I have been flashing recoveries since the G1 and im to stubborn to ask for help, but i cannot get CW3 to flash. Maybe im getting old lol. And i have tried both these methods.
ive tried multiple times..
for terminal emulator after i put in the commands it doesnt do anything. (is that what its supposed to do?) it shows like this
su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img (ive renamed file to recovery.img)
then when i goto check Rom manager at the top it says rom manger premium v3.0.0.2
Flash clockwork mod recovery
current recovery:2.5.1.2
latest recovery:2.5.1.2
by the way im currently on the rom
CyanogenMod for Glacier (myTouch 4G) :: V6.1.2-RC2 (12/21/2010, #2)
This is what I got

Same thing here man where is Amon_RA recovery lol
That is a CW 3 Recovery for Gingerbread. ROM Manager hasn't been updated so even if you have the correct recovery, ROM manager will still say 2.5.x.x
Reboot into recovery to see if it actually worked. The text will be yellow in 3.x.x.x or blue in 2.5.x.x
If you use terminal emulator it will give you a blank line after you flash_image.

does flashing cw3 through terminal emulator work?
flash_image not found???
I'm getting this message when attempting to flash the new clockwork recovery image.
Flash_image: not found
Can any of you guys tell me what's going wrong here. I'm using terminal commands and not getting anywhere.
Thanks.

Flashing through terminal works
Dwnld file from op it should already say recovery.img
move it to the root of your SD I use Linda file. Next open emulator
type :su then hit enter
type : flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
Type: enter
you will see absolutely nothing
that's ok just type
reboot recovery if you see cwm in yellow or gold honeycomb color
you're done if not keep trying
That's what I did

Sounds like the file isn't where you're telling it. Make sure the recovery you downloaded is named exactly recovery.img if you are writing:
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img

flash_image: not found
I'm really not sure what's going on with the emulator but it seems like this command is not part of the script for some reason...
I tried the same commands through adb shell and got the same response "flash_image: not found"
the adb method isn't exactly working out for me although I am persistent. I'm typing the command line EXACTLY and getting this response in the emulator, that's for sure.
finlly flashed cwm3 but everytime try to flash a rom says intallation aborted?

I have no idea where to put the new ra-evo recovery file so that fastboot sees it. I have looked sorry for the stupid question
your fast boot should be installed in ur android sdk tools folders so if thats where ur fast boot is then put the file in the tools folder
Fastboot flashes files from your computer not on the sdcard or anything.
Ex. Fastboot flash recovery /User/downloads/recovery.img
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
i am so confused
so if I am rooted and unlocked and I already have the original amon recovery i just put the new amon recovery in the tools folder. then how do I get it on my phone
if you already rooted you should have android sdk installed
easyest way
go to start
my computer
c drive or your main drive
android sdk or sdk (wat ever you named it)
tools folder
put recovery in tools forder
open a command prompt and
cd \android-sdk
cd tools
now your in the tools folder
fastboot flash recovery /recovery.img
it is easyer and faster no searching for the files if you put the recovery in the tools folder its already there no going to filesfoldersdownloads you dont need them commands its faster and easy look through the adb and sdk guides it has all commands and most recover forums tell you all this
so i need to change the name of the amon recovery image to recovery.img
No he was just using recovery.img as a example.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Here's how i did it this morning, downloaded file to pc, connect phone as disk drive, opened disk drive, placed the amon file into the sdcard, changed phone back to charge only, went to astro to verify that the amon file was on the home list of files, then wen to market and downloaded terminal emulator free, and just follow Amon's instructions to apply using terminal or adb, it was reall easy that way, i kept trying to load the fastboot way and just couldn't figure it out, so i tried this was and perfect, new recovery, and hopefully i can wipe dalvik now.
You don't need fastboot to flash a new recovery image. Like tomh said in the post above this one, put the new recovery on the root of your sdcard, open a terminal emulator on your phone and type the following:
flash_image recovery /sdcard/name_of_recovery.img
I haven't used my computer to update a recovery image since I first got my Hero.
with a terminal app you'll want to use this exact cmd's
su(press enter)
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-evo-v1.8.0.img(press enter)
reboot recovery(press enter)
that's just as amon_ra has it, same as what i used as well.
thanks for the help

Root your phone..
i jsut use rom manager. I am to lazy to do everything else currently rom manager has the latest amon ra you can tell it to flash as an "alternative" recovery. takes 2 seconds and no typing out "long" commands in terminal.
i was under the impression i was rooted...i did the OTA update to 2.2 then used the method to root that came out a week ago using unrevoked3 and unrevoked forever. but instead of going back to a rooted 2.2 i stayed on a rooted 2.1.

Huh, that's weird. What rom are you using?
If you're using a rooted rom then you should be getting a # when you type "su" into the terminal..
Do you have the SU app installed? Did you get an SU Permission request when you opened the terminal for the first time? If so, did you grant the terminal emulator SU permission?
im using a stock 2.1 rom and i do have superuser permissions installed. i also have setcpu for root users installed and "su" grants "setcpu" permission.
i also forgot to mention that i also put a "netarchy kernal" on their also which appears to me, works as it said. right now if i want to go into recovery it goes through clockwork, but i want to get amon ra's recovery on there instead.

hmm.. which 2.1 stock? Was it a rooted stock (with busybox and su already in there) or did you install the su app?
Although sounds like it already had busybox if setcpu is getting permission.
If you are near your computer see if you can get a # using the adb shell. I'm a little stumped here..
the 2.1 stock came with the "su" already. i just posted a quick update on the my previous post that i flashed a netarchy kernal on my evo also. i dont know if that helps but i just forgot to mention it...
please bare with me, im by my computer and to go into adb shell do i need to plug my evo in as charge only and open a cmd from android tools to see if i get # ???
i have a tmobile g2 and used visionary to root and it did not work right but my s-off and i can not root any way i try,if i have stock rom what do i have to do to reinstall the stom rom and will this make my g2 go back to s-on?
There is a guide to all this called super cid and radio s-off in Android Developement might be able to help plus links.
If you have is s-off you can try to go to Menu - Settings - Applications - Manage Applications and go to tabs at top and press All. Then scroll down until you see Superuser and press it. Unistall it and do the same for Visionary. Then press home and try reinstalling Visionary and see if it works. First check the box that say make system r/w .sh or something then temp root. Once done then try to perm root. If you go to theunlockr.com and search how to root G2 you will find video and written instructions step by step.

Remove Visionary and try the "rage" method instead - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834228 - except in that guide, do not do the step that tells you to do "dd if=/data/local/hboot-eng.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18". Do all the rest though.
If you haven't got adb working from your PC yet, follow this guide first to get adb going - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865685

Did the temp root bit go ok ? Did you get a root shell from running rage, with the "forked xxx children" message. Becuase those messages you posted are from the "root" script, and they indicate that rage isn't running.

Guys if your s-off you've already won the battle. All you need to do is go the the clockwork mod recovery thread. Grab the recovery that says for manually flashing from fastboot. Put that img on the root of your computers c drive named recovery.img. then download rom of your choice, I suggest starting with my stock w/root rom, and put it on the root of your sdcard.
im getting a error when trying to unzip the file and where is the root of my computer c drive?

*Following instructions in that post includes a wipe. This will delete settings, 3rd party apps, mms etc. Be sure to backup what's needed.
These directions are for windows computers:
Do not unzip the file. It should be clockwork recovery 2.x.x.x.img. just rename it recovery.img. The root of c just means not in any folders. So after naming it recovery.img put it on c. It will then be c:\recovery.img
Then when you open up cmd window, goto sdk folder like when you use adb. With your phone booted into hboot with usb connected. You type this into cmd window: "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" without the quotes. Then finish following pervious link.
goto sdk folder like when you use adb?HOW do i get in to sdk as i know how to get into adb?

From the link you said you followed, I assumed you have adb installed and have used it. If not you will have to look up how to install/use adb. When you install the sdk adb and fastboot are part of it. If fastboot is not included you can find it around page 19-21 of the rage root thread we been referenceing...
For refrence to get to folders you use cd command. So if you install sdk in folder called android on c drive. From cmd window it would be: cd.. (enter) cd..(enter). Till you were at c:\ . Then cd android (enter) cd sdk (enter) cd tools (enter) to get into tools folder. Then type fastboot commands...

If your using that, check this. In an open window/folder in windows. Click tools, then folder options. Select view tab. Uncheck "hide extensions of known file types". Then the file extensions should show at the end of every file. Make sure its named right now.
Okay, so i know several of you, like myself, have been trying to flash the recovery 3.x using flash_image through terminal but keep getting an error. This is because the rom you are using doesn't have the flash_image file in the /system/bin folder. I found these instructions on another section of the xda forums.
Disclaimer: I'm not responsible for any damage done to your phone. do this at your own risk..
1. Download and extract the file i have attached.
2. Copy the file to the root of your sdcard.
3. Open the terminal and type in these commands.
su [hit enter]
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system [hit enter]
cp /sdcard/flash_image /system/bin [hit enter]
Now your able to flash recovery 3.x from terminal using these commands
su [hit enter]
flash_image recovery /sdcard/(recovery name).img (recovery name is whatever you have your recovery 3.x named)
i hope this helps at least one person...

2. rename "recovery3......img" with "recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.4-glacier.img"
3.put this "recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.4-glacier.img" on sdcard/clockworkmod/download/koush.tandtgaming.com/recoveries/
4. Open Rom Manager and choose 2.2.1.4 from "All ClockworkMod Recoveries"
that earlest !!! then ClockworkMod Recovery v3..... will now be installed on your phone.

Have you tried to go into Rom Manager and flash the latest recovery for your phone? You can also try my method of installing ClockworkMod Recovery. It can be found HERE. If you have ADB/Fastboot set up you can also try pushing a new recovery img to your phone. If you dont have ADB set up you can use MY GUIDE to get it set up.
It sounds like your phone cant find the recovery img (could be missing).
Hit me with a PM and I can help walk ya through it if you need.

i am on cm7 nightly 24. i thought i would try to uninstall updates anyway. i went settings, applications, manage applications and rom manager is not there. i went to the market, thinking i would uninstall and reinstall rom manager and it only gives me the option to open. no uninstall. not sure what to do now,

When you reboot into recovery it should be cwm 3.0.0.5 (should be amber font)

it shows file not found, even when i write the name of the file.
From the htc stock rom, you need to do it from your pc using fastboot. It won't work with terminal emulator.
Which rom are you running?
Do you have adb installed on your pc?
If you have fastboot, put the recovery.img in the tools folder of your sdk, start up your phone to the bootloader, connect your phone with the usb cable then open a command promt, navigate to the tools folder and type
fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img
Press enter then type
fastboot reboot
Should take aboot 5 seconds

i think so, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537 i used that tut. is it so many different S-OFF's ?
Ok, with that s off method you can't use fastboot commands. Did you try the commands in adb shell?

if you mean the commands that is written in cmd, then i have already tried it, and it failed.
In the command prompt, navigate to your sdk then type
Adb devices
Press enter
Your device's serial number should show
Then type
Adb shell
Press enter
If you get a $ type su then press enter
Then enter the same commands you used in terminal emulator
Why do you want cwm 3? It's generally only for 2.3 roms.

I just installed it now thats why i want it, but do you know how i get back to the older cwm? do i just flash it in ROM manager?
Excellent. What worked finally?
To go back to an older version use rom manager or the use same way you upgraded.

You could try this, i haven't tried it myself so don't know if it works, but read it somewhere here on xda.
Go to this path with any file manager.
/mnt/sdcard/clockworkmod/download/koush.tandtgaming.com/recoveries
And copy that file to another folder. Then copy the name of that recovery (2.x.x.x) and then rename your 3.0.0.5 recovery with the old recovery name and just copy the new (2.x.x.x) to this path. (Just say yes to overwriting the file).
/mnt/sdcard/clockworkmod/download/koush.tandtgaming.com/recoveries
Then reboot and then boot into recovery and that should have changed the cwm from old to new. The color should be orange now and not green, if still green it didn't work.
If it doesn't work just restore the old recovery .img you've copied earlier (2.x.x.x).

Hello
just tried that worked flawlessly
thank you
So, my problem is that I have recently unlocked the bootloader on my HTC One X using my Mac and the very helpful guide provided on this YouTube link
http://youtu.be/8Y3VbFJIwWU
No problems with the process in that video and I've gotten to the end with the phone bootloader definitely.
My problem is that I've then attempted to install a custom ROM from the SD card. Again, this seems to work fine, but upon reboot I'm immediately hit with a continual pop-up 'unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped' with the only option to press ok. It loops continuously.
I suspect I may have to reinstall the ROM onto the SD card, but this is my problem. I cannot get my phone's USB access to work on my Mac as I am stuck with the above pop-up preventing me. I can't seem to access it via Recovery either.
Can I use fastboot to 'flash' over the *.img or *.zip of a new ROM to get it onto the SD card? Stuck with a phone I can't use otherwise. :crying:
Thanks.
Mount usb storage from the recovery.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
or while in recovery type
Code:
adb push rom.zip sdcard/
Thanks for that, athulele . :good:
I have tried that. On a Mac, for USB access requires that I use software called 'Android File Transfer' rather than the way Windows would do it. That software doesn't kick in via Recovery mounting. So, I'm going to need a different approach.
Since I have Windows installed via Bootcamp, I think I'll try to connect the phone up via Windows and see whether I can access the SD card via USB using that route.
Any other help is most welcome.
you do not need that file, just boot into recovery and type the command above... it's the easiest way

Having booted into recovery, using Terminal on my Mac and typing
adb push sentinelrom_v4_30_endeavoru.zip sdcard/
gives the following message:
-bash: adb: command not found
Am I doing something wrong here?
well, have you got the sdk installed on your mac?

I've now downloaded the sdk for mac. It's a adt bundle folder with many files inside. I've installed 'Eclipse' but I'm still getting the same message as before from the Terminal. What else do I need to do here?
Im not into macs .... but don't you need to enter sudo commands before the adb/fastboot commands ?
no, he only needs to navigate to the adb directory with the terminal and then type
Code:
./adb push rom.zip sdcard/

Hi matt95
I'm grateful for the help you are giving me here. I've found the adb file within the following downloaded directory path:
act-bundle-mac-x86_64-20130219 - sdk - platform-tools - adb
When I changed directory in Terminal to this path and ensured the specific rom.zip was also in that path, Terminal is still giving me this:
./adb push sentinelrom_v4_30_endeavoru.zip sdcard/
-bash: ./adb: No such file or directory
I must be doing something not right. Please help further.
that's strange, could you provide me the platform-tools folder and the rom.zip folder? i'll write down what you exactly have to write...

Slowly making progress. Latest Terminal message after doing that reads 'error: device not found'.
I am using ClockworMod Recovery v5.8.2.7 and have clicked on 'mount /sdcard'. I have tried to 'mount USB storage' but am getting an error message which reads 'E: Unable to open ums lunfile (No such file or directory).'
What should I do next?
Thanks.

I managed to find a copy of ClockworkMod Recovery v5.8.4.0 and flashed this as advised. This has somehow enabled the USB facility on my phone to start working again and I can replace the ROM I've downloaded onto it.
I just tried reinstalling the ROM I had again, but once again got the original message stated in my first post. I'm about to now try a different ROM to see if that makes any difference.
