i want to use the tool on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=888372. i was reading through the t-mobile guide on throttling, and i got to page 9 without finding my answer. there are 39 pages, and i'm sorry if it offends someone that i didnt read through them all. so, my question is, will this tool work on my g2? or will it break it? i have back ups of both the stock rooted g2 rom, and my cyangoen user customized rom on my phone and on my computer. but i'd really rather not wait the ten minutes without internet that is going to happen if this ****s up.
EDIT: Okay so just be clear, this a post, about a tool, for the htc EVO, linked up there, that i want to know, whether it would be safe to use, on my G2
Dude, at least *try* to do your own research before starting a new thread. No more than halfway down on the first page of this subforum is this:

How to defeat data throttling, specifically built for the G2.

Why would you think something made specificly for another phone would work on the G2. There is a thread in development for this subject and give instructions on how to defeat the data throttling, if those instructions are to complicated for you to follow then I think you might have to wait for someone here in the G2 forum to come up with a one click solution.

why does everyone on xda think im retarded? I just want to know, if it would be safe to use. as from what i can tell, it only edits the services.jar file. I did not say i could not follow the directions on how to defeat throttling. I did not say i couldnt handle it. what i did say, was IS IT SAFE TO USE.

and if reading, correct spelling, and the correct usage of too, to, and two are too complicated for you, you should probably get microsoft word.

I misunderstood your original post.
However, here's what I'm thinking (no I didn't try it, I don't care about data throttling, but I did read the OP on both links). Given that this is a services.jar edit, and the threads linked specifically say that each ROM's services.jar file is different (hence the lack of a single solution for all ROMs), I would say that this is *probably* not a good idea to use across devices.
As mentioned above though, simply do a nandroid and then try it yourself - as long as you can boot into recovery, you can restore the nandroid if it doesn't and then the only thing you've wasted is ~15-20 minutes of your own time.

what im going to try, as per a message from a user, is to use the t-mobile services.jar in the zip, an edited version, and use it that way.
the reason i did ask, is that as my phone is the only source of internet i have atm, i dont want to break it permanently, or to a point where i need to have the internet to fix it.

you can follow instructions eh? well so can i. i rooted my device, installed cyanogen on it, ive edited several other things on my phone, as per the instructions of others. Notice how i asked before i actually went through with the update? i figured hey, there's a lot of guys more knowledgeable than me on here, why not see if someone knows the answer before i end up possibly having to come back here asking for help.
But then there are retards like you. My major, is computer science. my speciality is non unix-based programming. linux is a fun little project for me, not my life. that being said, when someone out there has much more experience in an area than me, i'm not afraid to ask for help. Someone who actually understands what i am asking, like the guy above me, and the nice guy who pm'ed me knows that i'm not asking a stupid question.

I think i hear a troll growing, oh ****, sorry, i forgot i was feeding one. Peace.
in case anyone competent wants to check this out, here is what i have done so far. i did not flash the original tool, but i did open the tool up and replace the services.jar with an edited version using the cyanogen cm6.1.1 stable releases copy of services.jar repacked it, and tried to flash. I got ~"trying to update>opening update>update failed (bad)" in the clockwork recovery language. i didnt edit anything about the tool other than the version of services.jar inside of it.
the version i used from cyanogen, i edited following the how to defeat data throttling instructions with the windows script.
and lol to the guy who rated this thread one star. ONE GUY. ha ha hahahahahahah.
Well here's my two cents on 2 topics...
On topic : I think making a zip file for instantaneous data cap removal would be great. I did the data throttle removal when it first came about to the G2 but the kicker is that I really dislike cyanogen roms and reverted back to stock shortly after. I forget just exactly how to repack a zip like this but messed with it in Flippys overclocking zip to make my own 1.9ghz update.zip a while back. Hopefully I can make one if Jenlow doesn't figure it out before me. I personally find it to be a good overall question that is sprouting some good ideas
I mean the possibility of a zip format throttle remover would benefit the entire community so why fight about it?
Off topic : Soooooo about this internet.... I have a friend who is paying $25/mo for a 1mbit connection in his apartment. I used my speedtest app in his living room. I got roughly 9.6mbits down. (Who the hell cares about up speeds though lol)
I pay exactly the same price he does for a lan as I do for my data and it is nearly 10x faster. In cases like that, it's more than worth it to use your phone as your source for internet.
/debate
The only troll I see in this thread is the OP; otherwise, said OP would have searched the "G2 and Desire Z Android Development" section and/or just click on the second-to-last link of my signature. Considering that I must've flashed a modified system.jar to my own phone at least two dozen times over various ROMs (including the current GingerVillain), I'd say it's safe.

Soo.... I have had android phones for about year. Now I have the epic and I love it a lot.., but I'm hearing about rooting and ROM'S and all this other stuff... What is it? And by doing these things will I damage my device.? I need to be clued in big time.
well before you get dinged for posting this let me try and give a link that may shed some light

Well... that guide on what everything was helped a little bit but it was all kinda confusing seeing as I'm new to the terms and whatnot. It basically sounds dangerous though and if I accidentally "brick" my phone I am going to die what are the positives of rooting my phone? And also, why would I get dinged fo posting this???
Cuz is posted 1000 times and u need to do your homework and start reading starting with 1click root is your best bet. And don't be afraid this phone is almost impossible to brick like I said almost and good luck.

Because technically this is supposed to be a developers board. They want you to learn the basics elsewhere and come here to develop new software.
And also we have people asking "what are root and roms" pretty much every other day. And then new people come and don't bother to read the threads that already answer their questions or use the search to find answers. Instead, they expect someone to start giving them the answers from scratch all over again.

If you can't afford to be without your phone for a day or can't afford to replace the phone if it becomes damaged, then do NOT mess with it.
Most circumstances all this is harmless/recoverable, but if the phone is a necessity (or not yours, ie parents), I wouldn't mess with it.
The only thing more annoying that seeing 50 post threads consisting of 48 people commenting on "wrong section" is threads from people that just messed up their parents phone and -now- it's an emergency.
Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798067
That should cover pretty much everything you need to know to get started and research stuff on your own.
Ummm thanks to everyone? I appreciate the advice and I'll try to figure this out. I'm just a newbie here (obviously) and I didn't know the ropes about how to find out "basic" info... Thanks for the links that were posted as well. Also, for the person who said something about this being my parents phone...? This is my phone.... and I paid a lot to get it and I don't want to damage it
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Ohh... and also I just believe I'm going to leave my phone as it is... I don't see the positive benefits of rooting it. Plus I don't want to damage anything
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
That's probably a good idea. You shouldn't make any major changes to your phone if you don't understand what you are changing.
Oh yeah, no benefits whatsoever
WHY SHOULD I ROOT MY PHONE?
Rooting offers several great things including, but certainly not limited to, access to hidden features, total customization, better battery life, and overclocking. It gives you control over the device that you paid money for in the first place. The devs here are great at finding features that the manufacturers left out or disabled and making them work.

I was switching between an HTC Sense Rom and Gingerbread roms by using clockwork
Recovery 3.0.5 and selecting install.zip from SD card. Any rom that i try and install
Gets to flashing kernel and then produces error status of 7. I can't get passed the white screen

Any assistance would be so much appreciated.

Well said is quite the understatement. Has anyone seriously tried doing searches on this site for stuff? Sometimes you do find what you're looking for fairly easily, other times you can't find a damn thing that should be readily available. And if you're in panic mode because you think you just bricked your phone, are you going to search this entire site for an answer that might not show up in your search results? Hell no, you'd probably just create a new thread begging for help.
If you can't contribute and only talk down to people, shut your ass up. No one needs that type of attitude here.

I have to disagree.
First and foremost, give a man a fish... teach a man to fish...
The post you quote seems entirely accurate. The OP could obviously use more research as the answers are available. A little time with google alone will usually lead me to what I seek right here on xda.
I feel that the majority of xda contributors are more than willing to help if you show some indication that you have exhausted all your resources in finding your own solution. Though I do understand that moments of panic occur when nothing seems to work but it is always best as well as more satisfying to try and work through it yourself.
This forum does have a Q and A section that would be perfectly suited to handle this thread. The development section really isn't the place. You will get more welcome responses over there as that is its purpose.
Finally, as a member of this forum, I appreciate that of all the posts in this thread, yours (and suilmagic) were the only post that really did anything to help the OP.

I understand you point and I agree 100% people need to research their problems on a search engine (including the one we have here built in XDA (very handy)) because the majority of time, it will appear right onthe first page if you type your problem correctly, I agree with you. However, some users rather act in a certain way which would describe them as "assholes" if you cant contribute one way or the other why even post at all? if you dont know then theres no need to post unnecessary things. Just dont post and OP will get the picture and look somewhere else.

I agree with this as well though I hesitate at the name calling as it is also unproductive.
I miss the old days when we were all figuring it out together and questions turned to discussions. With the wealth of knowledge that has been built since then I guess some are not as willing to help others work through the problems. I do believe that if this thread had landed in Q&A it would have, or at least should have, received better response.
Well when I was new to this I thought I broke my brand new first day g2 because I got a boot loop (talk about panic mode xD) well I did my research and got it fixed thanks to me making a back up as soon as I flashed cwm...if anything it inspired me to get back at it...my advice back up your original shipping rom before you think about screwing around with stuff well now my g2 hinge is messed up extreamly loose so I'm returning it to stock :'( and sending it in....did I mention I'm 16? Update on HTC G2 Crashed and Bricked
I followed the instructions posted on this site to try and recover my G2 to no avail. After hours with an Android Developer the apparent issue was with the phone's internal memory.
I recieved a replacement and all is good. I've flashed a number of 2.3 roms in addition to roms that have Sense, flashed a kernel or two with no problems.
I hope I don't re create the same condition that started this post. I'm not sure what I did to cause the issue in the fisrt place.
Thanks to all the people out there who tried their best to help.

Glad you got it fixed.
I want to know if any of the Epic developers will consider making a sense 3.0 rom if the opensense sdk provides that possibility. I really don't want an EVO, but I have been in love with sense since I first saw it. Even though people wont admit it this phone is way better, it has stronger glass and is unbrickable since we have Odin. I'm probably not the only one that wants this too.
You should use search next time, it's only been discussed half a dozen times.
There is currently a developer working on it (the same one who is porting MIUI so it's not his only project) but there is a lot of work to be done so don't expect it to be any time soon.

it just annoys me that the first response to almost every thread I see is that somebody should have searched. I'm glad that somebody is working on this, and would you be able to provide some links to more information about it. This might even get me into actual development if it has a possibility of working and if I can get an evo to use while my epic is being used for development

Second "attempt" won't get anywhere, I'm not saying it to be harsh, but to be realistic, the OP doesn't have the necessary skills. It's not the same as "copy-paste" developing, it requires serious skills to write drivers for an entire rom.

Honestly no one wants to hear it from some jackass that TALKED SOOOOOOO MUCH **** ABOUT SOFTWARE ROOT ANYWAY. Follow the rules and search before posting useless information that has been already posted! No one cares that you just found this out and you really don't need to open a thread every time you find something new out. This isn't Twitter. This is why the Dinc2 community is CRAP. No one even wants to Dev for us because some of us are ungrateful jerks. People don't forget, and if I recall correctly let me show you how grateful you are.

go ahead and feel dumb, you should.
kingsway8605 "Sure they don't "advertise" it but they are having their cronies post all over here about some imaginary root. I refer you to my previous post about ignoring it. I would rather not continue to argue with you about something I am obviously right about and risk a mod banning me. When, or actually if, Alphrev releases root, I will admit you were right. But I can promise you that won't happen."
do us all a favor and keep your thoughts to yourself. obviously you type before you think, and I don't care if you said your sorry, you still wrongfully accused the very people who's software YOU are using. they shouldn't have even let you use it personally.
BYE-BYE NOW!

It took me a whole 3 minutes tops, because I know how to use the SEARCH button. and I can't SPAM a USELESS thread, this will be deleted once you waste a Mods time and they get around to it.
EDIT: oh, and if I can type faster than you can read, sorry.
its not worth argueing with him andybones, hes obviously an idiot who simply cant do a search before posting a crappy useless thread
I have to check the website. Curious if there is a way to block users who spam the forum. I actually hope a mod deletes it, nobody wants to hear your useless arguing. As for me creating useless threads, I think I have created 3 threads total so far, and one of them helped quite a few people with their alarm clock issues.
For now I am just going to manually ignore you guys. Type away at me, not even going to bother reading them. I will be the mature one.
Edit: wow, just checked my other thread and you argued with someone else in that thread. Do you actually do anything on this site besides argue with others because reading through your comment history it sure seems like all you do is argue, you are ignored for sure.

You can ignore me all you want. Truth of the matter is, I do help people. You annoy people. Clearly. I don't even need to justify myself. For how many days did you down talk alpharevX, and now use their product? I highly doubt you donated. and I'm not arguing, I'm responding, and my first post was blowing off a little steam because it's people like you who CRAP these threads up.. it's not wonder all the REAL devs left XDA. useless, ungrateful people like yourself. If you have a problem with my post, report it
Is this OTA dump kosher.
I may not be getting OTA in my location. So I went fishing and came across this.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...8-605-4-same-as-the-official-gingerbread-ota/
They claim it is the same as the OTA but since it can be RUU'ed will work on all phones, incl. those with modification to the ROM.
Has anybody tried this one? Also, since I have never gone the RUU route some additional instructions will be most welcome.

If you are not s off, just flash it. If it has been tampered with than the update should fail. It isn't todays ota though, it is the one from a few weeks ago.

Thanks @kingsway8605. This is the only one I could find. About two weeks old. Any other URL's?
Presumably the flashing involved copying the file (with changed name) to SD card root. Remove the USB cable and then do <volume down> + <power>. I hope the follow up is pretty simple and straight forward. I do not have much Android experience.
So many ROM threads exploding with people who flashed their way into a whole bunch of trouble, and don't know how to get out of it.
Hopefully these predicaments are the inspiration many need to learn basic ADB commands after installing the requisite programs/drivers on their cpu. The trouble could have been avoided in the first place by not blindly flashing without reading the well documented issues they may encounter.
1. Read the thread,
2. Read the stickies,
3. If you occasionally like getting into trouble, at least have the proper tools available to get out of it.
4. If not, use search button.
couldn't agree more. what the devs do has taken a lot of work to make stable(ish) for everyone but it can STILL screw your **** up. so people need to be careful.
http://www.galaxynexusforum.com/for...9-basic-commands-newcomers-adb.html#post28883
theres a link that was useful for me, hopefully useful for others. further reading material, is what i guess i can say about it.
^ Can't believe I posted one of "those" threads. Lame.
Edit: just tried to thank you, but I'm thanked out for the day apparently.
If they can't read the original thread, you expect them to read this one?
its a nice thought, but roots back to RTFM, those that should never do

Flashing has become so easy anyone can do it. That's a problem because once they run into a problem they don't know what to do.

Well... From this, they will learn eventually, from to 0 to 1. So they know about the technology of their device rather than just using it. People need to learn...

this is the reason why i always tell ppl not to spoon-feed noobs answers, cuz they wont learn anything and will only mess up their phones and then beg for help by creating useless threads or post in dev threads..on the other hand if ppl didnt answer their question they will be forced to read and learn thus no more useless threads/posts
After learning how to fix my own mistakes and not relying on a toolkit, I've begun to wonder, why they are even around for the Galaxy Nexus.

Haha that's why I stopped helping people in Q+A. I used to help with the whole "Help I'm bricked" topics. Not anymore. My opinion is don't mess with root system files than CAN brick your phone if you don't know what you're doing or at least how to recover from it manually should a problem arise. Let em sweat it before they finally search and figure out ADB. Which they will. Their first instinct is to come and just ask for help. After an hour of 0 replies and the need to use their phone now, they will search and they will find what they need. Not that it matters because you have people here saying just use the toolkit to fix it. Almost every single thread in Q+A has at least one use a toolkit reply.
Idk to be honest I just stopped giving a damn about anyone but me lol. If I tried to help every single person boot looping I'll be on XDA 24/7. I got a nexus, I jumped the gun & used a toolkit. I boot looped. I searched and I figured out what I needed to do to get back up & running. As far as I'm concerned let them do the same. That's the way it is today. Everyone wants to be spoonfed. They only want the end result, but don't wanna work for it.

Well if they brick their own phone, because what they do to it. They will be learn their lesson,...
Once i brick my tab... Then i learn from that to understand the process... About ask for help in web? ... That's out of question.. The only one left is... You and you brick phone.. Since that,i always looking many source of knowledge before do something to my phone..
Anyway android is open source isn't it? If people want to learn.. Why not..? Or it's just change like corporate, monopoly only for certain people...

Opens door to room filled with people who think they are much more intelligent than most, snickers and quietly closes door and walks away.
Uhm. I think this is just another proof of the tiny minded humanity. Doing stuff without knowing a single bit or without thinking about consequences. Just like war. Making it without having a single idea.

My Android knowledge is debatable and it goes without saying that my intelligence is highly debatable.

Hey, as the guy who started the linked thread in the second post here, I've used Wug's Toolkit to save me time before. Yes, I had the knowledge to get myself out of that jam if that didn't work, but I feel the toolkits aren't a bad thing by themselves.

I agree they're not bad at all. People just shouldn't be so fearful of, or think that learning, terminal commands is hard. Posts like the one that was linked are a great starting point, thanks for taking the time to author that post. They can pick up where the toolkits leave off when someone's in trouble.
It kinda frustrates me too. The only reason why I have a low post count is because I know how to search and I can get my self out of pretty much any sticky situation with experience/searching. I don't understand why people automatically blame the dev for something they didn't know what was going on in the first place. I have maybe a 1/10 of the issues everyone else posts because I do the proper steps before hand or I go into it knowing what is already broke. If it is an unstable ROM then why bother complaining, you should know that not everything is going to be perfect.
Same here on the posting count. I read about what I'm going to do, can't afford to brick and buy a new phone.
