CAUTION: IM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR MESSING UP YOUR DOCK OR PHONE, DO AT YOUR OWN RISK...
ok on to the mod. I did this mod to the OEM dock because I think it was a dumb choice to use the usb plug when you have the 3-pins, plus the usb will damage your phone when trying to fight the phone in to place...
so here are the pics:

buy: glue, battery pins...
remove the rubbery buttom its held by double sided tape, then remove 4-screws..
then you will get to the board.. its held down by 3-screws
then you can either, remove the wires and solder you it back or u can cut it.. you basically need positive and negative wires since the pins doesn't transfer data through it...
now to the top part.. it is all held in buy glue but its still built really well.. I opened it by prying at the top corner... you will find out that that is the best spot to start to open the dock with minimal cosmetic damage...
then you just work your way around the seems untill it opens up
once open this is what you see... careful not to lose the white plug... now you can take the usb plug and cut it, since its no longer useful...
now the hard part is to try and get the holes aligned right....
once aligned, glue the battery pins and solder... black is ground, green connected to black wire, and red is positive.. (yes i need more soldering practice )
and finally...

any questions let me know....
thanks for looking
Wow. Bravo.
This is how the dock should have been in the first place. Excellent Work OP. By the way. Where did you get the dock pins from?
Just brilliant
Very cool, might be a good weekend project!
Just wish the base dock wasn't so much money :/
Does it charge any faster using the pins rather than USB?
Do you have the part number(s) of the charging pins and where you got them from?
Also, it looks like you have a couple of different sizes.

Thanks everyone..
It still shows charging status as usb, trying to figure out how to chance it to ac instead...
I got the pins from allied electronics under battery connectors # 100671.. I used the smaller pins, but you can use the bigger ones aswell...

If you do sell them fully completed, I'd gladly pay you the price of the dock that T-Mobile sells and then some, as its much better and you put a lot of time and other parts into it.

Does the audio out still work? If so, is the sound quality decent?
Great job OP, much better then stock POS they're trying to sell for $50.
Couple of quick questions:
Does bluetooth turn on automatically when you put in the dock?
Is 3.5mm headphone jack covered or can audio-out cable be still plugged in?
At what price point would it be profitable for you to start taking orders for these?

I went to the TMO store with the intent of buying one and changed my mind once I saw the size. They add a lot of thickness and they have a lump on the side where the USB connector hooks up to the phone.

could you go back and get a picture of it next to stock phone, so we can see the size comparison?
I'm really amazed at how reluctant manufacturers (HTC?) are to utilize the damn charging contacts on the side of the phone! Seriously, what moron thought it would be a better idea to have a skin with a huge lump on the side to house a USB plug instead of simply wiring three small contacts into side of the skin? Come on! Pull your head out of your a$$es HTC!

This is pretty much the correct answer.
I don't understand it either. The pins were one of the reasons I decided to keep this phone over the Nexus S. I assumed we would get all kinds of cool accessories that made use of them. Alas, nothing.
Depressing, indeed.
I was excited about this accessory, until I saw that giant lump on the side. It's pretty ridiculous, if you ask me.
The Nexus One had the pins as well, during the life of the phone the only two items to use them were the HTC desk dock and car dock. Manufacturers seem to forget about them.
Whats so great about the pins anyway?
Saw it and I'll pass on this too...wth were they thinking on this one!

I love my nexus dock granted it didn't come issue free (won't dock right if not seated properly) but it automatically goes to clock mode and I had it hooked up to my stereo where I streamed/listed to my music docked/undocked.

Pins are great, you don't have to plug in your phone to charge your phone. All you do is just set it to the dock. Now for pins on a car dock, it automatically goes to carmode. I just hope if tmobile makes a cardock they learned from the mistakes of the nexus ver and add a 3.5mm jack in the back.

The pins are larger, and can allow for greater amperage depending on the internal circuitry. The Nexus One car dock would charge my phone *incredibly* fast; it was awesome. It was the one charger that could keep up with (and easily surpass) the discharge rate of the battery when using Google Navigation.

Ive wondered about this myself. I have one (got it for christmas), and while my battery life has increased, it seems to be getting worse and worse, especially if I ever go without the skin (ie, to charge the skin and still be able to use the phone). I swear, I was in the car on the way to college and had half the battery drain in oon hour powerskin was depleted. Mind you, that skin lasted a good 7+ hours, but then my phone nearly died before i got to school to charge it.
this thing is quite epic fail. i dont even mind the bulge its the fact that it keeps charging the battery at all times which scares the crap outta me. price is cheap at 40 but still not worth it. returning it tomorrow.
My Review
I have had this power skin for a week and I overall Like it. One thing this doesn't help is from not shattering the screen.. Because I shattered mine day 2 I had this powerskin, but I overall enjoy it and I don't even worry about the battery anymore.
A trick and something I noticed to make it not to always charge your device is if you charge just the powerskin by itself and unplug it then put your phone in it. It will not charge your phone until you turn it on by pressing the button on the back.
If you need more battery juice and longer battery life I suggest you get you will notice a difference.
I dont even know which tmobile stores are selling powerskins for this phone
just call and ask. alot of stores have them cause of the cancer lump on the side of the phone lols.

I've just received the kidigi car dock from China for £25.
This thing is brilliant both in build quality and in looks.
It's held firmly to the windscreen with a sucker that has a lever to grip and release it from the glass.
The included charger shows as ac in power menu and actually charges the phone whilst with GPS,screen and Bluetooth on.
It even holds the phone with the case left on!!!

When you put the phone in the dock it automatically goes into car mode(this can be disabled in the app).
There are finger nuts on the arm of the dock so it can be adjusted to the right angle.
the phone is held secure with no vibration.
I couldn't recommend this more.

Already took the plunge and ordered one of these myself before reading this review. Got mine from a different seller for £22.58. How thick is your case? I've got a firm gel one that is probably 2mm thick (its great btw already dropped it and it bounced nicely cushioning the blow). I am just concerned that it may be a bit too fat for the cradle.
The dock comes with a detachable holder look carefully at the photo you can see a black square hole where it clips in which I have removed. it will fit normal size or with a case. My case is plastic and about 2mm thick all round so you will be fine .it looks like theres enough room for a case to be a bit thicker and still fit
If you got the cheaper sellers link ill put it in the op

Don't seem to have this problem. Tried both ways and it was charging AC both times. I didn't use the bundled power cable though because I already have a HTC cable that is stretched across the dashboard so I didn't see the point in stretching another cable.
A simply excellent car mount. Fits wonderfully with the case on and feels very secure.
Has anyone got the version with built in handsfree?
I'm thinking of ordering one but would want the audio out for music. kidigi's site http://www.kidigi.com/product_lv2.php?pid=1378 lists it as having a 2.5mm headphone jack but i wanted to know if it was stero or mono before i forked out ~£35.
Anyone know?
look great thanks man
Can anybody confirm whether the mounting on the back of the Kidigi car dock is a standard Herbert Rickter fitting?

What? how can you possibly go over 3 aux cables in a month??
Anyway use the cheapest and shortest usable one, there is no improvement from the more expensive ones, they usually suck more than the cheap ones (ie anything from monster and similar companies just suck your money away with their directional cables...). The plastics of today are not that bothered by the sun and even the cheapest ones will outlive you.

Were they the ones with an L shaped connector or straight ones? Avoid cheap L shaped ones, they actually do suck and get broken inside the connector. Use ones with a straight plug and anything over 10€ for 1m is a straight rip off.

It's just $2.60, about the same to ship it...pretty hard to beat considering the quality and beauty of the cable you get. I have nothing but Monoprice cables for my home theater setup, been using them for about 6yrs now and no complaints. Great product, great prices and great customer service to match.
Just get a cheap retractable cable from eBay.
I bought a Kensington Car Aux Cable on ebay for like $4. They use lower frequencies which help if your audio app has a "preamp". It's been alive for over 8 months, this is a rare thing when it comes to ebay aux cables.

Monoprice is my recommendation also. Never had a problem with their items and never an issue with quality.
So my Epic 4g touch has a fried microphone.
I am not new on opening up phones, replacing flex cables, or lcd screens etc because it is very simple. But now this requires soldering and all that from the motherboard.
That is what I need help with, I do not just want to jump on it right away... I do not even know where the microphone is honestly.
Also to kill two birds with one stone, I need to do the same for the USB Port.
Why not just buy a epic touch with a broken LCD and make one phone out of two. Ribbon cables are one thing but soldering a tiny phone.. I have some experience soldering but I would have to feel pretty brave to do it on a phone.

im too lazy to take mine apart to look at the motherboard right now, however looking at the pictures of the motherboard on ifixit it looks like there are only two traces running to it, and its surface mount...not sure how you would go about lifting it, as i'm assuming the amount of heat required to do so, even using a proper re-flow station (dont think a heatgun will work for this one! its a little smaller than an xbox 360 mainboard!) would negativity affect/destroy the microphone itself...furthermore I'm not at all sure how you would go about sourcing a replacement microphone... I can't imagine Samsung would be able to send you one... now that I mention samsung though, these things have a one year warranty, you may want to contact them and ask about getting it serviced from them... I know some people with emmc bricks have had success with getting repair work done directly by samsung.
the usb port is easier though, de-solder the 4 posts holding it in place, and then very carefully using your iron and something like an xacto knife very carefully lift the pins connecting it to the motherboard... scavenge a similar one from a suitable donor device, solder the posts into place and then just use your iron lightly to push the pins back into the solder left on the pads... I've not done a micro usb before but have successfully replaced several hdmi ports using this method, same thing, only smaller with fewer pins... good luck with it...

Unfortunately I have no insurance, but the way I see it is that if these guys can do it http://cellphone-repair-shop.com/samsung-microphone/ then I should be able to do it. (I really wanna do it as well not only to just fix it but to also learn something new if you understand). Also, I can use the same microphone from an AT&T Captivate which I found for $9.99 on ebay. Tomorrow I will post a picture of the motherboard and the location of the microphone.
newalker91 said:
In order to do it you'll need to use a precision heat gun to warm up the microphone, then use something like a razor blade to pop it off of the board. Regular soldering irons aren't used for this type of placement, you'll have to cold solder it in place making sure to get a good solder joint around the edge to keep it lined up perfectly with the contact points on the board.

Interesting. So you're telling me I can't use de-soldering wire...
Then wouldn't it be the same to heat up the razor and pop it up? Sounds barbaric but that was the first thing that popped in my head after I read your post.
And since the mic hardly has any electricity that runs through it and is so tiny would it be better to use that carbon based electrical glue?

(I really wanna do it as well not only to just fix it but to also learn something new if you understand). Also, I can use the same microphone from an AT&T Captivate which I found for $9.99 on ebay. Tomorrow I will post a picture of the motherboard and the location of the microphone.

Oh I totally understand why you would want to do it yourself, I had thoughts on how to do it because I do the same sort of stuff whenever possible... I think the guy that posted afterme/you had some really good thoughts as well, only thing I wanted to add is that I was not referring to any sort of insurance, but to the 1 year Samsung manufactures warranty on the parts

Yeah I have no type of insurance at all. My phone is going for two years now...
Nevertheless here are the pictures of the microphone and motherboard

The one circled in blue is the earpiece sound receiver I assume since it is connected to the earpiece or could be a secondary mic for the camcorder although this phone is not known to have two mics. Regardless of the fact, it remains irrelevant just wanted to point it out
The one circled red I am sure is the microphone since it is located right on the bottom where the mic hole on the phone housing is on.
As you can see it is pretty tiny. Any ideas?

Relax finally, busy work recently, i saw the above comment, most of them are not a professional phone repair man, of course ,i have no other means, i just want t share a magic product with you guys, it is really a nice product.
I purchased the goods from a china team, they have shop in amazon, aliexpress, and their own WEB, but i choose the amazon, i guess you know this why.
It can support 5-8p. if you want to know more about this, you can contact me.
Weekend project. Rip apart my WCP-700 Qi charger, remove the guts, and then integrate it all into the ash tray of my car. Here's how it turned out.
All mocked up, held things in with hot glue. Not worried about how it looks since I'm going to be covering it once the electronics work.

This is the 12v to 19v converter I used. Ordered a cheap cigarette lighter adapter from amazon to do the conversion. The WCP-700 needs a 19v (?) 500ma power source. The one I found output 19v, 1.5A.
Almost finished product, it all works with the exception of the cover.
Video of the final product! Wanted to keep the ash tray door and the 12v power source, I think I did pretty well.
That's awesome.. Great thing to have

May I ask where you'd purchase a qi wireless charger? I don't see it on Amazon and ebay says it's not listed anymore

Bought it off of amazon a few weeks ago, looks like they ran out I was looking to buy another once since I ripped this one to shreds. :\
Hah, looks like you won the race
Questions:
Did you use the Amazon charger that I put in the other thread, or did you find a better option?
You mentioned an issue with the N4. Was this position based, or do you think it's a power/signal issue?
Thanks!
Ben

1. I used the LG WCP-700
2. I think it's a little bit of both. The way the transmit coil sits in the ash tray, it ends up being a little crooked. I think the glass back on the N4 is just think enough to prevent it from working correctly. The coil I bought for my S3 is a tiny bit offset as it is, plus it only has a super thin plastic back to go through.

Thanks, sorry, I should be more specific on query #1. I was asking about which 12V DC adapter you purchased on Amazon, not about the LG pad itself.
Thanks,
Ben
Can anyone give me a short physics lesson as to how wireless charging works? (Not kidding btw) I'm fascinated by this sort of stuff

Used this one off of Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004J0Y87S/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00
Note, the plug is too large. I soldered all the connections so I wasn't interested in matching up the plugs anyway. The stock plug on the LG looks to be about 3mm OD, center positive.
Looks good, I'm not sure about having to press the phone down in there like that, I think that would scratch the sides at some point?
Other than that, pretty awesome. I liked my wireless charging mod, but I finally stopped using it because I wanted a protective case.

Here is my simple question.
Did you try running the Qi charger with a 12v input before doing your stepup to 19v?
I have read at least two people who claim that even though the input is rated at 19v it will work with 12v.
It makes sense to me that 12v would work since the output is only 5v anyhow.
I know your setup is all need already but can you or anyone else confirm if that is true or not?
Really quite interested in a mod like this but I don't really like the idea of stepping 12v up to 19v back down to 5v if I don't have to.
And I would also rather not spend the extra $12 if I don't have to.
Thanks!
Nice work! What kind of car is this btw? I like the layout of the center console.
