OK, my wife just got her EVO and she NEVER uses her 4G. She doesn't understand too much on the phone, and really doesn't care to. And she NEVER remembers to plug it in and charge it, so the 4G is always turned off.
I, on the other hand, use the hell out of 4G, or at least I did before I lost my RSA keys.
So, can I use her RSA keys, since she'll never use them anyhow? Everyone has now learned how to back up the WiMax, or the RSA keys, but how do you reinstall them, and if I reinstall her keys, will they work on my phone? The other option is to have Sprint change the numbers on the two phones, swapping hers for mine and vice versa. Probably the easiest way to go really, but if the RSA keys from her phone will work, we would be able to do this with a minimum of fuss, and we could avoid her asking me why the hell we have to switch phones.
why not just switch phones via sprint?

It is the only option. You lost your keys they are gone for good and the keys are phone specific.
Edit: If you have an old nandroid from AmonRa backup then you may be able to get your RSA's back in line. Don't know for sure because I am not willing to break it to find out. But AmonRA made that for the backup just for that reason. Everytime you nandroid it is the exact same info in the wimax.img file.
I believe it possible. I remember reading a post where somebody restored somebody else's rsa keys but could only use 4g one at a time cause it logs into Sprint It was a while back when ppl first started losing there keys.

Swyped From Eva Running Myn's RLS4.95 or My Rom!
Okay guys, thanks for the input. Looks like I'll just switch phones with my wife. She should be pleased...I have mine set up pretty nicely. First thing I'm going to do to hers is BACK UP EVERYTHING, AND NOT WITH CLOCKWORK!
Thanks for the input everyone. Though, it almost seems pointless to back up the RSA keys since nobody seems to know how to reinstate them once lost! I guess it is still better to have them than not to have them. Thanks again everyone.
yeah do the RSA backup prior to rooting and do the certificate backup too.
Clockwork now backs up the wimax and rsa keys, but stay with aman ra if it works for you.

Hello XDA Community
This all happened when I wanted to update on myn rls5 New Rom and I flashed the radios, I had performed a nand backup on the phone it self prior to installing rom and flashing radios. In the middle of the processes my phone just froze and showed a small android out of a box icon, I tried removing the battery after 20 mins still no boot. Then I tried installing again, but my sd card was not visable, loaded up my card with adapter not visible on 5 pc's a nook and cam. It seemed it was curroppted, tried formatting with 5 diffrent programs no luck even in recovery menu. Now my phone would enter into recovery either. I then just flashed recovery from unrevoked website and i was able to install caulkins rom. It worked but no 4g. In the meanwhile i was able to send in my 16 micro sd card back to sandisk for a replacement. I had purchased it when it came out had 1 year left of warranty got it back yesterday it took a week. Now I was trying to install myn again and tried but the radio flashed again and booted still no 4g. I checked my rsa keys using joeyks?? app from market and it shows as rsa keys missing. I had backed up my nands on pc but my HP hard rive became corrupted and lost it. Just got replacement 2 days ago. Now I tried changing my mac address because it is different from back of phone and when turned on in system menu. It just says scanning, connecting and restarts scanning. I cannot get adb to install correctly again, i type adb devices and just shows list of devices, and nothing. I have a windows 7 64bit. Tried with htc sync drivers no luck now, others from xda forum no luck either. I have downloaded the sdk, java and open cmd promt correctly still no dice. Is there a fix if my rsa keys are gone and no image. Will changing my mac address as found here will help? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715525&highlight=rsa
Please help and thanks you in advance.
So, to summarize:
You had a bad radio flash, your RSA keys are gone, and all your backups are gone.
You are what we in the tech community like to call, boned. Really. Once your RSA keys are gone, your only hope is backups. If those backups are gone, you're screwed. Your only choices are as follows:
1) Live with no WiMax.
2) RUU your phone, take it into a Sprint store/repair center, and try to get them to replace your phone. It helps to actually know what RSA keys are, and if there was a recent OTA, as you can usually blame the OTA for your key loss.
If/when you get a new EVO, backup your WiMax RSA keys online. Dropbox is a great, free way to do this. Click here to sign up for Dropbox and get an exta 250MB for free.
I lost my keys and I loaded up a bad kernel lol so my cam wouldn't work and flashed back to stock rom. I had all this planned out and I said and ota messed up my cam. It was brilliant. I got a new phone in 2 days.

I need to do the same thing. Bad backups didnt save my keys. =(
*...backing up my keys now...*
EDIT: Also emailed them to myself..
Thanks, the problem is that I sanded the edges off my phone so it looks red, now I don't think they will take it like that. Im ganna have to claim a lost phone and get a refurbished one. Is there any hope of a fix soon maybe with the new cynagen? im currently using miui now because I couldn't find a fix. Its pretty darn good. But i miss my 4g. It sucks cause the myn room isnt that great anyway, i prefer caulkin. Oh well. Thanks

There's nothing to "fix". The data is unique to every phone, and can only be generated by Sprint (since a corresponding RSA public key has to be loaded into their system).
Like I said, your only choices are a new EVO, or to live without WiMax. Believe me, I know, it sucks. I lost my keys because of a bad WiMax radio update a few months ago. Fortunately, WiMax just came to my area a few weeks ago, and so when it did, I brought my phone in and got it replaced.
thanks, I guess ill give asurion a call.

...Can I enable tethering and/or Hotspot capability without having to pay Sprint for the pleasure? I'm not about to fork over any more $$$ for capability that my phone already has baked-in. And the incremental use of Sprint's network sure isn't worth what, the extra $30? No sir.
I've done a search and I've seen -- literally -- 20 ways to root an Evo. I simply want the best (and safest) option available for us Mac users.
Any assistance from the members of this august body would be greatly appreciated...

OK, seems like you two have had success with unrEVOked... I'm going to download it now...
Do I need to do anything special to prep my Evo for the job?
And as a sidebar, what's this I hear about backing up RSA keys for 4G service?? I enjoy great 4G speeds where I commonly use my phone, so I want to protect that. Can either of you enlighten me on that?
Thank you both (and anyone else with follow-on answers...)!!!
Unrevoked worked great.
To wireless tether download app from the market called wireless tether for root users. Works with WiMax and 3g.
For preventing WiMax keys I use Amon Ra Recovery. You can backup WiMax settings with that (backing up RSA keys is not always enough from what I heard)
Link for Amon RA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
Thanks to you all, I'm not rooted!!
And I've since removed some of the Sprint bloatware on my phone (including Blockbuster among other things...)
For the time-being, I'm gonna run the stock ROM, until I feel more comfy with adding a custom ROM.
Thank you again, everyone for your assistance!!

I've been trying to figure out how to root my Evo on a Mac for eons, but the current version of unrEVOked only supports Snow Leopard (10.6) and unfortunately, I'm running Leopard on a non-Intel machine (so SL is not an option)...
Any good advice for my archaic setup and I???
THANKS!
I have been trying to resolve this, but could not find an answer yet.
I was very happy and satisfied until a week ago... every time I turn on the 4G, it will show the 4G icon with an ! next to it and when I drop down the taskbar I have to tap to find an antenna... it takes much longer to do it... and many times after a while, the icon shows up again and I have to click again to find an antenna. ANyone having this issue or know what to do?
I tried changing roms, reflashing the radios, but no luck...
thank you
edit: OOPSSS... sorry, posted in the development thread. I am so sorry... the problem still remains though...
First things first... this thread really belongs in Q&A. It has nothing to do with development. Mod please move.
What is your current setup? ROM, Kernel, etc? Have you checked your RSA keys?
Have you called Sprint to make sure there isn't an outage in your area? I'm assuming you are getting the "4G Antenna On" icon in the top left corner and when you pull down it says "Tap to Scan".
Use the RSA key checker method, its posted here in the forum. Also try some of the 4G connection fixes, you can find them a few pages back as well. However, I think the prudent thing to do would be to check with Sprint first.
I noticed the thread just after I posted. I really don't know how to move but will try.
I have tried the stock rom and many others, wiping everything, and still got the problem. I have another Evo and it works just fine, so its not an outage...
I will try the RSA that you mentioned. I have no idea what that is, but will look for it. Thanks.

I'm assuming you made backups before you went flash crazy lol. Have you tried restoring one of your backups?
Sorry I forgot we have an app to check RSA keys now. Last time I did it, I just went thru Terminal Emulator.
RSA Keys Cheker says it's all fine... don't know what to do now...
Shotty service in your area? Using a wimax enable kernel?
Again, some more information about your current setup would be very helpful.
No go yet. Tried all the suggestions and still get the icon with an !.
Ive tried different rooms too, but right now, i am on sprint stock deodexed, latest radios and pri, and yes, dalvik and all else were wiped...
You're using a wimax enable kernel?
All this icon is telling you is that 4G is on but you're not connected. It lets you "kickstart" the scan process, and it serves as a reminder that if you can't connect to 4G, you'd save battery by turning 4G off. It's not all that useful. But it's a feature of the last update (or maybe the previous one...I can't remember). There's no issue here.
Hey guys I just installed MikG after a full wipe. Ran Kings Wipe all .zip 1st to delete everything as I do between all flashes but I can't connect to 4G. When I turn on 4g it says connecting and then authenticating with sprint and then it disconnects and tries all over again and it will just stay in the loop till i turn the 4g off. Any ideas to make it work?
Thanks in advance
you probably lost your wimax keys. if you have a backup make sure you don't delete it.
I doubt I have a back up. Any ways to get them back w/o that. I've flashed many roms before and never had any problems. Maybe I was just lucky. Usually just back up my apps with Titanium.
Okay update. It says Scanning, then Connecting to Sprint, then Disconnected and then it starts that all over again. So yeah I probably lost my keys. Anyway to get them back w/o a back up.

I tried it and still I'm getting the same thing. It did say it was authenticating with Sprint 1 time but not again after that. I updated my PRL and Profile as well as it mentioned in one of the other posts in that thread.
Don't assume it's the keys -- post 5 in that thread linked above tells you how to check.
Unfortunately though, if it is the keys, you're basically screwed. If you care, take advantage of the open enrollment in TEP next month (if you don't already have it), and pay the $100 for a replacement. Generally if the keys are gone, they're gone for good. So I hope it turns out to be something else!

I actually had this problem before and it lasted about 3days to a week, and then it magically worked again. I'd assume your keys are fine. Give it a few days
Well (insert curss word here). Just ran the terminal command through the terminal emulator on my phone that was listed in post 5 of the linked thread and I'm missing the hidden keys line. Looks like it is the keys. Anyway if I unrooted my phone I could bring it back to Sprint and be like wtf or would they have a way to check? Also I have been paying for the stupid TEP program since the day I got my phone. I mean worst case i'll just go back to an AOSP rom and it won't matter but i would like the 4G option. So yeah, any ideas on unrooting and bringing it back to sprint and playing dumb? Or some magic way to bring my keys back.
Also do you think running the KingsMOD-FORMAT_ALL.ZIP could have deleted my keys. I remember it saying something about formatting the system.

idk,
but for your keys i've seen it said that there is a method to restore keys.
if i can find the thread here i'll post link
Unless someone's found a way recently, you can only restore your keys if you had a backup from beforehand. Without one, they're gone.
As for unrooting and trying to return it, you can always try playing dumb, but my understanding is that people don't just lose the keys if they aren't rooted. So the missing keys in and of themselves are going to tell them you were rooted.
BTW, AOSP roms like CM7 have 4G now too. Basically you just need to decide if it's worth $100 to you to have 4G working. Also consider resale value, if you care. Assuming you're honest and disclose it, your phone might not be worth as much without working 4G.
If you do replace it, be sure to back up the keys in the new one once it's rooted. Both Amon and clockwork have that option.

I thought I had lost my 4G when I first rooted my phone, but i recently unrooted and put it back on stock, 4g worked fine. rerooted and 4g works now, not sure how that fixed 4g but it did.
Thanks for all the info guys. I would unroot just to try it but im reading now that all these phones can't be rooted now because of some update. Is there a way to unroot and then gain root again with out any of the problems these new phones are giving? But also since my keys clearly are gone is that even worth trying?
I' some what confused with why my phone is doing this.
I've flashed many roms and i always wipe everything down and never had an issue.
but for some reason, after flashing deck 1.3 stable and tiamat 3.3.7, it stopped connecting to 4g.
i flashed the latest radio and nothing.
just reflashed sense and updated prl and profile and still not connecting to 4g
it shows scanning for 4 seconds, then shows connecting to sprint for 1 second, then disconnecting, then back to scanning. I just don't get it.
any ideas? suggestions?
thanks fellas.
sounds like your rsa keys maybe missing. try restoring a nandroid backup of when your 4g was still working that may do the trick if not check out this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887900&highlight=rsa+keys. i forgot theres a app in the market you can use its called wimax rsa key checker or something like that. if it says your keys are gone just return your phone back to stock and bring it in just remember to play dumb when you do. just tell them all of a sudden your 4g stopped working.

damn that sucks. like i said earlier just unroot and put back a stock rom, then bring it in to sprint and play dumb. if they cant solve the problem then most likely they'll order you a replacement phone. once you get your phone back try to use 4g again some how after they flashed new software for me my 4g was working again and i just canceled my replacement phone.
Unroot and put the newest stock OTA on it. Take it to Sprint tell them it updated while you were away from your phone or sleeping and the battery was low when you realized your phone was dead you charged it up and powered it on only to discover your 4g no longer works.
to take a stab at your second question, were you drinking Red Poopers? Red wine, tequila and tabasco...
that's why I'm generally hung over
