[Q] dumb question - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i was looking around on the forums trying to find an answer to my question and i was unable to find one.... i know its probably really dumb but im a bit confused
so i just rooted my htc evo today and everything went though just fine
my question is i know that sprint releases OTA updates every once and awhile and i read that you are NOT supposed to download them because it can unroot your phone and possibly brick it
my question is
1. is there a way to refuse the update so that it doesn't do this?
2. i saw something saying to wait for someone to root the update? what exactly does this mean?
please excuse my dumb question

It means exactly that, just wait... the guys are really fast the last ota update was rooted the same day.we have the best open source staff here on the forums
Sent from one Bad ass Evo using XDA App

so..like how exactly would you put the rooted update on the phone then? it is similar to flashing a ROM on to it?

Yes sir, That was not a dumb question btw, lol
Sent from one Bad Ass Evo using XDA App

There was a thread in the Nexus S forum about stopping the reminder for OTA updates. You could try to PM him and ask if he could do something similar for the Evo. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=891975
But, like everyone else here has said, just flash the newest version of your favorite rom once they incorporate the OTA instead.

First, wrong section. You may want to have a mod switch it before all those angry people come in here with torches and pitchforks Anyways, currently there is no way to downgrade. Until a root exploit is found in 2.2, there won't be. That said, you should be able to get Flash player runnning by factory resetting the phone. A lot of people had some issues with flash originally, but factory resetting seems to help a lot.
Weird that someone would flash 2.2 for you, since its not actually official yet, you may want to go back to the store and talk to a manager about inappropriate conduct. That's not an official update and they never should have done it, even with your permission.

Hey I was just wondering if there was a way to download a multi gig file such as a movie on the HTC Evo. I have been able to download a couple avi movies on the evo, but when I tried to do it with a 8.75 gig movie it wouldn't download it. I was hoping a dev could take a look and see why. I wad on WiFi when trying to download so I ruled out the possibility the network rejected it. Could someone help me ? Thanks in advance.

Is this a different evo than the one you were using on 7/25? Lol.
Nice try blaming it on best buy.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Yes of course we need this option and when the official is released by Sprint then the delv will start
Sent from my EVO using XDA App
No this is not the same evo i had on 7/25. My girlfriend dropped my last one in the bathtub. I wasnt to happy to say the least. I had to wait about two weeks to get a new one. I have not tried to reset it but i will. My phone had the update notification when we first activated the phone. Thats how i got 2.2 before most people did. So i am not ragging on best buy.
I'm gonna call BS on this 1, I seriously doubt that a Bestbuy employee found the leaked OS and downloaded it and renamed it update.zip and then hooked your phone to a computer and went through all that BS to update your phone to a unofficial OS
BTW I'm sure the devs are not gonna feel sorry for your lame BS story and start working on a fix, I my self installed the leak just like you did and am gonna have to wait for HTC to bail us out
Why would the updatebe available when it wasn't even released yet?
Sent from my EVO running Fresh
Hang on, guys. Wasn't the FIRST OTA released last week on the 29th? The "unofficial" one? It wasn't sending notifications, but some users were able to manually apply it by going to Software Update and checking for it. Heck, there were dozens of posts from users here that got it right out of the gates. Poor souls.

[Q] Some Questions!?!?!

Ok first off let me say, im a n00b still but i am constantly on here trying to read and learn more about our phone! i am currently fully rooted running damage control 3.1.2
My first question is Froyo 2.2, currently was is the best and most stable rom running it? that still keeps 4g? ive looked in development but im just curious on your all's opinion about it!
2nd: i see all these threads about updating radios? what is the need for that?
3rd: Would you recommend to just restore to factory with no root and install 2.2? and just wait for a root that way?
Oh boy, be prepared to get flamed for posting this in General. Anyways, I'm currently running Fresh 3.0 and it seems to be 100% functional. I can't test 4G cuz I don't have it where I live, but with pretty much all the resources for Froyo available now, most of the roms are now getting stable releases. Updating your radio can give you better reception and service but I've never seen any significant differences myself. I usually just flash the latest one just to be up to date. Don't install the stock OTA! There is already a stock rooted version out.

Totally understandable, but there are a lot of people here who post nothing but negative crap and a question posted somewhere other than Q&A is like a tractor beam for them. Anyways, hope you find what you need. There are also a lot of people here that just want to help.

defiantly upgrade the radios....absolutely make sure you do plenty of research first on the correct way to flash them. Also in my opinion I wouldn't do the ota update...just flash the stock rooted 2.2 rom.good luck...and remember.....lots of research first before doing anything.

4G does work on Fresh 3.1.0. Tested it this morning at work. So far, that thing is VERY stable. Haven't noticed an issue yet.

[Q] How to ROOT from OTO Gingerbread S-ON and back to CM7???

1) I rooted my EVO 4G using the following method: "How to Root the HTC EVO 4G with Froyo 2.2 [Video Walkthrough]"
2) I flashed many ROMs, but finally settled on CM7 (7.0.3.1 currently).
3) got excited that the official GB ota was available, so UNROOTED (back to S-ON)using "[GUIDE] How to Unroot the EVO in 2 STEPS"
4)Finally, i installed the OTA today.
MY PROBLEM:
I cant get back to Root & CM!!! there is not much help for this, ive been googling but cant find a method that will root my evo from S-ON/gingerbread (2.3.3)...or even back to Froyo...so that i can root and get back on CM.
DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO DO THIS????
i just wanted to play around and see what the officail GB was like (knowing that i would LOSE root, not knowing that i wouldnt be able to GET BACK to root), and now im stuck in STOCK im desperate for all me settings, apps, and WAY OF LIFE with CM.
HELP!!!

You cant root. You ****ed up. The new bootloader is locked so root has to be updated to work with it. Everyone said DONT UPDATE.
Sent from my......ummm...let me get back at'chya!
There are a couple of threads on the topic. Basically, with S-On, you are out of luck, and need to wait for a new rooting method. For future reference, no need to unroot to get the OTA upgrade. Either wait the day (3 hours in this case) for a rooted version, or just flash the OTA version. So long as you keep S-Off, you are OK for flashing ROMs and stuff.
Probably gonna be awhile because HTC waited until the gingerbread root methods were patched before releasing the update. Honestly, I'm impressed that they did that. It means they are paying attention to security holes and actually fixing them.
Your best option was to wait it out because rooted versions of the ota were being created. I find that better because you can just flash it to check it out and restore back when your done.

Why do you geniuses keep taking ota's when you are already rooted?????? Seriously every update it is the same thing. Just flash the rooted version of the update. All you had to do was wait a couple of hours for it to be uploaded to xda. Maybe its for he best if the people who made this mistake yet again never be able to root.

On a side note this is important to all of us.. What about all the 2nd gen phonea that are coming with s on and stock 2.3" .. Htc may say that they arent encrypting bootloadrra, but if we cant root that means sh_t.... Again this is beyond me, but at least lets focus on what needs to be done... Again this is gonna mess up everyone with a brand new evo or the 3d....

This was the first ota that came out since I rooted...now i have learned what not to do...and didn't know that the rooted versions pop up so quickly...hopefully they will release a new ota with the bootloader unlocked...and soon

It's useless....someone may have done as I did and now have to read through and spend more time on this BS to get to the possibility of a solution.
So are you thinking that the refurbished phone will have a newer firmware? I don't know about that but it doesn't seem to make sense....is that some thing like asurion would do? And if you do get a new snazzy updated phone are you promising to donate your time to the cause??? Lol

Ok i have a Bell Samsung Galaxy S2 model number gt-I9100m, currently i have updated through kies to 4.0.3.
Baseband: I9199MUGLD3
Kernal Version: [email protected] #3
Build number: IML74K.UGLD3
Now, the problem i am having is plain and simple, Bell ICS BLOWS! The phone runs like complete crap. Now my other problem is also pretty plain and simple, i dont understand or have not found how to root the bloody thing. I dont have a micro sd card, and even if i did i dont no what version of anything to use. I have used search i have used google and either its just not clicking for me in my brain or i have not found the information i need. I want to root the phone and load a custom rom onto it.I found one site but it had a giant warning stating the roms listed where only for the verizon version of the phone. Anyways im just really frustrated and a noob to android and samsung and throw my self upon the mercy of the android gods and hope that someone out there(who is not annoyed by me asking) can help me out. Thanks in advance.
And crap, i put this in the wrong section. Im sorry.
No one is going to get mad for asking a question. But they might get mad if you ask the question in the completely wrong forum. This is the GS3 forum, not the GS2 forum.
Best advice I can give you is to start with the right forum. Read the stickies, and you should be fine.
Personally I also own a Bell GS2 and ICS sucks. Battery life is brutal, phone constantly locks up etc etc. But its a work phone so I'm unable to root it, and install a different rom. I just live with it considering I use my GS3 more lol

Not currently rooted running 4.1.2 should i wait to root?

Hey guys and girls just joined the site been looking around and reading alot of interesting things.
Like the title says im running 4.1.2 but i hear there might be a release of 4.2 coming the 20th?
I'm wanting to root my phone and join the club. I'm pretty much a newb when it come to this I want to make sure i do everything right when i start the process i'm a truck driver so my phone is a important part of my day to day activity and cant end up bricking my phone.
Ive been looking at youtube vids and reading comments some people having problems and some doing just fine.
Could someone recommend a link one with a video to show the process that would be great, should i wait for a over the air update to 4.2
Sprint won't be going to 4.2 . They are bypassing and the upcoming update will be 4.3. I would wate until the update comes out before you root. That way the roms and rooters will be able to be written and hou can have all the perks of an official 4.3
Sent from my Sprint Galaxy Note II on Tapatalk Pro.
I disagree. I would root now. It's possible with any OTA update, it could secure the root exploit. And nothing has been really said when any update is coming. Could be a couple weeks or a couple months.
And if you're rooted already, you'll only need to wait a day or two before someone uploads a rooted version of the update to flash.
Plus, if you fubar something, it's likely already been done and you'll be able to find a fix.
And if you do depend on your phone, it's hard to say what things may get borked with the update. So by waiting those few days for the updated rom, you'll find out what is not working and can decide if updating is right for you. Sometimes updates will bork things like GPS.
Personally, I don't see anything you really gain by waiting.

Ditto on rooting before an update. Get root before the Knox **** hits your phone and your warranty is permanently b0rked. Once 4.3 and Knox is on your phone, if you ever root there's chance in hell of ever claiming on your warranty. More likely than not.

What happened with the link being removed for the toolkit download? I watched the video on post #4 seems to be easiest way to do this.

Is this still a good option for rooting the phone?
Any ideas?
Just got my 4.1.2 note today. Within an hour after bringing it home I found the old toolkit I rooted with my other note before I traded it. Why wait
