I have a rooted Evo running 3.29 and I do not want to lose any of my data. When I updated from 3.26 to 3.29 all I did was download the update in a .zip file and flashed it via recovery.
I want to know if this same method is available for the newest 3.70 update.
I'm a little confused because I have been reading not to flash the update because I will lose root. Now that Unrevoked 3.32 is available I'm not sure if that rule still applies. I've been reading around here for a few weeks and I still have not found a solid answer.
Make sure that all of your contacts are in gmail, make a nandroid(CM) and than reflash (Amo Ra) download this (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PXIYUNSY) (Put in sd card, boot in to boot loader, than say yes to update)This is the easy way to update with out any problems. once everything updates the 1st boot will take a while, after booting make sure to flash Cm with Rom Manager, than reboot in recovery, than select back up and go in to advance restore than select the nandroid that you did earlier, and than restore data only. this will give you all the apps that you had and everything else.
Question? What is CM?
Clockwork Mod(recovery Image) flash with Rom manager app.
Thanks so much!
Please report back.
I will in the morning.
I downloaded the 3.70 RUU & unrooted and updated in 1 step. Prior to doing that I backed up my data and apps using Titanium back up. Rerooted and restored all of my apps & data using Titanium back up. All of my screens, icon and docks were back where they belonged!

Guys, I had been rocking it with an Unrevoked S-OFF root + OTA update. Everything was great. Then I got careless and tried to flash some mod .zip files today and got caught in a splash screen loop. All I could do was nandroid restore from Clockwork. It got me out of the loop, but my phone is now back to 2.1 and all my apps are gone etc etc. But I'm almost certain that I did the backup AFTER I applied the OTA, so I don't understand why I reverted.
The good news is that I'm still S-OFF and I should have Titanium backups on my SD card. The bad news is two fold.
A) I'm not sure the proper steps to take to get back to OTA w/o any issue.
B) when I go to Market, I can't install any apps (getting a download error failure everytime)
Please help! Thanks!
EDIT: RESOLVED!
flash the 2.2 update.zip again

Hey thx for responding. Not sure what you mean - I used the OTA to get to 2.2 last time. Since I'm still S-OFF, do you think it's safe to take the update again?
These are the instructions I followed the first time.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755035
Other note: The only apps I still have installed are the stock apps AND Superuser. Not sure how/why SU survived while the others did not, but it's there.
If your already rooted, which there's no reason you shouldn't be, grab a 2.2 ROM and flash it. Even a stock rooted 2.2 ROM.
Occum's Razor says you didn't back up after the update and restored with a 2.1 backup.

... well I know someone that is damn sure making a 2.2 backup when I get this issue resolved!
I think I found the solution (using OTA).
First I had to data wipe my hard drive, because until I did that i could not access any market downloads and basically the OS was behaving like it was crapped up. Data wipe fixed all that and put me back to stock 2.1. Of course then I couldn't apply the OTA because i was rooted. So I moved the OTA zip to SD card and renamed it update.zip, and launched it from Clockwork. Looks like it worked
PS. No offense to the ROM guys on here, but I'm just not really into custom ROM's. Mostly b/c I don't understand them. But in any event, I just like having the "official" ROM, and then tweaking it to the Nth degree.
Hi all,
Sorry if this has been posted before... I have a desire still running on stock 2.1 (unrooted with launcherpro) which is perfect imho but I want to upgrade to 2.2 just to be "up to date".
Now I would like to take a FULL backup (rom, settings, apps, ...) before I execute the upgrade so I can go back if I want to.
What is the best/easiest way to do this and how can I restore my backup if needed?
*EDIT* Used unrevoked3 to root and backup my 2.1 install but now the OTA fails (see next page). Please help!
Thanks
B
U need to root first
Not true, both mybackup and titanium work without requiring root, you do however need paid versions of either app to make 'an at once backup' then restore the same way. Then the OP needs do create a Goldcard to be able to flash any generic wwe 2.2 ROM.

They don't back up the system partition, though. You need root access to be able to copy those otherwise people wouldn't say do a nandroid before flashing any new ROM
ok so I need to find a root version of my original ROM right? But when I flash this ROM I will lose all my settings and apps I assume?
No
If you root your phone now you won't lose any settings as it just adds root access. You can then backup your phone as it is. You can then do the OTA update to 2.2 (I assume you will update using the prompted OTA, correct??) and your settings will still be intact
great, can you point me in the right direction on how to root my phone? Thx!

If he's just going to OTA there's no need of backing anything up, nothing is lost!

settings and preferences are indeed kept with an OTA upgrade but I want to backup my full 2.1 system before upgrading to 2.2 so I can restore exactly (apps, settings, preferences,...) the way it was
Can someone point me in the direction on how to root my stock phone please? I did this before on my HTC Magic but this involved flashing a rooted ROM which erased all my apps and settings
cheers

If you install the OTA update you will loose root and wont be able to restore your backup unless you root 2.2 again.

yep I would imagine this is the case... any pointers on how to root my 2.1 (and the 2.2) so I don't lose all my apps and settings?
So far what I can find on the web is flashing new superuser rom's... this will erase my apps and settings so not really what I'm looking for.
Thx

root with unrevoked 3.21 is very easy..it root ur phone and install a custom recovery..u dont lost anything..
-with the custom recovery u can make a nandroid backup of ur 2.1
-then u can update the OTA 2.2
-if u dont like it and want come back, root again with unrevoked
-make an other nandroid backup, just in case
-restore the first backup u did (2.1)

thanks I was just running the unrevoked3 while you posted (looking past the first couple of google hits sometimes helps)
My desire is now rooted so going for a nandroid backup now
thx!!
just an extra question: a nandroid backup is really a full backup of everything (applications, application preferences, settings, ...) right? Or should I take additional backups?
additional question: I can't seem to find my nandroid backup on my SD card? Normally this should be in the "nandroid" folder right? But I don't have this folder
*edit*
never mind, I found it, it's under /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/<timestamp>
I was confused about this one because timestamp is always 1 hour off
cheers

ok bad news... I started my OTA upgrade and at about 25% progress I get a picture of a droid and a triangle with exclamation mark.
When I press "menu" I get the Clockworkmod recovery menu and following info:
Clockworkmod recovery v2.5.0.7
Finding update package
Opening update package
Verifying update package
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted
I reboot my phone but am still @ 2.1
Any idea's, does this have anything to do with the unrevoked thing?
Thx!
B
ok got it solved, here's what I did
1) I disabled signature verification in the Clockworkmod menu
2) launched the OTA file (which was saved in the "download" directory) from sd card via the Clockworkmod menu
3) after rebooting I got a message that I only had 20Mb available (needed 25) so I deleted angry birds and re-executed the steps 1 & 2
I got a message that the upgrade is successful, my settings seem to be back (launcherpro and stuff) so looking good...
pfieeuw
Now off to downloading angry birds again
PS Looks like I'm still root btw
I was using warm z twopointtwo and I decided to try skyraider 4. I backed up the warmz rom and installed skyradier 4. Well I decide to go back to warm z but my backup will not restore. I get stuck on the white htc droid incrdible screen. Any ideas?

did you do a full wipe b4 restoring?
yes i did. The restore doesnt seem like it take as long though. I backed up through rom manager. Would that have something to do with this issue
Try downgrading CWM to an earlier version such as 3.0.0.5 and then reupgrading to 3.0.0.8, I had an issue with CWM before and this fixed it.
i will try that
ive never made a back up with rom manager but it could be your problem.....
ROM manager could be your problem, it is known for unsuccessfully completely backing up or restoring ROMs. IF you are trying to use ROM manager to restore your backup try going into recovery and doing it manually. Perform a full wipe and wipe Cache and Dalvik. The go to back up and restore > restore > and find the .zip on your SD card.
If that doesn't work than try downgrading CWM and retry the restore.
If it still doesn't work it is likely ROM manager didn't successfully back it up and you will have to reflash WarmZ, at this point I would flash the newest version possible since you will be starting fresh.
And next time to remember to back up in recovery, that way you can watch it as it backs it up and watch for errors.
So whenever this official HTC Gigerbread update comes out, I'd like to try it. I made a full Titanium Backup and a full back up with CWM (with no errors) before first installing CM7. Can I just use that backup to go back to the stock ROM and then update to Gingerbread? And how can I tell if I have S On or Off? I think I turned it back on after running UnRevoked Forever, but it wasn't really that clear. I have the ability to grant SU access, that my understanding was that SU is different from S On or Off.
If your backup is the stock rom with all the bloatware then you should be able to restore it and get the update. I've heard it said that the phone also needs to be S-ON but I'm not sure, I do know you need all the bloatware though. To check S-OFF, boot into bootloader (power and volume down) and look near the top of the screen when you get to the white hboot menu, it will say S-ON or S-OFF.

Is there a way to restore, or at least read, the contacts data that were stored in the phone (not through google account) from a ClockworkMod nandroid?
Summary:
1. Went to update family member's phone to newest SprintLover's ROM from original stock rooted 3.29.
2. Backedup apps through titanium, flashed CWM 3.0.0.5 through ROM Manager.
3. Used ROM Manager to make a new backup of the 3.29 stock ROM.
4. PHONE COULD NOT REBOOT AFTER BACKUP! (Hung at the white HTC screen)
5. Figured, **** it, and installed the all-in-one radio/ROM PC36IMG.zip from SprintLover's ROM.
6. Update went fine, but realized some of the contacts were stored in PHONE and not google account.
7. Can't flash into the backup I made, it hangs at the white HTC screen.

Have you tried restoring the backup from within your recovery instead of using ROM Manager? Give it a try and see if it helps.

Thanks for the fast reply, but...
I forgot to mention that. I did clear data/cache after I updated to SprintLover's in recovery, and then tried to nandroid restore my stock 3.29 backup.
It still hung at the white HTC screen, no luck.
I have since restored the SprintLover backup.

Oh okay. If you want the original 3.29, you can download it from the link below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884060
If you don't mind a little friendly advice, I recommend that you stop using ROM Manager and flash amon RA v2.3 atop of your ClockworkMod. ROM Manager, in my opinion, has its uses, however, too many people have experience similar things as you while trying to flash roms. Anyway, take care and have a great weekend....

Thanks for the tip and link.
I use AmonRa on my phone (for at least the past 8 months), but figured I wouldn't run into trouble since Clockwork has been updated so much. However, I agree, too many issues I've had in the past and now with Clockwork.
I appreciate the original 3.29 link, but I only really need the contacts that were on my nandroid.
I guess I'll poke around and see if anything is in some sort of plain text file in the nandroid about the missing contacts. About half were in google, and half in the phone.
Hey guys, so I'm a noob and need a little bit of help. I just downloaded this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1219407
Now, what do I do with it? Also, will I lose all of my data by flashing this onto my phone? (ie: my texts and my homescreens, etc?)
Thanks!
are you rooted? if not...
http://www.jonamerica.com/technology/updated-root-the-htc-droid-incredible/
once you have clockwork recovery and all that, boot into recovery, 'flash rom from sd card' (after putting the zip file on ur sd) and ur good.
If you dont want to lose everything, after root, download titanium backup and run that. you will be able to apply most of your stuff back on once you flash a new rom.
howbout some thnx -.-'
I'll give you some thanks for that succinct explanation of steps to take.
I'm ready to root with unrevoked - guessing I should use the "flash and recover" version instead of their "forever" one?
I installed Titanium backup, which I'll use after rooting to backup pretty much everything that it can grab.
Then, I'll use the SD card-based install that you mentioned.
I've read that I should do a full wipe before installing the OTA ROMs being offered - is another tool needed for that, please?
- ooofest
You've got it. The newest version of Unrevoked has made the "forever" one obsolete.
You will be able to perform all the wipes required from within Clockwork Recovery.
Also, make a clockwork backup (nandroid) as soon as you have root, so if you run into any problems flashing roms you have something to restore.
