Hello,
I'm currently a Nexus One user on T-Mobile and I'm planning on switching to Verizon for their 4G LTE phones. However, I want to switch over now and use DINC in the meantime, and with the annoucement of the Verizon iPhone, I could pick up a good used DINC for a cheap price.
My main question is that are there any custom roms that mimic stock Android OS? I also like the built-in WiFi tethering found on my N1 and want to know if they've able to port those over onto the roms for the DINC.
I've searched on google and have not found a defenitive answer on that. I know about other apps that do WiFi tethering, but I prefer the one found on stock Android as that is a true hotspot function and not Ad-Hoc.
Thanks for any answers!
Virtuous is as stock as you can get, and includes the hacked/free wifi tethering.
*edit*
Do you mean stock Sense or stock stock?

As far as tethering goes just get wireless tether from the market

I am with Sprint and just wanted to see if I root my device will I still be able to use the hotspot feature?
Thanks,
Adam
Based on your question, I suspect that you are paying for the official Sprint hotspot service. After rooting, you can use the tethering capability built into 2.2 WITHOUT having to pay Sprint $30 per month for the privilege. If you choose to run a 2.1 ROM, you can use Google's Wireless Tether app and accomplish the same thing, again without paying Sprint a single penny.
For the Sprint Hotspot functionality, you will need to be sure to find a ROM that has that apk installed. Quite a few of the custom ROMs remove this because it is obsolete in comparison to the wifi tether application from google.

I thought he meant you could use sprint's wifi hotspot app if you have a rooted 2.2 rom. I already use the wifi tether app.

Hi
What is the fastest way to enable free wireless tethering on a stock sprint HTC evo 4g.
It is my father inlaws phone, I don't want to do anything major like install a custom rom if possible.
Thanks so much for the responses.
Just search "no root Wi-Fi tether" on the market. Try the first one that pops up called one click tether or something like that.

You are going to have unlock it and then you can leave the stock rom on it but you need to look for a hack wifi hotspots zip file and then he can keep the stock rom and have hotspots for free

If for some reason rooting is not an option for you and finding a wireless wifi is not working because you're not rooted... Then resort to plan B and go USB tether with PDAnet
With the new wifi tether beta version, what settings do you use to make it work properly? I am getting an error?

No, nothing is working as of yet. It is in high demand though, so you are not the only one wondering!

I was so excited to upgrade to JB didn't even think about this until I tried using it today. I was about to make a thread until common sense kicked in. Glad I searched before I posted or I would have been burned at the stake.
:silly:
It works on PA rom, not on leaked Touchwiz. I have nandroids of both, if need tethering, restore PA, it takes few minutes only.
CyanogenMod 10 and AOKP have it built right in. Works flawlessly.
As far as Touchwiz roms, though, nothing is working yet.
Is it a restriction in Jellybean that prevents third party wifi tether apps from working which the Android developers did, or is it just a compatibility issue which will be fixed in future updates of Jellybean or the tether app?
As mentioned in last 2 posts, it does work on some JB roms, so it's not a JB limitation.

Delete all of the tether apps you've installed, wipe Dalvik cache, and use the native tethering app. blue tooth or usb are the only options

Are you sure? I asked the question in the jellyblazed topic and someone using it replied that wifi tether is not working? See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33018998&postcount=103

wifi tether is not working, however you can use the native tether via bluetooth or usb. i would have posted in the jellyblazed thread but my status does not allow me to post in development forums.

Ya I'm sure it works on Verizon just fine. Youre in the sprint forum. Sprints hotspot is setup differently which is why verizons has a hack and sprints doesnt. I could flash a stock verizon rom to my sprint phone and tethering will work.Sprint ****d our hotspot capabilities with the update. I will say tho and it must be some random fluke that while running a leak, LIH I believe, the hotspot worked once or twice when I tried it.

Same Here, will be very glad when we get this solved.
Detailed Problem Description
I have searched and read quite a bit on this issue and do not have a clear understanding of what is actually the core issue here. Best I can tell, Sprint changed the interface/API to something with JB that prevents 3rd party tething. If that is accurate, not sure what that is specifically. If that is the case, it doesn't explain why it supposed works on some JB ROMs. Similarly, if it works in ICS and not JB, one would think that the API would not be the issue.
Several have implied that the native CM10 tether works since it is based on AOSP; however, mine will present as an AP and allow clients to connect but the data just doesn't pipe through. On that note, I have seen reports that non-TW ROMs work.
I am clearly not the expert on this matter but would find it useful is someone that does have real insight could clear the rumor air on what is and isn't really the issue.
Works!
This is an old thread, but if you're here, don't despair. Works like a charm for me (stock, rooted sprint s3) following the links in qbking77's video: Free Wifi Tether/Hotspot for the Samsung Galaxy S III on Jelly Bean
I was wondering if there was a around the fact that virgin mobile blocks Wi-Fi hotspots on their phones unless you pay the $15 fee. I'm rooted, so I was wondering if there's a way I could use that to my advantage

I just recently bought the HTC One V and after doing quite a bit of research (there's not much on the Internet about it), I was able to successfully use my rooted Virgin One V as a mobile hotspot.
You'll need to use the Wifi-tether app. I'm using the 3.2 Beta version. I can't post the link because I'm a new user, but you can find it on Google.
Make sure you change your settings to Generic ICS 0. Afterwards, you should be able to successfully tether to other devices without having to pay that extra $15.

Hi, lil bit an offtopic question here. what about reverse tether? Do we have an app for that. I used internet pass through when I use sense rom, but right now i'm using non sense-based rom.
Haters gonna hate. Potatoes gonna potate. Waiters gonna wait. Aligators gonna aligate.

Simple question in need of a simple answer: is the reason why the app doesn't work on 4.3 because we need insecure, modded kernels with iptables, etc?
I completely rely on tethering to get online lol
thanks for the replies guys
not sure about all of that. but another member pm'd me with a mod for the 4.3 roms that allows tethering. ill post it soon, but he msy have already put it up in the rom thread.
it should help anyone on a 4.3 TW rom.

Thanks for the reply doc! He has already posted it in yours or Saranai's thread (not sure which one) but it ended up killing my 2.5gb of tethering instead of masking it as phone data. When I use TrevE 's Wifi Tether app coupled with a VPN it just shows as phone data usage and not tethering, giving me unlimited data since I'm on the $70 plan. Make sense? haha
was it sn older one? im not seeing it. itd be posted by theArtizan.

Might have been an older one. The one I used was uped by a Spanish guy I think, or he had a Spanish sounding name. Can you give me link or a way to find this post by TheArtizan? Highly appreciated
Is there a way to tether for free on 4.3 stock TW rom? Even if it's not using TrevE Wifi Tether? I really need a way to tether on my Galaxy S3 with 4.3. Since I upgraded last week I haven't managed TrevE or any other tethering app to work on my S3.

Wouldn't risk it... make a backup though. I believe its safe for all variants of the s3 but could be wrong. You could test it haha
