Random Settings Button Click

I have found a bug, I am not sure if it would be considered hardware or software. I live in an area with poor cell reception. When my E4GT loses cell signal, the settings button starts clicking randomly at a rapid pace. This has been incredibly obnoxious. Especially when driving and using a GPS app. I can absolutely confirm this happens when cellphone signal goes to zero bars. Something that frequently happens in my house. I also took a ride around the block to known dead-zones. I saw an older topic relating to this same issue. But I wanted to kick start a new discussion.
My question to general public, does this happen to you, and is there a fix other than trying to get a replacement phone? I would not be able to reproduce the bug at my local sprint store since they have full cell and 4g reception.
My question to any developers, would this be something fixable in a ROM/Kernel? I know you have some control over the hardware.:fingers-crossed:

I am running FH13 stock rooted

I am only going to bump this once. I am now running CM9. It does it in on this ROM as well. Hopefully someone here has some info, otherwise I will continue to search the Internets.

I fixed my problem by talking the phone apart, down to 3 pieces, the bezel, motherboard, and screen. I then put all the pieces back together, without over-tightening the screws. The phone works perfectly now. I am thinking some portion of the phone was stressed during the original manufacturing, causing the weird menu button glitches. I used a number 00 phillips, and a plastic pry bar meant for taking apart electronics.

There is the teardown. I should stress that I did not strip it bare. I hope this helps someone in the future. Also, remember to remove any microSD card, and keep it removed during the teardown and reassembly. I broke mine in two.

WiFi is gone

I've had this tablet (SM-P600) for almost a year now & it has worked perfectly. Over the last week or so, the WiFi has been randomly turning on & off. Not just losing signal, but actually showing as off in the menus. As of this morning, wifi will not turn on at all. Just says "turning on" on the screen & sits. Never gets to the next screen showing all the open networks.
Everything is fully backed up so I went into recovery tonight. Did the full factory reset and wipe procedures. Tablet boots back like it is as supposed to, but wifi wont turn on when getting to that screen in the initial setup.
Tablet has been well cared in a case, not dropped, and not gotten wet. However I am still positive this is a hardware issue.
Any ideas for things I might try? Help!! Thx in advance

I've the same problem with my galaxy note 10.1 2014 edition SM-P605 :crying: Still haven't found solution

I am almost 100% certain this is some type of hardware problem. I tried flashing about 3 different ROM's and 3 different kernels, all of which successfully booted up. I finished by doing a 100% re-wipe (data & system included) & reinstalling a pure stock kernel and firmware. On every single revision, the words "turning on" would appear when clicking the WiFi option, but then it would get stuck. Message would eventually clear & I could continue using everything on the tablet . . . . . . . just no WiFi or Bluetooth functionality.
Final attempt was to gently remove the back cover. When lightly tapping around different points on the MoBo, the names of my local wireless networks would OCCASIONALLY appear. At one point they locked in & I really thought I had it. However, the whole thing disconnected again after a few minutes & I was back to square 1. :crying:
I never could figure out the perfect sweet spot to pinpoint the problem. My guess now is either a chip or ribbon cable that isn't seated properly, but I poked and pushed (gently!) on everything that was visible without removing any hardware other than just the back cover. Does anyone have a link to the layout of the motherboard that shows EXACTLY which piece is the WiFi/BT module? I did find an online disassembly tutorial with a random Google search, but for some reason they failed to identify this particular module.
Sorry for the long post, but I feel I am SO CLOSE to figuring this out once and for all. Just need a little more tech help to push across the goal line. Thanks!!

Update:
After a little more poking and prodding on the MoBo, I'm starting to see activity. Tablet will finally connect again, but will only hold the connection for 10-15 seconds and then drop back out. A few seconds later the cycle repeats.
I really wish I could find a good hi-res photo of the motherboard to help. HAS to be a simple loose connection, or maybe a not-so-good solder point somewhere???

never heard of 'em, is it a cheapo tablet? In my country there's a store of them (Allwinner 6.6" tablet with microSD slot, 2gb internal w/o bluetooth WIFI ONLY INTENDED FOR CASUAL GAMING, or should I call it kids only tablet, RM130 ($35))
That thing has a cheap plasticy housing, unneat design but has a pretty good performance (it plays dead trigger pretty well)

SM-P600 is Samsung's actual model number for the WiFi only version of the 2014 Galaxy Note 10.1. Most definitely NOT a cheapo tablet!! Although this wifi issue makes me wonder. I had the functionality back for about a day or so, and then it disappeared again. This has to be a simple case of a loose connector, but I sure can't find it. Ugh. Utterly frustrating.

What firmware version are you using because I am having the same issue. I manually updated to the september update (P600UEUCNI1) for the wifi version and started experiencing the same issue.

Same here. I think it's an issue with NII firmware.

*****PARTIAL solution*****
I have proven 100% that mine is problematic hardware . . . . . NOT software or kernel. For the time being my WiFi is back up & seemingly stable. I had to remove the back from the tablet for the fix. You have to be *extremely* careful, but it just snaps off with no screws. Lots of YouTube videos if you choose to attempt, but please don't say I didn't give you fair warning!
The reason I say partial solution is that I haven't pinpointed the exact location of the short. I am 99% sure it is somewhere on the extreme upper left hand corner as you face the front of the tablet. There are a couple of ribbon connectors in that area, and a few snap on type connectors that look like little motherboard chips. After gently poking & prodding the ribbons and disconnecting & reconnecting the snap connectors (being CAREFUL; I cannot stress this enough), my WiFi reappeared.
My final tip is to keep the screen on the page that shows the list of available networks. If you are having the same problem I was, this screen will just show "turning on" and nothing else for the WiFi. While poking around, I would occasionally see the list of networks pop up & then go back off. I finally hit whatever the magic spot is, and the networks held. Snapped the back cover on again, and I've been online for probably 4-5 days now without a single hiccup.
And before I get flamed, I know how dangerous it is to poke around with a powered, exposed tablet. There are probably certain points that could make connection and FRY the entire thing in an instant. I was just willing to take the risk as my tablet was useless without network capability. I had nothing to lose. I would recommend at least trying to poke & prod with the tablet OFF a few times to be safe, but I personally got tired of rebooting over & over & over & over. My luck sucks. With the tablet ON, I was at least able to monitor when something was happening.

I bought my Note in March of this year, I started having the WiFi issue after the April firmware update. At first I would get the Connected to... message at random times, even though I had full signal strength. At the end of September, I started losing connection at random times and in the middle of October, I had to send it in to Best Buy's Geek Squad service to have them repair it. It is a hardware issue, as the no matter what firmware version I use, it will never connect to the router. I know it, Geek Squad is aware of it, as I have sent it in for repair twice so far. I would have to send it in a third time before they will think about replacing it with a new Note. I will admit, that before I updated it in May, I did root it, because I tried to remove the Business Week+ and New York Times apps, as I never used either one of them. I tried disabling them, only to have them reactivate and update themselves.

Damn, what I read here is not good news. My SM-P605's died yesterday.

Hardware issue for sure. Same problem with mine. Opened the back case, disconnected the upper right (as your looking at the screen) small ribbon, reconnected, and boom, perfect wifi once again!

The EZ Package Disabler app is fine for debloating rooted and non-rooted devices with Touchwiz roms. It uses Knox, so that mustn't be removed. The apps are still on the system partition, but are completely dead now. While other apps, especually for non-rooted devices kill the system apps during boit and try to prevent their restart. But during boot the whole stuff is active until the app kicks in, allowing the system apps to receive updates, communicate, spam free flash mem etc.
The app wirks the same way on my rooted P605 and unrooted S5. And gives a reason to buy Samsung stuff, unlike Touchwiz and its bloatware. As far as custom roms go, i found that of my old LG L9 much better. Even if the early roms were AOSP 4.0.4 based, then 4.1.3, they had already had the fresh & bright look & feel of the future Kitkat, and a few useful enhancements like an integrated backup tool, which was more simple, but for me as useful as TB.
As for the main problem here, i think using a case with a hardened backside, and not one if these with a big hole(though being better than nothing), prevents oroblens like battery, display and seemingly wifi connectors loosening. Or bad solder joints. The backplate of the note gives thru any pressure on the back, especially in the middle area. It then rests on the battery, metal shields, connectors and stuff. This seems to generate enough wear over time for problems. The same back plate on a much smaller device(my S5, but that has a subchassis covering the innards, too) would be much stiffer, and my 7" tablet has an aluminium unibody case, such trouble is unknown there.

same problem here... I used to own a SM-600 purchased in 2014 unfortunately I lost it... (the first tablet worked without any proble until I lost it...) than I managed to found the same modell brand new on amazon... it worked for 2 weeks and 2 days ago wifi died... but funny enough not straight away.... first couple time just switched off the wifi... I managed to switch simply back... next day it only worked if restarted the device... now factory reset nothing... If it is hardware related why worked 2 weeks witout any problem? If it is software related why not working after software reset? Only installed a few apps from the store.. the device did not overheated or physically damaged...

Since I bought this a long time ago, I have to pay for the repair. I just want to know if it is worth it. How much did it cost you (if you bothered)?

In my opinion it would be foolish to spend a dime to repair a 4 year old tablet. If the battery is original, it may well be near the end of its useful life as well. FWIW, I bought this tablet used about 8 months ago and have not experienced this wifi problem.

It's still so well equipped, that you can't simply replace with a modern entry level or midline tablet, but with a top of the line one, so a repair is well an option.
I just don't have a clue about the SoCs performance level. To which current ones it would equal and where things get better. I can only compare it to my similarly(Snapdragon 801) equipped phone and my cheap 7" tablet's quad core Mediatek SoC, and that is considerably worse, though being three years newer.

[FIX] GPS issues, antenna cases only E98X, requires disassembly.

I thought this was worth sharing, this is my second thread ever on XDA and hope it helps somebody.
Quick story about my case:
I tried software fixes, ROMs, and made a lot of reading, when I finally figured it could be an antenna issue, I decided to give myself a try on my cellphone repair skills, turns out I turned a “nearly dead” GPS taking 10 minutes to lock into a “better than average” GPS taking 20 seconds to lock. Time taken for the task, 15 minutes, time suffering from bad GPS signal, 1 year, go figure.
Let’s see if you are a candidate to try this solution:
- You must be sure this isn’t a software related issue (i.e. my GPS works with X rom but it doesn’t with Y rom, that would certainly be a software issue).
- You CAN get a GPS lock but the signal is weak (i.e. constantly dropping signal in an area where you are sure another phone works fine) or GPS locks takes up to 5 minutes (and you already tried a software fix to speed up GPS lock).
- You’re phone is relatively old (i.e. it was bought when it came out, although I’m sure the quantity is low, I assume there are still E98X phones which are brand new and I would not recommend disassembling a brand new phone).
- You have experience opening cellphones (i.e. experience using small phillips screwdriver, gently popping frames/housing/covers, putting back in position plastic buttons before re-assebly).
Before we start, quick explanation on what may be happening to your phone if you are a candidate:
- Presumably, the GPS antenna (and Bluetooth, 3G/4G as well) is making poor contact with the springs on your phone.
- This phone uses contact springs for pretty much everything (see attached picture for springs locations of antennas), so these springs and/or the antenna contacts eventually bent away from each other and lower your GPS, Bluetooth, 3G/4G signals.
Here is what you need to do:
- Remove the back cover, and remove the back frame (See the following video from minute 0:00 to 1:50 for disassembly of backframe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9OJRtf39QA).
- Inspect every spring and antenna contacts (see attached pictures for antenna springs and pad locations), make sure they are not rusted or damaged, else you need a replacement part for it (for antenna pads, you may want to clean those with isopropyl alcohol if you have some).
- Using a soft, thin, *plastic* tool (thinner than a credit card, but sturdier than paper), lift every spring you see up to 10 degrees (see attached picture for reference) and wiggle it up and down to force it to stay tilted up about 10 degrees (don’t force it up more than 15 degrees when wiggling or you risk to break the spring, there are quite a few of springs, I remember at least 5 pairs, so make sure you get them all done).
- Revert all disassembly made (See the following video from minute 6:32 to 7:51 for reassembly https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QxLa5rXX7Y), and VOILA!! your GPS signal came to life again (and hopefully your Bluetooth and 3G/4G are enjoying the new perks too!)
-Additionally, better 3G/4G signal does save battery, your cellphone amplifiers require less work and produces less heating too.

UPDATE:
See main post, I got a picture from somewhere else for the spring locations.
Actually my friend, that picture only shows the pads for the antennas, try to match it with your phone and see where they contact, these are going to be the springs, they don't look like spiral springs, these are other type of springs which I don't recall the name but they are more like a V shape, and one of the sides is attached to the board and the other one "springs" up and down, let me know if you got it or I will open my phone again, just for you! (no kidding)
Also, if I were you I would try to do the same for all pairs of springs I see on the motherboard, there is a pair for the speakerphone and one more down the board for something else.

GPS finally fixing
Thank you so much for this post. Before this solution, I tried different roms, gps fixing apps, disabling carrierIQ, editing the gps.conf file to add "better" servers, etc. This is the only solution that really worked. Now I am getting a GPS fix in 10 to 15 seconds where before it was up to a minute or more. I have an LG E980 (ATT Version).
As directed, I turned off the phone, removed the rear case back, removed the battery+sd card+sim card, removed the screws in the back panel of the phone and then separated the back panel from the front panel to expose the circuit boards and spring contacts. Then, I cleaned all the spring contacts and their mating flat contacts on the back panel with alcohol. Then I bent all of the spring contacts up slightly, re-seated the back panel making sure the side buttons were in the correct place (I do not believe the quickmemo and power buttons are interchangeable even though they are the same size fyi), and then secured the screws back in place.

Way to go buddy, I'm glad I could help you and that you were able to follow those horrendous instructions, I can't be sure on your case since yours wasn't as bad as mine, but on my case it also improved 4G reception overall, these antennas are used for pretty much everything so it would only be logical to get better signal on all the services, this is a "must" service on old E98X phones, perhaps nearly half of the GPS and bluetooth issues on the forum are due to this plus a weak or faulty software filtering not helping.

any info how to increase the wifi antenna? could this be the white cable?

I've quit using my OG Pro because the GPS is so poor. Hard to get a fix and drops constantly. Glad I stumbled on this, and will give it a try.
Can you point out which springs are specific to the GPS antenna? I suppose I can try to work with all the springs, but with my luck, I 'll break something that was working fine.

I don't know which ones they are. I did all of them. They are a lever type spring contact so it is hard to break them. Just do so lightly.

Just did this, really improved the speed and reliability of everything- gps, wifi, etc. Thanks.
A quick tip for those doing this the first time. be careful of the buttons. I've taken apart my optimus g pro a few times now, and those dern things like to fly out of you're not careful when taking it apart. Also, when putting back together, use a small piece of scotch tape on the exterior of the frame to hold the buttons in place when you put the frame back in place. make sure the tabs of the tape stay on the outside, and pul them gently as you snap the screen back on. It's easier to have the frame on the table on put the screen down onto the frame when done this way, and save those dern buttons from coming out of their slots.

I have two OG Pro (E980) developed same broken GPS issue.
Now, I think the problem is the two soft contact pads, when I bent little bit, the GPS 's issue got fixed.
Also, the method not to improve any 4g/Wi-Fi/Bluetooth.
LG made such low quality contact PINs

Two years have passed and this thread is still helping people with their now "ancient" G Pros. My problem was that the coax cable had popped loose. Still I went ahead and re-tensioned all the contact springs. GPS is now functioning like new. Thanks to all who contributed.

Screw mix - system use 80% of battery now

First you can all say i screwed up and i am stupid.... i assume and i feel stupid, trust me !
I don't know anything about electronic or programming as you but i want to share and maybe find a solution with you for my problem.
3 days ago, I wanted to clean my lens because some dust were on it, so i put out the 2 screws around the lens... of course i did not see they were different...because i am stupid with it ! when i clean it i mixed the two screws so the big one went to deep behind the plastic and make a perforation on a component.
I join a picture to let you see a small hole in the blue part on the right of the camera lens !
Since, the battery is down in 3hours. Android tell me the system use around 80% of the battery and it is warm on the plastic around the lens.
The wifi never want to be put on and the bluetooth too (the MAC WIFI is now : 02:00:00:00:00:00)
The telephone and the 4G are working perfectly
I tried to put a small electric scotch on the hole but this don't change anything.
I just want to use this phone as a phone now, i don't care if the bluetooth, the wifi or the camera is working well or not at all....
Is it possible with the hidden menu to disconnect this component???
Do you have a solution which allowed me to continue using this phone which is perfect otherwise?

I have a vs985 & yours is a d855, but I think the boards are similar enough to try and help.
It's not a component you hit - it's just tape. I opened up my phone and tested that spot on the board with a DMM and it looks like a ground plane underneath the tape you punctured. That in itself shouldn't be causing your problems, but if your screw went through the ground plane & into the board it may be shorting something out which could be causing your issues. If that's the case I don't know if your phone is salvageable.
1)Try removing the back cover and see if the issues go away. There is a possibility that when you re-assembled the phone something ended up out of place/off its contacts.
2)Also, I'd take a closer look and see how deep the screw went. Maybe take a fine tip tweezer and see if there is some of that ground plane mashed in the hole & try to gently peel it out.
3)And, of course, try resetting your phone or even re-flashing at some point - just so you can know for sure you didn't have some weird software glitch that just happened to show up after you opened your phone.

GT-I9195: Where is the GPS antenna/connector?

I have an old s4mini (LTE) which I have been using as car and bike GPS for many yrs. The GPS was always great but last autumn it stopped working. I put it in the drawer and have been using my old ASUS Z00ED since then which has a better performance, a larger screen and a perfectly working GPS.
Still, the ASUS is way too big to use it as bike GPS while the s4mini's size is perfect, so I want to revive it.
Currently, the phone sees some satellites (with a very bad signal strength or SNR or whatever it is) but is unable to use them, even after trying to get a fix for a long time. The screenshot was taken on my balcony outside where my other phones easily get > 10 sats fix. I am quite sure this is a hardware problem as there was no software update before the problem occured. The phone then was on the latest official LOS 14.1, now I have test installed AOKP 2019-10-25 with no change. It may be a corrosion problem as the phone lay in the mud and rain for an hour after a severe car accident, but after cleaning it, it had worked for 2,5 years without any issues...
So now my question: Where is the s4mini's GPS connector and antenna? I would like to try and fix these. I have a second s4mini with cracked screen which could serve as a spare parts donator.

I had also an bad GPS receiption and I "cleaned" with a screwdriver the part at 2:40 in the video. Afterwards it was shiny again. Also I "cleaned" the part (of clips) on the board and I did also lift up the board a bit and put a piece of paper behind it so (I was hoping) I get an better connection between those two parts. I am pretening that that helped.

Also I "cleaned" the part (of clips) on the board and I did also lift up the board a bit and put a piece of paper behind it so (I was hoping) I get an better connection between those two parts. I am pretening that that helped.

Thanks, at the moment I have it back working. I'm afraid the problem was more due to the GPS rollover than due to the antenna.

I've heard the GPS Rollover isn't an issue on most devices, and a lot of patches are softwrae based. The epoch is set entirely in software iirc.
