okay so I have been rooted for some time now and decided i wanted to unroot (for reasons im still trying to figure out) so now i am on 2.1 update 1 and cannot update to froyo. when i go to settings>about phone>system update it says my phone is up to date and when download the official 2.2 update and rename it to update.zip and try to install it it says a bunch of stuff then e: error in sdcard update.zip (status 7) update aborted. my radio (baseband) version 1.00.03.04.06 . i have done the PB1IMG thing then tried to update and i get the same thing! I am pissed!
any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Matt
I haven't unrooted in a long time, but maybe it's related to the fact that you're still on the old radio? You might need to be on the official froyo radio which is 2.15.00.07.28
Thank you how do I get the new radio?

Be sure to take extra care when flashing radios. Don't pull the battery while it's updating and even if it looks like it's not doing anything, LEAVE THE PHONE ALONE. Read up in that topic for more information on how to flash radios.
I appreciate your help, I will study up and perform the update tonight. When I post back tonight with the results hopefully I will be updating to froyo

If you are going to go through the trouble of updating the radio and then hope the OTA will push, why not install the update? Its the same process and you'll be assured you have the 3.26 build.
Because I can not install the update right now if you read my first post I explain. It says update aborted

Your doing it wrong. My idea is you would be using hboot to flash the update. It will work and not fail.
You issue using the update.zip idea is phone is checking for files that aren't there and then aborting. Hboot will not look for these files and will upgrade you.
An even easier idea would be just to run the ruu if you have a windows PC.
I'm just trying to save you time and headache. You don't have take my advice.

I have no idea what the heck is up with my phone! does anyone have any ideas?

Don't open or unzip the file. Simply rename and move to SD card. Check the md5 to make sure the zip didn't go tits up during download.

I got myself into a interesting situation. A quick answer would be greatly appreciated:
1. I'm rooted.
2. Trying to install the OTA so I can run 2.2 the right way.
3. I started a thread asking for help because I was confused on unrooting my phone. Didn't get much help, a quick flame, and last someone chimed in to install the OTA from Rom Manager. I asked if I could do this with Root and the thread was killed.
4. I did. The boot screen was the new one. But the radio wasn't updated.
5. I then attempted to unroot my phone. Followed the PB31IMG.zip method. Phone booted normally. Root was lost.
6. This is where I am now.
7. My question is, if I install the OTA now renamed update.zip on my SD card, will I run the chance of bricking my phone because I installed it once from Rom Manager while I had root (#3/#4)??????
Please advise so I don't MOD EDIT up my phone.................
And if you're going to flame and insist I should of just followed the 2.2 leak instructions, you're correct. But I took someone's quick answer and tried it assuming they knew a better method.

Well, "the right way" would be to wait for the actual OTA. Verizon would also have your back if you brick. But, anyway...
If you're still on the 1.00.03.04.06 radio, you can probably follow the instructions in that thread now that you've flashed back to the stock ROM. However, there still seem to be a few cases of people bricking their phones or being stuck in a bootloop after flashing leaks.
If you are confused/concerned/afraid of bricks then you just shouldn't flash the leaked OTA. This is not a flame, this is sound advice. Wait for the real one.
I'm fine with flashing. I just keep hearing about this "double install OTA and brick your phone" issue and I'm trying to avoid doing that. If the one guy didn't chime in with the suggestion to use ROM Manager, I wouldn't of had this issue.
My radio is still 1.00.03.04.06. I just want to make sure I don't run a risk of bricking.

I personally have had a .77 HBOOT since I got my phone in April. My mom's phone, on the other hand, had the .79, which she has had since May, and she sure as hell didn't have no 720p camcorder. I don't think that the OP's phone having .79 means with any certainty that the OTA already applied once. I think the radio version listed on the HBOOT screen would be a better indicator.
But absolutely, running the PB13IMG should ensure that he's as far back as he can go, so why not try it just to be safe...

That's what I just did before I posted this thread. I installed the PB13IMG and restored everything back to stock. You asked about the HBOOT version and that's .79. I'm comfortable flashing and doing the update. What should HBOOT say? Has anyone successfully updated the OTA from .79 HBOOT?
Thank you for the help. Sorry for the questions. I completely comfortable with rooting, flashing roms, and kernals. This is going back to unroot stock is just new.
I want to install the OTA and I'm good to go. Just making sure it's safe now....

I appreciate the help guys. I guess my question would be if I ran PB13IMG, lost my root, back to stock, my HBOOT is .79 and my radio is still 1.00.03.04.06 and not 2.05.00.06.11, I should be at the same point as everyone else for installing the OTA from my SD card. Right or wrong?
When you read these threads and people are installing the OTA twice and bricking, are they installing the OTA again when the radio is already updated to 2.05.00.06.11?
Yep. I think you can flash it again, but be real cautious, as this is your second time flashing it, but if the radio is still the old versoin, you should be safe.

OK, so for the last couple of months I've been putting off updating with the ota just because when I tried to do it, it wouldn't go through because i rooted with unrevoked forever and my security is off (S-off).. So I finally get around to do it, but I can't figure out how to turn security back on (S-on). I thought I could do it by running unrevoked again but this time uncheck Disable security on phone. Well I tried it like 5 times and I still got S-off. So how do I turn it back on to get the newest update, or does anyone have it in an update.zip format?

Why do you want to do that?
That said, if it's what you really want to do, then download the latest PB31IMG file from Doug Piston's Site. Rename the file to PB31IMG.zip, put it on the root of your sdcard, and reboot into HBOOT. Follow the onscreen prompts.
You'll still have S-OFF, but that's not going to prevent the ROM from installing. If you don't want to replace things like your recovery, radio, hboot, with the defaults then remove those .img files from the zip file.
Here, to get s-off the file i attached should work. Its from the get back to stock thread

Yes. Removing the recovery.img means that you won't lose your ClockworkMod Recovery. Alternatively, you could download CWM 3.0.0.8 for the Inc from and replace the recovery.img file in the RUU so that you're flashing the latest CWM instead of the stock recovery.
Similarly, you can grab your favorite radio version from this thread and replace the radio.img file. The one built into the RUU is 07.28, whereas 11.19 is the latest that works with our phones (even if it did come from the Evo). If you're not sure which radio works best for you, then I'd advise starting with the stock 07.28 radio, and seeing which works best for you over time. Different radio versions can have different effects for people depending on their location. For many, it can improve signal strength (and, correspondingly, battery life). For others it makes things worse.
Also, you can't flash S-ON on the Inc unless you're running the 07.28 radio.
What is different with the new hboot?

I'll be honest, I don't know. However, some ROMs require the latest HBOOT to work, so it's worth upgrading while you're resetting everything else.

No, that's not going to work quite the same way. I've never peeked into the OTA file to see what's inside, so I don't know what kind of results you'll get.
Thank you so much, that helped a lot! So I pulled the doug pm31img.zip, put the new clockwork recovery into a new pm31img.zip then copied the contents of Doug pm31img to the new pm31img with out the recovery.img. then re-zipped it, do I need to use no compression? (I used winrar to create the new pm31img.zip)
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Compression ratio doesn't matter -- I used max with 7-zip. Just make sure you use Deflate, not Deflate64 or any other advanced compression method.
And make sure it's name is PB31IMG.zip, not PM31IMG.zip.
Oh, and make sure your SD card is FAT32 formatted, not FAT16.

so I tried the ruu from shipped roms and got a 171 error which I expected because I'm on windows 7. Now that is fixed and I'm getting a error 140 saying I have the wrong ruu
Well I found the correct ruu from Doug piston but when I run it I get error 155 unknown error, I can't win

Boot into hboot and see if it already says s-off by chance? I did some searching and it seems a lot of people who get this error end up noticing later that they did achieve s-off just not a custom recovery or root.
EDIT: You can also check this out.

I did see this link back in February and it said it was for advanced users, which I am not. I have rooted a couple nook colors and installed cm7 but never played with adb before. It may be time to learn

Try finding a stock PB31IMG.zip pulled from an official ruu and flash that thru hboot. I'll try to find a link for ya.

This was my last step that I tried last night before bed. I downloaded the zip from Doug piston and renamed it PB31IMG, booting into hboot nothing happened. By that point my battery was dying so I gave up for the day. This morning I used astro to double check the zip. It was listed as PB31IMG only so I tried to rename it PB31IMG.zip. Astro said that file already exists so I left it as is. I tried hboot again and it says something so fast I can hardly read it. I tried to read it about 20 times but it happens so fast, I think I need to video it so I can pause it. But what I could make out it was looking for something other than PB31IMG.zip

I had an issue kind of like this with my wife's Inc. I tried so many different things and nothing worked. I tried 2 laptops and 2 desktops, both XP and 7 and nada. One day I booted my PC into safe mode, which then allowed me to install the modded drivers from Unrevoked, ran Unrevoked and BAM the **** worked! Kind of a long shot but worth a try ....
okay, first off im gonna start out saying i am a samsung user and know nothing about htc. my buddy got an evo 4g for free and he wants me to root and install a rom, so i figured out i need s-on but have no idea how to do it. i tried the revolutionary thing but i entered the beta code and it always says invalid. please help! how do i do this?
Check your Hboot version first, if you haven't already done so. You can check the version by going into the bootloader (volume down+power). If it's 2.18 you'll have to use the Htcdev method to unlock the bootloader, install a custom recovery and root the phone. Revolutionary won't work with the newest Hboot. Incidentally, you don't have to have S-OFF to install a ROM or flash kernels, for that matter. So long as the bootloader is unlocked and the phone is rooted with a custom recovery, you're good to go.

For that h boot u can use revolutionary. First u need to install drivers ,make sure u check on usb debugging and unknown sources When u enter beta key make sure its entered correctly it is case sensitive from my PC36100 using xda premium
I found it worked much better just to copy the beta key and then paste it once prompted to enter it. It seems like a lot of people were getting errors trying to manually type the key in, but hey, if it works, it works

Okay, dumb question. When you entered the serial number of the phone to get the key, did you make sure you didn't use O for 0 (zero)? Not sure that could be part of the issue but worth looking at. I honestly can't think of anything else at this point. I remember when Revolutionary first came out last year, people were having a lot of issues with getting the beta key accepted. I for one didn't have this issue so I'm at a loss at this point.

HTC EVO 4G PC36100 ~ XDA Premium
If I recall correctly, there is a su binary file that you have to flash from recovery once you've run Revolutionary. It's a zip file that's in the Revolutionary guide. Running the su binary is what actually gives you root. You'll need to make sure that you have the app Superuser or SuperSU installed, as it will actually give permission for root apps (such as Titanium Backup) to operate. As far as kernels and such, look under the development section there, as there is a ton of great info there
Also, once you get rooted, I'd suggest going into Recovery and making a full Nandroid backup, especially if you plan on flashing a ROM or kernel. It'll come in handy if you get in a tight spot down the road.

I'm not sure what the problem was but I ended up updating to gb with 2.18 hboot then downgraded to android 2.2 then ran the unrevoked program then flashed a rom. Worked perfectly.
