Accessing the web and market without android data plan

this may be a dumb question, but I just got the wife a G2 from Best Buy for Xmas ( awaiting it to be shipped ) and she now has a Cliq. I just got a new Cliq 1 month ago due to insurance replacement and I plan on giving my grandma her Cliq. lol yes my grandma....she has a BB and FB...lol anywho, I know she doesnt have a data plan but my question is
if she is on wifi can she access the web and android market without charge and if so, if she downloads apps, when she is not on wifi will she be charged for using the apps such as hancent for text and things of that nature?
Wifi works just fine without a data plan, that's what I do as I'm still on a prepaid plan. No charges for wifi data as your not using their network. Standard SMS fees even while using Handcent will apply. If you want free SMS sign her up for google voice, but of course you won't be able to utilize it off of wifi if you have no data.
she has a reg plan, just not an android web plan, just minutes and text/pics. Its good to know she can download apps without a prob then. but...... will it be considered data through android web if she uses the apps not on wifi. she has a text plan i think
I believe that apps that require internet access to function simply won't if she's not on WiFi.
I don't think you can simply start accessing T-Mo's data connection without a plan so she should be fine. Just know that getting away from the WiFi signal may cause some apps to not work.
k, thanks guys....ill be back when my wife lets me root her g2...lol
I'd kill the APN settings on that sucka except for the MMS settings. Make sure the data is dead because in a lot of cases they can remove the actual plan, but not the data feature all together. This can result in even more expensive data charges ironically.
Make sure to call in and review this with a CSR so they note it on file in the event of an overage. I worked for an outsourced call center that did work for T-Mobile yeeeeaaars ago. They've always had liberal billing policies from what I remember so it shouldn't be a problem. I actually with they were in Canada because the providers here SUCK!

[Q] How to permanently disable 3G

I dont have a data plan for my slide, I just want to use my regular minutes to be able to talk on it while I'm on the road and use wireless for everything else when I'm at home, work, etc. I've got the 3G turned off, but about once a day it seems to turn itself back on. How do I turn it off permanently? I dont want any data charges or anything.
By the way I'm not rooted, but I think I'll do that and put on a 2.2 ROM this weekend.
Thanks.

Longpress power button, turn off connection to mobile network. You may still see the 3g icon at times because picture messages and certain data communication goes over the data anyway. But you won't get charged for that. But if you root and flash a 2.2 rom, beware that you will not be able to send/receive ANY data if you turn data off, which means no picture messaging either. In the stock roms it still allows picture messaging.

If you root and flash a new rom, there's an app that restricts what applications can use data. I'm pretty sure its called DroidWall. I put it on my friend's droid so he can pic message without other apps using data.

[Q] Using G1 Android on T-Moble Pre-paid with low data plan

I think I managed to say a lot of money by going with a low data plan, but they're telling me the android is going to constantly ping the Internet using up all the data allowance. Is there a way to disable the data functionality when I don't want it (like turning off wireless on a laptop)? When I'm connected to a Wi-Fi network, does it automatically use the local network instead of data minutes? If not, how can I make it do that.
I was able to find my data usage on my.t-mobile.com and verify that as long as Wi-fi is available, it will use it instead of the data plan. I was also able to confirm through another test that images in text messages don't count on the data plan, but under texts instead.
This is good. Now I have to find out how to tell if applications are pinging the network on their own or not.
yes indeed

Arc s pxts trouble

Hey guys, I'm on 2Degrees(which goes through Vodafone i think) in New Zealand, and I'm not on a data plan, just prepay.
I can't seem to send pxt's unless I enable 'data roaming' and 'mobile networks', which if I'm correct uses data and eats my prepay time.
I just get a 'Could not send. Message will be sent when service becomes available' error
My mate has the exact same setup with his sensation, and can send/receive pxt's without enabling any mobile networks or data roaming, when he sends or receive a pxt, his '3g' symbol pops up and the pxt sends.
So my question is, is there something I need to do to be able to send and receive pxt's without having to use mobile data and eating into my prepay money, because I know this is possible, just not sure why it's not working on this phone.
I've attached some pics of my apn settings, from what I can tell they are all correct...
Thanks for your help!

Did some research on Google...
PXT requires MMS to be used, MMS requires 3G internet in order to send the stuff. All the photos/audio files and stuff can only be sent over Internet. There is no other way.
You need to have MMS settings in your phone. Data roaming is not required at all. MMS downloading will not eat your money for data, as MMS settings are used for it. MMS settings don't allow you to surf on the internet, these settings are only for sending and receiving MMS.

That makes sense to a degree,
So i need internet access to be able to send MMS?, which means I need to enable mobile networks and data roaming(since I'm not on a data plan I have to enable these or I can't get internet access, therefore no MMS).
But what your saying is even though I enable internet access, the MMS side of it doesn't actually eat into the data, since it's sent a different way, visa vie, it doesn't eat my pre paid moneys...
I just wonder if there is a way to only get data turned on when it's needed for MMS, other wise all my apps are constantly updating and eating my credit...

MMS will use the data itself when it is needed. Mobile networks doesn't have to be turned on, it is only needed if you want to surf on the internet.. Data Roaming is only used if you want to use your phone's internet in another country(which is f**king expensive).
I received an MMS on my Arc S once, I didn't have internet settings on my phone, just MMS settings(APN stuff). I got an SMS, then used the download option. Data was turned on automatically, MMS was downloaded and data was turned off again. No charges for me.

Thanks
That all makes total sense, my only problem is, I can't send or receive pxts unless i enable both mobile networks and data roaming, I've literally tested it in all ways i can, and it wont work unless they are both enabled.

hotspot error when recieving text or phone call

I under that Sprint VoLTE may get rolled out next year which may fix this problem.
My hotspot works on my Note 4 but if I receive a phone call or a text message it automatically shuts down and I receive the following error. "Unable to connect to data network, turning off Hotspot"
I know I can't surf and talk on the phone at the same time but is there a way for the hotspot to stay on so when I hang up the phone I can go back to surfing?
This is an major inconvience because I have my Note 4 tied to my home phone system through bluetooth. My Note 4 stays upstairs in a window where I get the best reception in my house. So when the hotspot errors, I have to go upstair and turn it back on.
Any advice?
Thanks.

+1 Very annoying indeed. I have the same problem... It's especially annoying because I set up Google voice to answer all my calls but as soon as it rings from hangouts I lose Internet connection and the voip call drops. Then the phone goes to cellular and I have to answer the phone that way... How do I prevent this? Not call screening I hope.
Easy fix - don't use Sprint for your ISP.
Some of us don't have that option.
That's fine, just realize that you're violating the T&C of your contact and leaching the bandwidth for the rest of us. If you do this, don't EVER complain about crappy download speeds on LTE or 3g since it's probably just someone using that tower as their personal pipeline. RIP unlimited data if this continues.
And there is a fix, use the search function.
Pilotmills, do you have a link to the fix?
Or, do you know what words I should search on?
I can't find the fix.
Thanks.
