DSP Manager on Sense - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, in the end I like Virtuous, but one thing I *really* miss about cm6 is DSP manager. My Bluetooth is dull sounding, my earbuds are bright, and it was nice to be able to balance out the sound separately.
I tried yoinking the apk out of the cm6 update zip, but I guess it's missing something from another part of the ROM.
Anyway, this is a bit out of my territory. I feel like the answer to this would also give me a bit more insight on how it all fits together.
Any suggestions? Thanks!

Your sound quality is worse because of the bitrate cap on the bluetooth stack which is set by HTC. Nothing devs can do about it.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App

That's true, but I'm talking tonality rather than the audio resolution.
Apparently I've already used DSP manager to successfully compensate for the crummy speaker in my Bluetooth earpiece.
The question is about whether i can get DSP manager to function on the Virtuous ROM.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App

Well, I tried copying libaudio.so and libaudioflinger.so from cm6.1.1 to my system/lib (as per a post about doing this on a desire hd) and my phone wouldn't boot :/
I guess it's not that simple lol

Somebody posted a link to the flashable .zip for DSP Manager over in the EVO forum. There seemed to be mixed results on various phones, with some people having pretty serious issues, like not being able to play media files, or having bootloops, after flashing. So I've been gunshy to try it on the DZ.

I completely agree that an equalizer is needed on the phone to tweak the sound in various situations, and to personal taste. I'm surprised that 3rd party apps have not been made that do this (and I mean for sound in all apps/situation, not just a music player with an equalizer), or that HTC hasn't created a Sound Booster like they did for Sense on Windows Mobile.

I saw this post, tried to do the fundamental thing using vision ROMS, but got stuck at the boot screen.
I'm apprehensive too, but I think what I already did is probably worst case scenario, so maybe right now I'll do another nandroid and give that update a try...I'll let you know how it goes
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App

So I tried the update.zip from that epic 4g thread.
My phone worked, but songs would play 20 seconds per real second with no audio.
I opened the zip and put the libaudioflinger.so from CM6.1.1 in instead of the other one.
This time everything worked, but DSP manager didn't actually affect the audio.
Then I tried moving the libaudio.so from the cm Rom as well, but then system force closed when all booted up, leaving me with a black screen lol.
I'm all restored, but no luck with DSP manager yet.

Thanks for being the guinea pig and trying it out, and for letting me now how it went! Too bad it didn't work. I'd really like an equalizer on the phone, as well.

I have sort of good news.
I checked out the Virtuous change log for the Incredible version of the ROM which is much more developed. Rmk incorporated DSP Manager into that ROM. I can only guess (and hope) that he will do the same with the Vision version. Seems likely enough.

Yes it's working on my Htc Desire Z. I just downloaded and installed the apk. I'm using rom based on Virtuous Sense (DualSense Rom). I'm very happy beacuse of powerful bass enhancement.

Hulu audio slow, running CM6 8/14

I was using Hulu with the flash player hack, and it was working beautifully. I have been running the nightlies for a while, and I can't tell what changed. But now when I try to use hulu, the audio is so slow the voices sound possessed!
I found some users in the Incredible forum ran into the same issues when an audio fix for froyo was applied to their rom. But one user posted solving both problems.
Has anyone else run into this? If so have you found a fix?
Yeah I too have this problem

same with thedailyshow.com
Go to Google type hulu hack xda developers then look for June 17th fix. Works great on my evolution no audio problems.

That's actually where I got the hack in the first place. I un-installed it and installed it again today, and I am still getting the same result. I even flashed back to a previous nightly build, the only one I had a nand backup for, and same problem.
I did find this in the incredible forum,
just add this extension to the URL at the top showthread.php?p=7712210, and check out comment #73
His solution seemed a little over my head, but would something like this work for us?

any simple fix for evos?
Did anyone ever get a fix?? I'm having the same thing
Try turning off dsp.
Sent on the go from my HTC EVO
Disabled dsp still a no go..it's weird the ads sound fine once it gets to the actual video it messes up ..thanks for trying. Any other ideas?
I have tried everything. There is an updated "fixed-flash" in the forum where I found it the first time. I uninstalled my old one, re-booted, and then installed the new one. Couldn't get it to work.
I tried using the hulu.apk, which is really just the Hulu bookmark widget from hulu.com. I tried running it through Dolphin HD, I tried it through the stock browser, and I got the demon voices almost every time. There were few occasions where commercials would come in fine, and one time the actual clip played with normal audio, but 90% of the time, I am getting slow audio.
It seems like in the droid incredible forums, they are discussing this more. I found this from a dinc forum.
This is how I understand it. Google changed something to the audio streams for Froyo. Apparently catering to a newer technology called stagefright I believe. But, this made Pandora, Slacker, and other audio only streams sound like an old record player. So, Google released a fix. Adrynalyne posted that fix early. But it seems that this "fix" only fixes the streaming audio for those music apps and sites. But it caused a delay in the flash audio from sites like Hulu. In regards to this, there was a droid incredible forum talking about a ROM called SkyRaider. I wonder if Cyanogen used the same fix.
"SkyRaider incorporates adrynalyne's audio fix, which was released by google, which as previously mentioned fixed the AAC streams. The side effect was that Hulu and other sites were getting "devil voice" audio. So basically you could either have one or the other, not both.
Prior to the audio fix was an alternate fix where you changed a variable in the build.prop. This fixed both aac (ie. Pandora) and did not distort the sound in Hulu. The only thing affected was a slightly lower quadrant score. No decrease in performance, just a lower score. Personally, I'm still using the build.prop because I don't care about quadrant scores and my phone works properly in all aspects. Again this fix is rather old school now so maybe a better alternative has been cooked up but it's what I've been using for quite a while with no issues. "
Does anyone with more experience than me know what that means? Can this be applied to the Evo?
There don't seem to be too many people interested in this post. But for those that are. I did try editing the build.prop file using a root explorer. It didn't work. I will post if I find anything that does.
Yea I've been trying to fix this for 2 weeks now..I even applied skyraders fix to see if would work crashed my phone..I keep posting and also no buddy seems like there interested in it..i would love tofix this problem cause now it's become a obsession..I've tried and have gotten nowhere..ill give 10 bucks to anyone that can fix this for me!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7880766&postcount=6
After researching this for a while, I've found the only way to do this is to disable Stagefright. Hopefully this won't be a permanent thing. Follow the instructions in the above link. Pandora and Hulu seem to BOTH be functioning properly on the newest Cyanogen nightly after applying this fix.
The Cause of this issue?
I thought I post what results in Hulu sound running slow for me. Hulu works great when I first flash MIKSHIFT v1.0 for the HTC EVO Shift.
When I start having the slow sound on Hulu is right after I do a wipe of the user data (System Reset). It does not matter if you do the system reset from within "Settings/SD & phone storage/Factory data reset" or if you run this from within clockworkmod recovery.
After the reset and installing the huku fix apx the issue with the sound appears.
So it seems that doing the reset is causing something to be changed that causes this issue.
Please let me know if anyone has found a solution for this.

Pandora radio

Hey guys any of you use pandora? If so do you use the widget? I had plenty of android devices prior to the g2 (eris, droid 1, cliq, nexus one, hd2 on android) and all of them had the widget to put on one of the home screens. With the g2 however I cannot find it!? I did send an email to the dev but I wanted to see if any of you can see the widget.
Thanks for your help.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
It's because you have Pandora installed to your SD card. For the widget to appear you have to have it installed on the phone. You can't just move it to the phone from the SD card. You need to uninstall it then reinstall it so it installs onto the phone for the ability to see the widget.
That did the trick thanks!
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I realize that this is a completely useless response, but the Panodra widget shows up on my G2 in the exact same manner as it did on my G1. Long press, widgets and scroll down and hit the Pandora icon and there it is..... Wish I could help more, but that's all I got.
EDIT.... good God I'm slow.... and now it's making me wait 5 minutes to add this edit....
My Pandora sounded like crap so I un-installed it. I like Slacker better anyways...lol
I agree Pandora does sound like crap especially compared to last.fm but last.fm won't play an entire song without skipping to the next! What's the deal with that?
Seems you guys pandora sounds bad but I play it through earbuds and I can't complain. Maybe I'm deaf.
Sent from my G2
Pandora sounding bad is an issue with Android 2.2 Froyo and the AAC+ audio.. will hopefully be fixed in a future OTA.
Info here:
http://blog.pandora.com/faq/contents/10002.html
Also make sure you go to pandora preferences and set the audio quality to high. Its on low by default.
I started a thread like this on the other Sub-Forum for the G2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8596795#post8596795
I e-mailed both HTC and Pandora and all they do is point fingers at each other.
I really hope a fix is in the works. I'm gonna email HTC again and let them now what the Pandora rep told me by e-mail.

[Q] Fm radio on our G2

Now that we can flash kernel does this mean we can have fm radio working? I know u need to compile it and add the support for it.... was just thinking it would be nice to have the n1,inc ect.
very good question
very good question
I am interested too
confirm something please!
There is an FM radio in the ROMS that have Sense (Desire Z) that works with the G2. I have seen several people asking Cyanogen if it will eventually be included in CM6 however I have not seen a definitive response.
I don't see why anyone would CHOOSE commercial FM radio when they have 8GB+ for music they can choose. The radio < the internet and any kind of music you want. FM functionality seems like a non-issue.
Some people like to listen to the radio. I would love my phone to have the functionality. I flashed a sense ROM but don't like the feel, the only thing I liked was the FM radio. If CM puts it in his build I will be a happy man!!

It's called CHOICE for a reason. I agree, commercial radio pretty much sucks, but an FM radio can be handy in areas where you get no signal (maybe at work or school?) and want to listen to something other than the audio you have stored on your phone.
The Sense ROMs have the FM radio app in there. You can always just do a NAND backup and try one out.

There isn't just music on the radio, you know.
Clear channel has one radio show I like to listen to and the iheartradio app is crap. FM would kick-ass
have you tried the tune in radio app, its what i use when i dont feel like loading pandora
I tried the fm radio app in the virtuous rom, and it worked great. Tried copying the app to the sdcard and installing on cm6.1, but it wouldn't install.
I also tried tune in radio. Seems to work a lot better than iheartradio, but I guess they can't carry clearchannel stations.

I have tune-in but they don't have clear channel stations.
Now i just wish we could make an AM radio app. Considering the fm radio uses headphones for an antenna would it be possible to make a am antenna? Or is it also a matter of tunning to am stations?

At the time of posting this, CM6.1 (RC2) doesn't have an FM radio app.

In response to all the "but why would you want FM?" posts I always see when this issue gets brought up:
The big reason for me is my gym. They have monitors at the front set to different TV channels, and an FM frequency listed below each one. To get the audio, you just tune to that station. I'd like to be able to get that audio back (my old MP3 player did FM) but not so much that I'm willing to switch ROMs. Here's hoping it is something the CM team is working on!

Windows Media

I'm rooted now, but tentative about trying ROMs without finding out about why WMA and WMV files work on my Dinc2. They DO work on the stock Dinc2; They did NOT play on my rooted D1.
I know a bit about Linux and the issues with driver and codec licensing. Will custom ROMs come with the codec and player to support these files? Or is this something nice that Verizon does for us ... licensing the codecs?
Why do I care? My voice mail service now emails messages to me -- in win media format.

since youre rooted, just boot into clockwork and make a backup of your current rom. then flash a new rom, and check to see if it plays wma and wmv. if not, either try another rom, or go back into clockwork and restore your backup of your original rom. I really dont see why people are so nervous about trying new roms, devs make it easy to go back to what works in case you have a problem with something.
I should of expected that answer. I toyed with many ROMs on the ole D1. This thing is just so shiny.
Still, if anybody has looked into this, please let me know.
My wife has an X unrooted and it also plays Windows media. Maybe I'm making all this up and the issue was somehow the D1. It just seems there should be a software-related answer.
Anyway...I'll find candidate ROM over the weekend and post my findings.

I just use VPlayer. It plays pretty much any files I have and it's easier than trying to get a stock ROM to play a format that's not natively supported. Then you're free to try/use whatever ROM you want.
I working with the CM7 beta and I am having mixed success.
First, it plays my voicemail. But I was wrong... My voicemail comes in a WAV file. CM7 plays the WAV file.
However it does not play a WMA file that I had ripped from a CD.
If I need that old CD I invest in the player you mentioned.

[Q] creating a rom

im wanting to remove apps like, facebook, friend stream and all the usual boring and pointless apps.

I really don't see the need for both beats and dsp manager (especially since both offer very little noticeable difference to the end-user experience... be honest, now ).
Also, think twice about adding big bloaty apps (like Titanium) especially if you are de-odexing the ROM. Internal space on this phone is at a premium. If you must include it, throw it in /data/apps... at least users can easily rip it out if they so choose.
Good luck, and lookin' forward to your work.
