Flashing roms - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was just wondering how to keep my apps and wallpaper after I flash a new rom. I want to try different roms but after flashing a new one I had to re-download all my android apps and widgets and set up my home screen again like the phone was new is there a way to flash a new rom and make it look like nothing changed?

you cant because you dont know if its compatible from your old rom to your new one thats why when you flash your rom u have to wipe the cash and do a factory reset

Multiple Rom Question

I've rooted before but this will be my first time using ROMs. I've already flashed to one ROM but curious to try others. Do I have to wipe and flash to another ROM, etc? Or is there a way to have multiple ROMs?
Try bootmanager it let's you boot multiple roms.
It says ICS is having issues with it :-(
Only one way to find out! It is the only one I know of dude.
You can always make a backup of your current rom ans restore it after trying another

Go into ROM Manager and make a nand backup of your Rom before flashing. Depending on which ROM you are moving to it is a good idea to then copy the rommanager/backup folder off to your PC before wiping then you can copy it back if needed.

How do people switch form one ROM to another so fast?

I've seen people talking about how they switch from one rom to another like 3 times a day and i was wondering how they would do that if there was another way than having to go through the flashing steps. Can you strait up pick a former recovery and boot into that? If so, can you have multiple roms as recovery so you can like switch between them with just a click of the power button? I apologize if this comes off as a noob question.
As long as they use the same boot.IMG like going from aokp to CDMA build 118 but u need to flash diff image if going from aokp to sense. I've had problems going from jb to ics ROM recoverys .

I switch among custom ROM like 3-4 times a day. I can easily do that because PA, CM10, AOKP, MIUI JB has the same base (CM10) so I don't need to flash different kernel in fastboot which requires a pc to do that. therefore I can simply flash/restore them in recovery. So it is possible to change different custom ROM in one day if as long as they have the same boot.img.
PS: that was just based on my experience.

Please Help :(

Ok. My problem isn't anything major or anything, but whenever I flash a new rom(ever since starting today after I tried installing how to theme your phone like a mega boss), I started having this glitch/bug/whateveryouwanttocallit where I would see the wallpaper from how to theme your phone like a megaboss as default. EX: When I install Whomp Rom, instead of getting the WHOMPASARUS ROM on the homescreen wallpaper, I get the one from the how to theme your phone like a mega boss(Lockscreen is still the whomp rom wallpaper). Why is my phone acting this way? I tried wiping internal data/data/system/basicallyeverything. I didn't try reseting my phone to default or anything like that. Helps?
Anyone?

What recovery are you using?
I'm not familiar with CWM but with TWRP you should be doing wipe of System and also the Factory Reset. That should pretty much wipe everything on the phone. Don't know what would allow anything to stick after that.

Wipe system, cache, dalvik, and factory reset. Flash new rom. When the rom boots up dont sign into your google account. Go to the home screen and check your wallpaper. Your Google account might be syncing your wallpaper every time you sign in after flashing a new rom.

Oh. It can do that? Lol. I didn't know since it never happened before. Thanks

[Q] looking to switch roms? currently running jellybomb

Im new all this rooting and rom stuff and yesterday morning i successfully rooted and inststalled the jellybomb 14.0.0 jelly bean rom thanks to qbking77's on point videos. so the question is... how can i switch which rom im running? i like the jellybeen roms and im looking to explore more to see which better suits my needs. ive heard of doing clean/dirtry instals or something of the sort but i want the best and safest way possible so i dont run into any bricking trouble. please help?
Ok, read up on how to flash a recovery
Download the rom of your choice and place it.on your sdcard. Once you do that you can install roms by booting into recovery and finding the zip for the rom you want to flash and selecting it through the "install zip from sdcard" option
Now a clean install is whenyou wipe all partitions, aka blocks of your phones memory, (details farther down) and then install the rom zip. This method minimizes the chances for problems to occur after installing
A clean flash involves:
Formatting system
Formatting / Clearing data (also known as a factory reset)
Wiping cache
Wiping / Clearing dalvik cache
Now a dirty flash is when you just flash the new rom zip over whatever you're currently rumning, without clearing anything. This method is only recommended when flashing an updated version of the same rom, and even then, the nature of some updates can require you to do a clean flash.
One more thing, DO NOT flash any roms, mods, or zips for the international version. That usa surefire way to brick your debice because the partitions are completely different.
To learn more about how android and this.stuff works, I would suggest heading over to xda,university.com
Thanks for the info. What is the best way to back everything up? I backed everything up wen I installed th jb. Rom and went to restore and couldnt find anythingband had to start from scratch.

Backup via CWM (RECOVERY) is mainly for restoring the same rom or going back to the rom you were running if experimenting, Now, can use apps such as Titanium backup to save all the other settings, apps and things. Once you flash your new rom, download it, open program and can restore your stuff that way. Personally, I'll wipe, start from scratch, sometimes i'll download an app i never use, and it just allows me to clear out the useless ones.. Happy flashing!

Yes as said above, a backup through recovery (also called a "nandroid" ) stores an EXACT image of the current state of your device. Meaning all data, all system files, all apps, radios, etc. Backing up through an app, like Titanium Backup, only backs up certain things like apps and app data
Basically, if you're trying any experimental stuff that may break your system (for example, flashing a new modem or testing to see if a certain kernel works), then a nandroid is the way to go because you can restore to an exact image of a state when everything was working
Yea I did that the 1st time and couldnt recover anything. Is there a certain way I should recover or maybe I did something wrong? Im not sure. Sorry if im sounding stupid but I cant return my phone if I screw it up so im tryin to be as safe as possible. Hopefully thats understandable

No no, its recovery
The recovery is basically something that allows you to install zips, it doesnt actually have much to do with recovering anything lol
But first do what was suggested right above me to check to see if you have a recovery installed
To get a more detailed description of what a recovery is and what it does, you can get over to xda-university and read through the "as user" section on recoveries
Think cwm has saved a few phones on here. Me I don't use a pc. Easy just with phone. If he's deleted his folder should he recoveR then it would bring that folder bk?

Well yea I kno I have a recovery I use cwm... I jus need to kno how I can actually save my phones content... I dont wanna start fresh everytime I decide to flash a new rom
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
OK titanium bkup. But don't restore all things if your backing up at lot as will save 4.1.2 4.2.1 and 4.2 2 and so on. Don't want to mix as fc will happen

Bootloop on custom

My T989's nav buttons stopped working, so I need to have a custom rom on it to give me a virtual nav bar. Unfortunately, all custom roms are putting me in a boot loop. I have a backup of fresh rooted stock JB rom with twrp 2.6.1 which works perfectly (except for missing the nav bar).
Does anyone have any idea what I can do to fix this and get any custom rom with a nav bar working without bootloop? OR maybe theres a simmmple nav bar mod I can apply to stock?
I know it's not a stuck power button cuz I can go to twrp and download mode to my heart's content and On stock JB, there's no bootloop issue.
If there's any info you would like to know that could help me that I failed to mention, just let me know.
Thanks.
If u r getting bootloops, just format your internal and external cards and wipe your rom with infamouse wipe script abd then install rom. And make sure u have updated radio

Here it is
You DO NOT NEED a custom rom. You need to root your phone and install this! I have the same phone, with the same problem, and this app saved it from going in the trash Button Savior. This is the free version, I bought the paid version, not because I needed the pro features, but just to thank the developer since he saved me from having to buy a new phone.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/170099363/Button_Savior_com.smart.swkey_2.0.2_73[1].apk
I used this to root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2195283
Truth be told though, when my hardware keys went on my t989, is when I learned how to root, so I could run a virtual key app such as this, which then led to custom roms, then kernel tweaking, and now I'm poking around with ROM development. And an FYI, no matter WHAT i tried when installing a custom rom, darkside wipe, full format etc, most roms boot looped on me anyay. The only one that would install which I liked, is Cyanogenmod 10.0 (JB 4.1.2), I love it. Runs great, and no boot loops. Just make sure you use Darkside wipe from the links above
