[Q] Fm radio on our G2 - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Now that we can flash kernel does this mean we can have fm radio working? I know u need to compile it and add the support for it.... was just thinking it would be nice to have the n1,inc ect.

very good question
very good question
I am interested too
confirm something please!

There is an FM radio in the ROMS that have Sense (Desire Z) that works with the G2. I have seen several people asking Cyanogen if it will eventually be included in CM6 however I have not seen a definitive response.

I don't see why anyone would CHOOSE commercial FM radio when they have 8GB+ for music they can choose. The radio < the internet and any kind of music you want. FM functionality seems like a non-issue.

Some people like to listen to the radio. I would love my phone to have the functionality. I flashed a sense ROM but don't like the feel, the only thing I liked was the FM radio. If CM puts it in his build I will be a happy man!!

It's called CHOICE for a reason. I agree, commercial radio pretty much sucks, but an FM radio can be handy in areas where you get no signal (maybe at work or school?) and want to listen to something other than the audio you have stored on your phone.
The Sense ROMs have the FM radio app in there. You can always just do a NAND backup and try one out.

There isn't just music on the radio, you know.

Clear channel has one radio show I like to listen to and the iheartradio app is crap. FM would kick-ass

have you tried the tune in radio app, its what i use when i dont feel like loading pandora

I tried the fm radio app in the virtuous rom, and it worked great. Tried copying the app to the sdcard and installing on cm6.1, but it wouldn't install.
I also tried tune in radio. Seems to work a lot better than iheartradio, but I guess they can't carry clearchannel stations.

I have tune-in but they don't have clear channel stations.

Now i just wish we could make an AM radio app. Considering the fm radio uses headphones for an antenna would it be possible to make a am antenna? Or is it also a matter of tunning to am stations?

What G2 roms have fm radio? Links please?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App

No links sorry but any sense rom will. Ie virtous and i think cm6 has it as well.

Just use the rom manager from the market. It has vituous listed and will install the full rom for you.

At the time of posting this, CM6.1 (RC2) doesn't have an FM radio app.

In response to all the "but why would you want FM?" posts I always see when this issue gets brought up:
The big reason for me is my gym. They have monitors at the front set to different TV channels, and an FM frequency listed below each one. To get the audio, you just tune to that station. I'd like to be able to get that audio back (my old MP3 player did FM) but not so much that I'm willing to switch ROMs. Here's hoping it is something the CM team is working on!

Pandora radio

Hey guys any of you use pandora? If so do you use the widget? I had plenty of android devices prior to the g2 (eris, droid 1, cliq, nexus one, hd2 on android) and all of them had the widget to put on one of the home screens. With the g2 however I cannot find it!? I did send an email to the dev but I wanted to see if any of you can see the widget.
Thanks for your help.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
It's because you have Pandora installed to your SD card. For the widget to appear you have to have it installed on the phone. You can't just move it to the phone from the SD card. You need to uninstall it then reinstall it so it installs onto the phone for the ability to see the widget.
That did the trick thanks!

I realize that this is a completely useless response, but the Panodra widget shows up on my G2 in the exact same manner as it did on my G1. Long press, widgets and scroll down and hit the Pandora icon and there it is..... Wish I could help more, but that's all I got.
EDIT.... good God I'm slow.... and now it's making me wait 5 minutes to add this edit....
My Pandora sounded like crap so I un-installed it. I like Slacker better anyways...lol
I agree Pandora does sound like crap especially compared to last.fm but last.fm won't play an entire song without skipping to the next! What's the deal with that?
Seems you guys pandora sounds bad but I play it through earbuds and I can't complain. Maybe I'm deaf.
Sent from my G2
Pandora sounding bad is an issue with Android 2.2 Froyo and the AAC+ audio.. will hopefully be fixed in a future OTA.
Info here:
http://blog.pandora.com/faq/contents/10002.html
Also make sure you go to pandora preferences and set the audio quality to high. Its on low by default.
I started a thread like this on the other Sub-Forum for the G2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8596795#post8596795
I e-mailed both HTC and Pandora and all they do is point fingers at each other.
I really hope a fix is in the works. I'm gonna email HTC again and let them now what the Pandora rep told me by e-mail.

DSP Manager on Sense

So, in the end I like Virtuous, but one thing I *really* miss about cm6 is DSP manager. My Bluetooth is dull sounding, my earbuds are bright, and it was nice to be able to balance out the sound separately.
I tried yoinking the apk out of the cm6 update zip, but I guess it's missing something from another part of the ROM.
Anyway, this is a bit out of my territory. I feel like the answer to this would also give me a bit more insight on how it all fits together.
Any suggestions? Thanks!
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Your sound quality is worse because of the bitrate cap on the bluetooth stack which is set by HTC. Nothing devs can do about it.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
That's true, but I'm talking tonality rather than the audio resolution.
Apparently I've already used DSP manager to successfully compensate for the crummy speaker in my Bluetooth earpiece.
The question is about whether i can get DSP manager to function on the Virtuous ROM.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Well, I tried copying libaudio.so and libaudioflinger.so from cm6.1.1 to my system/lib (as per a post about doing this on a desire hd) and my phone wouldn't boot :/
I guess it's not that simple lol
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Somebody posted a link to the flashable .zip for DSP Manager over in the EVO forum. There seemed to be mixed results on various phones, with some people having pretty serious issues, like not being able to play media files, or having bootloops, after flashing. So I've been gunshy to try it on the DZ.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=795233
I completely agree that an equalizer is needed on the phone to tweak the sound in various situations, and to personal taste. I'm surprised that 3rd party apps have not been made that do this (and I mean for sound in all apps/situation, not just a music player with an equalizer), or that HTC hasn't created a Sound Booster like they did for Sense on Windows Mobile.

Loving the Totoro
I saw this post, tried to do the fundamental thing using vision ROMS, but got stuck at the boot screen.
I'm apprehensive too, but I think what I already did is probably worst case scenario, so maybe right now I'll do another nandroid and give that update a try...I'll let you know how it goes
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
So I tried the update.zip from that epic 4g thread.
My phone worked, but songs would play 20 seconds per real second with no audio.
I opened the zip and put the libaudioflinger.so from CM6.1.1 in instead of the other one.
This time everything worked, but DSP manager didn't actually affect the audio.
Then I tried moving the libaudio.so from the cm Rom as well, but then system force closed when all booted up, leaving me with a black screen lol.
I'm all restored, but no luck with DSP manager yet.

Are you implying that my photo looks like some kind of cartoon? ;-)
Thanks for being the guinea pig and trying it out, and for letting me now how it went! Too bad it didn't work. I'd really like an equalizer on the phone, as well.
I have sort of good news.
I checked out the Virtuous change log for the Incredible version of the ROM which is much more developed. Rmk incorporated DSP Manager into that ROM. I can only guess (and hope) that he will do the same with the Vision version. Seems likely enough.

Yes it's working on my Htc Desire Z. I just downloaded and installed the apk. I'm using rom based on Virtuous Sense (DualSense Rom). I'm very happy beacuse of powerful bass enhancement.

[Q] How to change Radio FM app in CM7?

I've installed CM7 and I don't like the FM Radio app, I can't listen to my favourite radio only because it is on 97,4 frequency and FM app works only for xx,1 xx,3 xx,5 xx,7 and xx,9. There is no autoscan option. Is there any other application that will work as old Radio FM from 2.2? Or is there any way to restore that radio?
Market?

I'm also looking for Radio app like HTC. But it seems no such app for CM7.
Go to the market. You wont find an app like the sense one unless someone has made one which I doubt it.

FM Tuner App?

My workplace is now enforcing no more streaming radio at the office. I have a Desire HD, and I remember back when I had stock Sense, there was an FM Radio app, because this device has a built-in FM tuner. But my latest ROM, Synerge's 4.2.1, doesn't seem to have a tuner app.
Now of course, I am not talking about streaming internet radio (TuneIn, etc.), but just a regular land based FM radio app.
Thanks.
There is an app on the play store called 'Spirit FM' Radio'. I have not tried it, but I always see it being recommended by other users on these forums, unfortunately it isn't free though
Sent from my Desire HD using xda app-developers app
Yeah I'm hoping there's a free option before I go down that route. I recall the FM tuner wasn't great anyway, so I more just want to try it out. Kind of surprised no free apps for a simple function that comes free on certain phones.
Unfortunately no, there's nothing. Not just synergye's ROM, but CM doesn't have an FM app too. It's there in CM7 Gingerbread, but wasn't forward ported since CM9.

Hard to develop
It's pretty difficult to develop tuner apps because google does not support fm radio.
So every phone manufacturer uses their individual hardware which moreover can change between different phone models

found alternative FM app for moto g

I have been looking for a different FM radio app for the moto g and I finally found on that has more features then the stock on. Apparently this one is included on the boost version but the play store say not available for any other carriers. So I figured id share the one I found.
It is call nextradio and this is version 1.0.357 which is the newest available as if now.
Enjoy!!!

Does not save station list and missing some frequency. Full of Advertisements.
No replacement for stock app
Country : India
Does this support RDS?
Why not just use Tune In Radio?
I have really found this app useful. Thanks a lot

I was searching for a solution to hear radio through the speaker too, and found the solution. Use this widget to toggle between headphone and speaker output! Works perfectly. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chislonchow.toggleheadp
If you are using Action Launcher you can create a shutter on the FMradio icon and place the widget there, so you have the toggle you need in one place.
Works great, without replacing the great stock app.

Great solution...many people were looking for it.....even on g+ and stuff...Motorola officially apologized and said the feature can't be implemented due to some em wave interfere thingy.... Make a tutorial on app forum

The App (Next Radio) mentioned on Top is quite good but it didn't search for Even Frequencies in INDIA like 102.6, 104, 106.4 so on & so far.
Does any one knows FM Radio app that works on MOTO G {UNROOTED}.
i also triedd Sprit 1 - it app doesn't even work at least Next Radio App is playing Odd Radio Frequency Stations in INDIA like 91.10, 93.50 so on & so far.
Please mail me link or app name if you get to know:

Nice App, Interface is not good and does not save stations but good to have alternative which can play through speakers.
I am trying to make MOTO E's FM Radio app work on Moto G as it has option to play through speaker.
isnt it a shame that moto e has play via speaker option, but moto g doesnt
You can use the App Hf button.
Guys it does save station.
Go to Settings
Then interface
Use Basic Interface & Tap on your Favourite Station
Only Problem with this App is that Even Frequency Channel in India Like 104, 102.6 are Missing
Other wise it's a Great App For UNROOTED Users
Multiple station lists
I'd like an FM radio app to save multiple lists of frequencies/stations found based on GPS/Location, as I have to rescan in the morning/evening at the start/end of my daily commute and loose all stations....
