[Q] Red exclamation mark after bungled update - Desire General

I'm an idiot, I had a rooted HTC Sense (2.2) Rom installed and tried to do the over the air update last night, now I can get into recovery but I get the red triangle with an exclamation mark in it. I have, no really, searched and tried a few fixes but I'm not getting anywhere.
HTC Desire
BRAVO PVT1 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.93.0001
I tried the modaco solution but skipped the first two steps and started at 3;
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes you have indeed acted stupid...
But don't worry. The red triangle with the exclamation is just the standard HTC recovery screen. This is because the OTA update updates bootloader and recovery to the non modified ones, so you are basically back to stock.
If you can boot the system all you need to do is to use unrevoked again. If you cannot boot into system, you need to use a ruu first.

Thanks very much for your reply, I did backup first within recovery so I guess once I'm rooted again I can restore?

Any pointers? I can't boot and when I rooted last time I used unrevoked3, could you point me to a thread which could help please?

you just have to look for an ruu.exe wich fits to your phone....

Okay, I'm being less of a 'tard I think and I'm trying to make a gold card, but ADB lists my phone as offline (when on the red triangle screen) and wont let me invoke the shell. Am I still missing the obvious?

There's many threads on here.
Search for '2.29.405.5'.
I'm assuming that's the rom you're on.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk

That hasn't helped me, I've just got a list of nice custom roms which I can't have until my phone boots

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=869048
There you go. Download the file, plug in your phone while booted in fastboot and run the .exe file.

3 minutes is not long enough to justify a thorough search!!!

Totally agreed but bear with him. When people believe their device is "bricked" or f***** they tend to panic

Thank you very much

Sorry, you're right I should have tried harder but am getting in the neck for not having a working phone - thanks so much for your help, I really do appreciate it.

Sorry but I'm still stuck, the RUU won't work in Windows 7 which my PC runs and when I use Parallels on my Mac (the only XP machine I have) it won't detect the phone - is there a way I can do this under OSX?

you need to put your phone into fastboot - power and back button, then connect it to your PC.
turn off any antivirus/firewalls as these can interfere with the RUU.
also, install HTC sync if it isnt already
HTH

also, can you confirm which ROM you were on before the OTA?
and which RUU you are using?

Thanks, forgot about HTC Sync so installing it now - I was on this ROM;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=789058
and using the RUU mortenmhp linked to.

I was missing HTCSync, updating now in Parallels, thanks again for the help - feel like a retard this evening.

ok, do you know what the original rom was that was on your phone when new?
sorry for so many questions, but it should help sort it out.

ignore my last post then
glad its getting sorted....

[Q] G2 stuck at HTC screen.

Hey guys, I tried to perma root my wife's G2 last night using Visionary+ r14 but when it tried to reboot it doesn't get past the green and white "HTC" screen, so now I have a couple of questions.
I bought this phone from someone off of Craigslist and it was working great until I tried to root it so it is technically out of warranty do you think I can get it replaced since everything is still stock?
Also I tried to apply the HTC OTA update to fix it and I still have the problem, is there anything I can do to repair this phone? Thanks in advance guys and mahalo!
Okay pull your battery out and put it back in..after dat press power button and volume down button until you get to the recovery screen and do a factory reset..
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Thanks for the reply jboiii15. I did a factory reset before I flashed the OTA update and I have factory reset several times but still no go. I appreciate you taking the time to help me out.

I haven't tried it because I can't get ADB to work with the phone the way it is, Fastboot works but ADB just shows nothing there while I'm in recovery or the boot screen. Thank you also for the reply. My wife is pissed lol.
Try to extract the ROM from the official RUU and rename it to PC10IMG.zip. Put this on the root of your SD card and boot into bootloader and leave it to work. This should solve your problem Fingers Crossed
JD
do you have s-off??
I don't have S-OFF as I just started the rooting procedure when it decided to take a dump on me, after this I don't think my wife will want me to root any more of her phones although I know she'll miss it after having a rooted G1 running CM and a rooted Slide running Chromatic. Good thing I didn't sell her Slide yet lol.
I'll try to find information on the PC10IMG.zip method now and see what can be done.
Thank you guys for all the help, I really appreciate it all.

I think the rooting process has corrupted your kernel or rom, it is rare to get a brick from just the visionary process, but i know there has at least been one that this has happened to.
Report back to tell us if the extracted ROM worked for you, there is still hope;')
JD
Oh man this is just getting worse lol. I had the phone sitting here plugged into my laptop while the phone was in the Hboot screen where you can select Fastboot, Recovery and so on. All of a sudden my here Windows give off the noise as if something was connected or disconnected from my computer and I see the screen shut off on the G2 with a red light blinking. Now the phone doesn't power on and the red light blinks while the phone is plugged into the computer but doesn't power on.
As I was typing this the red light came on solid as if it is charging now, maybe it doesn't charge while in that screen and the battery just died I dunno, strange.

Well I called T-Mobile and they are sending out a new phone, I'm unsure if I should still mess with it or not. I did flash the TMOUSA OTA update and that didn't help, I didn't unpack it to see if it contained a new Kernel but I'm sure it had a new system.img, still think it is one of those that is messed up?
I'm having a hard time finding the things to get the PC10IMG.zip going, work is calling me in different directions and my A.D.D is kicking in lol.
try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855764 i had the same problem like you, steviewevie told me to do it, if you have problem to connect your g2 with sdk download pda net, it works for me and now i have my g2 back with the new root... just do what it said on that link believe me works...
P.D. I am a androidnoober always have a iphone and this was my first time using sdk adb or whatever name is and I did it
Thanks AndroidNoober, I've seen that link in my search for an answer to my problem. One of the issues that is making this harder is that after the phone "bricked" it lost ADB connectivity. I've tried it on two computers that have a properly working ADB (I test it with my N1 and 3G Slide) and it used to work with the G2 but now I can't get it to see the phone, I've heard Recovery has ADB blocked.
semi bricked attempting permaroot
i attempted permaroot and semi bricked my phone. will not boot past htc screen. i can't get adb to work. i am trying to get pdanet installed but it keeps getting stuck on installing on phone. can it install while phone is in recovery mode? i have had no sucess trying to figure this out on my own and phone is not covered with a warranty
i have gotten the phone to read an update.zip file.
it is reading the pc10img.zip as well.
now i just have to get past the htc screen.
i do have s-on as i had just started the process.
any help would be appreciated

[Q] Bricked my DHD, please help :(

Let me just start off by saying poop.
I've been reading up on these forums quite a lot, equipping myself with enough knowledge to get going on using this phone to its potential.
After the anticipation of getting my DHD, I went about rooting it. I used this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841076.
Everything went fine without much trouble. I completed all the steps in rooting it and gaing SU access. Also installed the Clockwork Recovery mod without a hiccup. I went on to install the Android Revolution ROM and going through the guide I used a tool called: 'Easy Wipe Upgrade.'
After installing this zip, the phone reboot and it just refuses to budge. Stuck on the HTC splash screen.
I've held down the bottom volume button with power and it gets me into HBOOT. I've tried a variety of option such as factory resets and nothing seems to be working.
My luck and phones. Just have a very expensive brick now sitting on my desk. Ah
I'd appreciate any help I can get please. Thanks.
I managed to resolve it!
Just FYI. Mounted the USB (Which was hidden fairly deeply) I guess you don't look when you panic? I then dropped on the ROM and installed it and boot up took a while but voila, it worked!
Well done, I would go mental if I bricked my phone. That's why I am still just reading up rather than trying things.

in the exact same situation as you where Could you go into abit more detail how you resolved this? currently have no phone cheers
whats wrong with your phone mate
Just so you know, as long as you have access to the bootloader (can be stock bootloader with S-ON, doesn't matter), 99% of the time you can 'unbrick' your phone by installing a stock RUU (PD98IMG.zip method) which returns your phone to complete stock.
If you install the wrong RUU while ENG HBOOT S-OFF then you can potentially fudge up your phone for good (unless you have Radio S-OFF, then you are fine - just install the correct RUU).
So don't worry, because there is nearly always a way to go back to how your phone was before you started hacking it.

You are not supposed to rename the RUU file, rather you run the RUU file and then afterwards locate the ROM.zip file located in your temp folder. This ROM.zip file is meant to be renamed PD98IMG.zip, NOT the RUU file.
ok that was stupid of me.. ok will try to give it a go..
sorry if this sounds stupid to you again.. but, i just wana be sure.. its my first smartphone..
anyway, i run the ruu file on my pc, yeah? so then when i run it, it asks me to connect my dhd using the usb cable.. so i did... but it couldnt detect my phone.. thus, it couldnt continue it's setup.. ;-( thank you for helping out..
Make sure you install HTC Sync, it should also install all the DHD USB drivers needed.
hey, do you have any step by step guide on doing this? im afraid il do something wrong again and just risk messing up the phone even more..
i have htc sync and the htc drivers on my laptop but when i connect the usb plug to my phone and try to run the ruu.. it still gives me the prompt of no connection from the pc and android phone.. :-| what am i doing wrong? sorry...
thanks in advance for the any help!
i managed to get to the update part.. but now it prompts a 131 error message.. :-( help?

[Q] Flashed Gingerbread and gone wrong

Hi all,
I have read docs until I am blue in the face and I cant get my phone going again. I fear I am going around in circles.
I had a defrost 2.2 installed and i thought I would put a latest radio on and try a gingerbread rom(Oxygen v2.0 RC5).
I only got the white HTC screen after this.
I fear I might have probs with s-off or something..
I cant get my clockwork recovery working now and I cant get the adb stuff working either.
I have tried unrevoked,recovery-windows.bat,and now alpharev - tinycore.
I am stuck with the trusty old red triangle. argghh
Thanks in advance
Dred
your post is a 0-tone
If you are S-Off -> fastboot flash a recovery
If not -> get a RUU for your device
In any case: search and post in Q&A

Thank you will do - Wasnt paying attention. Just frantically trying to get my phone back.
How do you install an RUU? I only have the red triangle with an exclamation mark if I start my recovery up.
I have tried 2 diff pcs now to no avail.
TIA
Did you S-Off? To check you can just hold VolumeDown when powering on the phone, if it says Alpharev ... S-OFF then you are fine. You can try to use this fastboot commander http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=823315 to flash back a custom recovery an then do everything from there (careful: don't flash anyting else as long as you are not sure what you are doing. Especially don't flash a hboot...).
If you don't have S-Off get this RUU http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...9.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_157522_signed.exe
Make sure the HTC Sync stuff is installed on your Windows PC (the drivers are needed). Power on the phone and connect it to the pc.
Run The RUU...exe and follow the instructions. If it does not work you need a goldcard:

I have flashed loads and loads of Roms and this is the first that caused me agg and as we are having a baby I was worried about not having my phone - doh.
It appears that all I needed to do was clear some data. I was sure I tried this but maybe I was panicking too much.
Still no RUU stuff was even realising the phone was there. So Goldcard it would have been.

[Q] Stuck in recovery boot loop HTC Desire GSM ~ ASSISTANCE APPRECIATED!!

Severe panic!!
I rooted my Desire which was running 2.2 Froyo on the O2 UK network using unrevoked and it worked fine without any issues. Custom recovery by ClockworkMod.
The next day I then decided i needed to turn S-off so found a guide and tried installing unrevoked forever from a zip on the root of the SD and i got 'installation aborted error 42'. Tried again the next day but before i got started i decided to give myself re-assurance that i wouldnt lose anything on the device so i entered recovery and chose restore.
Big mistake! My handset then rebooted and got to the O2 splash screen. It wont move from there. Pulled battery out and tried again. Same. I assume i havent bricked the device and it is just stuck in a boot loop?
Since then i have removed all my user data from the SD card and 'cleared storage'. Tried installing an miui rom and again 'installation aborted'.
Can anyone clarify why this is happening and point me in the right direction?
I am a noob and would appreciate any help on this.

Try to bring you phone to stock.
Download RUU .
Turn your phone on in fastboot (hold back button and press power - when your phone is off).
You have to have HTC Sync installed.
Run the exe file.
After that repeat the rooting and s-off-ing procedure.
Can the RUU be flashed in clockwork mod recovery or does it have to go through HTC Sync?
If it cannot be flashed in Clockwork Mod, I presume he has to
Connect phone via USB to PC,
boot into Fastboot as you mentioned
run HTC Sync
and then run the Ruu.exe file (does HTC Sync recognise this filetype and then do it's thing?)
And that's it? (Just that it seems too simple!)

Hello. I think you wanted to say you chose back-up, otherwise you couldn't have chosen the restore option since you don't have any restore points.
So if you hit back-up and your phone stuck in the boot loop it is normal. This is a problem because of the root and the fact that making a nandroid back-up will mess something in the NAND. But restoring the back-up you just made should resolve all the problems. I had the same issue and by only restoring the back-up I've just made got me working back, and still had the ROOT.
I don't think you need to run a RUU just for this.

I should have made clearer sorry. After i rooted successfully i entered recovery and hit backup option and it told me it had created a backup successfully. I had been using the phone as normal for another day before deciding to s-off and at that point i thought to 'test' my backup to make sure it had done it so i chose restore thinking anything i have downloaded on the phone since the back up will disappear and was expecting the restore to bring my phone back to the settings i had the previous day but the restore failed and thats when it got stuck in the boot loop.
Mine did the same thing except, instead of trying to s-off it just decided at one point that it felt like it, literally, I wasnt even using it at the time it was just charging. I did downloaded the stock ruu, it was linked earlier. Put it in fastboot, run the ruu and boom, however i did it on my goldcard, so make one if it doesnt work without it. Good luck.

***NEW ISSUE***
Since i have my phone back to it's original state and have lost root access. The idea is to root again via Unrevoked, which requires me to update the Android 1.0 driver (in device manager under other devices) to the Android Bootloader Interface. However, DM now does not say 'other devices - Android 1.0' and instead it says 'Android Devices - MY HTC'. So i decided to completely uninstall HTC Sync and all it's drivers and then rebooted PC, reinstalled SYNC and then uninstalled again but this time leaving the drivers in. Rebooted again and repeated the process but it still recognises the device as 'MY HTC' instead of 'Android 1.0'.
Could it be that this is fine, it's just the new way since i am using the updated version of HTC sync now? Or is this going to cause an issue? I am now playing it a lot safer to avoid anymore issues and quite happy to try something you may suggest...

Thanks for the suggestions surrounding ADB but i guess im too much of a noob for that part, it seems massively complicated, im sure it doesnt to you guys. Isnt there an easier way? Or considering my above quote, can i just assume that its all working fine and go ahead with the root or should it really need to have 'Android 1.0' in device manager?
Im pretty certain this all happened becuase the first time i rooted i had followed instructions and uninstalled HTC Sync (not the drivers) which had been on my system since i got the phone lat year. Since i had to reinstall to flash the RUU im certain its an updated version of HTC Sync thats causing this issue. But is it really an issue?

As i am a noob, can you clarify "start abd" ??

This should answer all your questions.

HTC DESIRE unroot with RUU 2.3.3 failed

Hi guys.
I know there are several posts already opened about this, but I`ve tried all I read there and nothing worked.
I wanted to send my rooted Desire back for repairs(camera LED broken thanks to a Torch app), and wanted to unroot it before I do.
I`ve read on some posts that u can unroot the phone by running the official Gingerbread 2.3.3 RUU found on htcdev.com (the official RUU), so I downloaded the RUU, installed hTC Sync, installed the Desire`s USB drivers(the same one`s that are required when rooting with Revolutionary).
The RUU started installing, the phone rebooted into the HTC splash screen and the "update" of the RUU started going, both PC and phone showed the cursor of the installing process, and at about 90% the PC gave me an error (update error).
I`ve tried again and again to run the RUU but everytime, it failed. And now, my Desire just won`t boot. I`ve taken the battery out, put it back, turned it on, and the only thing that appers on the screen is the white HTC logo on a black background, with 4 icons in each corner of the screen(looks just like the icon that appears when u plug in the usb cable with USB debugging mode ON).
Volume-down+Power and BACK+Power don`t work anymore, even though I press them, the phone just simply ignores the keys and takes me back to the before mentioned hTC splash screen.
I know this is probably something I did wrong, but if there`s any one kind enough to help me out with this, I`d deeply appreciate it.
Thank you!

It doesn`t say anything.
This is what I do:
1. Take the battery out.
2. Put the battery back in place
3. Try turning phone on using: Volume-down+Power -> the phone doesn`t show anything, it simply takes me to the HTC logo(white HTC logo on black background. It does the same thing if I turn it on using BACK+Power)
If I try running the RUU again, the installer gives me the next message: Error[152]: image update error.
From what I`ve read, this is a radio error which can only be fixed by hTC. Could that be true?
Also, after the RUU gives me the above error, if I unplug the USB cable, the phone shows following:
*************
RUU
Radio_V2 - OK
Splash1 - OK
Recovery - OK
Splash2 - OK
Radio_cust - OK
Bootloader - Bypassed
Userdata - OK
System - Fail-PU
Boot - OK
Partition update fail!
Update fail!
*************
I have the Alpharev CM7 r2 bootloader.
even if it is its covered by htc warranty so don't worry about it
I don`t think it coveres it, as the Alpharev CM7 R2 bootloader still shows.

oh you're still S-OFF?
You're automatically in fastboot when you turn on since your phone is like that so just turn it on, plug it in first flash this and then flash this, Then run the RUU again.
Yes, I`m still S-OFF.
How do I flash them if I can`t access recovery using Volume-down+Power or BACK+Power?
I`ve downloaded the first one, renamed it into PB99IMG.zip, put it on root of SD CARD, turned phone ON and it takes me to the same htc logo screen as before.
LE
Tried with Android Flasher, but it gets stuck when trying to flash the bravo_alphaspl.img that u`ve given me.
So basically, I can`t enter Clockworkmod, I can`t enter the bootloader menu by turning on phone usine Volume-down+Power / Back+Power, and the phone is stuck in the HTC logo, while still S-OFF-ed, also the 2.3.3 official RUU gives me the error at the end of the installing process.
Does anyone have any idea what I could do?
Bortak, one million thanks for the help, patience and the time you`ve wasted.

My desire lives again

Haha it's cool dude but if I ever visit I may holla at you for some of those beers though
I have the exact same problem as i_cs_u.
I tried to use an RUU to install 2.3, I have alpharev cm7r2 installed and I get stack on the same step as i_cs_u. I successfully flashed bravo_alphaspl.img with "fastboot boot bravo_alphaspl.img", but which partition do I flash bravo_downgrade.img to?
Flash bravo_downgrade.img and then the RUU.

He probably figured out that he has to use the fastboot flash boot *name of img* command or Android Flasher on that screen with the 4 ! At the corner instead of renaming to PB99IMG and attempting to flash it on the phone.
Sent from my HTC Original Desire with Android 4.0.1 ICS using Tapatalk
but i dont know how to do it from fastboot. i need an explaination of the process.
