Good roms and kernels - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I am currently a vibrant owner but I am getting sick of the GPS issues and the lack of support mainly a full source of 2.2 that runs good aside from just fast. Tmobile is sending me a G2 and I will have some time to see how I like it, I was looking for some input as far as roms and kernels go for if I decide to keep it.
I had a mytouch 3g before all this and loved the cyanogen and noticed there was a cyan rom for this and I would love to get some input on how it is, good or best or what have you. If you know of any better as far as functionality and speed go please toss me some idea so I can begin researching it.

There is a CyanogenMOD 6.1 (Android 2.2.1) ROM for the G2, They are actively working on CM7 (Android 2.3) and I would expect it to come out in the next month or so.
I'm still on the stock ROM because I'm waiting for CM7.

Expect the G2 to be similar to the G1 in terms of the amount and variety of roms. There appears to be quite a bit of support for this device.

Cyanogenmod and visionary have been the ones I've used and both are excellent. Cyanogenmod has been written about in how great it is, and visionary is a great sense rom if you care for that stuff.

Check out miui rom in android development! I'm currently using it! Its awesome. I went from stock to CM 6 then Virtious then MIUI. And I think for me Miui is the best rom, it incorporates so many things...and the new release is even more awesome.

it´s really a question that you can´t solve by yourself testing several roms?
i tested a lot of roms and the majority are stables and fast (always custom rom of course )) my current rom its wrote in my syg (it don´t means that the rest are worse....)simply ITS MY CURRENT ROM
I think that it hasn´t better answer.... the only thing that i can say is try several roms since @Seraphic pure android 2.3.3 to AOSP roms, themed roms.... and decide.
Yeah i went and used a few other rom's but to be fair i got the best out of Android Revolution, though i've also had RCMix rom's they are always good fun to use
I would recommend LeeDroid. It's stable, fast, and very well supported and updated by the developer. Highly customizable too
I'm using Revolution and love it. But it's really about testing out each ROM and seeing which one suits your needs. You'll be sure to find more and more ROMs you love. Then just pick the one you found the most usable and more to your style.
Obviously always make sure to check over new ROM updates to see if maybe another ROM offers something a bit more.

under my opinion, this is the best answer..
Try and play around flashing. Its also fun anyway. xD
Thank you guys. The only reason im reluctant on keep flashing roms is due to fear of bricking. I mean I spent £340 for the phone and I dont want it dead lol

best cyanogen alternative "no sense"

anybody have any recomendations or thoughts on any alternative gingerbread based custom roms for the g2? i love cyanogenmod not bashing it at all, theres just a few perticular reasons i dont want to use it anymore but thats another thread already. thanks for any info
MIUI 1.8.12 - Why not give that a try. There's no sense.
well there's stock G2 OTA rooted builds up. There's also a couple other AOSP based ROMs like g-lite and one stock 2.3 build by xboarder56.
I'm running a CM7 nightly right now. But sometimes I like to run a MIUI with launcher Pro. Smooth neat Improvements.
thanks for the feedback everyone. im just actually looking at replies as i was sick for a few days. im very much considering the miui but the one time i did flash it i was almost confused by the completly redesigned settings menu almost overwhelming, very cool rom though. what i really want it basically a tuned down cyanmod, i do love his roms its just that 65-70% of the options in it i dont and will never use. i understand why all the tweaks its so it includes something for everyone. actually is there a cyanogenmod online kitchen? that could be my cup of tea perhaps.

actually does anybody know what happened to enomther or his custom roms? i mean did he ever update? that was always my fav rom, just seems a little outdated at the moment atleast to me.

[Q] What is your favorite Rom?

After seeing so many posts about what rom is the best, I decided that making a poll will hopefully stop threads about what rom I should try, etc etc
Hopefully this stops the virus spreading around here.

CyanogenMod 7
Nothing lets you control your phone like it.
PyroMod. It gets faster and faster with every update (even though it hasn't been updated in nearly two months), A2EXT is automatic and runs smoothly, getting close to 3000 on Quadrant, and no force closes. I'd like to see that ROM ported to future Android devices.
My fav is listed in my sig.
CM7. Fastest ROM I've used.
I use cyanogen mod 7. It is extremely fast and looks really nice. I just recently rooted, so I don't know any other good roms.
MIUI is the one of the roms that is constantly updated and gives you that iPhone UI. Give it a try and you will wanna give up that Rom.

I agree with this, but I have to use MIUI since Virtuous doesn't boot on my phone (no reason, it just doesn't...ever...boot, always goes back to recovery.) CM7 is too full of crap.
I rebuilt my MIUI to be more like Android, aside from the menus, which I like a lot.
Pyromod is really nice, I may end up just going back to that once I've had my fun with MIUI and get sick of the iPhone-ness of it.
CM7, never had an issue with it

[Q] Help: Suggest best sense-less One X ROM?

Most of the roms seem to have retained Sense 4. And the Sense roms seem to be updated more frequently.
I like the new Sense but want to try something different. I'm coming from Android Revolution which I like very much.
Want a ROM with lots of improvements to optimize performance, smoothness and speed, based on the latest ICS version, with bone-stock APKs and no bloatware.
Suggestions? What are my best couple options even....?
I'd recommend LeDrOiD and Android Revolution HD, both are updated frequently. But since HTC have not released any new software lately, there isn't much for the developers to do.
Both ROM can have Sense removed, LeDrOiD is easier in this regard.
It seems kernel is currently the hot development area.
Edit, posted irreverent info.
Thanks! I was asking about ROMS not Launchers though.
Ideally I would like a sense-less ROM that came with the stock ICS launcher (even over Apex or Nova).

try JDROID rom then or check the rom thread and see if they give the sense-less option in aroma installer..most roms now do that anyway. or just use rom-cleaner no-sense version and it does the business for you anyway
Or you could try cyanogen mod 9?

I can't claim to have given it a thorough testing, but the CM9 build available on the MoDaCo forums seemed pretty stable to me.

just by reading the changelog for me there was a few options there missing..plus the closed source attitude kinda put me off that rom anyway of Trips..the guys in the development section here are doing a far great work and are alot more helpful...so i would wait on those guys to get it up and running
I thought camera and wifi hotspot weren't working on CM9 - I use both every day.
Camera worked for me. Hotspot I didn't try, but it's the only thing listed as not working on Trip's build of CM9

Fair enough, and I don't disagree much. In Trips defense, he seems to have a rather large following singing his praises.
I only installed it for testing out GPS. I've gone back to ARHD with my own tweaks to trimming Sense.

No one is saying anything bad about him, just the guys here are open with the code that makes anyone able to help, stuff gets done faster.
Back on topic, with leedroid, pkmn and arhd(I think) you can remove sense and all its widgets and run any launcher you like.

Still running CM7.2

Hey folks
Quick question for you all. I'm still running CM7.2 and have seen loads of other alternatives since browsing these forums. My question is what would be the next best rom for me to try?
I'm not too hung up on the whole sense thing and prefer my phone to be fast and functional with some eye candy. I like the whole ICS look and can't wait for CM9 but just fancy a change so what can you recommend for me?
Cheers!
Best rom for you to try is the best that you like. There is no real answer.

Ok what I meant was... Point me in the right direction!!
There might not be a real answer but I was only looking for an opinion
IceColdSandwich by Lord Clockan is my recommendation. It's a fully working, super smooth ICS ROM. It's just as fast as CM 7.2, which I used for a long time.
There's also aospX by existz from the Inspire 4G forum (as you might know, ROMs for both devices are fully inter-compatible). It's based off AOSP source with as little modifications as possible, while IceColdSandwich is based off AOKP source with parts of CM too. There's no better one between these two, they're made differently according to the preferences of the individual devs. existz wanted a pure AOSP experience so he made aospX, and Lord Clockan wanted AOKP + CM customizations. Both are fully working ROMs including video camera (480p) and are the only such ones for DHD.

Redemption is quite good as well.
You will need gapps for all of them, I don't know which is the lattest number.
In gb blackice and absolution are good. There is also one made by: and please pardon the bad spelling hrkdn, which seems to be a briallant barebone rom.

GAPPS comes with the LC ICS so no need to install it separately.
