[Q] Help? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello All,
I've been browsing and searching pretty much all day, so I'm now going to ask for help.
Symptoms:
My screen is black. No white bars. Nada.
I know the phone turns on because the charging light goes off and the phone vibrates once when I press the down volume and power to go into recovery.
Preceding events:
I had just finished making a phone call, and the phone rebooted. I (was) running OMGB v6. When it came back, it started into a boot loop. It would run through the splash animation and then restart.
So, I decided to clear everything out and re-flash. Pulled my card out, wiped everything. Backed up my card, cleared it out, formatted it, and put the rom image in the root directory. When I tried to flash, I received the following error:
Cant mount /dev/block/mmcb1k0p1 (Invalid Argument)
Mounting /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 on /data failed: Invalid argument
I pushed parted (and a few other files) in adb and checked out what was going on. It looked like my phone's internal memory had somehow become screwed. So, I followed the directions outlined here:
forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/6433-solved-messed-up-partitions-on-internal-storage (Sorry, can't post links yet. I'm not that cool. .smirk.)
When I got to the step of re-flashing PN31IMG.zip, Everything seemed to go through fine, then it rebooted and Voila! The screen is dead.
I think it may be because I have the slcd version, but I have no way of knowing for sure.
Any input or suggestions would be both welcome and helpful.

EDIT: Can you even get into hboot?
And you formatted your SD card as FAT32 right?
Probably a SLCD screen and the PB31IMG was for 2.1/AMOLED.
Try this guide. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786436
Flash the PB32IMG.zip in part 2. It's the stock 2.2 with support for the SLCD model. Thats just my 2 cents.

Input: In addition to searching and browsing, you should post your thread in the right section.
and yes as said above it was probably the incorrect screen version.

EDIT: I am doing just as you advised. Will post after trying. Thanks!
I am fairly certain that I can get into hboot, as this is what happens:
Press and hold down volume and Power
Wait 5 seconds, release power/volume down
Charging light goes off
Camera shutter clicks
I wait a good 15 seconds, just in case it's scanning my sdcard
Then, I presume it is in hboot and press the volume down key to move the selection to recovery, then press power to select, so that I can *hopefully* adb to fix it
It vibrates, as though going into recovery, But I can't see anything on the screen from start to finish, so I'm not sure.
And I have to be screwing it up somewhere, because no device is detected in adb

Thank you, kind sir.
As I am obviously ill-educated as to the correct place to post, would you mind pointing me in the right direction; or, as you agree with my assessment, offering a solution?

Update:
So, I finally got the timing right and booted the phone enough to get to adb.
I pushed parted and associated files to the phone and re-partitioned the internal memory (Swap, EXT2, FAT32), then disconnected from the computer.
I pulled the battery for 30 Minutes. Unnecessary? Probably. But I'm saying what I did just in case someone else has this issue.
While the battery was pulled, I downloaded:
ttp://dougpiston.com/files/RUU/build-3.26.605.1-release-152016-baseband-2.15.00.07.28-hboot-0.92.0000_PB31IMG.zip
I formatted a 4gb card FAT32, and loaded said zip on the card's root directory. Then I turned the phone on and held the down volume to enter hboot.
I waited 5 minutes. Then I pressed the up volume key to confirm installation aaaaaaannnnddd......
I waited. 15 minutes this time. Then I pressed volume up to confirm phone reboot. 90 seconds later my screen came on, and booted into VZW stock!
Oh, and kaiserII101 - I would like to extend my personal thanks to you for pointing out that this was in the wrong thread.... ..... and then not responding. Where I come from, that's called asshattery. Not appreciated. Next time you feel obliged to make a snarky comment instead of actually being helpful, do us all a favor: Don't.

Most cool - glad that worked, and thanks for posting the means to correct it so others may benefit from your experience!
Had a similar thing happen as well a while back ~ since then, I've made weekly copies of my SD card onto my PC - overkill perhaps, but then there's always a full backup of my goodies.
Happy modding!

I'm glad you got it working and I'm even more glad that I don't have the SLCD version of the Dinc. They just have so many issues...
Have fun!

HTC Magic with CyanogenMod 4.2.15.1

Hello,
I'm new to the Android scene and already I have a problem.
I successfully upgraded my HTC Magic with Cyanogenmod.
I did it exactly like it said in the instructions on cyanogenmod wiki.
Installed Android SDK R05 for Windows and used:
bc-4.2.15.1-ebi1-signed
recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.6.2H.img
update-cm-4.2.15.1-signed
DRC83_base_defanged
HTC_ADP_1.6_DRC83_rooted_base
So i did the magic on Magic and the CyanogenMod worked, at least until recently.
My co-worker asked me to lend him my sdcard so i opened the magic and took out the sdcard from my htc that was on while i did that.
Than the trouble came forth...After a reboot the phone started booting for a long time...than it showed an error that the sdcard wasn't unmounted properly, and it didn't go away even when i inserted the sdcard back in, even after a hundred or so reboots. Than it started to crash the processes (acore and such)
Than after a milionth reboot the screen and the accelerometer stoped working, soon after that the keys followed the screen and the acc. I was thinking maybe the screen and the keys stoped working permanently and wanted to throw the phone away. But after another optimistic restart the keys worked for some time than the ball when pressed stoped responding...so i could highlight an icon on the home screen but couldn't start it. Than i accidentaly pressed it on the screen and it worked, but shortly after that everything was dead again. Than the phone started rebooting on a low battery. When rebooting to bootloader (with the battery fully charged) the screen flashes and nothing responds. But it still shows in a flash those three androids on the skates. And i can't seem to adb push the recovery.img to the sdcard...states some Read only problem. Sdcard seems alright through the card reader. So that is about it of all the problems.
So i was hoping some experts on here could give me some feedback on the device. Is it finished or can I rescue it. I really fell in love with this phone so I would much rather here the second option. I'm attaching the log from adb logcat if it is for any use to any of you...
Thanks in advance

No space left on device

Afternoon all,
Last night I left my Desire charging as normal, having recently installed the Remote Media App. I suspect it used up all my storage with some sort of indexing process, as I returned to the phone this morning to find it perpetually showing the glinting HTC logo.
A reboot failed to clear it, and booting into recovery mode reveals"E:Error in DATA:data/recovery/log, (No space left on device)"
I've tried connecting to it with adb, but I get the following error
- exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2) -
Is there any way out of this bind? I had/have ClockWorkMod recovery installed in order to use ROM Manager, but I'm not terribly clued up on what else is out there on offer.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Kyle
Try rebooting the phone into recovery mode and wipe/factory reset and see if this fixes it?
(Although you will loose all your apps/settings/scenes, though)
This should resolve the problem though.
hehe, there is always that option. I was hoping not to lose texts, settings, etc though this time round. Sadly my backup is more than a few days old.
I was mistaken in thinking I had ClockWorkMods recovery image installed, it appears to have gone back to the default image. I've just discovered a modified recovery ROM from JesusFreke here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=443041 which may be of use.
Having to wipe and start from scratch again is a disgustingly appaling out of space failure mode. >:-/
bin the phone and use a pineapple
That recovery image is for G1! Don't even think about flashing it.
Even if you have stock recovery, you should still be able to clear storage from HBOOT.
Regards,
Dave
One other thing that might be worth trying is booting the device in safe mode.
Whilst the phone is power down, hold down the menu button and then power on - keep menu held down until the phone is fully booted.
I doubt that it will help in this situation, since clearly /data is completely full, but there's always a slim chance it work.
Regards,
Dave

Thanks for the advice m, I'll be sure to kick you in the nads next time you cross the border
Sadly Safe Mode fails too. The HTC logo appears and glints for a while, and then briefly vanishes just to reappear again. My thumb got sore after 5 minutes of holding the button down
I realised that was a G1 ROM shortly after reading more about it! I see there may be a more suitable recovery ROM at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=709146 that I can flash. Failing that, then I'll clear storage and consign myself to failure
Wahey! It's sorted! Well, it was sorted a couple of hours ago, but a meeting got in the way
Wrote up some of the details here - http://lodge.glasgownet.com/2010/08/31/recovering-a-htc-desire/ if anyone is interested!

Sorry to dig up an OLD OLD thread, but your "guide" helped me out last night.
In addition to looking for "big" items in the data partition, I also moved some of the Google updates (5meg Maps.apk anyone ?) from /data/app to /system/app ... renaming to overwrite the original version from my Rom.
Thanks Again.

[Q] Tried to update, now unuseable

So I have upgraded my i927 captivate glide using the ROM from , but I only Androidupdate com called I927UCLH2_I927ATTLH2_I927UCLH2_Home tar md5 but I get a black screen with a slide down menu saying the date ‘Ongoing’ and an option to change the way that the device connects to another computer.
The update stated pass, it booted and proceeded to tell me that it was updating apps or something like that, then a black screen with the pull down menu from the top of the screen near the usb symbol came up but nothing else. I got a message a few hours later stating that the update application or something like that was not responding and an option to wait or quit. I chose wait, but nothing came of it eventually.
I then proceeded to try reflashing the process with no success even after factory reset and rebooting.
I then tried the pre-release ICS update as per XDA developers and other websites. Same thing
I tried a few other ODIN programs and ROMs but no success. Same issues including the hang up on the Samsung logo. I tried rooting it once and for some reason it started up into what looked like the same pull down menu, but it was requesting that I needed an to input a lock code for the network. I assume that is because my sim card was in it by now, but maybe not. I got so frustrated that I tried the bootloader and update bootloader options using the official ICS update ROM for some stupid reason but nothing. The thing is that at least it booted into the pull down menu that i got with a black screen again.
I then flashed with an updated ICS, CWM6 but cannot do the:
Third: Reboot into CWM6 (Volume- and power) install from sdcard (superuser)
Link to superuser: Superuser-3.2-RC2-arm-signed zip
Forth: Repeat third step above but install keyboard fix.
Link to keyboard fix: CWM_keyboard_backlight_fix zip
since I do not have an SD card that is working. I did get the SD Card in the device but I have always had problems with the format of it and I cannot put the zips onto the card due to the computer Win7 not recognizing it. I tried reformatting the device is HPUSB format program and windows. I inserted the card into the device to hopefully have it recognized on windows, and i gave me an option to format the SD card. So I proceeded and success. I was able to put the Zips onto the card. However, I returned to the CWM6 screen by pressing the VOL- and power keys but the files were no where to be found on the SD Card.
I moved on after a few other tries at it, so I tried to go backwards to the Gingerbread ROM. No success, same hanging issue at the Samsung logo.
I then tried to reflash with the devices original ROM as provided by DroidAngel on androidupdate com. Both without success.
I wanted to try the process involved on the 'stuck on boot screen' thread, but I cannot access the zip files on the sdcard in order to be able to do that.
I also bought my phone unlocked from the US (ATT version) and had it sent to me in Canada unlocked so I cannot just return it to the seller to get a new one, so my new phone is pretty useless.
I have spent two days reading through and trying different fixes and updated ROMs on multiple sites but I just cannot figure out what the heck to do now. I know that this site is not to spoon feed people and I am a noob to all of this but I am out of ideas and cannot find anything else to help out.
Where do I go from here. Is there a possibility of reformatting EVERYTHING on the device including all partitions etc etc.? I mean the hardware is fine, it is just a software issue. I do this to my laptop whenever I get into a bind.
Have you tried booting into CWM and restoring factory?
sent from my captivate glide running ICS (NardROM 0.3 Rooted)
Just a note, the SD card you're seeing in CWMR isn't actually your physical SD card, its the internal phone memory. I don't think we have a version of CWMR that reads the real external SD unless modified. So anything you put on it won't show up there. The folder structure will look like ... /sdcard/external_sd/ where /sdcard/ is where you want to put your files for CMWR to see, /external_sd/ is your physical card you can take in/out.
I have tried to reflash with CWM6 using ODIN v3. I didn't realize that the SD card that came up was actually a part of the internal memory. Thanks to you both for the help.
Any other suggestions since no matter what I do now the phone simply stops at the Samsung logo and wont turn off? I press the power button for the required time to shut it down but it automatically restarts by itself to again sit at the Samsung logo.

A few questions about your situation right now:
Can you get into Download mode? (Turn off the device, in your case remove the battery. Press power en volume UP)
Can you get into CWM? (Turn off the device, in your case remove the battery. Press power en volume DOWN)
Does it keep asking you for the Network Key? Are you stuck at that particular point...?

Okay, so right now I can still get into the download mode to flash, the CWM6 to factory reset and reboot which I have tried already as stated, and I have not been asked for the network key again since the one time quite a long time ago. The network key is only asked when I load one of the other custom ROMS though, but I have not tried any of those in a while.
I am stuck at the black screen with white Samsung logo.
In CWM6, do you see "mounts and storage" (Second to last option)
If so, connect your phone with the USB cable and select "mounts and storage".
In there and select "mount USB storage" (Again, second to last option, you'll have to scroll to get to it)
Now your PC should see the USB storage which is in fact what is marked as internal SD. So the sdcard CWM can actually see and install things from.
Now you can copy a custom ROM to it, and install it through CWM. Or install anything that is in CWM format.
You may get the Network Key Request as before. I do not know if it can be bypassed by starting it without the SIM. If so, you could then try to unlock your device using one of the methods on the forum.
Alternatively, and highly recommended by yours truly, is to buy the unlock code.
It is somewhat common for these devices to re-lock, so having the code handy is very convenient. I used americanunlocker to get mine, and I put the code on the inside of the back-cover should I find myself re-locked in the middle of nowhere. The code works, and isn't that expensive. In fact, it's a steal if you look at your own time invested in all this in terms of hourly wage! Of course, you'll need the IMEI code. You can find that by removing the back-cover and the battery.
Good luck!
Got it running on Bio360 but 'Not Registered on Network' now

Thank you so much for the feedback, I actually had not thought about the unlock code idea, and since you put it into such perfect terms considering the time and effort that has to go into something like that, it is a good idea for sure to get one. The idea of keeping it on the inside of the back cover is another awesome idea. Kudos to you and thanks!
As for the rest of what you had stated about the mounting and what not; I actually mounted and successfully reflashed and installed all of the required files for the new ICS stock upgrade. The good news was that I got past the Samsung screen again and it said that it was updating all of the applications or whatever again, but then it just gave me the pull down menu again with very limited functionability.
I then used your suggestion to try out another ROM. I tried the Bio360 and followed all directions on the 'phone stuck on boot screen thread'. It worked! I finally have a functional phone again and will be able to get calls from my boss. Thanks!
Now that I know I have one option, I can explore any other options. I still cannot figure out how it is that I will be able to get the ICS upgrade but maybe I will try Kies.
However, I just found that I don't have network access anymore despite that I have a strong cell signal, so I presume that I will have to enter the unlock code somewhere. Where can I put that into? It didn't pop up to tell me anything.

You're very welcome! Glad to hear the phone is usable again. In order to get data back you will have to set your APN manually. Stock ROMs come with the APN settings for all providers it is expected to be sold with. But custom ROMs usually come without those settings. You can find the APN settings for your provider online, just do a search. There is even an app for it, but the name eludes me at the moment. You'll need wifi to get the app, though! Once the settings are in place (You put them in under wireless & Networks), you'll have data again.
As for the limited functionality, I had the same thing, at first. The upgrade was broken for me, I guess some settings/apps were causing problems. So, after flashing the upgrade, I did a factory reset in CWM. I also wiped the cache, and the Dalvik cache, for good measure(Under advanced in CWM). It rebooted, said it was upgrading and installing, and I let it sit for a few minutes. Then I was greeted by an initial setup screen, and the phone has been on a working ICS ever since! I did lose all my settings and such, but I had a back-up of those with Titanium Backup, and got those back that way.
Hope this will help as well.

[Q] Please help me with HTC Desire (stuck at boot)

OK Ive read alot of posts on here, but none of them seem to apply exactly to my issue....
A work colleague gave me their HTC desire to see if I can get it up and running again for them.
The phone powers-up to HTC logo/splash screen and that as far as it gets.
I put it into hboot menu but the volume buttons wouldnt let me move up and down the list (at first)
After repeated attempts I eventually got it to move, and I selected "clear storage" the phone restarted and booted properly.
I thought it was as simple as that, and that was it fixed, so i plugged the charger in and left it to charge the battery.
I returned about 30 minutes later, and the phone turned completely dark. I thought it was just in some sort of standby mode, but it did not respond to any button presses etc.
I removed the battery and then put it back, and once again the phone booted as far as HTC splash screen.
I have been unable to get past this since then, no matter what I try
The info from hboot menu is
BRAVO PVT1 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.93.0001
MICROP-031d
TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0101
RADIO-5.10.05.30
Aug 10 2010,17:52:18
A few points to note.....
The phone does not have a micro-sd card (although I have a blank one here if needed?)
The power button on the top of the phone is very sensitive and doesnt even need to be pressed to function (just brushing my finger over the top works)
The phone powers-up as soon as the battery is inserted.
Any advice/help on what I should do next?
Thanks for taking the time to read this

Use the PB99IMG method to flash the 2.3 ruu in my sig.
Download the zip, put it on the root of your sd-card, and boot in hboot. Then select yes.
Your internal data will be lost, but your phone will boot.
Thanks.
I copied downloaded zip to micro-sd card.
Put sd card in phone and powered to hboot.
didnt get an option to select 'yes' ?
The phone started loading from sdcard and a progress bar on the right hand side of screen.
phone showed...
SD Checking....
Loading...[PB99DIAG.zip]
No image!
Loading...[PB99DIAG.nbh]
No image or wrong image!
Loading...[PB99IMG.zip]
When it got to top of bar,it went back to hboot menu and froze.
Had to do battery pull.
Back to square one.
Any other ideas? or am I doing something wrong?

redownload and check md5sum of the zip file, that PB99IMG does work fine as its been used hundreds of times. also make sure the zip file aint in any folder on ur sdcard
re-downloaded and tried again but its the same.
Phone displays
SD Checking....
Loading...[PB99DIAG.zip]
No image!
Loading...[PB99DIAG.nbh]
No image or wrong image!
Loading...[PB99IMG.zip]
Then a green progress bar moves up the right hand side of screen.
When it gets to the top, the above info changes to
Checking...[PB99IMG.zip]
This stays on screen for a few seconds, then phone returns to HBOOT screen/menu
I dont get aby option to select 'yes'
it just starts loading automatically.
I put the zip file on the root of the msd card (its was the only file on there)
Dont know what to try next?
Thanks for your help so far

no this one is the exe version of the 2.3 gb upgrade, open the rar file, then open the "HTC Desire Android 2.3 Upgrade.zip" the ruu exe should be there and plug in ur phone to computer while in bootloader and run the ruu
Thank You, I eventually managed to get the 2.3 RUU installed. After upgrade, the battery was getting low, so i plugged in charger and left it. When I came back, battery was charged but this message was on the screen "Sorry The process android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly, Please try again" As soon as I pressed a button on the phone, it froze for about 30 seconds, then rebooted.
Back to htc splash screen on booting, only this time instead of freezing on htc screen, restarts and I am stuck in a bootloop. If i access hboot menu, I cannot select anything as the volume and power buttons dont do anything whilst in this screen.
Also as mentioned previously, a couple of things that concern me are (1) when the battery is inserted, the phone attempts to boot straight away without me having to press the power button, and (2) to access hboot menu, I simply have to hold in the volume down button, without touching the power button.
Should i be concerned about this?
Do you think maybe the phone has a hardware issue?
Thank You for all your help with this so far

yh sounds like hardware issue. try taking the phone appart and cleaning it, u will be surprised how much dust n crap is around the buttons and it could just be stuck. but the rebooting issue most probably is hardware im afraid.
Thanks m8,
Im gonna have one last go at this before I hand it back to its owner and tell him its fooked lol.
The phone is alot better with the new rom on it. Before it would boot about 1 in every 20 or 30 attempts.
With new rom its about 1 in 5
It seems to freeze or restart at boot at the part where it is writing "quietly brilliant" although its not always at exactly the same point.
The power button doesnt appear to be stuck, it presses and i can feel it 'click'
Im hoping it may still be software related but not holding my breath

[Q] Desire Help!!

Hi Guys,
A lot of this stuff is new to me. I have an old HTC Desire which I hadn’t turned on in a while. When I tried to boot it up, it only got as far as the O2 splash screen. I know the basics so tried volume down and power button and got to the fastboot screen,
Bravo PVT4 Ship S-on HBOOT-0.93 0001 MicroP-051d Touch Panel SYNT0101 Radio-5.09.050.30_2 August 10 2010
Tried recovery but again stalled on the splash screen. Been looking through the forum, some great info there and the HTC Desire troubleshooting guide is very good. But I just don’t know exactly whats wrong with the phone as sometimes I get a stall on screen with white HTC, sometimes on O2 splash screen and one time it stopped with three android men in the middle of the screen.
I got myself a SD Adapter for the micro sd in my phone and copied/backup this info on my laptop. I’ve tried clearing all on the Micro sd and running a RUU but always comes up with the error cannot connect to pc (windows 7). Don’t mind losing all on the sd card as I have pics/videos on the laptop, just want to have the phone work again. Would ideally like to start from scratch and put the minimum amount of information needed on my microsd to boot up the phone correctly. I think there may be a chance as I can get to the hboot screen. Appreciate any help I can get
Regards
Well done for finding the troubleshooting guide and having a read in the first place, a lot of people don't bother!
If you just want it booting, try running the the 2.3.3 RUU using the PB99IMG,zip method, which doesn't require a PC connection.
- Download the .zip URL="http://d-h.st/d44"]here[/URL],
- Put it directly on the root of the sd card (not in any folder)
- Boot to bootloader (Vol down + power)
- It should find the file, select power to run it.
Cheers Eddie for getting back so quickly.
Just tried what you said but getting "wrong image or no image" briefly flashing
up on the screen when i select bootloader. I put the zip file itself onto the root of the sd card. Should i delete everything else
on the sd card?
Another thing i've noticed is that i get seven random vibrates every now and again when it HBOOT mode.
Thanks again Eddie
That's weird, should find the file.
Sorry have to double check:
- You didn't rename the file? You shouldn't have to modify the zip at all, should be named PB99IMG.zip and not PB99IMG.zip.zip
- It's definitely on the root of the sd card (not in a folder)
You shouldn't need to format it as it scans the whole card for the file, but no harm in trying if it's backed up. Reformat the sd card completely, to a single FAT32 partition. Put only the zip on there, try again.
If that still doesn't work, try it with another sd card.
Getting there!!
Ok i got my HTC to recognise the zip file. Problem was PB99IMG file was called zip.zip. Easy to miss
because on the root of the sd card it only has .zip but when i tried to copy it in again it asked me do
i want to replace PB99IMG.zip.zip with PB99IMG.zip.zip...
So Vol down and power button and HTC starts the process
Do you want to start update .....vol up
Updated Bootloader ok but
unfortunately for me it stalled while updating RADIO V2.... waited good 5 mins but did not progress
Disappointed as i thought i was nearly there. Has anybody any experience of this!
Eddie only seen your post after i put this one up. You were right with the naming of the file .zip.zip
Eddie only seeing your post now. you were right about the .zip bit, cheers.
Tried again and this time success, got all updated except Radio which gave a "fail PU"
Down the bottom in black it said "partition update fail"
Then i pressed vol up to reboot Htc turned off... and didn't reboot
Going to leave it at that for now and head to bed. Thanks for your help today
If you have any ideas i'll give it a go tomorrow:fingers-crossed:
Well progress is good the .zip.zip error is surprisingly common.
Does it say "RADIO V2 Fail" or similar?
This unfortunately is not a good sign, suggests a radio brick, or an overheating motherboad I believe. You're not the only one to see this error.
Try putting the desire in a bag in the freezer for a few minutes (not joking), the re-running the RUU same method.
This may get it to boot, but I fear that it won't be long before the same thing happens again and it gets stuck on the splash screen, no guarantees at this point with that error.

Yeah "radio v2 fail" tried to run again but now won't turn on at all. Tried freezer...nothing and hasn't turned on since. I suspect your right with
motherboard over heating and i'm resigned to it being a lost cause.
Thanks for the help anyway Eddie
