Unrevoked ROOT with latest update - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, today I wanted to root my Desire using Unrevoked method, before that I installed latest Desire updates (because of new radio) then I tried unrevoked and it says "Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?".
Is it because of updates?

going by what youve quoted i think youve answered your own question

I just want confirmation that it's happening to everyone , not just me

I'll guess he's on the same version as me, with kernel 2.6.31.15 and build 2.29.405.5.
I used unrEVOked 3.32 and it successfully rooted it -- apparently. However, it wouldn't manage to get root the second time when I tried to reflash it, nor actually push the custom recovery.
su _seems_ to work, but I am unable to do any backup (with the "Error while dumping boot image" being the error message) of the stock ROM.

unrEVOked worked fine for me on that version, use 3.31 and flashed AmonRA as opposed to CWM

Well, tra la la. It seems odd that it being 3.31 should have anything to do with it, but I tried it again now (4th attempt) and it managed to both root (more successfully this time?) and flash it with CWM 3.0.0.5 - which has worked splendidly, now I can actually do nandroid backups.

[Q] How to root the htc evo updated with ota 3.70

Hello All, I had my htc ovo rooted with unrevoked 3.22. After flashed it with the 3.70.651.1 rom, I lost root and clockwork recovery; S-OFF still shows though. Now I could not reroot it with unrevoked since it was stuck at "Waiting for root". I also tried to flash it with a rooted 3.70.651.1 rom (renamed to update.zip and booted from stock recovery mode (red triangle and !) without any success. After I pick install from sdcard/update.zip, it said something like "Signature is not verified. Aborted". Should I wait for an updated unrevoked 3.2# or there are some manual rooting using adb shell. Any advices will be much appreciated by me. Thank in advance.

That way doesn't work, at least from what I've seen. All over that thread are folks that can't get it working on their 3.70 EVOs
Not sure if this will work with your 3.70 builds....but since you say you still have S-OFF, you have to reload the custom recovery back onto your phone and the superuser app. There are instructions over at the unrevoked forever wiki page here. Under Reinstalling an official recovery page, you can find both Amon_RA and CWM PC36IMG files for download and link for superuser.

root for the newest ota?

Does unrevoked work with the newest ota that was just pushed?
it's been answered several times but the answer is no.

Ok, new to the forum, new(er) to rooting....
I understand the ota GB cant be rooted.... but... and Ive searched everywhere on numerous forums for about the entire day w/o finding an answer..... is there anyway to roll back the update to 2.2?
shipped-roms and the ruu seem to be out of biz, rsdlite was suggested by a friend... seems to only work with moto...
if it helps at all, I do have a dinc 2.2 rooted... problem is my fiance's phone, she accepted the ota before finding out it couldnt be rooted. Is there anyway to utilize anything from my phone to reflash hers?
Any help would be much appreciated... GB update is killing her phone
Thanks

You should be able to use Unrevoked:
http://unrevoked.com/recovery/
make sure you have the droid incredible driver installed on your PC as well.
--
This process should root your phone, you'll then be able to flash other ROM's that may prove to be quicker, drain less battery, more stylish.

Not sure if unrevoked would work or not. But if your s-off you can just flash cwm or amon ra recovery thru hboot, and then flash the super user binary thru recovery. Bam your rooted.

See my post a couple up.
And for your info unrevoked gave the to new firmware error because you must be on the stock froyo radio for it to work, you are on the latest gingerbread radio. And there is also a newer version of gingerbread out, the official one 4.06.605.3 ruu you can get it in the dev section but if you do go from .2 to .3, do it before rooting as it will also un-root you.

I read your previous post and follow your instruction but with no luck. I tried several custom recovery and renamed it to PB31IMG.zip but always fail. Is there any other way to flash the custom recovery, perhabs with fastboot, adb, etc and how? Can I flash back to RUU Froyo OTA then use unrevoked to get root since I already S-OFF?
Edit: Done! I get root again, thanks cmlusco. The problem is my SDCard which I used in Desire before. After reformatting the SDCard, everythings went well.

You take the PB31IMG.zip and the su.zip and place them on your sd card in no folders. Boot into hboot and wait a couple secs. It will find the PB31IMG.zip and prompt you to hit volume up to flash it. Once thats done then select recovery from hboot and select install zip from sd and select the su.zip. Answer yes when prompted to install. After it has finished reboot your phone and install thr superuser app from the market. Thats it then your fully rooted.
Thanks for your help again.
I hit volume up to flash and within about a second it shows update complete and asks to reboot device. I've tried both ways Yes and No, with No continuing on and doing the su.zip as instructed. It doesn't seem to do anything either way. How long should the PB31IMG take to flash?

S-off dissables hboot security allowing you to flash custom recoveries, raidios, and splash screens thru hboot. It also makes it easier to re root your phone should you some how loose root or need to remove it.
Root is a way to provide you superuser permissions, so you can access all system files and functions from within the android os.
What software version are you on now?
okay thanks for clearing that up for me.
i am currently using, hboot-0.92.0000
and clockworkMod Recovery v.2.5.1.2
cm7.1 nightly i think its like android 2.3.7
and i rooted with unrevoked mac osx.

Hi
I had the same problem on a Desire. Have tried aloth of things, but was stuck on 2.5.0.7 of ClockWorksMod Recovery....
I have now switched to S-OFF - using the Revolutionary tool.
And have now been able to update teh ClockWorksMod Recovery to 5.0.2.0....
I had to change rom to cm7 - but you are on that.
I was on ISC 4.0.3, but the Revolutionary tool didn't work with that rom (or the version I was using)....
Hope this will help you in the right direction...

[Q] no root anymore after re-run unrevoked

Hi all I've rooted my wildfire last year using unrevoked and all went ok... now I've used unrevoked another time to flash an updated clockworkmod 2.5.0.7 instead of my actual 2.5.0.1 almost because I can't charge my phone when it's off because of an old bug in cwm.
After running unrevoked the phone boots but I've lost superuser app and unrevoked itself fails with something like "cannot get root, firmware too new?" and if I run "su" from terminal emulator I got a "permission denied". The cwm is still version 2.5.0.1
Any idea?
I've just installed superuser app from the market and now I've restore the su command functionality...
What happened? and why unrevoked doesn't upgrade recovery image with the one I've specified?

I never would have the idea to re-run unrevoked for flashing a different recovery. Although it's also suggested in The Complete Wildfire Index thread I always would choose one of the three other methods (always done it by the PC49IMG.zip method).
Flashing a recovery isn't just a minor tweak if I'm correct. So I'm not surprised that you lost superuser temporarily. I personally would get a bit nervous to do this by revolutionary - but that's perhaps I'm already an old wise guy
Because I've used unrevoked (when I've rooted my wildfire it was the only way) I'm actually S-ON so the other 3 methods shouldn't work in my case.

Help! Droid Incredible "Half-Way" Rooted

Hey all,
So I upgraded to a Droid DNA a couple of months ago, so I decided to root my OG Droid Incredible (SLCD).
I followed the guide here: (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1488351) to the letter. When I got to the step where I ran unrevoked, it flashed ClockWorkMod recovery, but didn't finish the process. So what happened is now I have ClockWorkMod recovery, and a Stock ROM that doesn't have Root access. (I downloaded a couple of different root checkers from the market and I got "no root access" results".
I tried flashing the stock recovery using the PB31IMG.zip method, but in HBOOT my phone won't recognize the file on my Micro SDcard, even though it's on the root, and properly named.
Can anyone help me get my phone completely rooted, or at least back to stock-stock so I can use a different method?
P.S I did check all MD5 sums, and the phone still works perfectly....it's just in a weird "limbo" state of rooted or not.
Thanks!

If you have cwm flashed then just flash superuser http://dinc.does-it.net/Superuser/SuperUser_3.1.1.zip, thru cwm. Then you will be rooted. Also remember to install busybox from the market.
Alternativley you could just flash a rom of your choosing, as roms come pre rooted and with busybox.

Boot to hboot (vol down + power), it should say at the top. Give me all the info there. You may need to reformat your sdcard fat32 to get the ruu to work. Try going to menu settings applications manage applications all tab find superuser and clear its data. Then open superuser go to preferences and select binary update.

I've did reformat my sdcard when I was going to do the RUU but it still didn't work , but I will try that again anyway.

Alright,
So I unlocked successfully, flashed su.zip, reflashed CWM recovery, and got to the busy box step.
I'm using jrummy's installer from the market, and it's telling me I have root access. But when I try to install it, it doesn't work. It just sits there "installing busybox". I also used a rootchecker app and that one says I still don't have root access, even though the busybox installer says I do. Superuser also tells me I don't have root access when I go to update the binaries.
