[Q] USB Debugging - Cyanogenmod - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

is there anyway to enable usb debugging within the cyanogenmod?
I had to turn in off for the USB storage to work/connect, and now I don't see an option within the cyanogenmod that lets me turn it back on.
thanks.

Settings .... applications ... development .... should be there.

yo, thanks. That was a pretty easy.
Is it normal to have to turn of debugging in order to connect the phone as usb storage?

No problem, honestly I always have USB debugging checked by default and can't recall any issues. Sorry. Did you just start noticing it? Tried a reboot see if it works again? Can't say I've heard anything about leaving it checked. But I could have easily missed a post or two on it. Possible mount issue or maybe that doesn't apply here .. that first post is all I really have to offer ... sorry.

Newb with USB issues

Hello all. I'm TK, newb who has been lurking for a while. The forum has led me to some awesome changes with my Evo, but that may be catching up with me. I'm still rooted and running CM 7 with SZ 1.01, and none of my computers are able to recognize the USB drive on my phone, regardless of which cable I use.
I can't get ADB to work on my PC, so I'm not able to perform any commands for the phone.
Can anyone help me with this issue? It would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Do you have debugging(in application settings) on when trying to use adb? What about allow mock locations? Try turning debugging off and then turn it back on(while plugged in USB). If that doesn't work you could always go to recovery mode and enable USB toggle and get it connected that way. Also make sure you're actually pulling down the notification bar and selecting "mount".

Does your phone get recognized at all on your computer when you plug it in? If not you may have a hardware problem -> usb port is loose.
On my original cord that came with the phone I had to trim off about 2 centimeters off of the plastic to go in far enough to have my Toshiba laptop to read it. I have had to do the same thing to several cords since. Maybe your usb?

Yes, my computer just says that it doesn't recognize the hardware. it charges just fine by the computer.
I'm running ClockworkMod for my recovery, I'll check for USB Toggle there.
No joy on finding USB Toggle.
It's called something different. Can't remember but it's there, I believe. I've only been in Clockwork recovery like once.

USB Issue?

Hopefully you guys can help me out. I'm suddenly having issues with my phone not being detected by my PCs when it is connected via USB.
When i plug my phone into my PC, i receive the error message: "UBS Device not Recognized One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windowes does not recognize it." from my Windows XP PC. My Windows 7 PC is unable to recognize the device plugged in.
The strange thing is that even though my phone is not being recognized by the PCs, the phone will still charge.
The phone is not in USB Debugging Mode, and I've gone ahead and flashed 2 separate Kernals on my phone, but i still am having this issue. I have tested this out with 3 USB cables, on 3 separate computers (Work (win xp), Home (win7), and friends(win7)).
2 Days ago the USB worked fine for me as i was able to flash Franco Kernal and JB onto my Gnex, but suddenly it's not being recognized by my computer anymore.
Stumped.....Hoping that this isn't a hardware issue and something that i can fix without having any downtime away from my phone.
Any thoughts?
Try other USB port and other USB cable.
Sounds like you're missing some drivers... Remove the device completely in Device Manager & plug it again. For MTP, Windows 7 should find the drivers online by itself. If you need fastboot access, you'll have to download the seperate drivers for that. I'd recommend the GNex Toolkit in that case since it comes with the drivers included (you'll still need to install them of course )

Thx for the reply,
Yes, I have been using the GNEX tool kit, though not the 7.3 version that was released today. The 7.2 version was being used at home and on my work PC. I usually install the drivers from the toolkit then plug my phone in when done. The drivers have been recognizing my phone but not since 2 days go.
I'm currently trying to find the MTP checkbox in the phone Settings to double check if it's checked, but im having problems locating it.

Ah yes, that is where it was hiding....But unfortunately the checkbox is checked.
This seems like a hardware issue, but I'm not certain since the phone still recharges when plugged in

Could be... Charging doesn't necessary have anything to do with data transfer AFAIK... Do you see something in the Device Manager when you plug it? You might have to right click & do a re-scan to force detection.

Device Managers shows "Samsung Galaxy Nexus ADB Interface". The drivers look to be installed.
Also another odd thing, is that after i charge my phone and unplug it from my PC, it will continue to show that it is charging on the lock screen and in the top right corner of my phone. However if i go into Settings ---> about phone. It shows Battery Status : Not Charging.

You get that when the phone is running normally? I think for me that one only shows up when I put it in bootloader mode. In MTP mode it's just a media device like any other AFAIK... I'll check tomorrow when I'm back on my Windows laptop to be sure . Have you tried putting it in PTP mode? If so do you see the device as a camera or is it the same issue?

Basically the way the Nexus One talked to other systems through USB is completely different from the way the Galaxy Nexus does. The GN uses a new protocol called MTP. Your car stereo probably can't read the files on your phone because it doesn't have MTP support.
Phantom Charging Issue
So I've gone ahead and Fiddled around with my phone for the past day trying to fix my USB issue, and I've discovered that this issue may not be due to USB issues.
Throughout the day when i was playing around and trying to fix my USB recognizing issue, it miraculously started working again. Now I am able to connect to my PCs and transfer the desired files.
Upon this issue being resolved, i noticed that periodically the screen would turn on, on it's own while being off in the locked state. I observed this issue to see what may be causing this, and it is turning on due to my phone thinking that i plugged my micro USB cable in to charge it. The charging indicator on the batter flips on, and even the USB Debugger / MTP Notification is present in the notification drawer.
Apparently this is a known issue with the Battery or charging port with Gnex's. (See below the 2 youtube clips for more details for problem/fix.)

I believe my warranty is void since this phone was purchased in a different country and has had the bootload locked/unlocked a million times. Anyone else have this problem that they have been able to fix manually? Or am I going to have to cross my fingers, ship my phone to get it fixed, and hope the post man doesn't f**k up?

Weird top left icon

Can someone tell me what the top left icon is from, it doesn't exist in my notification pull down!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
That's the JellyBean USB Debugging icon that shows up when you have usb debugging on. Go to settings>developer options and you should see "usb debugging" or "android debugging". If it's on, then that's why. You can just turn it off and the icon will go away. If usb debugging is not on, then there's a problem. I wouldn't go quite as far as saying your phone's security is at risk, but with usb debugging on without the system realizing it, then that could be a possible exploit. There's another thread about this I saw earlier. If I find it again, I'll link it.

Ah, yes, that's the one. Unlike the poster in that thread, I'd recommend NOT ignoring it. Usb debugging can easily be exploited to gain access to your device.
I have disabled USB debugging completely and rebooted the phone and that icon is still present!

Usb debugging keeps enabling itself each time usb connected

I updated to stock jellybean rom and now whenever i connect usb, usb debugging enables itself, i can turn it off but next time usb is connected there it is. Also if i turn it off in developer options then turn developer options off it re-enables again any ideas its starting to get a little annoying now, thinking of going back to ics as this mtp transfer takes the living p**s to transfer anything to or from the fone

Same here on T-mobile branded One x, really annoying when all you want is to plug in and charge!
My 1st port of call would be try a factory reset if haven't done already & don't forget to back anything important up.

Well yeah i too tried a lot to disable that thing, takes too much of the bar space!
Actually, according to me, you should get new JBean Custom ROM for your HOX.
Why? Well actually i just flashed the latest Team Venom ViperX for my HOX, and I am really relieved to see that USB debugging thing doesn't pop up now! :good:
As for the MTP Transfer, its not too bad too, considering how we had to wait for the device to turn from Disk Mode to Charge Mode, etc, plus, the inaccessibility of SD apps at that moment.

Maybe this works (it did for me):
Go to developer options, turn off debugging, leave the phone in the developer options screen.
Now plug in the cable and it should ask if you want to enable usb debugging, so press no this time.
Now disable the whole developer options with the switch on top of the screen.
Just go back out of the settings, plug the USB out and in and let's see...
This is all I had done.
Hope this works for you too.

Hey bro
So i guess you are asking for a review of the ROM?
Well its faster than renovate/stock and a haven for customizations
I havent run any benchmarks as of yet, but i believe it faster than most of the devices around me here. :good:
There are some running glitches, and i nearly had the shock of my life when after installation, the radio functions stopped working, even after full wipes, and going back to stock (Fixed now though :victory: )
I was waiting for this for such a long time, and i guess its worth it! :")
just flashed my first custom android rom (i know i know i left it a bit long) and its sorted the problem....need to get back into this its all changed since i last dabbled with touch pro and hd2 cheers for the help :good:
Same problem here- debugging enables itself

Did you ever resolve this? The thread seems to have wandered a bit off-topic, but I'm having this issue.
I went into Developer Options and turned off "Debug mode when USB is connected"
Then I turned off Developer Options entirely (slider at the top of Developer options section)
Yet after a while, when I plug in the phone, debug mode is enabled.
Not to be paranoid, but could something be turning on/enabling debugging by itself? I wonder aloud...
I'm on a stock ATT HTC One X+, the device is Bootloader unlocked and rooted, but I'm not running any custom RoMs.

When you plug in the usb the htc sync manager automatically enables usb debugging. if you plug in the phone and then pull down the notification bar there should be something that says "USB connected" select that and then down below there should be something similar to "HTC Sync Manager" make sure it's unchecked.
My guess is that they resolved this already, as the last post is almost 1 year old !

No, I never resolved it. Unless you would say that moving to a different phone counts... That's what I ended up doing. Bricked the HTC One X+ trying to do a factory reset (I had device encryption, and couldn't get that off and then factory reset, but I digress.)
But no... I never did get USB Debugging mode to ever really stay disabled.

Here's the best solution...
1. Goto Settings ~ Apps ~ Settings App ~ Clear Data.
2. Restart your phone.
3. Goto Settings ~About Phone ~ Tap Build Number 6 - 7 times.
4. Then Goto Developer option , enable developer option then turn off usb debugging, atlast turn off the developer option.
5. Enjoy.

How do I stop my VS985 from asking for permission to enable MTP every single time?

Isn't it supposed to remember what I choose?? It remembers that I've allowed the PC USB debugging permissions, but not normal USB connection. Every time I plug it in it runs as this Verizon Installer ****. I have to go onto my phone and either pull down my notification shade > click USB options > click MTP or sometimes a box will pop up and ask me to hit 'Allow.' Both of which are pretty difficult with a broken screen that only turns on 1 out of every 100 times.
Is this normal behavior?? Is there anything I can possibly do to fix this insanity? I've already tried the MTP Enabler app and of course it doesn't work and it drives me nuts.
I believe that is by design, to remind the user to pick which option he wants the USB to use. I don't see this as a hardship, but hey that is just me...
