTC Desire with S-OFF and root.
If I understand correctly now I can install titanium backup and also do nandroid backups.
After all backups I do, then I can proceed to new custom roms, extend memory to SD etc..still I am not sure do I want do more then extend mem.. Well, with time I will probably explore new roms just for fun or whatever.
But for today I have done enough (too much stuff in short time for newbee ))
BTW for now all has gone without problem or errors.
Thank everyone on help.

You can still S-OFF your phone.
After a while, the script might (if needed) try to download a PD98IMG file. When it gives an error simply google for the filename (might be PD98IMG-GB2 for example) and place it in the PD98IMG directory AAHK created. Everything should go well. I S-OFF'd my Desire yesterday.

Sorry KirovAir, but if the people you are advising to use the Hack Kit get stuck due to not following instructions or some other issue, will you support that? Because let me remember you that the Hack Kit is no longer supported nor here or in the IRC channel. Don't you think that what you are advising is dangerous and might leave quite a few fellas with their phones in a blank screen?

Thanks for the information!
I had also read about 'Easy Ace Root Tool' in dev forum. But I have a question regarding that.
- It says that only Custom ROMs can be installed, not Ported ROMs. What is meant by 'ported ROMs'? Will I not be able to install, say Sabsa prime or Venom's ROM(which are ported from One S and Desire X), if I unlock bootloader using Easy Ace root tool?
Also, does it support flashing 4ext recovery?
could you please tell me at least which version of aahk you used? already found in the web PD98IMG-GB2 and i am willing to do the proccess... already red many forums about rooting my desire hd. but since you did that proccess already i think you can give some reliable tips even if this topic is unsupported here. i know that discussing about aahk is unwelcome in the xda forum and i am sorry for this but i think you would agree that its the way with the most chances of success. or anyway could you suggest me any another way to follow?
thank you for yoour time

Unlocking the bootloader will allow you to flash any recovery that is for the device (DHD / Inspire 4G), Custom roms built from source (CM) and modified sense roms work great. Ported roms I am not sure, but you can try it out. In the worst case scenario, you might get stuck in the splash screen and you will have to flash a different one.

You don't need S-OFF to root. You can just run this and you will be just fine. You don't have to be a programmer to root your phone, just do a little reading and searching will suffice.

New to the Vision

Hi
I had a p350 for ages, finally got a Vision, and now I'm stumped as to how to push a new kernel/baseband/rom to it.
Searching the forum gave me nothing of value, can anybody possibly link me a tutorial?
Think of baseband as radio, just so you don't go looking for it
The best way to root your phone to do all these things is to exploit with gfree, which will probably require a downgrade first.
Just do an xda or Google search for one of three guides, or all three, the more reading you do the better
Xda wiki vision
Cyanogenmod wiki root HTC desire z
Strawmetal PDF guide root HTC g2 dz
Don't use any other guide but the ones mentioned and you'll be fine, if your confused on what to do after root search the general section of this thread and find a tutorial made by rizzoizzo to flash your first ROM and more

Cheers, it was just the first few things that had me stumped.
I realize that this is still not quite the right forum, but I am new to the vision much like the title of the thread would suggest :|
Alright, I got SlimRom 4.2.2 to boot I just have to go and change to DPI to something acceptable for my sister's standards xD what in the world is 4ext recovery? I know 4ext is a file system format or something of the sort, but I have never heard of it as a recovery...
Please point me in the direction of you "Stupid Questions" thread, or what you have as an equivalent. Most device forums has it sticked xD
First thing you need to know is how to root properly, there are a few ways to gain root but the o lay good way for this phone is with the gfree method, if you did any other way fix it now before you end up with headaches. A post above explains where to go
Next being your new to HTC, I highly suggest learning fast boot
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27796375
I also have a more comprehensive yet unfinished guide at xda-u, but this will due and will also get you 4ext recovery (ext 4 is a partition type, 4ext is the best recovery made for android)
