I'm gonna root my phone now BUT.... - Desire General

hi guys, as mentioned i am interested in rooting my desire.... below are some details of my desire and questions
- i bought a 2nd hand desire ( i suspect its rooted before *forgot to check* cos it has the superuser icon
- its running the bravo PVT4 S-on currently. Hboot 0.93.0001 Aug 12 2010
- current version: Froyo WWE 2.13.707.2 (suspected the user has applied OTA update) release 274424, baseband version 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2
-------heres comes my question------
rooting should be simple (from what i read using unrevoked)
i will be using unrevoked and creating a goldcard just incase...i will read the rest up.
1) how to remove the superuser icon when i unroot?
2) considering this has the OTA update can i use the official RUU and unroot without issues?
3) will my apps be there after i root?
4) how abt if i restore using rom manager wif the backup i create once after i root, will the apps be there?
PS i am totally new to android and its my first android phone and i dun wanna brick it....i also believe there are alot of nice people here as i have been here since the Touch HD days

1 & 2. You can only unroot by flashing the stock RUU, and I'm pretty sure the one you're on doesn't exist. You can try the .1 RUU on Shipped-ROMs but don't know if it'll work
3. Yes
4. Yes

thanks for replying....
yup, the current one has no official RUU cos i believe its the OTA update
the RUU i can find is 2.13.707.1 (and afew differences) now my concern is if i wanna unroot using this RUU will it work or will it have any complications?
(take note that i am rooting on 2.13.707.2, and some differences in some other numbers)

any help?
thanks

Unless I am mistaken your phone is already rooted. The only way to have the superuser app is if you are rooted.

It should work but I dont think anyone will be able to 'guarantee' it!

Why not return it to stock WWE version by using RRU and start from there?
You will need a goldcard and probably for it not to be SIM-locked.

Vodafone De-branding + Froyo 2.2

Hi, I`m a complete NOOB when it comes to Android, had my HTC Desire a few days now, it came pre-instaled with Vodafone UK bloatware on it.
As far as I know it the OLED version, on box says model A8181
Currentley i have Software v1.24
Hboot v0.83
ALL on a sim locked to vodafone UK.
I was looking at a guide on a different forum for De-branding the Desire.
I have made a Goldcard already
It seems ok but have a few questions:
Is hboot v0.83 ok to begin with for the process ?, i thought v0.80 was the best one ?
I was looking at the Un-revoked3 guide....would the ROOT with that app be done first ?, OR Is it a NEW process after the de-brading ?
thanks
All you'll need is a goldcard. See:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741836
thanks.
Done the Goldcard, looks like the Hboot 0.83 (which I have) is ok from what I can tell, one of my main Questions,
Also can I just ROOT after Installing froyo update, is the unrevoked app ok?, will it mean Re-installing a ROM or does it `add-onto` an existing install ??
cheers.

Don't install Froyo as that'll flash Hboot to 0.92. unrEVOke now and flash a ROM from the Dev forum. There is a rooted stock HTC 2.2 there if you're just looking for Froyo + Root.
I'm using LeeDroid 1.8 ROM on my previously VF bloatwared Desire ('unrevoked' to root), very happy.
Ummm ok, I have tried loads of times to do the De-brand, apparentley the VF software v1.24 I have stops De-branding as it just times out the Bootloader...it eventually gives a `usb error 171` every time.
I tried with the phone set as both usb mode or sync mode makes no difference,
I looked into the Unrevoked 3.1 program and apparentley its not working with Hboot v0.83.
Code:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=748618
try this guide!
Is that 1 ok for OLED Screens like mine though?, also am I OK in ROOTING whlle it still vodafone BRANDED ?
ok....just read the guide linked, IF that works, will I be able to put Offcial HTC ROM + froyo update?, or does it have to be pre-rooted ROM ?
thanks.
You can download stock froyo Rom here and just use that

Easy way to root a stock 2.2 rom?

Hello Guys
Just bought my Desire - but it was pre-installed with the 2.2, is there any easy solution for rooting this?
Downgrade then use unrevoked
Hi Numsefis,
you need to downgrade your phones HBOOT. Read this: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=745903
DaCe
okay.. that's great, but hoped that there would be an easier solution, for the HBOOT 0,92.. But i'll root it and install new firmware... Will you prefer the OpenDesire or Stock ROM?
you will loose your ROM and all settings. The .zip contains a Stock 2.1 ROM. After the downgrade you need to unrevoke and flash a new one.
I'm using this: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775
very nice, will it be possible to make a backup with the HTC function before root, and then restore when rooted?
What's the Radio package for?
The Backup only stores personal Data. Your ROM will be gone. After unrevoking your phone you will have the Nandroid BackUp.
Basically, the radio rom is the firmware that runs the phone, wireless and blutooth portions of the phone. Newer versions are likly to improve performance or fix bugs.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=687464
OK thanks....
Then i root the phone, install 2,2 then make a nandroid backup when the phone is configured... And also install the radio fix...
Hopefully i can get paid apps in my market
downgrade -> unrevoke -> radio -> rom -> enjoy

ps: sry for double post
Thx alot for the info, but my phone was running HBOOT 0,92, so i think it's okay
from my link
Q. What is the difference between HBOOT 0.83 and 0.92?
A. 0.92 is installed if you apply the official OTA froyo update. If you care about rooting and custom ROMs, you want to avoid the OTA update currently.
Q. How do I downgrade to HBOOT 0.80?
A. Don't - there is no reason to. If you want to root or use a custom ROM or debrand there is no need to. If you have an SLCD screen, the current method for downgrading will break your screen.
Q. Can I debrand my phone with HBOOT 0.83?
A. Yes. If your software version is 1.21.405.2 or lower (for example, branded O2 phones), you can simply use this RUU with a goldcard to debrand and install stock 1.21.405.2. You can then upgrade to OTA froyo if you wish to. This RUU will also flash your HBOOT to 0.83.

can't get unrevoked to find my phone.... :S
have you installed the USB Driver like the html document says?
Yep, got it working, the guide i read, missed a step, that the ADB driver should be installed under Restore....
Now i got my phone rooted, and installed the Market fix... BUT i can't see that the market is unlocked for all programs???

[Q] ROM identification

hello,
i bought HTC Desire A8181 (from carphonewarehouse, UK), it came with 2.1-update 1, now it is 2.2 (2.29.405.5). i want to play with custom ROM. the following questions came to my mind. if I want to go back to untouched ROM? [i have not flashed my fone with custom ROM yet, but I want to. I want to understand the options. its a precautionary step I am taking]
1. how do I identify the RUU number for HTC A8181?
2. what is signed RUU?
3. if rooted with unrevoked3 but not flashed custom ROM can i receive HTC OTA updates?
5. what really changes when i root with unrevoked3?
sorry if my quarries sounds stupid, i am new to android, and learning the way of android.
tanx a lot

You match it to the version on your phone (2.29.405.5) - simple!!

Once rooted you CAN'T get OTA updates as it'll screw things up

1) An RUU doesn't have a 'number' I am aware of, generally they are region or network provider specific. So being in England I would use the stock O2, Vodafone, Orange etc, RUU, or use any non-specific WWE (World Wide English) RUU.
2) A signed RUU is one that hasn't been modified and will run on any stock phone, the phone will only let you install a non modified RUU by default, I believe. (My definition maybe a little off here)
3) If you have changed nothing on the phone from stock, you can still recieve OTA updates, yes. Installing a custom ROM will stop you being able to use the OTA update feature.
5, lol) And to quote binary visions from AndroidForums
Rooting it doesn't fundamentally change the phone (it only provides the ability to fundamentally change the phone)

Essentially it's just an app in the app drawer than enables you to have administrative control over your phone. If you never use a program that requires 'root' access as it's known, It'll do nothing. If a program requires 'root' access, it'll just give you the ability to run it. Kinda like a school that locks the Control Panel on Windows from the school kids, stopping them from changing screen resolution and messing about with the PC.

1. Yes
2. HBOOT 0.93
3. Yes

thanks EddyOS and Kalavere.
I m feeling a bit confidant now.
but......................................
what is the meaning
[Kalavere] "If you have changed nothing on the phone from stock, you can still recieve OTA updates" (no custom rom)
and
[EddyOS] "Once rooted you CAN'T get OTA updates as it'll screw things up"
another stupid question - if i install any custom rom will it change IMEI no?
if i install RUU after, will it change IMEI no. (will any device specific number change)?
tanxa lot
IMEI can't be changed as it's hardcoded onto the phone
Once rooted it's not recommended to accept an OTA update, it'll remove root but not be 100% unrooted and cause more issues than it's worth so don't do it

rooting 2.2

I know this question has been asked a lot of time, but im android noob and i didnt find on google anything simple to me..
Can I root my wildfire 2.2 ?
i was searching and they say i need to downgrade to v2.1 and i found something they say i can root v2.2 . But how to downgrade ?
I want to root him cuzz i want to install v2.3
and sorry for my bad english but i think you can understand...
if u r on android 2.2 with hboot 1.01 then u cannot root by any software method as far as now. A paid, expensive hardware solution (xtc clip) is available presently to root your phone. It not only roots ur phone, but also turns ur phone to S-OFF.
There is a Noobs Guide to downgrade from 2.2 to 2.1
But with that, even if u downgrade to 2.1, ur hboot will remain the same which still makes the phone unrootable. Now make ur choice, do u want unrootable eclair or unrootable froyo on your device. I hope u wont opt for eclair.
just search for a while lol. It has been answered many times here on xda.
sorry, but what is hboot and how can i know is my hboot 1.01 ? :S

HBOOT of wildfire is similar to the BIOS of a computer motherboard.
to know about ur phone hboot, just switch off the device and then by holding volume down key press the power button. there will be something displayed on the screen like,
BUZZ PVT SHIP S-ON or
BUZZ PVT SHIP S-OFF.
it also says ur hboot version. u can root if ur hboot version is 0.80.x but i dont think u have that version.
it says
BUZZ PVT SHIP S-ON
hboot-1.01.0001
then,it can not be rooted ?

That tutorial in the above link (A solution for downgrade cn froyo2.2) works for those who flashed the previously leaked chinese version of froyo. That chinese version of froyo doesn't have the hboot 1.01 (not to be sure but i think it has the hboot 0.83).
Many people are getting confused with that thread. One thing is pretty sure that, as far as now the hboot 1.01 with s-on cannot be rooted with any software methods [Or even hboot 1.01 cannot be downgraded to 0.80 untill today]
recently @dannyjmcguinness has successfully downgraded the hboot 1.01.0002 to hboot 1.01.0001 with s-on. But it gives nothing to users because both those hboots are unrootable. It might lead to some good news in the future.

hi, I'm new register member here, but i read forum for a long time, and it was very useful. Now i have one question and decide to register and ask.
The thing is, i have wildwire, hboot is 0.80.007, i rooted with unrevoked and i instal RUU_Buzz_HTC_WWE_1.37.405.1_Radio_13.53.55.24H_3.35.19.25_release_151892_signed.
Today i found this thread [ROM]Safe Buzz_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.22.405.1 | No Hboot | No Radio | No Rooted & Rooted and instal rooted version. Now I'm 2.21 software version, i can move apps to sd card, and above all i think I'm still rooted.
My question is how this is possible if they said that froyo can't be rooted, and advice is not to upgrade to 2.2 version.

u said that ur hboot is 0.80.0007 and rooted with unrevoked and then installed the 1st RUU. But installing that official RUU will make ur phone unrooted.
And that [ROM]Safe Buzz_Froyo is a rooted rom with both "no rooted" and "rooted" versions. U said that u installed the rooted version. ok fine.
Actually im on unrootable official froyo with hboot 1.01 and S-ON from the past 4 months. I havent tried any rooted official roms to say whether u r still rooted or not. I have the doubt whether rooted official roms can be installed only in the rooted wildfire or not. I expect they can be installed only in the rooted wildfire (as they are zip files, not exe files). If that is the case, then ur phone is still rooted. I would search and let u know if i got confirmed.
Alternatively, u can check it with "root only" apps like busybox. have a try

Pretty sure it is possible. Because it is not like, "FROYO CANT BE ROOTED". The point is wildfire HBOOT 1.01 with S-ON can't be rooted. WILDFIRE ROOT depends on hboot and nand security flag. And rooting (in NAND locked devices) has nothing to do with eclair or froyo or gingerbread . And what everyone needs to know here is, "official update not only updates the os to froyo but also updates other things like hboot, radio, recovery (which solely makes the phone unrootable)".
That is the reason why they removed the hboot and radio in the above rooted rom u have mentioned.
thanks for reply, now the things come to a place
something like that was on my mind but i was unsure and confused.
Im installed zip file from sdcard, power on with volume down, etc... now i tried some terminal app where they said that if you type su, it will ask for super user permission and # sign need to appear instead of $ sign. It worked like a charm so i think that im still rooted
So ''don't update to froyo'' thing is only for those users who want OTA update, because of hboot updating, and unable to root new hboot?
Do you know what would be happened that i installed RUU_Buzz_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.22.405.1_Radio_13.55.55.24H_3.35.20.10_release_160191_signed, Will my hboot become 1.xxx?

U have got super user permissions. So, yes ur phone is rooted for sure. That is what root means actually (getting su permissions).
Yes, that "don't update to froyo" warning is only for users who wish to make the OTA update (without loosing root) from htc.
And again yes, by installing that RUU, ur HBOOT will become 1.01 because it had the latest Radio_13.55.55.24H_3.35.20.10
--Official ruu / ota updates with Radio_13.55.55.24H_3.35.20.10 will always have the HBOOT 1.01.000x

[Q] What could be the issue with me installing OTA 2.3?

Hi guys just tried to install the 2.3 OTA update that came through today.
Problem is as soon as I try it reboots to the exclamation mark and android symbol.
I am ENG S-OFF Radio S-OFF Sim Unlocked and Perm Rooted.
I did however change my CID to the standard HTC 001.
What could be the issue? I'm not getting any error notifactions or if I am I don't know where to find them?
Any advice?
Have you removed any system apps? Or any of the bloatware they pack in stock builds?
No the only thing I have done is to permroot with Visionary and add radio s-off and supercid now I changed the cid back to stock in prep for the update coming. The ROM is completely standard and stock.
My current version and build info is as follows:
Android Version
2.2
Baseband Version
12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M
Kernel Version
2.6.32.21-gf3f553d
[email protected] #1

Build Number
1.32.405.6 CL278359 release-keys
Software Number
1.32.405.6
Browser Version
WebKit 3.1
Oh and when trying to use this tool after the failed OTA update attempt to change radio s-off back to on to see if that worked the program no longer seems to work returning failed probably connection errors: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537
Thanks for the quick reply.
Same problem as I have in my thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081923&page=2
I think its becuase we have S-OFF that we cant get the update. I'd like to know how to get S-OFF back on
If you're both rooted, etc... Why don't you try Seraphics rooted GB ROM?
You can flash it via recovery and is completely stock, other than having root access.
You can find the thread HERE and the ROM HERE
I wouldn't mind knowing how to get S-OFF back on. Starting to wish I didn't root as I cant even get an OTA.
Same problem
I had the same problem ealier today. Yellow ! when the update shuts down the phone, but take out the battery and it loads back 2.2 up..
Tried undoing changes I could remember making- the radio s-off, rooting and the CID. Only other thing I could think of was trying to take clockworkmod recovery off the phone.
I decided just to flash this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1059563
...If you can flash roms, this is probably gonna be much the same as the update.
In the end I was actually pretty disappointed with it. I've tried RCMIX kingdom ROM which has elements of sense3 in it. I hadn't done my research and expected sense 3 with this update.
Thanks for the suggestions guys but I'll be frank and say custom roms aren't interesting me. I use Launcher Pro and make my own lockscreens for all my visual customisations and haven't seen any ROM that does anything out the ordinary other than tweaks.
Its knocked my confidence in using anything off here especially when the tool to s-off supercid and simunlock says its simple enough to go back where in reality after attempting OTA something in the settings somewhere has changed and screwed it up.
The ROM I linked to isn't a custom ROM. Its stock HTC gingerbread with root.

Thanks had a looked more in detail at the rom you linked to and have to say I'm convinced and can't be bothered with OTA anymore lol Decided to stop sitting on the fence and throw myself at the dev communities mercy lol Those using the Easy Radio tool won't be able to go back to s-on unless rooted and to do so ensure that you haven't denied access to an unamed process called "Unknown" in your superuser app as this refers to the radio tools access.
