[Q] Wireless issue with a few roms - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

first of all thank you for viewing,
i have a problem with any rom running CM or gingerbread when trying to join a wireless connection that has a hidden SSID at WPA2 security.
i have no problems connecting to any other wireless connection as long as they are not configure as mention above.
now i would claim that there is a problem with the wireless configuration and the phone trying to handshake with it but this is not the issues with most roms.
because it works fine with most roms but does not with a few other roms i am sure that this is not hardware related.
here is a few troubleshooting steps i have gone through in order to see what is the source of the problem.
1st) i have loaded and tested every radio for the Inc (including the EVO radio) but the problems persist.
2nd) i have loaded and tested a variations of kernels to see if this is a cause of the problem and no luck (i tend to leave the Dev's choice in kernel alone in most cases)
any advise will be grateful please as i am at a lost and with search for people in my same place i have not found any yet.
please someone help i love playing with the Roms but this is starting to kill my experience as being able to connect to hidden and secure wifi is a must for me.
thank you.

silverramsrt,
thank you for the search and post, so what i gather from the 2 other instances of the same problem there is no fix for this as of now other than to broadcast you SSID.
i just cant imagine why would the developer version of Gingerbread does not have this working and i hope some one finds a fix for it or that a fixed version is added to the full release.
i know, i know high hopes.
thank you

You're welcome. It won't be long before one of the incredible devs tackle this. (pun intended)

[Problem][Froyo WIFI][Belkin N1 Router]

it seems that
not a single froyo; froyo sens or aosp roms is working with my router.
I get "obtaining address" the hole time but not further.
has someone an idea how to get around this problem?
I know others have the same issue so it would be nice to have here some real info on what to do.
For others having the same problem:
please do not post the same problem here, of curse you should give reevant information if you having the same problem. but keep the thread clean of "me too reports" or remarks such as: "this can't be it works fine for me."
UPDATE 1 Resetting the router is not helping at all.
static IP isnot the solution as well.
I am lookin now for a ROM without Wifi N modificated driver.
thx.

You must be doing something wrong?
do you have the latest firmware in the router?
Im using a Belkin N router without any issues at all.
I also had issues with my Belkin router. Seems like a Belkin problem, because with other routers there was no problem at all.
Unfortunately I did not find a solution.

have tried to manually change the IP address of your desire?
You're asking us not post if I'm having the same issue, that seems counter-productive?
I'm having the same issue. Finding this one a little difficult one to troubleshoot. I can say that it's not specific to Belkin routers, as it happens on both my work and home wireless routers:
Netgear Wireless-N 300 ADSL 2+ DGN 2000
Netgear DG834G
Both of which have most up-to-date firmware.
Intermittently gives problems. Haven't had an opportunity to test whether a router reboot resolves the issue temporarily.
The problem seems to be with Nexus ported Froyo, not Sense-Froyo.
As suggested above, most people find that setting a static IP address works. Perhaps try an app called Wifi Static if you have multiple wifi networks with different networks with different static IPs. But in my opinion these are workarounds to a problem inherent in Android.

please have a look at the first post I updated it.
since my phone works just fine when i use Eclair 2.1 with Sense.
so I started compairing the builds seeing that they all seem to have a "hack" to bring Wifi N standard to the Desire so it might have something todo with the WIFI N enabling that all of these roms provide.
but I cat finde a build without it can anyone point me to such a build so I can try it?
thx.

I tried many radios, many WM roms, but no success with wifi, it just not work with 2.2 Android...........Belkin N1
Do normal computers work with N connection? I've used Belkin's routers in past and they all have given me issues(They look sexy though). If you disable N on Belkin's router and only keep G, does it work? Have you tried manually setting IP address, gateway, subnet and DNS?
My work around was to set a static IP on my desire only issue now I have to remember to switch back to DHCP when I leave home. Anyone wondering how to do this on android go to WiFi then press menu button again to display the advanced settings.
Would still like to find a permanent solution for the Belkin report firmware.

[11.Oct.11][CWM] CM7 VPN Fix v1.0

Hi All,
This is the solution to the thread CM7 with working VPN
With lots of source code sifting and debug monitoring and finding most of the problem within a specific file namely "system/bin/mtpd".
I have compiled a CWR zip file for people to flash with this file inside.
This will replace the broken file and replace it with my file. After flashing the VPN PPTP will connect and work but does have some disconnecting problems sometimes. Still trying to find out why. But at least now it will connect and work until it disconnects.
I wonder if I could get some help from more devs to sort out the stability of the connection sorted out.
Some files that need to be check
mtpd - Needed to be exchanged for Typhoon and Hyperdroid
ip-up-vpn - Needed for Hyperdroid
pppd
racoon
VpnServices.apk
Would really appriciate some logcats so that we can pinpoint where the connection is being lost.
Confirmed working: Typhoon roms. v1.0 & v 1.4
Hyperdroid from v1.4
Not working: You tell me
Other Issues: You must at least set up one VPN connection with the default android settings menu for it to export the libraries, if you are using 1VPN.
Regards,
Arne.
thanks a lot
thanks
Pleasure !!!!
thx, maestro
Really nice
arne, it's ok for you when we include it in our roms? (hyperdroid and clk cm7 tweaked)

I have check this with, TyphooN CyanogenMod 7 Nightly v3.0.4 to v3.6.9, all of them will now work with VPN PPTP.
It should work perfectly with Hyperdroid's CM7 aswell, but at the moment it doesn't. Still having to check the dependancy of the pppd file.
I don't mind if this gets included into the ROMS. But wait until I have sorted out all the bugs and it is working on all the roms.
v1.4
After some hard work the v1.4 is out and this will work on Hyperdroid and Typhoon CM7 roms. Still the VPN disconnects randomly but at least you can get it to connect.
I use 1VPN as it allows me to set an auto re connect but this is not a good solution.
Really nice. Hope you can fix the disconnects.

To repair the disconnected I need to get a few log cats together. I susspect it is a program specific command that is causing the VPN to disconnect. Pinpointing the program and command can help me repair this.

does this supports group authentication (similar to cisco client)? can it be flashed with MIUI-XJ ROM?
I have tested and can report that the connection is stable as long as its being used constantly. I have successfully streamed a couple hours of video from netflix with no interruption or disconnects, but with normal browsing the connection disconnects after a while.
Hi,
I'm currently on an AOSP ROM (tytung's NexusHD2 v3.2a). I know the thread-title says CM7, but I hope maybe I could get some help anyhow
VPN is extremely important to me, I need it for support issues at work, and since support situations rarely come with a predetermed planning, access to VPN over mobile data is an absolute must for me...
Sadly for me VPN works just fine over WiFi but doesn't over mobile data, I'd rather the opposite Mostly when a WiFi is around me, a PC I could use is not far, so that wouldn't be that much of a problem. When a support issue happens at work during non business hours I'm likely neither around a WiFi nor a PC, so that's where VPN over mobile data would really come in handy
I tested loads of ROMs, AOSP and CM7 (including Hyperdroid, Dorimanx's 2.9.9, Amerciandoid...), but all have the same behaviour for me.
So to me this seems to be a general issue.
Here are the symptoms I'm experiencing :
VPN will connect fine, a ping will go through, but after a certain volume of data goes through the tunnel (really not much, less than an initial VNC frame, so after just a second or so), it will brake, no data going through but stay connected as far as the notification of VPN shows.
And it's a question of data volume (traffic) not time, I left it pinging for over an hour, and it was still pinging, but ICMP packets are really tiny. After that I tried accessing a Windows share on the other end of the tunnel through filemanager, it showed the 1st level of folders, I could drill to one folder deeper and than it broke off again
Is this something you've experienced as well ... ?
I tried Dorimanx's v2.7 kernel on NexusHD2 ROM installing VPN patch (I suppose it is the 1.4 patch in the first post that is installed since Dorimanx gives credits to Arne182), didn't help either.
I wasn't really expecting this to help, since his ROM 2.9.9 also has the fix, and it behaved just the same...
I'd be thankfull for any clue pointing me in the right direction !
JP.
This thread has not been updated for a while so I am unsure if the problem has been resolved for good or not.
Anyway, although I don't know if the stability is related, but there used to be an Android-bug which caused disconnections. You could avoid it by disabling password-encryption.
see this post of mine:

Tested with l2tp and I can report that l2tp is way more stable than pptp! Been connected for hours, with periodically Internet use.

Thanks for testing, I still have not found the time to get into the code, but at least I know that the l2tp is more stable.
With 1vpn you can set up a ping rate so that the connection does not time out, but timing out connections doesn't even come close to why it is disconnecting.

[Q] [HELP] - Wifi issues on ICS CM9 Roms (gedeROM & EnergyROM)

Hello guys..
I had the CM7 ROM installed earlier which had issues with the Wifi connectivity but not regular, used to happen once in a while..
After the new Kernel got released on 28th by Haschcode.. i decided to take the plunge the CM9 way with gedeROM.. trust me it has been brilliant.. After the installation I m able to connect initially to wifi.. subsequently when i try connecting to the Wifi it has not been connecting..
I tried EneryROM which also has been giving same issues.. Need your help on this guys..
Also for information sake.. before installing the ROMs.. I wipe the cache, factory reset, Dalvik.. then flash the ROM
Would want to know if any of you guys are experiencing similar issues and if you had been able to get around it..Please find the screenshots attached..
I havent tryed energy but I did try gedeRom never could get it to connect period end of story not that it isnt a sweet rom and the developer has put very excellent effort into it others have had good results. I really dont have a clue why this differs from person to person or rom to rom but I do recall once being able to correct this under advanced connection or by simply not letting or letting google keep a backup of my device. Being in development stage there are little quirks that spring up that dont hold true for all users everyones methodology varies. I couldnt get the new miui to even boot some say to flash at a full charge can fix that problem. The new AOKP has been working very well for me but others have had issues dont know how much is directly related to rom/kernel/ user error at flash. Hashcode has done a briliant job with his kernel and the developers of these roms have too patience is a virtue at this point until some bugs are smashed. For me if I have alot of trouble I simply just move on till a later date then try again the wifi thing kinda is a deal breaker on a kindle without another way to connect to the net.
Edit: at one point there was a mac address problem with the new kernel I believe that was resolved but it gave every device the same mac address which I understand causes some routers to rebel.

But thepooch.. what u said is 100% true..the ROMs are nothing short of brilliance.. infact the icons r much sharper and the system is pretty smooth in CM9.. shd thank Hashcode and the other ROM makers..
I have an SMC router.. planning to test on a friends netgear this week lets see..
I am on AOKP Milestone 5, and WiFi is working fine for me. I just tried disconnecting and reconnecting again; no problem.
A really fine ROM, and yes; Hashcode is a god.

3.0 Kernel released on 28th is changing Kindle's WiFi MAC address - you should check MAC filtering policy on your WiFi router. Settings/about/status is the way to find your "new" MAC address. Developers found solution for keeping original MAC address, it will be included in next kernel/rom versions - so do not erase Kindle's original MAC address from router's MAC filter list - you will need it soon.

Ewwh that sucks There's got to be some kind of workaround have you tried advanced connections? Your router is very picky
Its a total shot in the dark but maybe you could try the Hellfire cleaner before you do a fresh flash not the nullifier I'm not totally sure about that one yet. Maybe there is some fragments left behind from your previous flashes that are bottlenecking you? What kind of wireless connection is yours?
I was having similar issues. I think Hashcode's kernels hate certain routers. What kind of router do you have?
My fix was setting my router to run with a static connection instead of with DHCP.
Can you please post a logcat in Hashcode's kernel thread? The issue will get resolved faster.

Router reset with ICS Hashcode 3.0
I have very similar issues you are all reporting. I can use CM7 on my Fire and the wireless works perfect almost all of the time. I gets a little screwy at time, and I just reboot the device and it works fine again for days. When I use any ICS with Hashcode it works GREAT for about 2 days. After that mark, any time i connect with the wireless to my dlink B/G/N router, it will actually reset the router (not settings, just off/on) over and over again. Does anyone know if this issue is being addressed? I am not much of a networking person to know what the Fire could be doing to cause my router to do this, so I am really at a loss.

Wifi only works properly on Sense ROMs

I have the Verizon HTC One M8 with s-off and rooted. I really want to use an aosp ROM, but I have wifi problems on all of them. I know that other people were also having issues with wifi disconnecting, but that is not my problem.
The wifi range is terrible. I have to be close to the wireless router to use the internet. When I am close the speed is perfect, but as soon as I move a few rooms away it cannot download anything. The phone still shows it is connected to the wifi with full bars but its impossible to even load a webpage. When I use my iPad from the same distance I can play HD video no problem.
The strange thing is the issue does not exist when I am using a Sense based ROM (stock, ARHD). I apologize if this is a common issue that I am unaware of but any help would be appreciated!
Its been a very well known and reported issue since the release of any AOSP based ROMs. Its not really strange that it works on Sense ROMs considering Sense ROMs are specifically made for this device. AOSP based ROMs have to be made to work on this device. You'll just have to be patient and wait for it to be fixed. Other than that, nothing can be done at the moment.
Dang, I thought for most people the issue was with wifi dcing! Oh well, next time I will make sure to look into it more before making a post. Also, where is a good place to look for updates pertaining to issues like this?
Thanks!

No WIFI on AOSP ROMS - BOUNTY $20

Will pay someone to help me UNDERSTAND and fix this issue I have.
I have ATT HTC ONE M8 - S-OFF, CID 1111111
I have successfully used all Sense ROMs. But if I flash ANY AOSP ROM I have no WIFI whatsoever. It connects sometimes and drops right off. I can't use any non-Sense ROMs because of this and I am starting to get PO-ed.
Please help, reward in it.
I was told that wifi is like this because of HTC having a closed source wifi driver. Regular unsecured networks you should be able to connect to, but secured connections you'll have to be extremely close to the router to connect. Frustrating, I know.

It is and has been a big deal for others. You can see this in pretty much every AOSP thread we have here. Only a few of you guys are experiencing no wifi at all. There's only a couple of options that can be done next to "just dealing" which is digging into the code and trying to fix it or using a non AOSP based ROM.
Try this if you want and test your wifi and let me know if it's any better.

If I got great 4G signal here at work I probably wouldn't mind as much about not being able to connect to the network here where you have to log in to use the free WiFi. I can never get to the acceptance page. Since there is free WiFi here I might as well use it but I can't. CarbonROM seems to be PERFECT aside from the WiFi issue plaguing all AOSP ROMs at the moment.
I just hope that someone can confirm that it is an issue that is being looked into. I'm a little curious as to why HTC would lock down its WiFi drivers...
I have had the same problem as you on all AOSP roms except Liquidsmooth. I flashed liquidsmooth beta (from the HTC m8 original thread) and wifi worked while it didn't on all of the others. The most current one is running on 4.4.3 and that may have something to do with it. I really want to flash Paranoid but Im waiting on 4.4.3. Liquidsmooth is a very stable rom if you want to check it out. I saw on a PA Google+ post that the 4.4.3 update may help fix this issue so I would wait... Although, I could be wrong
I hope that it gets resolved soon. I am so sick of using Sense. In fact, I hate all stock interpretations of Android. AOSP or die.

Have you tried playing with the WIFi module? If it is working on one, then you should be able to use it's WIFI module on another. If you aren't getting any wifi at all, well that sounds like a kernel module issue to me.
What kernel are you using?
My problem isn't connecting to WiFi, I can do that just fine. I haven't tried connecting to a secure password-protected network yet, but "Guest" access points I can't get to the page where you accept the terms of use unless I'm a few feet from the router. I don't know of any ROM that has allowed me to connect farther away from it yet. All the ROMs I have tried seem to let me use unsecured access points with no problem.
On AOSP ROMs I've tried the included Kernel baked into the ROM and Excaliber 0.3.
On Sense I'm on Faux.
