How do I backup my radios before flashing myn's 5? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay I need to know how to backup my radios if something goes wrong. I would also like to know if myn's 5 is ready for testing. Thanks in advance.
from my EVO using XDA app.

Maybe this didn't aswer your question, but I just finished flashing Myn's RL5 without upgrading the radios.. if you flash a custom kernel (one in a few that myn's list in his OP) and DID NOT boot between flashing the ROM and the kernel, you can used RL5 just fine with the old radio.
I think the new HTC kernel that need radio update.

Okay soo you are saying that if I flash myn's rom and DON'T reboot after flashing a kernel then I won't have to worry about updating the radios?

no..
do this :
1. wipe everything
2. flash myn's rl5
3. flash custom kernel
4. reboot
voila.. rl5 without upgrading radio..
btw, don't forget to do nandroid backup before doing that..

Thanks for the assistance. I tried the rom for ten minutes. It is was not that good. I blame the kernal that I used.

Try Netarchy's 4.3-havs-more with or without sbc.
Just fyi, i tried overclocking these and it messes with the phone not writing pictures to the sd. The first set of pics are fine, but once you connect to the computer and save them, the rest of the pics you take show up in the phone but not on the sd. It took me forever to figure this out, lol.
Good luck on finding the right match.

Unable to flash any roms except cm6

I am unable to flash any roms except cm6 ( I can also flash any nightlies. )
This is driving me crazy. I have tried to flash fresh 3.2 to no avail. I have also tried to install the new virus rom. I attempted to install the rooted version off the newest ota with the same results.
After each attempt the result is the same. It will just hang on the HTC evo 4g screen.
I have downloaded the roms a few times each to ensure they were completed correctly.
I have pulled the battery and waited.
I have deleted all data / dalvik / Cache several times in a row.
I have attempted to flash using a different version (earlier) of clockwork with the same results.
I even attempted to flash with RA recovery. Same results.
I am completely lost as to why I can only flash cm6 roms
Please let me know any suggestions.

From what I have read...................
You need to restore a 2.1 or a 2.2 rom you have, boot to that, then you can flash to a 2.2 rom.
You can't go from CM directly to another rom.
I am on 2.2

An HTC rom.
CM is not a typical ROM.
Restore your original backup, and try from there. If you don't have one, you may need to RUU

Ok, so basically I am going to unroot - reroot?
I just flashed from cm6 straight to baked snack directly with no problems. Not really helpful but you shouldnt need to flash to a stock rooted rom first. Note sometimes you have to wait a good 5 minutes for the htc screen to go away. Probably took about 5 when I moved from cm6 to snack.
I just tried again, attempted to go to fresh. I let it sit for 10 minutes with no results.

I unrooted- rerooted with the same results, I cannot flash ANY roms other than Cm6 it seems, this is very frustrating..
Anyone else have any ideas at all??
Thanks!
Try flashing a new recovery. If you're using the newest amon go back to the last one or vice versa. Or even move over to clockwork. But I would ask about that I know clockwork doesn't play well with cm6. This could get you in trouble but I guess you always go back to amon.

Anybody? Any advice?
if you flashed cm6 and have it working... its my understandung that you cqn not just go and flash a different rom. there is a process that needs to be followed.
but i have never and never will use cm6 so i could easily be talking from my rear.

I flash from cm6 to rooted stock rom when I need to update prl and stuff.
After you flash wipe dalvik and cache again I had that problem when flashing snap.

[Q] FPS Fix for Stock 2.2?

I rooted my evo yesterday, so I am still completely new to how things work. (Though I have read the forums for a while)
I know I can flash a custom rom to fix the 28FPS limit I am getting, but I don't have time to completely wipe my phone and rebuild everything again.
It's kind of looking like I just flash a kernel? but I am not sure and I don't want to brick my phone.
Is there a way to just fix the performance limitations (i.e. FPS limit) and keep my stock 2.2 and all my settings/preferences?
Thank you.
I searched but didn't find anything that made sense.
Phone:
Evo w/ stock 2.2 (UnrEVOked3 root)
You should be able to just flash a custom kernel, but I don't know how those work on plain stock. Make sure you nand first.

I have rooted stock 2.2 with Kings kernel #9. Works flawlessly. It's hard for me to go back to regular once the FPS is unlock.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754128
Just flash the zip file from recovery. Make sure you do a nand backup before you start flashing the kernel.
Thanks for the info.
I will give it a try later.
Can I flash any kernel? Or how does that work?
I was looking at snap 8.2. Is it compatible with stock & sense?
Also, once a kernel is flashed can you update it without problems or doing a full nandroid restore?

No. Go for Netarchy's or Kingklick's kernels for 2.2 Sense roms. Snap is only for cm6/AOSP style roms.

+1.
I'm using hero 4 on stock odex with no issues and great battery life.

I will read into each kernel.
Any suggestions on which is best/worst?
EDIT: Thought I would post some links to each kernel you listed:

I couldn't find the link for Hero_over's kernel. The forums search function is down for some reason.
Please correct me if those aren't the correct or official links to the kernels.
with netarchy it says:
An important note for Clockwork mod Recovery users:
Clockwork Mod is reportedly not wiping correctly (ie; if you try to wipe cache/dalvik-cache/data/etc it's not actually doing it, or not doing it right)
You may want to consider using Amon Ra Recovery instead.

not wiping correctly may cause your phone to bootloop no matter the kernel(Fresh's seems to be particularly sensitive to it), you should be ok though. If it happens just keep redoing it till it works.
I'm using netarchy's 4.1.9 cfs ATM and it's working great. Smooth as butter.
king kernel is really good, thats what im on right now. medium use: 500+ texts, wifi on, data on, hour of browsing, 30 mins of music playing, live wallpaper. with all that im hitting ~13 hours and im at 8% right now. king kernel is pretty good, nice and smooth too

Should I use BFS or CFS?

as for backing up your kernel...i dont know...(didnt know that was possible). once you unlock fps, you'll never want to go back.

There really is no generalization for which is better, BFS or CFS. Every phone is slightly different in build due to margin of error in production. Some people have great results with BFS where others do not. I tried both extensively on Netarchy and much prefer CFS (better performance and battery). Why? I don't know. It just works for me. You will probably have to do some experimenting of your own.
Edit: Also concerning recoveries, I would go ahead and flash Amon_RA's recovery over ClockworkMod just to avoid conflicts. Amon works with everything is very straightforward to use.

And are Nandroid back ups interchangeable between recovery images?

you can use rom manager to install ra, but then all you'll be able to use rom manager for is to download roms. Which is still ok - some folks prefer it this way, because some things shouldnt be too easy, if you know what I mean. If you let a tool do all the work, what do you do when that tool breaks or is unavailable, and you have to do it manually?
ra can only be used outside of rom manager. Nands cannot be used between ra and clockwork - if you backup with ra, you need to restore with ra, and if you backup with clockwork, you need to restore with clockwork.

I don't mean to be ambiguous, but it really depends who you talk to. Some people swear by RA, and insist that clockwork doesn't wipe properly. Other people can conclusively prove that clockwork does indeed wipe properly, and use that with no issues. Personally, I use clockwork, but do all my flashing and wiping manually and not through rom manager. The only time I ever had any issues was a while ago, with an older version of clockwork.
I also think that clockwork has the benifit of not requiring signed zips, but don't quote me on that.
edit - just wanted to add that some devs will specify one or the other to be specifically used for whatever it is that you'll be flashing. So if they say to use X to flash, you better try using X to flash before asking why you're having issues
idk im new to trying kernals, but im running fresh 2.2 and im only getting 31-33 fps.
using kinklicks bfs 9 kernal
any help?
I have tried most of the kernels listed. For me, the best has been Netarchy's 4.1.9.1 cfs. It is smooth and has not had a single glitch, which I can't say for the others I have tried. The second best I tried was the Baked snack battery kernel #5.
cfs or bfs? What I found was that bfs gave slightly better benchmark scores than cfs, but I had a lot of odd problems or glitches when running bfs kernels (mainly scrolling lag in some apps, and some apps fcing randomly). haven't had any problems with the cfs kernels. Frankly, I haven't found any advantage to bfs because, while it seems to give better benchmark scores, in actual use it seems much slower and more laggy to me than cfs.
Clockwork or AmonRa recovery? I have used both, only had a problem once (boot loop), and that was with clockwork. Since then, I have always used Amonra's recovery to flash with. When flashing just a kernel just wipe cache and Dalvik cache, then flash the kernel. As long as you do not wipe data (reset) you should not lose anything when you flash the kernel.
Oh, and when you do a nand backup, it backs up the kernel you are currently using with it. So you can easily switch back and forth to test by restoring your backups.

Flash then all before leaving recovery. Also when flashing radios make sure you let them flash if it looks like your phone is stuck just leave it alone for half an hour. When flaking then you will see an android with adb arrow or a box with an arrow coming out of it this is normal DO NOT PULL BATTERY you will brick your phone.

how old is your evo? when was it purchased .. when was it built?
did you check if you radios need to be updated??
this maybe unnecessary.
radio update.. is your biggest concern... once started.. you must let it finish... even if it looks like it is locked.. if you have to leave it run for 1hr.. let it run till it finishes.. till it boots back up to recovery!!!! make sure you have a full charge on battery!!!!
if you interfere with it.. the radio can be crapped.. and the phone has a high chance of being bricked.
I'm just worried about the brick part. I know if I flash a different kernel I won't need radio update, it's that correct?

i am a little worried on that question.. not sure if read it right...
are you asking?
if you can change the kernel.. INSTEAD of upgrading the radio?
answer = NO; they are totoally different things. Radio is way lower in the phone.. and is done deep down... that is why it can Brick your phone.
the radio needs to be updated.. once..
it will work with everything else...
unless a new radio is released.. but they do not change them very often.
then..
kernels and ROMs can be changed as often as you wish...
What I mean is stock on myns 5 requires a radio update however ziggy or another kernel does not. Is this true? The stock kernel needs the radio update or the rom?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
it is required for all new ROMs... and all new Kernels.
you need to do it.. if you dont already have it.
have you even checked if you have the new radios? how old is your phone?

2. Wipe data , cache, dalvik cache 3x each.
3. Choose install zip from sdcard.
4. Flash latest radio update combo.
5. Follow all prompts. Be patient the radio flash takes a few minutes. DO NOT PULL BATTERY! Let it finish. It will go back to recovery when done.
6. Reboot device after radio flash complete. Then go to menu--> settings-->system updates--> update profile.
you have now flashed radio combo
Then reboot into recovery. Wipe data/cache/dalvix 3x each again.
Choose install zip from sdcard.
choose myn's rls5 and flash

As for the slow browser, download adfree from market, install and click on revert, reboot, and optionally update adfree and reboot once more if you want to remove ads. The host files that came with rls5 are outdated and playing havoc with your sanity.

What exactly did you flash? If you did what the previous poster said, you should be able to boot. When you say you weren't able to boot, what exactly happened? Did it give you a bootloop, where the boot animation plays over and over, or did it hang at the white 'htc evo 4g' screen? The only reason you need the updated radio's for RLS5 is because the stock htc 15 kernel that comes with RLS5 needs the newer radios. You could flash a custom kernel before you boot the rom, and avoid updating radios all together. I use the old PRI and old radio with RLS5, i just use netarchy's kernels, and it works very well!
Everything they're saying correct and follow their instructions. I just want to add, you may want to stay on PRI 1.77, as a lot people are experience bad battery life with 1.99.

Invisiblek is the way to goon Gingerbread roms. I've flashed his newest with OMFGB 1.1.1, and it is awesome. No problems snappy, excellent battery too!
Sometimes people (including me) mix up AOSP and Sense, sadly they don't like to play with others if you install them with the wrong rom. Racists, pft.
I have only had the phone about a week now so I have had a lot to learn. So far everything seems good now and I am happy. Now if i could just get better battery life lol.

and i am still having same problem. Any ideas ?
Edit: Messing around with rooted phones is something I have just started so it maybe something simple I am missing.
Not sure why my cell doesn't seem to like other kernels but

seems to be doing just fine so i will leave it alone.
Thanks for all the help.
Have you tried Incredikernel? Kernels are really a matter of personal preference, but Incredikernel seems to be one of the best. (And also my favorite.)
I gave it a shot a while back and had trouble. My issue is that he touch screen doesn't respond. Incredikernel is recommended in several places but i had zero luck with it supporting the screen. I have started to wonder if its support for slcd.
I will try it again and see what happens.
