OK, so for the last couple of months I've been putting off updating with the ota just because when I tried to do it, it wouldn't go through because i rooted with unrevoked forever and my security is off (S-off).. So I finally get around to do it, but I can't figure out how to turn security back on (S-on). I thought I could do it by running unrevoked again but this time uncheck Disable security on phone. Well I tried it like 5 times and I still got S-off. So how do I turn it back on to get the newest update, or does anyone have it in an update.zip format?

Why do you want to do that?
That said, if it's what you really want to do, then download the latest PB31IMG file from Doug Piston's Site. Rename the file to PB31IMG.zip, put it on the root of your sdcard, and reboot into HBOOT. Follow the onscreen prompts.
You'll still have S-OFF, but that's not going to prevent the ROM from installing. If you don't want to replace things like your recovery, radio, hboot, with the defaults then remove those .img files from the zip file.
Here, to get s-off the file i attached should work. Its from the get back to stock thread
So if I go get the newest pb31img.zip, that's basically the newest ota? And all I have to do is hboot install it?

Yes. Removing the recovery.img means that you won't lose your ClockworkMod Recovery. Alternatively, you could download CWM 3.0.0.8 for the Inc from and replace the recovery.img file in the RUU so that you're flashing the latest CWM instead of the stock recovery.
Similarly, you can grab your favorite radio version from this thread and replace the radio.img file. The one built into the RUU is 07.28, whereas 11.19 is the latest that works with our phones (even if it did come from the Evo). If you're not sure which radio works best for you, then I'd advise starting with the stock 07.28 radio, and seeing which works best for you over time. Different radio versions can have different effects for people depending on their location. For many, it can improve signal strength (and, correspondingly, battery life). For others it makes things worse.
Also, you can't flash S-ON on the Inc unless you're running the 07.28 radio.
What is different with the new hboot?

I'll be honest, I don't know. However, some ROMs require the latest HBOOT to work, so it's worth upgrading while you're resetting everything else.

No, that's not going to work quite the same way. I've never peeked into the OTA file to see what's inside, so I don't know what kind of results you'll get.
Thank you so much, that helped a lot! So I pulled the doug pm31img.zip, put the new clockwork recovery into a new pm31img.zip then copied the contents of Doug pm31img to the new pm31img with out the recovery.img. then re-zipped it, do I need to use no compression? (I used winrar to create the new pm31img.zip)
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Compression ratio doesn't matter -- I used max with 7-zip. Just make sure you use Deflate, not Deflate64 or any other advanced compression method.
And make sure it's name is PB31IMG.zip, not PM31IMG.zip.
Oh, and make sure your SD card is FAT32 formatted, not FAT16.

How did you root the device?

I used unrevoked but this is the first problem I've had with anything.
With the unrEVOked method it is best and easiest to download a pc36img.zip from the unrEVOked website. Then replace the splash1 file with the one you want to use. Place on root of sdcard then boot into recovery. It will scan sdcard then ask if you want to update the Pc36img.zip just volume up for yes then new splash screen will be flashed.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I think I may have found the problem. Some how I turned s-on. Installing unrevoked forever. That should work.
when I boot into bootloader and it scans the p36img it doesn't give me an option to update. It goes straight to options list.
Be sure that you have the file named correctly. It should be pc36img.zip a lot of times there is an extra .zip at the end. And also be sure you have the correct contents inside the folder. It should be named exactly as the one you are replacing. Leave all the other files inside the .zip as is. Just replace the splash1 file.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
still does not work. phone does not give me any opption to update .zip after scanning card. Never has. Even reinstalled the original pc36img.zip on zip. It scans but goes straight to the options list for fastboot, recovery, etc. My wifes evo does it to. They both have done it even when completely stock, before root.
And you are putting the .zip on the root of the sdcard right.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Yes and I've done everything. Renamed the .rgb565 img and put it in the .zip folder. The problem I think is the phone. I don't know why but none of the four evos I've worked on read the pc36img.zip. Why would this be. I've read some rooting tutorials that talked about rooting through the pc36img.zip file, but my phones have read and let me update. I don't get it!
Very weird. Don't know what else to suggest. I am at a loss.

Hi - I've got a rooted AMOLED Incredible.
Yesterday, it went into a bootloop. I could get to HBoot but could not get into recovery. I tried flashing multiple other recoveries but still could not get into it from HBoot (it would go into a bootloop every time I chose "Recovery" from HBoot).
Today, I installed an RUU from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11717873&postcount=2
It updated, and then when I rebooted, it went into the same bootloop, this time with the stock splash screen.
I have HBoot 0.92, Radio 7.28. I'm S-off. I've formatted my SD card, and it's FAT32.
Anyone have any idea what's going on?
Thanks in advance!

I can't get into recovery with bootlooping.
I'll try another SD card.
Basically at this point I'd be happy to get the phone to S-On so that I can take it back to Verizon. Unfortunately, I don't know how to do that as I can't access Recovery without going into a bootloop. I've tried to flash other recoveries and they all put me into a bootloop.
Anyone with any thoughts on how to get s-on without recovery?
Thanks!
I would say flash a bp31img through hboot. That should put you s-on i believe. If you cannot find a pb31img ill come back latter with a link for dl. The pb31img should put you completely stock. The image i have though is from the first shippments of 2.1 but its still stock.

Don't give up hope just now to S-ON. Have you read the below page for getting S-ON?

It should work with stock recovery as long as you're on one of the listed radios.
Get the unrevoked-forever-son.zip and follow instructions for unrevoked-forever.zip, renaming to update.zip
Quick question, I RUU'd back to Froyo so can he still receive the OTA with S-OFF? Or does it need to be S-ON?

It can be s-off but everything else must be stock, including recovery and having all original apps. Since its s-off rooting after the ota is no problem if desired.
So Ive been reading a bunch about rooting in an effort to grasp everything before actually going through with it. 2 things still have me slightly confused. RUU and PC36IMG.
As far as I can tell, these are both versions of the Stock 2.2 ROM that ships with the phone. These are necessary to help restore the phone in the event that something goes wrong during the Root process, or when flashing a custom ROM.
Am I on the right track??
Yep there both the same thing they brinv phone back to stock
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
A RUU is an update utility that you run from your PC that will install stock software and firmware on your phone, including the ROM, kernel, radios and hboot. A PC36IMG.zip can literally be almost anything. That is just the file name that hboot looks for, and can be a ROM, radio update, recovery, or just about anything. So all RUUs do the same thing but PC36IMGs can vary dramatically. So before flashing a PC36IMG, you need to know exactly what that particular file does/ is meant for.

Yes and no. A PC36IMG CAN bring it back to stock, but it can also be a recovery, radio, ect. That's why you need to know what the file is supposed to do, and if you're not sure, you need to look inside on a pc or not flash it at all.
So PC36IMG.zip is a file the phone looks for, and then, whatever it finds inside, it flashes to the phone.
What command, or action, forces the phone to look for PC36IMG.zip?

Correct. And no command needed, have the zip on your phone, boot into the bootloader, and it'll detect it in about 10 seconds, then you select yes to update and then to reboot to flash what is inside it.

Correct Though really no reason for it to be a rom/kernel since they're easily flashed in recovery, but it COULD be, so anytime anyone gives you a PC36IMG or you download it, check the contents of it first.
I downloaded Gingerbread 2.3.3 on my Rooted Evo 4G as per xHausx thread. Everything went well.
I am about to flash the Radio he has in his thread here >>

-I downloaded the file using my Evo and it is a ilivid.exe file.
- I renamed it PCM36IMG.zip in Root Explorer
I don't know if the above 2 steps I did are correct, which is why I am asking here.
Do I have to use my pc to achieve the Radio Flash, or can it all be done using my Evo.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I downloaded the Radio/WiMax combo but when I went into recovery and chose the .zip file, it said checking radio, but then I got the default bootloader screen again.
I clicked Reboot & Install after the download was complete and nothing. Just get the Rom Manager Home screen.
Will try later again after I figure this out.
Update:
I am in the process of flashing that zip and is in progress.
Will see what happens.
No luck.
I'm done for now. Don't know why I'm having so many issues as compared to flashing Gingerbread??
UPDATE!

Must be flashed through hBoot/Fastboot! Not Recovery.
PC36IMG - Radio, WiMAX and PRI Updates (MD5: 2E5C63EA59891A69F6D55C257CF165D5)
- I renamed it PC36IMG.zip using Root Explorer
- I moved PC36IMG.zip to the Root of the SD card using Root Explorer by selecting 'Move', then going to 'sd' then Pasting PC36IMG.zip there
- I used QuickBoot and entered HBoot and FastBoot mode
- PC36IMG.zip was recognized
- I pressed the 'Vol Up' key to acknowledge 'Yes' to continue with PC36IMG.zip (@jadden....Now I know what you meant by ''pressing vol up to start download )
- After Update was completed, I pressed vol up for Yes to Reboot
- Evo started up and I checked the Radio, etc. and SUCCESS!!
One of the issues I had before was that I didn't put the PC36IMG.zip into the Root of my sd card. This is why FastBoot didn't recognize the .zip
After much time spent with having issues, and after reading the help I got here, and Googling, the whole Process of FastBoot took 2 minutes!!
Thanks for everyone's input!
I still don't know why I couldn't use Rom Manager Recovery as suggested regarding the Radio files from Caulkins thread. I must have missed something. Maybe I should have used Recovery in Quick Boot I guess. But a moot point since I was able to use FastBoot regarding the link to the Radio in xHausx thread.............

Since the Official Gingerbread is also being made available tomorrow, and I asked that my replacement Evo Not be activated, it will probably be shipped with Froyo installed. Which would be just the way I like it..................

It is possible if you're s-off with Unrevoked Forever on Froyo. I had to switch to Amon Ra in order to install the update and then reflash Amon Ra after the update. Had to update Superuser after that but after that was fully rooted on the update.
There are several stock rooted versions of the OTA available, there's no reason that you need to lose root just to have the latest update.
If you are keen on losing root though, then go for it. You can install it with S-Off just fine, and since it'll remain S-Off you'll be able to flash a recovery on there and re-root by flashing a rooted rom.
If your intent is to have the latest update but also have root, then just flash one of the already-rooted stock roms available in the Android Development forum.
To hip kat, I actually don't like any custom roms, I'm an ogee only person and I tweak what I want or need myself. To tempe, how did you get clockwork off first assuming you had it? Also I used the unrevoked3 method but since mine is sprint, it automatically does a perm nand unlock.

Well, easiest is to just use Rom Manager to flash alternate recovery, that's what I did before running the OTA. After, you'll need to do it manually. If you search here on "recovery" you should find threads that have the pc36img.zip files for both Clockworkmod and Amon Ra. After installing the OTA, turn off the fastboot option under Settings/Applications. Copy the pc36img.zip file for the recovery you want to use to the SD card, shut down your phone and then hold volume down while turning it back on. Just follow the prompts on the screen from there. After the recovery is installed you should be able to boot up and have root. If the Superuser app give you FC's search around here for the fixed superuser zip and flash it.
You can go S-on with the Unrevoked S-On tool....
I don't want s-on hip, trying to keep s-off. And thanks tempe for your help.

According to the error you posted, it's just the blockbuster app that your missing. Did you uninstall other system apps? Or just that. You need to have all your system apps installed for it to work. I'll attatch the blockbuster app for you. You'll need to install it to /system/app using ADB or using Root Explorer. If adb, do this
adb remount
adb push Blockbuster_htc.apk /system/app
adb reboot
If using root explorer, just copy the apk to the /system/app folder and set the permissions the same as all the other apps in the system folder.
Also, it would be much easier for you just to flash a rooted stock rom. Here's a link for ya. You'd just flash the rom like normal, from within recovery. It'd save you some hassle.

As much as I would love to see that happen (for my own amusement), I do believe in bad karma and if you let someone do that knowing what they're about to get into then you're properly gonna get the bone too......who knows, your phone might just blow up on the way to work while you're playing angry birds or some crap...hahahaha
I've already chosen to just do the rooted ota but I'm trying to figure out if I need to flash the radio. The second link in the topic is showing 2.15.00.04.08 but mine is higher at 00.11.19. The combined link with pri and wimax is the one I don't know yet

I don't believe flashing the radio is necessary if you're doing the stock ota, I didn't have any issues with my current radio while I was using stock 2.3.3 (or any other ROM that I've used so far)
Alright I did the de-odex rooted ota but now the problem is once booted up, I cant update the prl or profile, it gives me an error. Im re-wiping the dalvik cache to see if that fixes it but is there any other steps I should try?
Side question, is a stock rom that came with the phone or an ota update a odex or de-odex?
Thanks for this thread, I have been searching high & low to see if S-Off would stay off or automatically turn back on. Thanks for the clarification!

I ended up testing myself to know for sure and S-Off will stay off if you do the OTA update. If you want to start rooting again, just download Amon_Ra Recovery, and Bam, flash any Rom you want! Thanks for the starting of the thread! Confirmed!
