Help! EVO stuck at Red Triangle after using auto root - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am currently doing the Universal Auto Root (linked below), and it seems it is stuck near the end.
[ROOT] ~~~ HTC EVO - Universal Auto Root ~~~ v2.2 (works with all version)(1/10/11)
It says it is currently waiting on the phone, but the phone is at the right area correct? I have the entire command prompt below, but the last line is oof course the issue.
Starting ADB server...
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *

* Using the phone push Power to select Bootloader and then say Yes when it asks

* It will complain part of the way through about the bootloader or radio failing
but should continue.
* Once it finishes it will ask to reboot, say No.
* Use the Volume Down button to highlight Recovery and then press Power to
select it. If it stays on the white htc EVO 4G screen for more than two or
three minutes pull the battery and turn the phone back on. Again say Yes when
it asks to flash the PC36IMG.
* Once in the recovery you will see a red triangle with an exclamation mark,
rooting will automatically resume a few moments after that appears.
It is very important that you do not interrupt your phone when flashing.
Unplugging or turning the phone off while it is flashing can easily brick
your phone. This script will time out if too much time passes.

Yes everything was working fine until that point.
I apparently just timed out of the auto script.
The phone could not be found or was not ready. ADB and Fastboot report it as
'offline' instead of the expected 'recovery'. Make sure ADB debugging is
turned on, the phone is in the correct mode and that you are using HTC's Evo
drivers that come with HTC Sync.

I would of not used that in the first place. You should use adb and flash amon ra to save your rsa keys before gaining root access in the first place. You don't want to lose 4g all together.

ohh, gotcha. To restart it all you have to do is run the openshell file to bring up a dos prompt. From there use 'autoroot makenandroid' and it should pick up where it left off
If tells you your phone is not in the recovery then you will need to go back the the bootloader and let it flash one more time then run it.

You have to be rooted to flash amon ra goof ball.
But it does make a backup of your 4G the first chance it gets.

My phone will now only go to the boot loader, red triangle, and stay on the "htc EVO 4G" screen.

The pc36ing never got flashed. You must do that per the instructions before going in to the recovery.
Also, once you are in the screen with the red triangle holding vol up and power will bring up a menu.

Do you have a sd card reader? You can put the ruu's pc36img on your sd card and flash it that way.
Something else you could try is loading your phone in to the recovery, so it shows the red triangle, and then running the file that says start recovery. If that brings up a green menu on your phone you can continue rooting

Yes I had to put the right pc36img on my sd card. It was a little hard to find a stock pc36img.zip file. I am currently re-rooting my phone, and has already moved farther than the last time.

Try this.

xHausx I apologize for pm'ing you first without posting here originally. Here's my issue:
I was trying to run the auto root v2.3 and now i am stuck right here....
#6 If you have to flash it manually just push Power to select "BOOTLOADER" and say Yes when it asks to flash the PC36IMG.zip. It will complain part of the way through about Boot Loader and/or radio errors and then skip them, this is normal. Once it finishes say No when asked to reboot and use the Vol Down button to highlight Recovery. Then press Power to select it.
#7 After a moment your phone should show a Red Triangle with an Exclamation mark inside, at this point the script will take back over and start to make a NANDroid backup.... ----> and now I'm right here <------
The script window closed and i am stuck on the red triangle screen. I think the smart thing to do for me is to use that RUU. but I'll wait for some feedback i go further.. Also i tried reading that logfile (see attached) and found certain lines where it said Out of memory while it was trying to write to the misc partition. Thanks for the help!
PS: its my wife's phone so she has my evo for now
Also forgot to mention i read the help that big_tiger received but i was also confused on how to flash for that RUU pc36img file.. bootloader or recovery??

xHausx -
I tried downgrading to something other than 3.7 with 2.10 HBOOT as I read somewhere amongst the thread that the auto method wouldn't work with that version.
Currently I'm stuck at this point:
Starting ADB server...
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
Checking MTD configuration...
Phone uses the old block size.
Firmware version '3.30.651.2'
Battery is at 100 percent.
The ADB Shell does not have root permissions.
Pushing res\rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin to /data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-ar
m5.bin...
*This will take a few moments, please do not disturb this window or your phone
until it finishes...
Waiting for the phone...
Found the phone connected as 'device'
Got Root!
Checking for needed files...
Pushing res\flash_image to /data/local/flash_image...
I have the 3.7 RUU and can try running that and reattemping the Autoroot but I thought I read somewhere that if I have HBOOT 2.10 that this method doesn't work yet.
I looked through a lot of the pages but so far haven't found anyone else stuck where I am. Any thoughts on how to proceed?
Thanks in advance for all the help my friend.

I got stuck at the same spot yesterday, so I eventually ran the 3.7 RUU to start over.
Now my phone reboots after it's been in sense for about 30 seconds.
I can't figure out how to get it to stop rebooting, also the device cant be seen in ADB.
I reflashed the 3.7 RUU from the exe and from a PC36IMG file multiple times and it still reboots. Seems like something isn't getting cleared out by the RUU.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

[Q] Root without being able to boot? 8 hours research - no answers yet.

Hello,
Mytouch 3G slide
- won't boot to OS or recovery - just mytouch splash screen
- never been rooted
- loads HBoot
- can access fastboot
- will not boot into recovery - just mytouch splash screen
- I went through steps to flash rom etc..
- can not get adb access because can't get to OS the enable usb debug etc..
- can't do anything through fastboot because remote not allowed - but it does communicate with phone
- esprimg.zip on sd card results in "older version in main error"
It feels like I've gone through every option possible to recover.
It seems like if I can get root then I can flash a new rom and be back in business? But I can't get root so I can't flash.
Any other ideas out there? Thanks!
have you tried a different sd card?
Yes, 2 different ones. the .img is being read then checked then it comes up with the "older version" error. Everything I could find about that says I need to push a few files with adb first but I can't do that because I can't get to root since I can't boot to OS. Thanks.
Edit: Just kidding I lied don't download that ESRIMG.zip as it is the Engineering build and that is what you are probably using too and that is why it is giving you errors! So... Hold tight for a bit while I get everything together because I want this to work for you.
Bro I have a solution but it will set you back to stock. Okay so here it is, You are going to have to flash the champion build(Stock Rom for the slide) which can be found here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=713507 , After you download that put it on the root of your SD card (Now I know what you are going to say "I can't access my SD card without being able to boot into the rom!" WRONG!!) get a MiniSD Card reader. Once you are able to put on the root of the SD card if not done already rename it to ESPRIMG.zip and then boot into HBOOT ( Hold Power + Volume Down, but you already know that don't you?) It should automatically check for the ESPRIMG.zip and it will load. Push Volume up to apply the update. DO NOT POWER DOWN OR REMOVE THE BATTERY AS IT WILL LEAVE YOU WITH A HUNDRED DOLLAR PAPER WEIGHT!!! When the update completes press volume up to reboot. You should now be able to boot, but now you don't have root so (Oh wait you never did! Why???)... NEW ROOT METHOD FTW!!! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=896148 So once you complete the rooting be more careful, I cannot emphasize this enough! (BTW if you do root I recommend the CM7 Nightlies!!!) But if my foolproof tutorial that I wrote just for you doesn't work then your phone is F**ked up man! Call HTC for Warranty purposes cuz there is a problem! And if that works Well you are welcome!
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide with Gingerbread because I can! using XDA App
Thanks for the suggestion. I downloaded the esprimg(2).zip, renamed it and put it on the root of SD. HBoot finds it and says loading. It goes throught the load then say s checking image. Then it says:
Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
Vol Up - Yes
Vol Down - No
It doesn't matter what I do at that point. A reboot is a reboot. If I say no, it takes me back to HBoot.
Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks!
I have very similar issue and same result on scree, without USB debugging we cannot get adb to work, thus no rooting, thus no replacing roms.

Well, it appears it isn't possible to get to root without first being able to get into OS to enable usb debugging.
I gave up and bought a phone on ebay that was working except for a broken screen and replace it's lcd with mine.
I'm now back in business.
Thanks to all for your suggestions.

New to Evo, not to Android/Rooting

Hello,
I got my Evo today and am pretty excited! I want to get this thing rooted and some CM7 nightlies going on I am familiar with android/rooting, adb, fastboot, and all that. What got me is seeing the different stuff for different evo's My Evo is as follows..
Baseband 2.158.00.11.19
Software 3.70.651.1
PRI 1.90_003
HARDWARE 0003
H Boot 2.10.0001
Its the white back...
Anyway I am looking for the correct root method, and would like clockwork recovery, if possible. Once I get that I hope it is a bit easier to find CM7 for it, lol.
Thanks in advance
http://unrevoked.com/
Fairly quick. Make sure you have the windows drivers installed [if on windows]. Also, install, then uninstall HTC sync. Once the drivers are loaded, on your phone enable usb debugging, connect to pc in CHARGE only, then run unrevoked, and put your phone down. It should reboot 2 times...taking roughly 5-8 minutes, give or take, and you'll be all set. You'll be on clockwork recovery by default, and you can upgrade to the latest recovery using rom manager.
here's a compilation of info for you. I recommend unrevoked btw

* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MrvgV2Nias&feature=related (What is root video)
This next link (first one) is where you will actually go to free your phone from the man lol. If you are going to use a Windows computer to root, there is an extra step of installing some drivers:
* http://unrevoked.com/#evo
* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsoVzMadiQE (Video using unrevoked and drivers)
* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXWm8262iMU&feature=player_embedded (Another video using unrevoked)
Drivers link and instruction info for windows:
* http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install (FYI, the drivers link is near the top of the page in the link)
* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXDszE0Ytn8 (How to install HBoot drivers)
Good luck!!
Thanks for the fast responses! I am downloading the HTC sync, kinda slow server on their end. I have the H Boot drivers installed and ready to go. Let me get this straight, in charge only mode I run "reflash package" from my PC (windows 7).
Thanks

[Q] Possible Bricked Phone

My phone is stuck at the white Evo splash screen. This happenned after I performed the autoroot procedure located at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
I have tried all kinds of ways to bring it back with no success. I downloaded shipped roms 3.30 and 3.70 (3.70) is what my phone originally was. The RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed.exe will not run on my windows 7 machine I assume it's corrupted and I have downloaded it from two different sources. The RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.30.651.3_Radio_2.15.00.09.01_NV_1.77_003_release_157088_signed.exe runs but it always tells me that my battery is below 30% even though I plug the phone in to the charger and after a few minutes the LED turns green. Then I tried downloading the 3.70 rom as a zip file, named it pc36100.zip, put it in the root of my sd card, then I went into recovery mode and I told it to start the update. It looks like it works but I get a message at the end that says "partition update fail!" and then it asks me to reboot and I'm right back at the endless white evo splash screen. I even tried to load several times using the evo-recovery where I was able to pick which image I wanted to phone to update but it fails with a symlink error of some sort.
I'm stuck. Any help would be appreciated here.
Thanks

I would also try running the RUU and PC36IMG a couple more times, maybe download them from a different source. Do you have HTC sync installed on your computer? I believe it's needed to use the RUU. So if you pull your battery out, reinsert it, then plug your Evo into a wall charger, the light goes steady green after a few minutes? Strange, I'd try a different RUU. Did you download from here? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884060&highlight=hboot-0.97+ruu . I haven't experienced problems like this before (fortunately) but I've also read about people needing to format their SD card before it would work, using the PC36IMG. Not sure why, but possibly something corrupted on the SD card? Did the auto root give you any sort of errors or anything? Or did it just appear to work, and then this happened?
Also, you could try running the RUU from fastboot mode. Boot to the bootloader, select 'fastboot', and then try the RUU
HTC Sync is indeed needed for the RUU in .exe form.
Boot into hboot by holding down the volume down button while turning on your phone. I believe you choose hboot USB and then run the RUU exe.

The fastboot method worked! Awesome. So, in the hboot menu, it says S-OFF, which I assume means it's rooted. If that's the case, then I can push any rom I want on top of it now, correct?

Sweet, I'm glad it worked for you. So it says you're S off, even after running the RUU? I've never used the Autoroot method, but it must flash unrevoked forever, somewhere in the process. Well, if it says you're S off, I believe the only thing you're missing before you can flash anything is a custom recovery, which you most likely do not have, after running RUU. I believe that since you're s off, you can just flash a custom recovery from the bootloader, and then flash a rom. You could also use ROM manager to flash a recovery, you'd just need to download and install the Super User app, I believe. I think that should work for you? I've never tried to just flash a recovery from a stock ROM, right after an RUU, but if you're s off, i dont see why you can't do that. Download the PC36IMG I attatch here, make sure its named PC36IMG, put it on the main directory of your sd card, boot to the bootloader. Let it scan and ask you to update. Select volume up for yes. After that's done, you should have custom Amon Ra V2.3 recovery. From there, you 'should' be able to flash ROMs. good luck.
Edit: wouldn't let me upload the PC36IMG for some reason. Instead, click this link to download. http://db.tt/7jGH2CA

Uhh no. That PC36IMG.zip is waaay outdated. You know they are all different, right? Just because it's a PC36IMG.zip does NOT mean it's the same file as the next one.
I used that one in two situations...
1. when my friend phone was bricked
2. when did unroot
both times that file worked for me

Stuck on HTC logo/boot loop. Please Help?

Please help! I've been trying to find answers and trying to fix my G2 this whole week and, to even add how much im working/reading on how trying to fix it, i even stayed up a WHOLE night reading about things but still no-go
G2 is semi-bricked because my brother was going to permanently root the G2 and right when the process finished, is when the phone was semi-bricked because he "forgot" a step (great -_- human error)
Just a few things:
Yeah i can go into recovery (VOL down + Power Button) but, im a noob at recovery things, so i dont know how or what to use or do like i said, i've researched a lot and done the steps that i read online and still nothing, so i rather get answers/help from great people in here (i heard this forum is really smart/good at Android stuff)
please help!

explain your semi bricked status... how do you know its semi bricked? which step did he miss?
also you be better off asking in guide how to recover semi bricked phone rather than asking in Q & A....experienced mods usually follow that thread and reply to ppl who have queries
it wont go into the Android OS, it just stays stuck at HTC. No further. And he didnt tell me, but he watched a video on youtube.
and ohhh darn -_- stupid me

go straight to the rooting section and try to find out which method was he using to root your phone... when you narrow that down try to find which step he missed.....when all thats done than either post here exactly which method was he using and which step he missed.....or post in the semi bricked page.....
right now the most current recommended method is using Gfree...
also try to see if you have access to your recovery and if clockworkmod recovery is installed or not....
for that take out your battery and put it back in.... hold volume down and power button....
it will boot into boot loader
give it few seconds to display that "waiting for SD card Pb10.img not found"
than use volume down button to navigate to recovery and use power button as click selection..... if it boots up into clockworkmod recovery than you have custom recovery installed
Yeah i dont have CWM installed, just checked. And what my brother told me is that he was "temporary rooted" then he tried to "perm root", but actually, he didnt go to youtube, he tried to perm root using the VISIONary method.

check wiki for htc vision ... for how to fix errors during rooting.....
also if you wanna root gfree is recommended software lately..... check wiki to confirm.....
also try factory reset.... by turning phone off... than holding power button and volume up and down button .... i think.....confirm via wiki
Well i also cant do any adb steps because adb doesnt detect my G2 (although it detects it when im in recovery (the menu with a phone and red exclamation point) but it says its offline) i can only use fastboot
and btw my G2 is S-ON
and i have done factory resets and nothing
I'm not as experianced as a lot of the but have you tryed the pc10img via fast boot? That might work scince everything is stock on your phone
/edit have you gone the the adb guides it took me a few times but I finally got it...adb looks the best way to go

it might be because you tried the 1.12 verison pc10img.zip and your phone came with updated 1.19 version
PC10IMG_Vision_TMOUS_1.19.531.1_Radio_12.21.60.09b _26.02.01.15_M2_release_149459_signed.zip
try this one by putting in your sd card. your phone should flash it and it shouldnt say version is older...
download from here
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Vision
when you put it in sd card rename it to just PC10img.zip and reboot into bootloader and when it asks you to flash. let it flash
I'll try that right now, but I think I did use the 1.19 one but can't recall.
I'll edit this post to tell you if it works
EDIT:It still says Main Version is Older...you think i need to use the 1.12 one?

[Q] Bootloader Keeps Trying to Flash PD98IMG (Bug Loop)

Good day everyone!
Explanation fell free to skip...
So I have my HTC Desire HD, fully rooted, with Eng-S OFF, Radio OFF, the 1.1.1.1 and all that.
After 2 days running coredroid v.8 phone went crazy and started rebooting (I suspect it was the launchpro app).
I did a full wipe and went to reflash the room but it was not working.
So I tried downgrading again but here's the problem:
Real Problem
Everytime I try to enter the bootloader the
"SD Checking Screen" comes up "Loading...[PD98IMG.zip]"
But my my PD98IMG.zip for some reason is corrupt.
If I choose yes to update SD Zip it fails on step "[4]- Fail-UZ". The rest is ok and in the end syas "Update Fail" Press power to reboot.
The damn thing is that when I reboot this cycle starts again and again! (sd checking....loading...)
If I choose not to update I Still have to reboot which leads me back to the cycle!
Please might community! Tell me how to solve this!
I dont have anywhere else where I could mount my SD Card..
Is there any way to cancel the commands that pushes the HTC to update the zip?
Problem is that the phone is not found on command prompt when this booting begins.
Any ideas??
Best regards everyone,
Joao LUiz
I had the same problem with coredroid v7.1,phone booting, enter my pin and the restart after restart.....but taking out the battery solved my problem

1. Take out your battery.
2. Take out memory card.
3. Put back battery and boot into bootloader. And choose recovery.
4. Put back your memory card.
5. You can do whatever you need to do.
Some advice, move your PD98IMG file to other directory when not used. Don't put at root folder.
Edit: Why are you putting PD98IMG.zip for?

Update 10/09/2011
Went and bought an Microsd usb adapter. Plugged the MicroSD, formated, changed the PD98IMG. zip for a new one.
Plugged in the phone the update went through fine. However when I rebooted only got HTC white screen.
I removed the battery to make it reboot again, now in bootloader. And guess?
The freakin thing is asking for the update again!!! God damn it!
As I see it my phone is with a command that keeps telling it to boot the image. Any ideais on how do I cancel this command?

Thanks for the reply darren.
I was trying to run PD98img just to see if it would stop asking for updates.
I did as you suggested but now when I click Recovery I get a black screen with an HTC on it and a red exclamation point inside a triangle.
Before I was getting a SYNC sign like it was looking for my SD card. The sd is running fine on the adapter...oh well...
So, You restored your DHD using a PD98IMG and now after restoration your stuck either at the bootloader or at the white screen with the green HTC logo?
Firstly what PD98IMG did you flash? 1.32.405.6, 1.72.405.6, 2.32.405.6 or other?
Secondly, can you access the stock recovery menu and attempt a factory reset from there? - Remove & reinsert battery, hold Vol Down + Power. You should get a plain menu in blue if I recall with 2-3 options. One should be factory reset/restore. Use volume to navigate & power to enter.

Andy,
Yep my phone updated on PD98IMG and now I'm stuck at bootloader or the white with green logo!
The PD98IMG was 1.32 from this topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
I did as you suggested. Clicked factory wipe, it took me to a black screen with the htc phone on it + a big green syncing symbol and at the bottom a meter bar with a MicroSD card logo to the right of it.
It went black after a short time , then the device rebooted back to HTC white screen.
Does it mean it worked? Could it be my SD card ?
Again thank you all for the replies,
I'm going crazy over here!
Plus
Now on bootloader screen it says Hboot USB Plug.
But when I go cmd and type adb shell it says error device not found.
If I try to go into recovery I get the Black screen with red triangle and exclamation point.
Is your phone still eng s-off? By right, flashing PD98IMG will revert it to s-on..

Oh great! Now how will I be able to make it S-OFF?
At the bootloader screen it says Ship S-Off.
I was reading at ohter places, apparently I have reverted my recovery to the original.
I need to be able to flash a custom recovery onto the phone. I saw some people used Unrevoked but I pretty sure the software only works on some mobiles and HTC Desire HD is not on the list. Unless HTC Desire CDMA means the Desire HD
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/unrevoked3
What happens when you leave the device to boot normally? Usually the first boot can take upto 5 minutes.
I'm guessing you have already waited that long and that will not be a solution.
IF, and that's a big if, please mind the pun, you still have ENG S-OFF you attempt a fastboot restore. But you do need ENG S-OFF.
EDIT: Ah SHIP S-OFF does no have access to fastboot commands.

Darren,
Thank you!
Update 11/09/2011
I'm able to go to recovery mod. Have wiped both data and cache.
If I run cmd "adb devices" it shows my phone serial number + offline. Also on recovery mod the phone drivers are recognized on windows device manager.
However if I stay on the initial bootloader screen and run "adb devices" it shows no device and the drivers dont recognize my phone.
On the usb devices only shows Android 1.0.
I'm trying to get my phone online so I can run the temp root cmd commands. But it's either offline on recovery or not recognized at all on Bootloader screen. ¬¬"
Since you have cwm recovery, just full wipe and flash a custom ROM on it.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
I've tried everytyhing. Flashing Clowork Mod Recovery, updating from update.zip as well clicking on the bat file.
Everywhere I get permission denied, seems like my phone is not letting me do anything. Maybe my goldcard got corrupted in the mess. I'll make a new goldcard and see how it goes.
Ah as well I've noticed this
The reason this all started was because my HTC was in a bootloop. It would load Coredroid, the initial screen would appear then it would reboot and so on.
Now even with no rooms, no sd card etc. If I leave it to boot normally, the HTC White screen will stay on then it will reboot (goes black, phone vibrates) to the same HTC white screen.
So I think it's got something hardware related, I mean it's rebooting even with no rooms.
Oh geez....
Again, thank you all very much for the support! It's been really helpful, thank you for the ideas guys!
How do you full wipe?
Manually or using script?
If using manual method, what are the steps you did?

Darren,
I went to Bootloader > Recovery > Wipe Data. Then I wiped cache as well. Note that my Recovery access is limited. It says Android system recovery 3e. And in yellow at the bottom E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command.
I also did Factory Reset from the Bootloader Screen.
I can't do any script stuff except for Fastboot commands. Even on that I get "failed" status due to my permission denied.
I really cant understand why I cannot seem to flash a new Recovery.
If I use update.zip I get a failed installation at the end.
If I use clockword mod double click on the bat file the process runs, phone reboots like it should and then nothing, still on 3e...
Did you do what this post suggested?
Download the PD98IMG_cwmrecovery.zip file and rename it to PD98IMG.zip. Put it at root and boot in hboot and update.
