Hey guys. I just used my early upgrade today to get myself a brand new HTC Incredible.
The main reason I decided on it is 1) I can root it, 2) If I didn't choose soon, I'd be stuck with my Droid 1 until November 2011 at the earliest and 3) Sense
That being said, I'm really excited to get this phone Friday.
I have a few questions though.
I want to root, but only to get Wireless Tether, as I use that all the time on my D1.
What's the best way to achieve root, with Clockwork Recovery? I would assume using unrEVOked is the best way for gaining root access, but which one do I use? unrEVOked 3, or unrEVOked Forever?
Also, how do I put the custom recovery on it?
And lastly, do I need a different kernel to get Wireless Tether working? If so, how do I do that?
I'm pretty unfamiliar with how this forum is set up, so forgive me if these questions have been asked before.
Thanks
Unrevoked does it all for you
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
you do not need a different kernal
probably need to follow the slcd root process...
The only extra step is choosing a different recovery during the unrevoked process.
Really easy.
Edit: never mind... Looks like the new unrevoked should do everything for you! Sweet. Released just now.
Sent from my ADR6300
Ok, so it should be as simple as running unrEVOked3 and installing the Wireless Tether app from the market?
Will unrEVOked also get me running a custom recovery?

Yep should be Clockworkmod
You need to return your phone and wait to see what new phones are going to be released tomorrow at the Verizon press conference at CES.

Umm, no. Lol.
If I wait, I wouldn't be able to upgrade until Nov at the earliest. Since I upgraded now, I can upgrade again in Dec/Jan and get the iPhone.
But until then, I'm gonna enjoy me some 1ghz Snapdragon action

Any consequences other than losing root? I'm not too concerned about getting it right this second since I know these devs at xda will cook somethin nice up in a few days. Just want to know my options. THanks
EDIT: im running dc 3.2.3 (2.1)
It should just flash the new ROM. Yes, you'll lose root and it probably replaces the bootloader so you can't boot into recovery either, but it should be just another stock phone after that.
So I am rooted and go to load up the update and it puts me in the spot with the android guy and the /!\ what gives...

Well we all know by now once your phone is rooted you cannot do any ota, you are much better of waiting a day or two to get the rooted version from one of the dev.

some of us dont care about loosing root, and as far as i knew i could at anytime upgrade to something sprint put out and all that would happen is i would loose root.
I'm pretty pissed...I thought that an OTA would override the unrEVOked 3 since it's not even full root. Now I gotta figure out what to do next. There is another thread here that describes a method to UNROOT. But I'm not sure if it works with UNREVOKED 3

This is my position aswell. Im sure i read pleanty of people saying unrevoked would have no effect on future updates, and the worst that would happen was loosing root.
eventually all the developers will migrate to froyo as a base so you can wait or you can unroot like me and install the OTA with no prob. When I installed the OTA it kinda installed like a regular app...did not go to bootloader or nothing like that. Then it just rebooted into froyo...did not lose anything such as installed apps or user data etc. It's all good eitherway you choose in my opinion. Keep root and wait...Unroot/OTA and wait...it will only be a short time like almost already and full froyo with root is a done deal...

I had the june update so i was 1.47 but either way this is the program to use...
http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-evo-4g-roms-hacks/19278-how-unroot-return-stock.html
This in my opinion is the way to go...make sure you use the 1.47 one and you are good to go...then get the OTA FROYO...I did it this way.
I had Unrevoked3 on mine for wifi tethering..and did the manual leaked update (update.zip on sd card etc) and it worked just peachy, if you wanted to go that route. I did lost my root but none of my data (even superusers is still installed lol)
From what I read there isnt much of a difference between the .3 and .6 versions anyway
Maybe if you did that, then waited to see what HTC comes up with for us "early adopters" to get us up to speed lol
Hey guys,
I just got my replacement phone yesterday and wanted to root, my old launch phone was rooted using toast method. I want to be fully rooted with nand unlock. Is the "how to root Android 2.2" on the development forum the best way to do this? If not what it? Thanks in advance guys.

I rooted my evo today using unrevoked. It was very simple and quick. Perfect for someone new to Android and rooting such as myself.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I rooted my EVO today using the unrEVOked3 one click method....and I'm guessing it's rooted. I tried on "several" occasions to use the shootme app when not rooted and it did not work, however it does now.
On the flip side....I can not tether, as it says I do not have root accsess. Also holding down the volume button and power button, it goes into the white screen and when I hit fastboot it "I'm guessing" scans and comes back saying 'no image found' a bunch of times and returns to the main menu.
When I tried to hit the "recovery" button it went to a blackscreen and showed a picture of my phone with an exclamation point over it. No buttons did anything....pulled the battery and all was well again.
So I went back to the unrEVOked (as I am assuming I have no recovery image on my phone - and I tried to put on on the root of my card and see if fastboot would find it....it did the same scan "no image found" and I wasn't going to try to go into recovery again, lol)...so I went back to UnrEVOked and tried that all over again with the phone pluged it, it found my phone and said pushing recovery 'clockworkmod' and then all of a sudden - failed....terminating push.
I did that twice and I now have no idea how to get a recovery onto my phone.
Could it possibly be that I am rooted and not NAND? How can one tell if they are not NAND (I have no superuser icon)
If anyone has had this issue or is way more experience in this unrevoked one click root thing.....I would much appreciate the help
I recommend against unrevoked because it seems like more problems or steps are needed to get it running smoothly.
Use this guide paired with simple root.
http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc...34-how-rooting-htc-evo-froyo-2-2-windows.html
Worked like a charm on my replacement evo.
Thanks man....you have answered a question that has been going around in my head for a little while now. There is no way to root 2.2 yet....one has to root from 2.1 and use rooted 2.2 ROMS.
Well it's good to know that there "IS" a way to revert to 2.1 should I want to root that badly....now that I know I have to go back to eclair, I'm not so sure I want to root.....I love 2.2 Froyo!!!
Thanks, I'll keep doing more research as to if it's worth it....and or if someone has found a way to root 2.2 altogether

Once you downgrade to 2.1 you can root with the 2.1 simpleroot. Then you can flash any rooted Froyo ROM you want. You do not stay at 2.1, unless you flash a 2.1 ROM.
i cannot speak for the unrevoked forever as i have not implemented it and do not plan to.
the unrevoked team has been known to put out a couple products that perhaps were not as fully tested as they should have been. but then again, this is a dev site...it's all use at ur own risk. that being said, unrevoked3 has been out for a while and seems to be ok. i have used it to root phones for friends.

There is a way to root 2.2, it's called Unrevoked. The latest version 3.21 works great. I used it to root 3 EVOs and had no problems at all. It takes 5 minutes.
So i rooted with Unrevoked3 the other day.. Note that im a noob with android. Ive only had my Evo for 2weeks. It was easier than i thought. Im running Myns warm two point two rom and ive customized launcher pro plus, its awesome. So my question is... am i fully rooted now? Cause i was told to download and install Unrevoked Forever after i used Unrevoked3???

yes. you have full root + NAND is unlocked. as per unrevoked3
you do not need to run the UnrevokedForever. i have not and do not see myself running it. if more of the devs whom i have technical respect for start recommending it, then perhaps.
you only really need if 1) you a dev and are playing around with some new update for some reason or 2) ur impatient
for example...there is a new update hitting shelves. folks that are impatient will want to load up the latest and greatest...and will often loose root. rather than wait for Myn to release their updated ROM. personally, i would suggest just waiting for Myn to update.
until you have a better feel for how things work. stick with the 'name brand' Rooted ROMs. they will be updated pretty quick. you can see how many posts some of them have...might be a good indicator of activity.
enjoy you new device.
don't forget
- ALWAYS read the first post all the way thru
- to copy a nandroid over to your computer once in a while. (sux if you have a nandroid from yesterday..but your phone is lost or card melted)
- backup your launcherpro settings
- something like smsbackup+ may be helpful
- titantium backup. the paid version is very much worth it if you plan to play with your build a lot. faster and easier by and far. (look into making the update.zip from within titanium as a backup option)
They have not updated there root tool to crack the new HBOOT 2.02. Are they done with the EVO and moving on to other newer devices? I have a few friends that just got EVO's and they cant root them now because of the HBOOT version they have. Any help would be great.
Thanks,

Why dont you like the GUI Method? It seems to be the safest hands down. Less steps = less problems. Unless unrevoked does something i dont know about, but its worked flawless for me the last 10 times i used it. Did it the old toast way 3 or 4 times, i prefer the ease of unrevoked... not that it was hard the other way. Definitely doesn't require being kicked though lol
when i was trying to root under 2.1 version, the GUI methods didn't work, and i jacked some **** up too. i had to go all the way back with a RUU. Plus using manual method gets you used to ADB/Fastboot commands etc. If a lot more people started out that way, lot less simple questions probably wouldn't get asked. Nothing against that team, just my personal preference, when you do GUI, you don't get all the principles behind what your doing, so you just expect everything to work.

What HBOOT version do you have? Is it below 2.02? That would be the reason unrevoked worked for you.
I loaded the recovery screen and it said HBOOT was 0.94.0000 Does that sound right? I just did everything I saw in a How To video. Downloaded necessary drivers etc and then did everything in order. Worked just fine. Mine didn't exactly look like the walkthrough though. It didn't say Android 1 on my Device Manager it said Android phone and to update the drivers I had to expand the Android Phone selection. Just a few minor things, otherwise it all went smooth.
anyone got an up date on the unrevoked update?

I returned my Incredible after the first week due to this stupid OTA update, and got a new incredible. Rooted it soon as I got home. Screw that update and waiting for a fix!
what did u tell them to get a new one?
First I called tech support and said it rebooted and was force closing. They had me do a factory reset.
Next day I went to store and told them about previous tech support, but told them it hadn't force closed anymore, but it continued to randomly reboot.
The tech guy asked if I had accepted the update, and I stated I had. He immediately said that was the cause of my problems, and swapped out the phone.
He said his girlfriend had an Incredible from day one, and when she accepted the update the other day, it would reboot at least once a day!

The NOV OTA can't be rooted yet. The Unrevoked3 tool doesn't work on it yet, they are working on an update for their tool, but no eta yet.
There are instructions to downgrade, use Unrevoked3 to root and install ClockworkMod, then use UnrevokedForever to get S-OFF, update to the OTA, and re-install CWM Recovery and SU to gain root.

i just got a brand new inc thru insurance (cracked my old one) and i activated it, booted up, and it i know it said 2.2 was installed. i said what the hell, tried to root it, and it worked. it must be an SLCD, becuase i got white bars, so im installing the modded recovery for SLCD now.
Exactly what I did when I got my new one. You just have to do it before you, or a vzw rep, accepts the update right after activating.
that must be why, the update did keep popping up lol. i guess it works on 2.2, but not if you go the Nov OTA. there is a guide to downgrade though so all phones can be rooted currently (not sure about SLCD that got the Nov. OTA though)

Yes all phones can be downgraded even if they are completely stock..you can re-flash signed RUUs no problem from within HBOOT.
This really isn't that big of a deal that everyone is making it out to be, but it would be a "nice" feature once you are able to root the latest OTA directly especially for the very few who just leave their phones completely stock and do nothing but root it.
If you use custom ROMs none of this matters.
Just thought I'd mention that the 3.22 update was just posted on their site.

^Seriously...I've been trying to find a quick root guide, but the quick root guides are not so quick lol. In order to know what you are doing, you have to do so much research to know what the heck they are talking about. I used to do customer ROMs and crap all the time with my Touch Pro 2 Windows mobile phone, it was SOOO much easier. And this is coming from a Sprint Service Tech, I've been messing with phones for quite awhile...
Personally, i just started all this root & mod stuff recently. Its interesting but very time consuming. Like you said the method may be quick but we have to do an hr's worth of reaseach to make it make sense 1st....
