Make the Market download apks to SD Card - Desire General

Hello everyone.
I've recently switched to the Data++ Hboot with 10MB cache. Ever since then I haven't been able to download large apps from the Market.
I was wondering how to make the Market save the APK's on the SD Card instead of the cache partition. If I remember correctly this has been implemented in a number of ROMs, including the Oxygen ROM to name one. Where would I change that?

Sorry for deviating from the topic, but I have this strong urge to ask you this: How did you get 10MB cache with Data++? According to alpharev.nl, Data++ gives 5MB cache....
On a side note, I also have 10MB cache but my apps are installing fine (with a little help from A2SD).....how big are the apps you're trying to download? Maybe I haven't come across "big" ones yet...

Oh I see they've updated their website. I'm using an older version of Data++ (System 180M, Cache 10M, Data 261M). I still have the img plus a screenshot of the website to compare MD5, if you're interested.
Well, it was just a guess. Downloads to Angry Birds (both versions) and Rocket Bunnies are not working, to name a few. Since they're all over 10MB I assumed it was due to the smaller cache partition. I'm also using A2SD btw.

Hmmm, they are not too big then (was expecting 20+MB).....I just downloaded those two apps couple of hours ago on my one and it's running fine even though I've only got 10MB cache.
Normally you'd need a file manager (like the one with Titanium backup or root explorer) to do the job of moving .apk files to SD..these are normally stored in /data/app inside the internal memory and requires root access to get them...but the files must be downloaded in the first place.
Is your system up-to-date? I too had similar problems until I did a complete flash-over and updated everything.... unfortunately I didn't work out the cause of it

Oh I see, I was under the impression the apks get saved on the cache partition. In that case, I should look for the problem elsewhere. Yes, I'm running the latest Sense ROM (2.29 with the 5 ending), but modified to suit my needs. I guess it could be related to that.
More info about the 'non-downloading'. When I click on install in the Market, the download icon appears quickly in the notification bar and then quickly disappears. Was this the same problem you were having?

In short....yes...that was the main sympton I had....the download icon disappears quickly....and it only happened to some of the apps
Have you tried rebooting the phone?...

Yes, tried that. Also tried clearing the dalvik cache and cache but with no success. I have found this while looking for a solution on Google. Seems someone else is having the exact same problem.

Hmm, yea. The thing that's really frustrating is I still don't know what the problem was in my case..if I did I could've been a little bit more helpful. In my "rage" I just flashed a new kernel and a new ROM and that sorted out the problem for me....didn't stop to wonder what was actually causing it.
EDIT: I think changing the kernel, especially, did it for me...

Hmm…
I have the same problem (except my /cache is 3MB so I can't download files larger than that).
Funny though, it used to work just fine (I have Angry Birds and flash for example), it has only recently started to act up.
If anyone finds a solution (possibly without flashing), I'll be quite grateful
P.S.
When my download fails (downloading icon simply disappears), my logcat shows DownloadManager reporting that there is not enough space (with about 60MB on /data) and then Vending complains about the file not being found (because DownloadManager didn't download it).
Seems like a bug in DownloadManager to me. It probably doesn't look up the cache (mine is in /data/cache IIRC) but uses the free space on /cache to determine if there is enough to fit the .apk.

I'm now working on same think. Need to Market downloading apps to SD card instead of /cache. So is there any tweak for this?

Yep.
Requires a little bit of knowledge about how linux handles mount points.
Basically, the easiest way is to bind mount a folder on the sdcard/data to /cache.

I get this .. I just clear the market cache ... go back into the market , all fine .
I normally have to " download " stuff 3 times , before it installs.

[Q]CM7 apps Force Close

I have used CM7 on my Incredible for a while now and have had to constantly wipe and reinstall every week or so. When i install, the ROM runs perfectly, with all my apps working and everything. After a few days though, most of my apps force close whenever I open them. Namely, messaging, Gmail, and browser force close, along with my market installed apps.
This has happened to me many times now and I can't figure out how to fix this issue. I have changed different options when installing the ROM and tried Fix Permissions in Rom Manager and nothing fixes it .
My friend's phone as well as my dad's have had this same issue on CM7 as well. Any help would be greatly aprreciated!

Any ideas?
Check and make sure your data/data partition isn't full. If it is, grab a cache cleaner from the market to free up some space.
This actually happened to me earlier tonight.
Had to reinstall to get through the night til I got back home, but I may need to go back to another ROM if this keeps up. Glad to know I'm not the only one though.

That's true, didn't think about that. Will I have to keep doing that more and more if i install more apps though?
This happens to me and all my friends phones with the cm7 final. They keep telling me its user error. We all have to clean wipe about once a week because of force closes. I finally switched it redemption rom

If what Smabbage said is true then hopefully that'd make sense. That way when you consistently install the nightlies, there is no way for the data partition to fill up all the way. Good to know. thanks!
I've been fighting this exact same problem. The only way I can keep it from happening is to do a full wipe and let the Android Market reinstall most of the apps. Then I can use titanium to bring back the missing apps and system settings.
Here's the things I've tried, with no success:
Wipe Cache / Wipe Dalvik Cache
Fix Permissions
Nandroid Backup then Restore (ok so I didn't expect that to do much)
Uninstalling apps, moving apps to SD (using the Android method, not Apps2SD)
Another interesting thing is that I run Watchdog, but instead of force closing, it pops up a message saying "Disk IO Error in Watchdog". That makes me wonder if some partition (Cache, data, I dunno) is out of space or worse, there are physical problems with the internal memory of my Incredible.
I have one question for everyone - How do I see how much space is available on each partition? I mean, I can go to the Android settings and see App Data storage left or SD card space left, but is there an app or tool I can see that will show me each partition with space left?

Had exactly same issue (even same Watchdog error) and Smabbage's answer was spot-on.
To check, open terminal emulator (gives you shell prompt) and do "df -k" - this will list all filesystems and, among other info, how full they are. My "/data/data" partition was full. Cleaned up some cache's and my phone is back in action.
Seems like a lot of games (and Netflix) fill the /data/data partition. Wonder if it is possible to make it larger at the expense of built in memory?
In any case, may be a good add-on to CM to monitor space in /data/data and give a reasonable warning when you close to running out.
I have been using CM7 for a while now and the apps that force close, are usually tied to the SD card. Try moving them to internal and see if it helps.
same here..
I use galnet miui (cm base)
after a few weeks, it shows 'disk io eror in watchdog'
and many programs fc.
never had this problem before.
someone can help me?
how can I fix this..
I know this is an old thread, but ive been searching around to see if other people have this problem.
i have found a temporary solution. open Root Explorer and go to /cache/dalvik-cache....use multi-select to select all items and then delete. reboot (IT WILL TAKE A WHILE TO REBOOT, IT IS REBUILDING, IT CAN TAKE UP TO 15MIN DONT PANIC) yes, this is in fact "wiping dalvik-cache" but ive gotten much better results doing it manually than through CWM.
this will calm your phone down at least for a few days with no force closes/service interruption, but you will have to do it again..........and again, and again. its better than having to do a full wipe though, obviously. hope this helps anyone who is still having this problem.

[Q] There is insufficient space on this device

I have E4GT with Caulkins 2.9.1.
I have the following storage available on my device:
SD Card 24.25GB
USB Storage 3.25 GB
Device Memory 1.23 GB
I get the following error when trying to update apps, or install new apps:
"There is insufficient space on this device"
I have gone into settings>apps>google play> clear cache. -> no change
I have downloaded App Cache Cleaner app and cleared all cached files. -> no change
The error message is a lie written by a lazy programmer. What's actually happening is that the installation is trying to copy or move a file and can't. To circumvent this problem I have to enter root explorer and look for files related to the program I'm trying to upgrade and delete them. Sometimes I just find dangling files which aren't really needed; other times I have to delete the whole shebang and reinstall the program from scratch. One process that I've noticed can sometimes cause this problem is the auto-Odex routine that is available in the Development folder.
Bottom line though is that this problem has NOTHING to do with your available memory space.

How do I find dangling files in explorer. Is there a was for me to determine which ones are wasted files?
before i read your reply i went into recovery and wiped cached and dalvik cache, thought it worked, because i was finally able to install or update about 3 apps, but then got the same error on the 4th app.
so those steps that have been suggested by others on different devices but with similar errors, did not resolve this issue on E4GT.
thanks for any additional help.
This may help http://bit.ly/GNQOZh take a read. I fought this a while ago and went nuts till I did what I describe.
It's usually, but not always, as simple as looking for files with the name of the program imbedded. The most recent program for me was AudioGalaxy.... so I just searched for and deleted any reference to the program that didn't look essential.
If you're REALLY stumped, then download a program from the Market like Log Viewer, which shows you the real-time system log of your Android operating system. That's how I discovered that a failed file copy was being misinterpreted as a full disc in the first place. It also will show you the name of the file being copied or moved and into which directory. Helpful hint: cut and paste the log into something like Notepad for easier reading.
By all means empty out your caches... but only to remove a potential file that's causing you a problem. Like I said, you haven't run out of free space.
Good luck!
A common source for this error is also that there are partitions on your phone that are not visible in the system settings, but which can fill up too.
If you open a console on your device, i.e. with terminal emulator, and type "df" you should see every partition and how much space is free on it.

Try SD Maid.

You 'cleared data' on the media and still had this issue? http://mikemartinezonline.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/03.png I've had this issue a few times with a few people- again it just happed to me yesterday! Seems that the media storage, media hub, oovoodo, and some others were taking up huge amounst of space. In fact my media storage was at 800MB until I cleared it. Especially noticed this for me after adding and removing media and swapping different sd cards.

[Q] Problem installing / uninstalling apps

Hi,
I tried to install Angry Birds Space last week, the download and installation seemed to complete normally, however once the installation was complete the app wasn't present and the memory the game uses (~24mb) was gone. I tried again the day after and the same thing happened. So I'm now down 48mb of RAM and my phone has started to freeze as there's only ~ 1mb of RAM free. I tried to uninstall the apps in the Manage Applications section but they don't seem to be listed there. Is there anyway I can find where these files are stored and delete them? I've already had to do a factory reset on my Desire twice in the 21 months I have it, I don't particularly want to do it again.
Thanks!
it happened to me too, are still with stock 2.3 (or 2.2) rom?
Best thing I could do was root and flash another rom, and it's really worthed
I'm still on 2.2. Did the same thing happen to you with Angry Birds Space or just in general?
No, I cannot rememeber what I was triyng to install (it was in dec!), and surely, that time, I had just applied the 2.3 offical update for desire (which btw is really awful).
Another thing you can do of course is uninstalling most of your app so that you sort of "clean" your memory, checking if any folder related to these app is really deleted from your sd (you can check in the system directory too, but I don't think you can delete folders without superuser permission). Then try to re-install everything.
Anyway, the suggestion is still the same: try a new rom
You probably just have to clear the cache of the market app, or you can use something like this to clear the cache of all apps
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.infolife.cache
If that doesn't work you can try to clear /data/local/download, that's where the market stores its downloads IIRC (don't know if you can clear it without root though)
Had the same problem. (Not with the same app as you have) but clearing the market cache did the trick for me

*SOLVED*[Market crashing constantly]-The app Market(process com.android.vending)

I just installed cyanogen mod 7.2 stable(It's a clean install and i have wiped every thing) following that installed the latest gapps package(gapps-gb-20110828-signed).
The market would not even load and crash constantly.
I have tried these tips:
1.Cleared data and cache (settings-> applications-> market -> Then clearing cache)
2.Wiped Dalvik cache
3.Fixed permissions.
4.Changed "language"
5.Re-installed gapps package.
All this was to no avail.
Downloaded "jelly bean" market and installed it.
Now the market would load ok but it crashes when i try to download some application. It sucks.
Any suggestion ?
Try Increase your MTD Partition if you have any... It should fix it... If not, delete your account from the settings (Accounts) and log on while opening PlayStore. Hope it helps.
Have you flashed the right Gapps? Some of the latest ones are for ICS Users and i have found they dont work.
Just google "Gapps" and then find the one without ICS
Hope this helps

Deleting the account and factory reset is not working....even installing the CM 7.2 again and again is not working.
What does it have to do with MTD partition ?I have got sufficient internal memoery as i told you that it's a clean install and I don't have any app installed on my device except custom CM apps.
What about going to Setting > Manage applications > Market > Force close
I know you may have tried it and seems silly but i had a problem updating my apps and i did this and everything seems to work. What about a reboot?
Edit: I found this temporary workaround so see if this helps!
Here is what I did:
1- go to app manager from settings,
2- uninstall the latest version of google play store
3- clear data and cache of google play store
4- install version Google Play Store v3.5.19
5- when you open the market, google will still prompt you to update to the latest version (dont continue, leave it as it is)
6- if you want to update/install the apps do it thru the browser in your phone/computer (it will straight away update in your phone)

If you have Custom MTD partition, the issue may be, you have a low space reserved for System (Where GAPPS are installed) and more for Data.
Try using 175, 15... It is sufficent enough to run smoothly.

Ah hell, why the hell didn't I ever think of this ?
Thanks for the life saving tip ,still not sure though if it was market version related or the system partition related.
Increased the partitons to [mtd 175 15].Market took a while, got updated to version 3.7.13 and it's working now.Really appreciate your help.
BTW,How did you figure out that [mtd 175 15] will work on "CM 7.2 Stable"?Just wondering can’t we take some more space from “system”.I have had [mtd 140 5] working well with "CM Nightly”.
Not sure how much we can take from system to flash CM 7.2 Stable but I guess we can still reduce "cache" to 5MB.

I found out the partition size because I also wanted more space for Data as I don't like installing apps on SD (It can easily get corrupted as you use the SD with your PC during File Transfer, etc and or malfunction as some SD cards aren't that strong and I don't trust any!). That partition made it run.
Another way you can increase your partion size is simply by taking out pre-installed apps and or ringtones/notifications, etc you feel you don't need (My style). Anyway, I run Erwin P's ICS on Wildy now while having a backup of my CM7 incase I need to use the Camera/Video app again... LOL (I haven't tried using the dual booting thing... Always speculating, say I am lazy... Will try that out someday soon).
Anyways... Glad you have your phone working now.

TBH I had done enough research to fix the issue.I did what one usually would have considered good research else it shouldn't have taken more than 5 endless days and nights
Even on CM forums,Android forums and several blogs.Don't know why couldn't find your post.
Anyway,"olu.danNY's" advice helped me else i was going to ditch CM7 for some other ROM .In my opinoin there should be a thread where users can update their working MTD partitions regarding their ROMs.
Right now I am running CM 7.2 Stable with [mtd 140 15] and some other users are running it even with [mtd 130 15]. i.e cache partiton was the root of the trouble.

Cheers.

I also prefer removing pre-installed apps using TB but that doesn't really help you that much.
Custom MTD partition does the real rescue and you can also use "S2E" to gain more space by moving apps to Ext partition e.g games, maps.Just make sure you don't move app data to Ext.
SOLVED
P.S. Don't attempt to shrink the cache partition "too much".
Keep it(Cache) ≥ 15

YMMV - especially with CM7. It has been mentioned a few times over the forum that CM7 has a bind script which makes your whole /data partition used as cache - as long as it's activated (default) and not corrupted there shouldn't be any problems with the play store. No idea regarding other situations but I know of people running a 5MB cache partition on CM7...

Yep,I know CM7 has some sort of script that automatically moves cache to data partition if it overflows(larger than the cache size).
I have had [mtd 140 5] working well with "CM Nightly”.
No idea why it is causing trouble with CM7.2-Stable. Maybe it's lacking that script which makes it sufficent enough to run smoothly if cahce partition is <15.

[Q] Dalvik Cache wipe with dtapps2sd?

I"m not sure if my phone is messed up or not. It seems to be working right, but when I run Android Tuner and optimize the apps, they all force close and will not operate any longer. The same thing happened when I went into recovery to make a nandroid. After it was done, I wiped dalvik cache and when it rebooted many of my apps won't operate. Looking at them with ROM Toolboox I can see all the app icons diappeared and are left with just the technical name of the app ( Ex... com.liberty.toolbox-1.apk) instead of the market icon and the more common name used. Part of it is getting chopped off. This has never been a problem before this week. Does anyone have an idea of what is wrong with my phone? I'm a noob, but I've got the basics down. Help me if you read this... Please.

What ROM are you running? Are you running a2sd?
With certain ROMs, I had the same issue (though more often when running a class 10 sd card then a class 2 card).. Basically the "fix" was to reboot into recovery, wipe cache/dalvik again, and then reboot. Every time I rebooted the phone, I would have to reboot twice. What is happening is that the phone is missing the step where it has to mount /sd-ext so your apps are no longer there, but the data is. So you can see the names in things like ROM toolbox, because it sees them in /data, but the apps don't exist because /sd-ext isn't mounted.
I'm having some internal memory issues. I know my internal folders are jacked up. I'm not sure how the file system works. Is it basically a blank canvas that the recovery builds folder by folder, OR does the phone retain the file system and the recovery just fills in the empty folders? Can somebody tell me how this works please? If anyone knows a link to the Evo 4G file system, please post it. Every place I look, the file no longer existed, or has been removed.

How big is your sdcard? That is showing a 28 GB SD card with no ext partition. Did you ever partition it?

Yeah, it was partitioned. I fixed it just a few minutes ago. Man...it was the vold.fstat files that were all jacked up. I fixed it by unrooting it and flashing a completely stock image. Now I'm about to unroot it again and I'll be good to go. Thanks for even taking the time to read my post. In a relative ghost town of Evo4Gville that means a lot to me. Thanks brother. If you were curious, I have another thread called Storage issue problems, or something like that. The last post there outlines my problems. Thanks again for your input.
