[Q] Help rooting - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to root my Evo using the latest version of unrevoked, I've tried it both on my mac and pc. I've had no trouble installing the drivers for pc. My only problem is that every time i connect my phone to either computer its just says " waiting for device" and never starts the process. I've read that if i mount it as a storage device on my mac that it would work and I've tried it and it still hasn't. any suggestions?

someone tell me if im wrong but i believe the latest revisions of the evo come with an currently unrootable bootloader..i havnt done much research lately on that but this is what i read a few weeks ago..good luck with that
edit:appears to be hacked with latest version// http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895208

unable to root evo 4g with simpleroot or unrevoked

Hi all
I tried to root my evo (which had received the OTA 1.47.651.1 update already), but I've run into some problems...
I tried using the simpleroot OTA edition, but kept getting an error in step 3 where the script was unable to create a file in /data/app-cache/...
After that I tried the newly released unrevoked 3 method, which appeared to be working until near the end it rebooted the phone and said it was flashing the recovery, but the phone booted as normal and the program sat there saying it was flashing the recovery for >10min at which point I closed the program.
I was going to try one of the manual methods, but new when I boot into the HBOOT I get an error saying the main version is older, update failed. I've tried a couple different PC36IMG.zip files and all of them get the same error. And if I try to do a factory reset the phone just boots into the HBOOT screen and does nothing.
My phone can still boot normally and is usable except the camera will not turn on.
Can anyone try to help me fix my phone and get it rooted? Or at least restored to its original state?
Thanks in advance for any help!
ok scratch the camera part, after leaving the phone off for a bit and rebooting it appears to be working again... but the rest is still messed up
i had the same or similar problem because i had tried both root methods.
i got it to work with unrevoked 3 after:
1. removing pc36img.zip from the root of the SD card (apparently it'll always try to load a local image before attempting to connect to the PC)
2. uninstalling htc sync from the PC (others say this wasn't necessary, but it was definitely the step that allowed it to work successfully for me)
It turns out PDAnet also interferes with the driver accessing the evo.
Once i removed htc sync and pdanet both from my computer i was able to root my phone successfully.
not sure what the issue with simpleroot was though, but i didn't explore too deeply since unrevoked 3.1 worked now.
Man, that just saved the day for me! Thanks for the info about deleting the zip file.
hey I am having a similar proble with not being able to root. I tried all the stuff you guys suggested but it still wont work.
-i never installed htc sync or PDAnet
am i doing something wrong?

[Q] Need Help Rooting in XP [SOLVED]

Hello,
I've rooted my phone before with win7 but today im at work and after unrooting my phone (UI issues i had to fix) i am now trying to root it again but on a Win XP computer. I have the drivers and the Unrevoked reflash pkg unzipped and all that + i made sure i have USB debugging turned on. I tried 2 ways of doing it once with debugging on before i ran the reflash and once where i turned it on after starting the reflash.
Is there anyone who may have some ideas on what issues i'm facing?
I found a fix to that issue but now im stuck with as message saying waiting for bootloader; make sure driver is installed!
Ignore this thread now...I fixed it myself!!! yay me!
lol might want to add some where if it isn't posted elsewhere that if you have WinXP you need to make sure your HTC drivers are installed. And to do that you can download HTC Sync from their website then uninstall HTC Sync but not the drivers!!!!
After that if you already had the Android USB modified drivers installed you will need to do that again! Don't ask me why but you do because I had to lol. After that everything should be fine when you go to use Unrevoked 3.21 (or newest one that will come out after that).
I did run into an error where communication with the phone was severred but i just ran the reflash tool again and it worked. (random error)

[Q] Drivers for root possibly corrupted?

So I had to take my EVO in to get replaced today for screen issues. Got the new one home, same 004, 3.30 versions. Fire up UnrEVOked3 and away I go!
First time I got Internal error: Couldn't find misc.
So, I looked around and didn't really find any useful answers, so I formatted my SD card, popped into the OS to make a quick phone call and then ran UnrEVOked again. This time it says "This was a triumph." However S-ON is still listed in the boot loader.
So I make ABSOLUTELY certain that my driver is still there in the 3 minutes I didn't check it. Instead of saying Android Bootloader Interface or whatever it said a few minutes ago, it now says "Android Composite ADB Interface". I have NO clue what this is, and there's only 3 threads or so even mentioning it. I tried uninstallling and reinstalling the driver, but I get the same thing..
Any suggestions on how I can get this to work? I really want to root this thing, lol.
Im looking to root my phone as well and I read alot before I take on this kind of thing... I have read in several places, your version can't be rooted "yet"... Google your software version along with your hboot... See if any one can do it yet
Sent from the MATRIX... while plugged into my EVO... using the XDA app... from a galaxy far-far away.......
That's the thing. My previous phone was the same hardware and software version. It should work.
The only thing that has changed is the driver in the device manager.
Unrevoked can not be used on your phone to root it you have to use a defferent method. check your hboot, is it 2.02??? If it is go in the developers section and look for the rooting with hboot 2.02 Like a Boss post and follow the directions.

Rooting trouble.

I tried to search through forums and not finding anything helpfull.
I have 2.2 on my incredible. At first when I tried to root with unrevoked it would do the first reboot and then say waiting for reboot. Then it would breifly say something like waiting to settle then give me a error about lost communication and try again.
I tried a couple of times and same issue. Then after coming back to try about 2 hours later, I can't run the program any more. I get a unexpected error. Any ideas on how to fix both issues?
I followed the guide and uninstalled those programs that it listed. And installed the drivers that it needed.
do you have the latest version of unrevoked?
I do or at least I think I do. I went to their page and got it directly from them.
I got the program running again, guess my comp needed to be turned off for awhile. But I still get comm lost unexpectedly with phone error.
I can hear the usb sound being played for something being connected and disconnected. Any ideas on how to stop that?
If you ever had HTC sync installed on your pc there are two apps that need to be uninstalled. Both are called HTC 'something'. Go to Add/Remove programs and make sure both are gone.
Also, did you read the unrevoked faq? There are other programs that can cause problems if installed on your pc.

[Q] Problems Rooting Incredible

I tried searching for a solution to this but am having a hard time finding anything.
Basically, I am trying to root my friend's Incredible for him with unrevoked and I'm having some trouble.
First I got a message that there was a problem with the CID backup. I talked to some people from the unrevoked team and they gave me a fix but they then said that he had a weird unusual file they would have to look into.
So then I tried again for the hell of it and instead of that error message I got one saying that root failed perhaps my firmware version isn't supported.
Does anyone know if a firmware version isn't supported and if there is a manual method using adb?
Thanks for any help
I am also trying to root a friends right now. I have the hboot drivers installed, but it just says "Pushing Recover" forever and never does anything. Sucks!! I have rooted quite a few Evo's without a hitch........this is a realy bummer
I've rooted my incredible without any issues in the past, that seems kind of strange.. hopefully unrevoked team can get that figured out for you.
Yeah, I've rooted a bunch of Evos and I don't think any of them went through with out a flaw and I had to use adb for all but one.
Is it a SLCD incredible? I had an unusually hard time with my lady's inc. Meanwhile mine was rooted first time. Wonder if changes between the 2 shipments happened? I just kept trying and eventually it went. Hardest part was to get her computer to accept the ADB Drivers...
I'm not sure, would that be in the about phone setting or is it associated with a certain hard ware version? How many times did you try it cause I think we did at least five haha.
Also were you getting similar error messages?
You can tell by the screen itself. If there's a backlight its an SLCD. But sadly I have no idea if it really makes a difference. It took me 3 tries and it randomly worked. I changed nothing in my method.
You don't remember the error messages you got were do you?
I personally don't know how you could tell which one you had. Maybe google search your phone's model number or hardware version to see there are any answers out there.
I used a Mac to root my Inc and it went smoothly after two tries haha. The Mac version does not require you to install drivers, so if you want to try that method have at it.
if you go into settings/about phone/hardware, and if under hardware version it says 0002 its "amoled" and if its says 0003 its "slcd".
