[Q] Nexus S and Epic 4G - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone ever tried running a Nexus S rom on the Epic 4G?

Yes and it won't boot

Did y'all just flash the file as is or did anyone try to modify anything?

The nexus s is a gsm phone as the epic is cdma. we have things the nexus s don't and vise versa. There's only so much changes that can be done considering we only have a eclair source to compare with. We need froyo source to help fine tune things.

But with it being gsm and this phone being cdma...you should at least get it to boot up if you swap kernels..only thing that shouldnt work if you did that is hardware buttons, wifi, signal and all that other jazz (but those files can be replaced to work).

I will once I get my phone in a few weeks. Thats exactly what happened with the Desire HD rom and the Evo (and the Evo and Nexus One...and Evo and Inc). Swapped out the hardware files and boot.img and it was all good (except for the HD rom which was GSM...had to edit the service.jar file as well I think).

Probably jsut how I mentioned it. When they firs got it on there when it was just the system files...I assume someone made a build.prop and used an AOSP kernel (CM 6.1 ) and it booted up.
And idk if Froyo source has anything to do with it...I can flash a gingerbread rom right now and use any aosp kernel (kernel for 2.2) and it'll be fine.

We don't have a true aosp kernel. We got the cm6.1 kernsl but all it is highly modified inframnts (spelling?) Of dk28. They can't build a true aosp kernel without source from samsung
Sent From Da Hood.

We need official 2.2 source to go anywhere. That's what we still have to wait for.

My touch 3g gets froyo sense...possible port?

So, will this help with the froyo sense camera for hero?
Think there will still be a camera problem but who knows! ill download it and flash see what happens
is there any dev that took a look at this rom? are the camera drivers compatible?
I have PM'd Hawst (creator of the Tegro rom) to see if it is of any use to him.

damn, guess we'll have to wait for another of the few remaining dev's to have a look
Im trying to port it but getting symlinking errors got to go work now so will continue afterwards
Hi Bonesy! Glad to see you are on the case
I had a PM back from Hawst. He thinks we will still have HW problems as seen on the other 2.2 sense ports.
still we can live in hope?! I thought the MT3G was fairly similar to the Hero in terms of HW specs?
I have to agrre with hawst, i think the only rom it can be based on is chocolate froyo which still has no working camera. But still be nice to see it work.
MT3G aka Sapphire / Magic is pretty much the same NOT the Slide / Espresso. You can flash Sapphire (32A) roms on your hero and they more than likely boot but have limited hardware working
You sure? I can flash any magic 32a rom on my hero without any porting?

Yes you can with maybe some weird hardware bugs.. Soo my advice, DONT
Yea i wouldnt advise it, i flashed capyseo v7 the other day and it booted but no sound/camera/wifi or network..Im no dev so dont get your hopes up on me porting!
oh well, just trying to keep the hero alive until the Optimus 3D comes out

From what I understand:
a) Hero and Magic have a different camera....
b) The Camera doesn't even work on the magic w/ the capyseo v7 - I assume this one they can fix now that the MyTouch3G got an official sense ROM.
Yea i only flashed it to see if it would boot lol
Right managed to get it to finally flash without errors (WOOP WOOP) but i have no display and had to play with MTD partitions (dodgy) im waiting for firerat to come online so i can ask some Q's about patching mtd before i try anything more risky as i had increased the /system partition to 200 leaving 2mb on cache :/ and 1% space left on /system so untill i can get more i think there is nothing else i can do
On the plus side i managed to release a rom for the espresso lol
Lol, see you are a dev ...just not for hero...yet
I've completed my Alpha, runs smooth! Calls work, sound works,text/sms works, sdcard works need to test wifi and camera!

Great to hear, i'm still switching between sense 2.1 and stock 2.2, 2.3.
I find the sense interface great, but with 2.1 i missing some options that you have in froyo and gingerbread.
I feel the same but cant put my finger on what i like about sense 2.2?? Maybe that it says 2.2!

[Kernel] Overlock 1.65ghz - Froyo Stock Sense Only

Source: (bwahahha no github)

froyo only
Kernel:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8699733/vivow/vivow.1.65.zip
Only changes are to acpulock-7x30.c , no additional credits/copyrights were in the header of the one I worked off of. If you had a hand it it, let me know so we both can fix that.
Since this isnt even available for everybody yet, is it stable at 1.65ghz?

You will be able to get higher than 2000 with this kernal easily. The thing is though, I don't think you can flash back to froyo after going to GB, or atleast I can't.
this is for GB? Wish it would of stated it in the op. Where can I find a Oc kernel for froyo with this kind of potential?

CM7 on CDMA?

Alright, I installed the CM7 by Alquez, and of course it didn't boot. So I switched to jmz's kernel, and I got it to get to the boot screen. It has the CM7 logo and it's doing it's thing, but I figured it wouldn't fully boot. Anyways, so my question is.....
How can I get a stable and fully working CM7 on my Wildfire S CDMA by VM. Is there a way where I can just replace a working kernel or do I have to wait, or even try my hand at modding.
If I've got to try it for myself, could someone link my to a guide on how to start editing the files and all that.
Thanks.
Edit: Just got it to boot. There are graphical glitches and no data. but everything else seems to be working fine. Except the camera.
The only cm7 that works on cdma/MarvelC is simonsimons34 cm7 wip Rom, the only thing that dosent work is camera, it does not come rooted when you flash it. The Rom you flashed that had glitches is a gsm Rom

Obviously I understand that. What I was asking is... Is there a kernel that allows me to use Alquezs build. I'm new, but not entirely new to this stuff. I was just wondering if his build would work on CDMA models because it states in the post that it's a kernel problem. At least to my understanding.

Hmmm...
Wonder if we could take that ROM, change the updater-script to match our mounting points....then we just need a kernel....
Which we have one kernel already made. Not sure if it would work though.
If anyone would help set up a build environment that would work for our kernels and roms then I will gladly help and start learning.

Well, it shouldn't take too long. It may be possible to build a CM9 Kernel for our phones using parts of the stock kernel that we have access to.
Once the JB source is released, an S3 port might actually be viable. Otherwise it's essentially just flashing a gnex image and praying something/anything works.

a CM9 kernel shouldn't be needed, just a modded kernel for our specific phone from what i believe.
We know this, but it's more of an experiment. Also, it helps work out anything we may need to do early on with the modules and drivers

It could, in theory. But we would need to work on the modules for anything to work. Could you post our mount points?
why does it have to be a cm9 kernel?
to be completely honest, as soon as we get a cm9 alpha, we will see some worth while stuff! but until then. TouchWiz it iz. We will have team kang's AOKP in no time im sure. i cant wait to see wuts to come. especially since this phone is at all the major carriers and they are all basically exactly the same! should be epic.
