I just got my Evo last Tuesday and last night finally built up the courage to root it. I used unrevoked 3.3 without any hassles then flashed Sprint lovers 12/31/10. I'm happy with it other than the battery life. I'm thinking of flashing another rom to see if that helps. However, I don't want to lose 4g. That's what brings me to my question about Amon_RA. I read the thread about the risks right now. In ROM Manager I get the option to install Amon_RA 1.8.0 and I'm not sure if that would be safe with hboot 2.10 or not. I did a backup with clockwork already and I'm wondering if that keeps my 4g keys or do I absolutely need Amon_RA to back them up.

Clockwork does not back up your RSA keys, but there is a thread somewhere around here on how to back them up manually from terminal emulator. I don't know much about Amon Ra.
I'm on my phone or I would like you to the thread.

Here is the thread to back up your RSA keys manually.
[UPDATE, INFO AND LINKS]*PLEASE READ* Concerns about Amon_Ra and Clockworkmod
As for your question about the Amon_RA. If you have a recovery installed that works.. I wouldn't change it unless you have to.
[ROOT] unrevoked3 v3.3 (with support for new HBOOT)
The Unrevoked 3.3 uses ClockworkMod 3.0.0.2 witch has options to back up WiMAX keys.
[ROM] Myn’s Warm TwoPointTwo - [RLS 4 - 11/25/2010] - Making Sense Of It All!
This is the ROM I use, but if you don't like sense go with CyanogenMod.
I hope this all helps
enjoy your evo
I'm definatley going to check out that rom. I'm a big fan of sense especially since it reminds me of my Fuze and makes the transition from winmo seem easier.
If I understand you correctly, the clockwork backup I did after rooting should've saved my rsa keys? I'm already starting on the manual way just to play it safe. Thanks for all the info, it's cleared up a lot of the confusion I had.
Sent from my HTC Evo 4G using XDA App
It depends on your version of Clockworkmod, but in my opinion, doing it manually is by far the safest way.

Well, I got my rsa key backed up manually and hopefully in the clockwork backup too. I think I'm pretty safe as far as that goes. Thanks guys.

Okay so I want to flash a rom preferably myn's warm 2.2 but someone told me I shouldn't because I used unrevoked. What do I do?
Swyped from my HTC EVO 4G via xda app
Don't see what the issue would be. I used the newest unrevoked to root and have flashed nearly every rom available, including myn's warm TwoPointTwo which I am currently running.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
If you're rooted with S-off and amon ra or clockwork recovery works, then you should be able to flash any rom. I flashed myn's warm 2.2 on a hw 004 with hboot 2.02 with no problems. All depends if you fully rooted your phone.
How can I tell if it's fully rooted? I have super user and a bunch of other apps that require root..and did I just answer my own question? Lol $ is off. I just need to know to do a nandroid backup so I can try flashing for the first time (I'm a little concerned)

Power off the phone. Start the phone holding volume down and power. You will be at the fastboot screen. At the top left look for it to say s-off or s-on. If it shows s-off then your fully nand unlocked. If it shows s-on then you will need to dig deeper. Depending on your hardware revision if it shows s-on then you may be able to use unrevoked forever.
If your s-off then use rom manager to flash amon-ra (highly recommended)..
Be sure to place any flashable zips on the root of the SD card so amon-ra will see them. And yes do a nand backup first.

Okay I ran into a problem, did a nandroid backup and can't find the folder in my sd card for it, what do I do?
Nandroid backups are found in your SD Card under the nandroid folder.
I found out that I was using clockwork(kinda sad that I didn't know this from the start) and it was in the clockmod folder now to take a risk and flash this rom.
I'm curious, who uses which and why?
*Amon. Oops
I personally use cw...but many people on this forum swear by amon bc they say it is more reliable... some roms require you to use amon to flash. ...I personally have never had issues flashing with cw...
Bottom line is that we have two good choices if you are a flashaholic

Amon-ra is my preference 0 errors. Clockwork is nice also, has its own app but people have reported a couple of flashing errors. Both are awesome all I can say is try out both see which one you like better.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I was kind of tempted with the features and GUI of Clockwork, but after reading a bit on here, it seems like Amon Ra is the reliable way to go. I'm new to Evo rooting and roms, but when I had my Nexus One, AR was absolutely the way to go. Rock freakin' solid.
Currently if you have a evo with hboot 2.02 or 2.10 the only recovery u can use after rooting is amon ra...just a fyi

Amon by far.
Amon_RA, since CWM doesn't work properly on newer hboots, and because CWM does not properly wipe partitions when you tell it to. Simple as that.

Im currently using CW...This is why I definitely want to use Ra... however when I flash it using rom manager, and then try any functions in Ra recovery is says "no zip files installed ".. any possible solutions??
I use Amon_ra because it backs up the wimax rsa keys. That's the only advantage I saw

The solution is to place your flashable .zip files to the base sdcard directory and not within a subfolder.

Like the person above said, Amon_RA 1.8.0 can only use ZIP files which are on the root of your SD card, not in a sub-folder. Version 2.0 (which Amon_RA has suggested will be coming soon-ish) will have folder navigation.
Amon Ra currently but I have used both. The reasons are clear it backs the RSA keys, and does clear when wiping.
Btw try #grep RSA /sdcard/nandroid/HT065HL*/(name of nandroid file)/wimax.img
You'll see where your RSA keys are stored in your nandroid.
I go back and forth.... I use amon ra for nandroid backups and serious flashes like radio pri nv all that jazz. I like clockwork for ease sometimes. I don't use app2sd. I use titanium to wipe davlik and repeat in either cw or amon ra just to be sure... They both have their good points. and bad

My wife got an evo like 3 months ago and I've been begging her to let me root it and play around. She finally said ok but wants to stay on stock rom bit remove bkoatware. So my question is I was gonna root with the universal one click but after reading the Instructions it flashes a custom rom (sprint lovers) at the end. What method can u use to root it with s-off but stay on the stock rom for now until I can find her an awesome rom she would like? That's all I want right now is full root with s off with custom recovery but on stock rom. Thank you in advance.

Unrevoked 3
Sprint lovers is pretty much stock. I believe he used Calk's exploit to make the 3G hotspot feature work but to tether 4G you need wireless tether.
To remove bloatware, use Titanium backup.
www.unrevoked.com. doesn't even lose any data. really a great tool.
if you want to learn a thing or two, use the link in my sig. careful, it wipes...
I rooted my Evo with newest unrevoked. It worked great and like already mentioned above you will not lose any data. With unrevoked you will have the stock rom. First thing to do is make a nandroid backup. Also I installed Amon Ra v2.3 because a lot of people haber better results with out over clockwork

btw the 'better results' you are talking of has nothing to do with overclock. amon-ra is a recovery, that works better (most agree) than clockworkmod. nothing to do with in the rom.

You may want to buy titanium back because you can freeze apps instead of removing them. The benefit is that if the app you remove odd needed for the system to run you can just unfreeze it and everything will be ok. Where as if you uninstall the app may be in a world of hurt. If the phone runs fine for a few day with the app frozen then you can uninstall the app.

Amon Ra does work better than clockwork for me. Seems to handle clearing the data and other system parts that are needed for flashing different roms.

Unrevoked includes Forever... flashing separately would just be redundant. Older versions of unrevoked didn't nand unlock, newer versions do.
I backed up my keys using ADB, but this was before I knew I could back them up in recovery. Using Amon Ra, go to the normal backup/restore screen, uncheck the first three things with the power button, then check only the wimax option. Then do your backup. You will, of course, want to back up the rom as well. I'd just suggest doing them separately so you can keep your wimax backup in multiple places without taking up a ton of space.

unrevoked automatically runs unrevoked forever. to backup rsa keys, just make a nand backup and be sure to include wimax partition in the backup.

myns is convincing, if just for the looks. very nice rom for beginners. also mikfroyo maybe. or just go right for it with cm7 or miui (lawlz).
for sense kernels, netarchy's or ziggys (on his website ziggy471.com)
Yeah she loves sense and I keep telling her there are some custom roms that have sense overlay but I do like myns warm rom. Looks awesome. Ill just get a custom kernel for now and overclock it. Also I haven't flashed amon ra yet. I still have cwm 3.0.0.5 flashed. Is there anyway to backup the keys seperately in cwm or not. I did a nand backup already. I know u said in amon ra you can backup the keys seperately. If I can't on cwm ill just flash amon ra then. That ls guys.

If you want to install Amon Ra then go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026 for the Evo. I choose to use the the Bootloader way. Just remember that any backup you do with Clockwork can not be used with Amon Ra to restore and vise versa. Also ALWAYS ALWAYS keep a backup copy of your nandroid backups somewhere other than the SD card. I have personally been saved by doing this because for some unknown reason my nandroid folder went MIA one day from the SD Card but I had copies on my computer.
I just rooted my daughters evo yesterday with unrevoked and lost nothing and had a clean root. I also rooted mine and my wifes evo with unrevoked and flawless. unrevoked ftw!

Great advise with the backups! Gonna do that now.
This may be over kill but everytime I do a nandroid backup, with Amon-RA I always select to include the wimax RSA keys. You can just have one, but It is better to have and not need than it is to need and not have.
OK.
I need some serious help!
I have an EVO that I rooted with UNREVOKED about a month ago
This afternoon, I tried to flash to the new Synergy Rom with the cool Sense UI, BUT!! Dumb me, who was up working all night long was not reading correctly and flashed the INCREDIBLE ROM.
Yeah Yeah I know, dumb thing
I obviously got an error and then tried to restore my Nandroid backups that I had previously made.
These caused errors too..which they never had before.
I pulled the battery and then couldn't even get into clockwork mod.
I was thankfully able to flash Clockwork MOD to at least be able to get into a recovery screen.
I did so, and flashed my Myn 2.2 ROM which thankfully installed.
Tonight, I went back to try to flash the ROM that I had originally wanted to flash and the flash was complete.
HOWEVER, when I rebooted, it just kept going to the white HTC screen, hanging and then rebooting to the white HTC screen over and over.
I tried to start all over but doing a data wipe/factory restore and to wipe the Dalvik Cache..
When I did this, I got an error:
E:Can't mount/dev/block/mmcb1k0p2
File exists.
I was able to get back to my Myn 2.2 but things like Google navigator don't work,
I hope I have explained this well enough for you guys to understand.
If there is anyone out there that can help me, I would appreciate it!!!
Thanks
Mike
You did not brick your device.
Try this out and tell me it works.
Download EVO version of your preferred Rom. Place on SD card.
Search for amon ra supersonic.
Go to the xda link once you search for it.
Download the PC36IMG.zip version of amon ra.
Place on sdcard, but not in any folders.
Make sure the file name is "PC36IMG.zip", it is case sensitive.
Turn off phone.
Reboot into hboot, by holding the volume DOWN key and power button.
Let the hboot find the PC36IMG image.
When it asks whether you want to update/flash...say yes.
It will unload the recovery image into your phone.
It will ask you if you want to reboot, say no.
Then, go to where it says recovery and click to boot into recovery.
Now you should be using amon ra v2.3.3 supersonic.
Go to wipe and wipe everything, factory reset, data, ext, android secure, everything!
If you feel frisky, wipe again!
Now, proceed to flash from zip.
Choose the Rom you downloaded in step one.
That should do the trick. Also...clockwork mod nandroid backups will not work with amon ra backups, and vice versa. Keep this in mind.

Well, when I first purchased my Evo I used clockwork mod for about a day. It caused me issues, personally, which could also be attributed to my lack of knowledge at the time. So I tried amon ra and have always been happy. My issue with cwm was that it did wipe correctly.

I have read that it is possible that you can lose your 4G keys with AMON RA. That makes me nervous...is there anyway to avoid this?
No one can guarantee that you won't lose your WiMax keys with either recovery. I have never used Clockwork on my EVO, but my keys are intact with AMON RA, and it is easy to back them up with AMON RA.
Thank you so much!!!
I have company in town and not a lot of time to play...so it is SAFE to wipe everything?
Is there anything that I shouldn't be wiping?
Android security? What is that? And is it Safe? I am just a bit nervous...but THANK YOU for your help!
Don't wipe your SD card. Yes, wipe android secure.
Android secure is a directory used by Google apps2sd, capable on froyo and above. It is where Google stores your apps once you move them to SD card. You can wipe it.
