[Q] Maps starting by its own! - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, it's me again
I do use a taskmanager but let it close itself too when killing the tasks. Now it happens often that I see Maps running. But I don't used it for about w days! How is it that it runs by its own?

This is normal. Some apps tend to start when you have an internet connection or after some time. This is perfectly normal and simply how Android / Sense works.

I think I had the same problem with you on one of the days.
Restart your phone and it should be fine.

Even after a reboot I have Apps running and starting all by their own. I kill them with the taskmanager and one or two hours later they run again
Going on my nerves a little. Sometimes like 10 Apps are running but I never used them since last reboot. It kills the battery for no reason
If they run with connected data, is there a tool to make times when the data connection is cut off? Like the apn on off tool but with a clock to time it?
Sent with my DesireHD using my Brain

Like I already said before, this is how Android works. Killing the apps with a task killer is pointless because they open again some time later, consuming power while doing so. You are better off without any task killers at all.
As for the switching off data, Tasker from the Market should be able to do it.

you could try clearing data/cache from google maps, locations and any other map based apps. other option is uncheck the background data or in locations option uncheck both find postion by network/gps (but not really good option). i think you must have a app with is using your location/maps and why it keeps getting started an been used. download spareparts (if you don't want to download app type *#*#4636#*#* into phone >battery history) and have a look in gps usage and network usage to find out.

Phone gets stuck in "upload mode"

Been having a weird issue with my phone lately. I'm rooted, s-off, running stock 2.2, no custom kernel.
Lately what will happen is my phones 3G won't work for loading pages, apps, streaming video as it'll be stuck "uploading". By that I mean the upstream arrow will either stay lit or blink. I've tried to pin point an app that would be doing it with no success. It'll do it for a minute sometimes two then work normally. Seems to happen most often when I wake the phone. Any thoughts?

Hmm, sounds like it might be some app, or service phoning home and hanging. Try using a process manager app to see if you can detect which apps and services are running when your phone is doing that. Try killing all nonessential services, then see if the condition persists. If no, then reactivate one service at a time until it does. If the problem persists after killing all nonessential services, have a look at running processes, and kill any that seem suspicious. Once you know which app, service l, or process is the offending party, try uninstalling the related app.
Hope that's helpful.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I'll give that a try. Thanks.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
So after a few weeks of trying, killing apps or processes does nothing to stop the issue. Its very random when it happens and when it does I can do nothing that uses 3G.
Anyone else have an idea?

Is there an app that will show what's using my network in real time? Not a stats app but actual, current usage.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Could it be PRL and location based? Starting to get real frustrating.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Sorry you're still having trouble
Hi Phaded,
Sorry that my suggestion yielded no positive results for you. If you've killed all non-essential services and processes, and it's still appears to be "uploading," something is definitely not right. I don't think it's PRL, but I personally don't know enough about how the radio works to say for sure.
At this point, you could try a different ROM. If you don't already have it, I recommend ROM Manager root. It's totally worth the $ and is available on Android Market. It makes trying different ROMs really easy.
Trying a new ROM would also effectively reinstall your radio, which might do the trick. Before you flash a new ROM, do a nandroid backup from recovery, and backup your apps with Titanium Backup, which is another must-have, IMO.
If all else fails, RMA? It could be hardware... A genius with this stuff I am not, but I have beaten my head against many a wall..
Good luck!
I installed Virtuous 3.1 last night and so far so good. Going to keep an eye out for the rest if the day so hopefully it is fixed.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
24 hours and no issue with it. This was a multiple time a day occurrence so safe to say it resolved itself.

Congrats Phaded!
Welcome to the ranks of the Virtuous! Glad to hear it's resolved.
Now you've got ROM Manager, you can safely try a host of different ROMs and themes. I recommend the Revolutions theme on top of Virtuous - it's very pretty.

Having same "stuck in upload mode" issue
I have a non-rooted, stock G2 (from T-Mobile) running Android 2.2.
Every day, as many as twenty or thirty times per day, the phone gets stuck in "upload" mode. The data icon shows that data is uploading (or trying to) and I am unable to use any data-related services (whether tethered or on the phone itself). When it happens it can last anywhere from 10 seconds to 5 minutes. The only way I can forcibly stop it is to completely shut down the radio by toggling airplane mode off then on, forcing the phone to reacquire a data signal.
I've tried resetting the phone, deleting every app, reinserting the SIM card, and even formatting the SD card. Nothing seems to work to solve the issue.
My two main concerns are that 1) I can't reliably download apps, check mail, send pics/videos, or other data-related processes. 2) I'm concerned that if something IS uploading, it may be uploading a LOT and adding to my 5GB per month throttle-cap on T-Mobile.
I've ended every endable process, and killed or uninstalled every app possible (I can't seem to remove bloatware without rooting, which I'm not yet eager to do as this phone is less than 60 days old, and I'm otherwise happy with it as is).
Any suggestions or recent information as to why this is occurring?

Market "Download paused" message

The last it happened it turned out to be issue with the Market itself, but now no one is taking about it and I have not been able to get any updates or download anything from the Market for days.
I've tried every suggestion I came across to no avail; clearing cache, data in any app that seems to have anything to do with downloading from the Market, logging in/out/in to GTalk, downgrading the Market app to stock. Nothing works, and it all started happening out of the blue; no problem one day, and the next day the Market doesn't work no matter what.
I don't remember making any changes to the phone, it's been setup a while ago and running to my satisfaction, except for one thing; some days before the Market stopped working I started noticing that my battery wasn't holding up as well as it used to, but I don't know it this has anything to do with the matter at hand. I'm on a rooted 2.2.1 (mistakenly) released by US TMo with a Go Launcher EX.
So, is it me and my phone, or something outside of my doing. I would hate to do a factory reset, so would anyone have a better plan of action.
Thanks

I find the English name now.
It call data saver in the data manager.
Is this happening over wifi and 3G?

It comes out on wifi only.

In the American ROM there are three settings in the Data Manager under Data Delivery; Background Data, Data Roaming, and Data Enabled. I guess the closest would be the last one and it pertains to having data enabled over mobile network. All but the roaming were enabled.
@scrannel: It was happening in both, mobile and WiFi.
Thanks guys, frustrated, I ended up doing a factory reset and restore after all. Now my battery use is back to normal (i.e. excellent) too.
Drat, things (software settings) are fragile; falling apart under normal use.
I am experiencing the same problem. Tried a lot of methods like clearing cache and all but nothing worked.
Everytime I start a download it says 'downloading' for a few seconds and then says 'download paused' and remains there.
This issue is on wifi only, and happened out of the blue yesterday. On my 3g data connection the apps download just fine.
What can I do?
I am having the same problem with downloads from the market, but only on 3g. Everything is fine on WiFi. 99/100 times, an App will take forever to download on 3g, pausing 5-10x during the process. This has been going on since Friday I believe. I have switch roms, complete data wipe, formatted my memory card, deleted .android-secure on teh SD card, nothing helps.
I don't know if its the 3g network or what, but it's really starting to aggravate me
Settings -> Data manager -> Data Saver -> untick "Enable Data Saver" should do the trick
Data Saver off wouldn't help those of us who got "WiFi-exclusive" Market stucks.
Worse yet, sometimes at certain WiFi networks (for example those they give at Starbucks) it works just fine, stuff downloads in huge chunk (from waiting list). Then on other WiFi it wouldn't work.
I even tried it at home WiFi spot with all firewall offline, and still no cigars - "paused".
My market suddenly started working again, but now after a few days it says 'downloads paused' again..
What is happening!

i had the same problem with my stock 2.2.1 defy (but in my case the market got stuck on the old version and wouldnt even update itself). the only thing that helped was doing a factory reset from recovery, and now everything works fine. but afaik there's an app backup option (only in 2.2), so if you do a factory reset you can have most of your apps installed in a minute from backup. good luck!
downloading
Even i am having the same problem when ever it paused like that i will open android market and it will download automatically again try to do like that.

[Q] Maps killing battery

I'm a once a week user of Maps. So I need it, but often it doesn't even run between reboots. On ICS it seems to be killing 10% of my battery no matter what. I've tried turning off GPS. Any suggestions other than freezing it?
Are you signed into Latitude, maybe? That might be something to check.

Not signed into it. Not even signed up for it. I also disabled the reporting of location back to Google and using wifi for location. I should say I first rebooted and didn't start maps, then a day later tried no GPS/reboot/no maps, then no GPS/location reporting/wifi location/no maps.
I'm also seeing the same thing. After the screen, maps is using up to 20% of my battery. I haven't even used maps much since I got the phone.
Very strange. I remember on my Nexus S, Latitude would DESTROY the battery, but signing out of Latitude would fix it. It's not the most scientific thing, but I suggest signing into Latitude and then signing out of it.
Same here guys. Use it once a week, and it has 10% of the battery. Must be some sort of location service.
Maybe make sure the "Automatic caching" is set to Wi-Fi Only and not Wi-Fi or mobile networks?
There is a setting in stock browser to do with location. When I had this enabled I had this problem but once I disabled I no longer lose battery to maps so its worth investigating.

I noticed there is an update out today that mentions bug fixes on newer devices...
Maps update didn't seem to change anything. I also have the same problem on ICS galaxy nexus.
Same, but can't even freeze it!?
Same issue here, Maps and many processes are constantly running, I want to freeze it, but can't even use a simple command like 'pm disable <package_name>', it seems to have no effect!?
Don't really want to uninstall the app, but freezing won't work for me? Anyone manage to freeze it?
Same here. I cannot stop maps from running...
I've disabled the location options in the browser. Disabled all location items in settings. Disabled all locations settings in maps.
It keeps showing up in running apps!
Finally frozen!
I managed to freeze the app with System Tuner at last I could get rid of this. Obviously had to root the phone for that.

Remove all "phone" services

What's happening, guys? I had a question. I disconnected my phone a while back & have no plans to get back on Sprint anytime soon (broke college student!)
Anyway, I use my phone as a media player & for the useful apps. My phone has been freezing way too much lately, to the point where I've had to download task killers to prevent apps from launching. I never had this problem before. I blame it on the few times my phone has been dropped. I've tried the Supercharge script, but the freezing continues. I've also tried fresh installs with no luck. I'm currently on the People's ROM 2.21. I have a feeling that it's due to the fact that I'm on BML instead of my usual MTD, but I'm not sure.
So I was wondering, what "phone apps/processes" can I delete, since my phone is no longer in service?
Just because it's slow and you want to remove cellular services?
From what I understand it's you're having too much apps that runs at background automatically... Try using Autostarts to cut some of them.

Not to be rude, but you should re-read my post.
"my phone has been freezing way too much lately, to the point where I've had to download task killers to prevent apps from launching."
After starting a couple of apps, which I know are background processes, I get on the Autokiller Memory Optimizer app (which by the way, is perfect for seeing all apps that are running, including system) & close them. It sucks to be doing it every 15 mins, though. If I forget, then the phone freezes.
I guess what I am asking for is what apps can I remove, since I don't use the actual phone anymore? (dialer, voice mail, etc.)
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda app-developers app
Somewhere on here is a list of all the apks on the phone and what they do. A google search should pull it up.
Also, if you haven't done so already, go to the TPR OP and grab the V6 Supercharger script. It works wonders for keep memory free.

Yeah I already got it, it's that your phone lags and freezes so you wanna remove some apps INCLUDING cellular services. Yet I insist your trying Autostarts and airplane mode, this combination, if properly set (in Autostarts you can decide whether an app starts during startup, when you turn on WiFi, when you plug in, etc.), can save you a lot of CPU power and memory while keeping the potentials of the apps (not removing them because somehow you may need them)
As for really removing the apps... There are lists floating around telling which APKs can be safely deleted but they're for CM and are based on the "safety" of not losing phone service... So it's really up to you to take the risk. Nandroid backup before you experiment and everything should be fine
Sent from HTC Incredible S @ CM10
So he can remove them and then reflash a ROM or Odin stock and get all those apks back instead of having to freeze and refreeze apps all the time.

Battery drain by maps

Hi guys, I have this problem since last night. Maps are running in background and there is nothing I can do about it, restarted the phone, pulled the battery for couple of minutes, cleared maps cache and data, force stopped and nothing. Never had problem like this before with any of my phones. The phone is 8 days old and everytging is stock. Thanks

Check if you have your location history enabled on your Google account. I do now, and it causes maps to request a location rather often. The battery life on this phone is good enough for me to leave it on though, I find it useful every now and then

Glad it's working for you! Yeah this whole time I never knew how much GPS use was actually draining the battery. I actually read an article online yesterday that talks about how GPS uses a crap load of battery. As of this morning, I only lost 1% overnight. I have 3 emails syncing, wifi on, rest of the syncs all on, google now off. No power saving apps installed. I know i'm saying this in all battery related thread but i'm super excited just like you and want to share the knowledge to all our Note 2 buddies ^_^
Battery drain <- Maps Always On <- Now <- 4.1.2
I noticed Maps was grabbing about 30% of my battery drain so I set out to figure out the problem. Conclusions are:
- 4.1.2 seems to have changed how location is used. I had Google Now on 4.1 and never had this heavy a battery drain.
- Maps was constantly running with TWO services
- Maps did not have to be open or visible, and reboot had both come back even after stopping services
- Disabling "Google Apps Location Access" solved the drain but this made it basically impossible to use Google Maps, because
- Maps would not use GPS without "Google Apps Location Access" turned on
I considered uninstalling Google Maps but realized that:
> All my favourite locations are on Google Maps
> Other mapping software also seemed to want all sorts of invasive rights, which I was not going to grant
So I:
* enabled GPS
* disabled Google Apps Location Access
* uninstalled Google Search (aka Now) using a 3rd party tool (rooted)
* looked for a new search software (let's face it this isn't really necessary is it?)
* found and installed Yahoo Search which I must say seems faster, more interesting and does not require unwanted access to my private data
Battery drain is back to normal, I have ful search and maps and GPS use.

Let's face it. Google is king of search. And that has spread to other Google uses, maps being a major player. I think Google needs to solve this by fine tuning how and when maps and/or GPS is used. Another big thing is Google needs to fine tune how our phones retrieve data in general. Apple has and is still working on it. Intel is fine tuning it majorly and you can see some of the results on anandtech where x86 and ARM SOC's are compared on windows RT. Randomly retrieving data for all data and apps is a nightmare. It would be nice if we could fine tune our syncs and data retrieval in set intervals or let the OS have a smart system where if x app needs this and it see 3 or 4 or whatever x apps need to retrieve data in the next 20 mins it will retrieve all in one fell swoop causing less wake locks and more idle/sleep time.

I had a similar battery drain problem... ~8% per hour when screen was OFF! Finally solved it by turning off Google Now AND the Location Service it used. I guess the problem is due to location history collection performed for Google Now.

Guys first thing first about battery draining is your mobile network not configure properly.. if its configure the network will not awaken your phone it just need a second to runing in background.. just realize it after I install configuration message from provider.. I drain 1% all over night.. and get 2day standby battery with medium usage.. 10 hours screen.. and leaving the phone with charging all night is weaken your battery.. first time I forget to unplug and everything change.. battery drain 5% after sleep 6hours..and only last for 1 day with medium usage.. 6hours on screen now I dont know how to make it back like it was.. using note for 3weeks anyone knows how to increase batt life without changing rom or kernel ?? Im still runing stock 4.1.1
