Pretty sad that I have to resort to these "unofficial builds" due to the incompetency of Samsung/Sprint (not sure who to blame). These delays in getting out new code to what I would consider their flagship device is BEYOND SAD.
Anyway, early on we got the DK builds fairly quick. Any idea why DL is taking so long to leak?

I am specifically asking about DL development builds. They should go into general??? Really????
Yes, really. Your threads have nothing to do with development, hence they are in the wrong section. Take a look at the General Section for examples of what kinds of threads go there.
My understanding is that the development forum is for threads containing ROMs, kernels, WIP development threads... Not threads with questions asking why we don't have this or that. Who cares about a DL build anyway? As far as leaks go, DK28 is super clean. The devs here have done some killer work with it too. Personally, I don't care about another leak unless it's maybe Gingerbread.

None of the D builds matter anymore. New year, new letter. We are at EA right now. E being 2011, A being January.
I know this. But we are all still running D builds because we STILL haven't gotten a leak this year. It's been a whole week! We should have JELL-O by now.

It might be fruitful to list the features you hope to see in a new 2.2 leak which are not present in the most recent leaked 2.2 version.
Yay another "where's my update that I'm entitled to" thread.

There is a Q&A section at the top of this dev forum. And by the way the rules do say to ask ALL questions in the General section or Q&A.
why CANT we have have a Q & A like the real popular phones? does it really matter that much

Apparently Sprint doesn't see the Epic as their flagship device. Actually pretty sure they don't. They have the Evo at the top of their list.

Ok so in all the leak excitement going around I missed this. Was the official 2.6.32 kernel source released by HTC or do we in some way have this source?
Q&A is over there ----------->
And no, the source has not been released. They, legally, have 30 days after OFFICIAL release of the software to open source it.

lol Guys, let's just ignore the GPL. HTC does. I'm serious. There's no sense in arguing over the GPL because it doesn't matter to HTC. My question was answered. I saw some FroYo kernels for Sense 2.2 and was just wondering if it was 2.6.29 or 2.6.32. Question answered. Thread over. Thanks again.

They are using an older leaked kernel. The latest OTA officially isn't out yet (which you already know) and that means the latest kernel and it's source is yet to be released. Once the New official OTA Froyo comes out, the newer kernel source will come after that, and then they will have everything working 100%. Now, they may get everything working beforehand, but I'm just saying at the very latest that is when everything will be working.
I already emailed HTC about releasing the source by the way. Here's the response:
Thank you for taking the time to contact us in regards to the source code for the newest update to the Evo 4G. Although the update is not officially available until August 3rd, HTC will typically publish on developer.htc.com the Kernel open source code for recently released devices and software as soon as possible. HTC will normally publish this within 90 to 120 days. This time frame is within the requirements of the open source community. Thank you for your patience.

It means before the open source community gets too pissy. So long as they release within that timeframe, any legal action would it be pursued immediately after release of the build without source wouldn't have gotten anywhere before any issues were entirely mitigated by the release of the source.

Whether or not the question has to do with the development or not, it's still a question... Now, if the question has to do with something specific IN the Development forum, then it belongs in that specific thread, NOT in a new post.
If you were posting a link or actual source for this, then it would be development material. But there is no material, no link, no anything, it's just a question.
This forum is for developers to post roms, source codes, modifications and other things of that nature.
The Q&A Forum is basically for ANY AND ALL questions that do not pertain to a specific thread already listed here.
It's not rocket science.

Just to clear things up, this isn't actually a Dev thread. It's a request, and therefore should not be in dev.
General - general technical discussion items, news, anything else that does not fit into the other fora categories.
Q&A (Questions and Answers) - all questions, irrespective of type, get posted in here whether they be theme related, accessory related, technical, etc.
Accessories - any items to do with components and/or accessories relating to your device.
Rom Development - only meant for very advanced technical discussion directly related to ROM development activity and the delivery of actual ROMs and ROM components ONLY. Nothing else goes in here.
Themes & Apps - anything to do directly with the development of themes and/or applications. Nothing else goes in here.
MOD EDIT: BEFORE POSTING ANY THREAD IN THE DEVELOPMENT SECTION, PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING:
If you have developed a ROM, or are working with others to do so, the development forum is somewhere to discuss and share ideas, post useful feedback and logs or crash dumps, and to discuss a common goal developers are trying to achieve.
It is NOT the place to post your question because it gets higher traffic, or because more experienced users frequent it. Doing this just annoys those who are working on the device, and drives them away. Developers don't want to wade through 20 threads of "Help me urgently" to find their threads for porting and fixing camera issues etc. Similarly, if a thread is designated as discussion for developers say, porting a camera fix, please do not post in there asking "When will it be ready?", "Can I flash this yet?" etc. This is both completely disrespectful to those working on the project (you evidently haven't read the important posts in the thread), and also is making it harder for developers to find comments from other developers or testers when required.
Similarly, don't make loads of "Thanks for your work here" posts in an active development thread. It's just as annoying to developers as asking when something will be ready. If a ROM is complete, then go ahead and thank the developer if you wish, but don't go into threads for devs only, and interrupt it to post "thanks". It's basically spamming, and is treated as such.
If you are posting in development, you should have read every sticky and notice there, and should be actively developing or helping in the development of something. Developing isn't installing a ROM, or using a tweak, it's creating a ROM or other hack or tweak. If you haven't read for several days before starting out on XDA, you are likely about to ask something already solved. I registered on XDA when I first wanted to post, and that was to join in a discussion on something. Sure, join up and ask a question, but read the information available in General and Q&A first, as your question will have been asked before. Search is your friend here, become familiar with it.
Regarding when to post in development if you are not actually developing something, there is one occasion where it's acceptable. If you find a leak of a new ROM, which isn't already posted, and you verify it's legitimacy via either running it, or based on the source you obtained it from, then this is assisting in development, and should be posted in development. If you want to ask when a leak will be available use search first, then if not already in discussion, open a thread in general or Q&A.
If you have a problem flashing a ROM, this is NOT related to development. It's up to you to determine if it is specific to a particular ROM, and post useful information in that developer's existing thread for the ROM. If it happens on more than one ROM, and isn't a known issue (remember you should read several times more words than you post), then find out what you are doing wrong. Check guides written by others, try to repeat the problem and see if it happens every time. Something needs to be reproducible to be fixed effectively.
Once you have identified what you need help with go to the device Q&A forum (general if device lacks one), and make a clear, informative thread that explains the issue, and what you have tried doing to fix it. Did you re-download the ROM? Did you ask a friend to flash it for you, to reduce chance of user error? What steps (exactly) did you follow? What errors did you see (exact wording)? Did you double check all the steps? Did you do a wipe or hard reset?
If you make a clear, concise, yet detailed post, you will find help forthcoming, and should get the problem sorted very quickly. If someone suggests you try something, report back on what happened, did it work etc. Then, next time someone has this issue and searches, they will find this and have a verified and tested solution.
So remember... before you start a thread in development, ask yourself what you are developing. If you can't answer, then stop, step away from the post button, and think about where you are posting. Would it be better in General or Q&A, or is some more time with your best friend, search, required?

Is it just me or shouldn't be mandatory to have the dates entered in the titles of threads in the development sections? I know it's mandatory throughout many other device forums, I'm not sure why it isn't on this one, and others that I've seen. I believe is makes everything much easier to follow rather than a sling of rom names and / or version numbers, etc.
I'm on the fence on this because I'm so appreciative of the Devs who support the T989 with quality Roms.
On one hand I think they should run their threads however they like with reason but on the other it would make keeping up with development a whole lot easier.
I remember when the ICS leak dropped I was all kinds of confused (still am a little) on their update frequencies. This made it a bit more difficult to pinpoint a Devs work ethic (which I factor in as well as quality) because it was untimely coupled with posts from anybody bumping threads up for any reason.
M&S has one of the best titles to his threads because he updates the date, and Rom version with titles so I can't miss his from a mile away.
With that said it would be nice to have dates (especially for those who don't frequent XDA daily) or in the least change the Rom versions in the title.
I don't mind searching but it would be quicker/efficient for dates.
Can you imagine when TMob drops the official ICS...
Not sure how Dates will help? Revision is just the same, forcing a Date to be Posted wont make the Revision any newer...
this is imo that is, most times you can just check the last time the posted was edited to know when it was last updated.

I don't mind searching a bit to see an OP's timestamp edits.
However, the dates imo help with breaking down a Rom's status quicker by scrolling the forum threads by title without much digging than that.
I think the dates would help those who aren't on XDA much because they can catch up quicker on Rom changes.
Also, I think it's easier for those use the XDA app primarily because (as far as I've searched) it doesn't readily show timestamps for edits in OPs.
I don't view titling threads with dates as increasing development speeds just readily available info. I hope others don't as well, cause great things come over time
The devs don't do enough already...lets add more BS. Dl

the only difference between last modified on the op and a date in the title is that last modified could be fixing a typo or something. imo, revision number is just as good, but one or the other is/should be necessary because just checking the thread title is easy (i.e. i'm lazy). though, some revision numbers are inconsistent. and a date usually makes it easy to tell if something is based off the newest leak or not (which THAT should be mandatory: the android version number and the build/leak it's based off cause i've seen a bunch of roms missing that basic info in the op).
Imposing too many rules on devs who provide a free service is a bad idea. Leave things the way they are.
I vote no.
I think it should be mandatory for users to open a thread and read the op and changelog before asking if there was an update. Derp.

suggesting rules on someone who is giving away something for free ......
well im sure you can get my drift.
be thankful, and do a little more reading.
To add with previous comment. There is no need to cater to people who want to flash a ROM without reading OP. ROM Manager tried to do this and all that ended up happening is people bricking their device because they got used to flashing without reading and as soon as a International s2 ROM was accidently posted in t989 rom section you had people bricking.
I vote no, the developers can choose to post and manage their threads how they see fit....besides...its not that hard to open up the thread and look at the bottom of the OP and see the last time it was updated...
Yes, yes and yes. Why is it a big deal to let people know by looking at a thread title when it was updated? Why make someone open a thread and search for when it was revised? If you are putting a revision number in there, why not a date? It is not so much imposing a rule as it is a valid suggestion to help the end user. Is it really that big of a request that someone would stop developing because they were asked to put a date in the title? Getting real tired of hearing all the crying about devs doing this for free as well. If you are going to post work on a forum you are going to get requests, you may get criticism, you will definitely get repeat questions and people that have no clue. Yes it is free, and it is on your own time and all that, but no one is forcing anyone to come here either.
I do appreciate the work that is done here, I would probably still be using a cry phone if it wasn't for this community and having the ability to customize my device. So thank you to all the devs that do this because they enjoy doing it.

Appreciate the honesty as opposed to voting one way and posting another.
On the other hand I do think its funny but not unexpected that people think it is asking too much to ask people to posts only dev related information in dev topics or not post duplicate questions (ie read before posting) but its not too much to ask for a new rule on devs.
Gimme gimme gimme some more.

posting trash in dev threads and not being arsed to read thread edit dates and track version numbers of development that interests you are two different things, but both bad habits that users could possess
the fact that every dev posts a change log just makes this suggest even more ridiculous.
Keep micromanaging the devs to death and they will just go elsewhere. It is the truth.

If the last few weeks have proven anything it is that people dont see those things as bad habits but things to be proud of.
After further deliberation I vote: No
To me Roms/Kernels/etc are like cars/engines/etc. if one is given either for free and it has been proven worldwide that it wont hurt one who uses it...
Wouldn't the model info be enough... I believe so.
Eugene's right, it's not like dates make it fresher.
In fact I think threads without it gives the Rom/Kernel/etc. timelessness.
I love Android/T989 forums.
Its where questions/comments are met with... passion.
Those IOS forums have no clue what they're missing out on. lol
People seem to forget that xda is a knowledge sharing site and those that share shouldn't be slapped with stupid rules and regulations on how they choose to title their work. My 2 cents.

May sound a little odd coming from a newbie like myself... but I see a lot of threads posted in the development section where the OP date for the rom update is not updated... LOL if that makes sense.
Take this for instance....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1621678
It says 6/14 in the title, but it appears that it was updated last night? How come the main thread title does not get updated? Just wondering.. I seen other threads like this too, and it makes it a little inconvenient to check each thread independantally to see which one was really updated, and which one was not.
Thanks!
That was the alpha CM9 rom created by Team Chopsticks (last updated 6/14). They are now official maintainers for the CM9 Nightlies which can be found on the CM site. The OP hasn't been updated because that was their last build and the thread is more or less just used to discuss the latest nightlies.
really this again!

Thanks!

Hes right. Can the mods delete those threads or start handing out violations or some type of demerit to the devs
People should be reading the threads anyway.

in all fairness some of those threads are pretty long to actually go and read through the whole thing
They only post their releases in the title of the thread. Nightlies aren't considered to be releases. XDA is a development forum, hence the long threads about DEVELOPMENT. :good:
Absolutely ridiculous. Read the damn thread. These guys are making you free software at the expense of countless hours of work, and you gripe about a release date in the OP when its a NIGHTLY that your whining about? Nightly- meaning every night. Figure it out

In my defense, I would like to point out the Miui thread.. That is not a nightly... its more or less a weekly, yet the date still remains as 5/27.
I understand the "development forum is for development purpose only and we should read the threads"... but really? Have you read through half of those posts? Like 5700000 pages of "Thanks" and "10Char"... not trying to be rude, just saying.. it would be helpful.

Why would you say that? Im not trolling dude, im just voicing an opinion. Furthermore, I never intended to disrespect you when I said "File a complaint form"... I dont know why you took it in a harsh way especially considering I put
a face afterwards.. I would think that you understand its a joke... again, I apologize for disrespecting you if you felt that way.

Yeah totally true.
Can someone make a call to Mark Twain in the afterlife and any writer that writes anything longer than a twit and tell him that Huckleberry Finn should be in a twitter compliant length. Can we just get a color coded system in the dev threads. where we have green for "go and flash" and red for no go.Why should we be expected to read anything at all, we need a color coded system

Because--and this is not an attack--:
Every user has different needs, and every developer has different taste. Before users go and rant about something, they should read (!) the posts in question and make their own decision based on judgment. Not on a simple color.
Reading is informative, and considering you are flashing firmware on a $200+ device I wouldn't find it wise to just blindly flash a ROM based on a color code.
Some ROMs have specific parameters and information that the developers intend users to read before using said download.
There are questions, and then there are questions that are asked a thousand times that clutter threads for no meaningful reason--especially questions that the OP already answered in the first post. We may not always have the time to update the original post for everyone. But Samsung and T-Mobile don't even have time to make a proper update for us so the trade off for whom you want support from is your choice.
Because reading is good for the mind, and it's good to know what you're doing before you do it :good:
I do agree some threads are obnoxiously long.
But if everyone closely reads a thread at its early stages, it'll stunt unnecessary growth.

I was being sarcastic but it is sad that people are so demanding of devs that it could be seen as possibly a serious comment.
Your list is a good run down of reasons to read. When did we get to the point that reading more than a single paragraph is torture?
If you are about to do something to a 300+ dollar device. read a bit.
I think there's an app that will read through the entire thread and find what your looking for.... oh wait, that's what the search button does.... my bad, nevermind.
Lazy ass go through last page of thread and you will know whats going on thread. If you can't search such small thing ; go to some crazy guy from craiglist to put ROM on ur phone paying him $$.
Nobody is here to serve you meal.

I blame twitter, and to the OP, are you referring to the bottom of the page where it says last updated?

Its really not to much of an issue here. But other devices have had it bad with thread flooding.

Does any dev plan to make a rom for our device anytime soon? It seems there are official updates only for Gnex and few other devices at present time. I am guessing maybe a week before SamMobile releases something. Thoughts? Ideas? Answers?
Yes its a question

But it is relevant to Android development that is why I posted it here not QA forum
still wrong on where to post. And a search would've gotten you your answer http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1728750

I do not see the answer there...Only how to TAG things with {MOD} or so on. And devs are reading THIS forum more! So I do not agree. And I am now an OP so leave my thread ALONE!
i agree wrong section, this is a question therefore it deserves to be in Q&A or just locked and deleted some people are still noobs
Lol, I like the idea of the thread, it's pretty neat, and friendly competition is great. The poll is a great idea but all your devs in it aren't even working on making any AOSP roms, except Jamison with AOKP but he is still dabbling with source and such. The link I gave you are the rules of what you can post in this sub-forum, none of the bunch include asking a question at all. Calm down a little and learn the rules my friend. Oh and I'm already running a 4.2.2 rom

Meh. Reported.
I reported it before I posted in it to help the guy out. Mods are busy with the announcement of 4.2.2. I'm sure there are about a 100 posts being made a minute in the wrong sections all over the world.

Yeah. I wouldn't have bothered with it if the OP hadn't decided to announce that he is free to post wherever he feels like because "I'm an OP now"
So Smart Azz...where did you get 4.2.2???

I do not see you answering this question. And if they wanna move it to QA...they will. I dont care at this point. I just want an idea of when we get in on this since it seems lately its only days after an announcement that someone has access to a build or source. So again, instead of whining at me....answer me! And if a Moderator is reading...go ahead...move this to Q/A...makes me no difference at all. I think this is relevant to development/developers. So if any Moderator disagrees...please move the thread. Again I do not care nor do I have that ability. I am just OP but do not have such functions on my interface.
From the moderator
Do not post this kind of thing here......... it belongs in Q & A not Development........ IF anything ends with or implies a "?" mark...... then it goes to Q & A
Next time posting non development related topics here will get infracted......
Thread moved to Q & A
Thanks ~~ oka1
Again...I said I dont mind

Nothing wrong with enforcement. I just thought it might get MORE views in DEV area is why I posted it. If the rule is strict (ends in ? ) then I will not post again. So apologies if they are warranted

Why are you so angry haha? I gave you some insight and if you search a little OP you will get an idea of who might be dropping a 4.2.2 rom. I will not give you any other insight or links to such threads that might be only a couple away from your thread. Because you are simply not polite but demanding, and your tone is unheard of in these threads. I say good day.
Isn't asking for etas against the rules too?

It is question as to if they have access to builds...and where those might be. I am not asking for timeline for anybody to MAKE a rom at all. I basically wish to know idea of when there will be something out there for us to use on S3 devices in USA. Pretty much an information thing not ETA thing. Understand??
Why don't your reply to me?
I gave you information and you no reply to me? Why?

this kind of attitude is why no dev wants to listen to you.
If you'd read in the dev section your answer is there
