Battery Usage Question - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I'm running the latest MikFroyo (4.2), Netarchy's 4.2.2 Less HAVS and the corresponding SBC kernel, and running SetCPU (set at 384/128 conservative with the screen off). When I have the screen off and the phone is idle, I'm seeing an unusually high drop in battery. Last night (12-8) my phone dropped 12%. While looking at what was using the battery up, Cell Standby and Phone Idle were using the most battery (46% and 40% respectively), Android System had used 2%, and screen had used 1%. I checked Spare Parts and I don't have any wake lock issues that I'm aware of... I checked and, according to the battery use details for Cell Standby, the phone was only without a signal 19% of the time.
Is this normal or is there something I should check out? I've never had battery drop like that overnight. I'm seeing an unusually high drop in battery even with the phone idling with the screen off.

[Q] Screen use eating battery alive

UPDATE: DUUUURRRR. I should've looked more. I did the "Miagi" method listed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884684
and then read up on the screen always using 80-ish % of the battery. I guess I wasn't fully charged when I flashed Midnight. Now losing about 2% an hour with light usage.
Woot!
thanks xda folk
Hi all,
I just got done doing my first battery conditioning. Ran it down completely last night at 9:30PM. Charged it with the power off until 8AM this morning.
Since 8AM phone has gone down 11%.
I don't have many apps installed, 4G is off (no coverage in my place), and have hardly used the phone this morning (a little Google Reader and Gmail browsing).
Auto display brightness and power save on.
I'm running Midnight ROM 5.1 with journaling clocked at 200-1200 Mhz and conservative governor.
That out of the way, here's the real problem: Battery use shows 88% screen use! I've had the screen on for less than ten minutes, isn't this out of whack for having that much battery dead?

The battery use section of the settings is messed up in our Froyo. Display always shows greater the 80%, but that's not really the truth.
Sent from my always stock, EC05 Epic 4G
It's a relative statistic, the screen used 88% of the 11% drained. The screen was on so logically it would use power, the thing to worry about is when something like the gallery app is using 88% of the battery.

Is this good Battery Life?

So I've just recently rooted my Incredible (about 4 months now) and I bought a 3500 mAh battery off ebay for about 12 dollars around the same time. I used to get really great battery life with it. About 2 full days without having to charge. I'm not sure if the battery's getting worse or if this is normal battery depletion for all you other Incredible users.
I'm running CM7 nightly 258, the latest one, and have the newest Incredikernel, just flashed the kernel about a week ago. I'm still pretty new to the rooting game. Before I flashed the kernel I just had the normal kernel for CM7. I was getting about 10 hours of battery before and tried the battery calibration, but I think I did it wrong and got maybe 8 after that.
So I tried running the Incredikernel and was getting between 12-20 hours of battery life after that. My usage is at least 2 hours of Pandora a day using 3g, sometimes 3-4 hours. Moderate to high internet usage, rarely make calls, and moderate texting. I'll sometimes play some games, but that probably equals about half an hour's worth per charge, an hour at most. I'm also running juice defender, too.
With the new kernel I have the smartassv2 governor and have my processor speed between .128-1.113ghz. I think I did the battery calibration the correct way this time. I bumped charged it until it was completely charged. Then let it completely drain till it shut off yesterday. It lasted about 24 hours with the normal usage I have stated above. I then turned it on 2 more times to make sure the battery was completely drained. I took out the battery for a couple minutes and then put it back in. Then I let it charge off until the light turned green. I then booted into recovery and cleared battery stats. Rebooted the phone until it was completely started and then unplugged the phone.
I let the battery drain completely again and it lasted another 24 hours with the same usage I have stated above and I'm now charging again. I turned it back on while it's still charging though.
Is this normal battery life compared to you guys. Remember I have the 3500 mAh battery, but it was off ebay (stated new though). If you could also post you're battery usage and how long your battery lasts, as well. Also any other important info like, kernel, ROM used, CPU speed, etc. I'd like to compare to see how everyone else is doing. Thanks again.
I'm on CM7 right now with the latest Incredikernel. I use the Incredicontrol app to undervolt and set my frequencies from 128-921 Mhz. I have a standard battery and with light usage I get a day and half off a single charge, moderate/heavy usage it'll range from 12-20 hours.
You use any powersaving apps like Juicedefender? Also what do you classify as moderate/heavy usage? What battery governor do you use? Did you do a battery calibration?

I don't use Juicedefender or any power saving app like that. Moderate/Heavy use I mean texting all day making calls, on the internet, playing various games. Don't get me wrong there have been times that I kill my battery in less than 10 hours, but that's when I'm on my phone non stop or on Netflix. For a governor I use smartass, not smartassv2. I did calibrate my battery once, last year when I got the phone. To me what makes the biggest difference is undervolting with the Incredicontrol app. And the phone runs much cooler.
I might try undervolting to see how long that lasts. 1.113 ghz might be overkill, but I have noticed a performance increase. The majority of what kills my battery is the display though when I check out my battery stats. It's always at around 60%. I have the amoLED screen as well.

I always dim my screen as well. If its on the highest setting it'll kill a lot of your battery quick. I used to have my phone over clocked to 1.113 GHZ but after testing different things out I noticed if I lowered it under 1 GHZ there was not much of a diff. For undervolting I dropped the number by 25 at a time until I noticed the phone lagging. hope this info helps.
I have my screen on auto brightness. It's usually at a low bright setting unless I'm outside. I'll try out undervolting, too. I have noticed the phone does run a little bit snappier with the 1.113 ghz though, but I can live with it being a little less if it means better battery life.
I don't know if it's my battery or not though, but everytime I unplug it, it's been going right back down to like 89% within minutes. I understand that you can't fully charge the Li-ion batteries all the way, but I don't know if I'm fully utilizing the battery to it's full potential since it is 3500 mAh.
I might go back to my standard battery and see how it compares. Although I do like the feel of having the extra thickness with the bigger battery.

Charge it while its off or get an external charger. That's the only way to get a true 100% charge from a phone battery.
-My life is a shooting range, people never change-
Yeah, I have been bump charging as of lately(about a month), but I hear it decreases the life of the battery so I've been holding off on doing that.
With my latest charge, I've gotten 1d 14h 49m 20s, with moderate usage which I think is pretty impressive. It's still at 5% and I'm going to let it completely discharge and then charge it off again until the light turns green.
Edit: It lasted me right around 40 hours all together. It shut off so I decided to turn it back on and see how long it would last again. It was at 2% when I turned it back on and I got another half hour out of it which led me to the 40 hours. Do you think that's good battery life with a 3500 mAh battery?

Battery Automatically Recharges without Plug in

Has anyone experienced this. I used my phone heavily for about 1.5 hours at which point it said that I had about 50% battery left. i then left it untouched and unplugged for about 8 hours overnight and when i picked it up int he morning it was at around 50% still and the battery details showed this. seems like after i stopped using it, the battery started charging rather than discharging until I picked it up again.
I'm on stock with an extended battery.
I'm not complaining, just trying to see whats going on.
I've seen this happen as well when going from heavy use to no use over night or when put in airplane mode.
should ask in the Q and A forum....not development....
not only is it the wrong forum...but you will get more answer
The reason for this is due to how the phone displays battery usage statistics. You phone will periodically check the phone usage and determine battery life based on your current usage amount. So if you talk on your phone for an hour straight, during the time your phone will figure how much battery you have left based on that usage. If you then don't use it for 8 hours, your battery level indicated by the phone can actually go up, or stay the same for a very long period of time. Thats why your battery will drop very fast when you start to use it when it has not been used for a while.
It looks like the SOC (state of charge) algorithm is using the derivative of current (consumption over time) in conjunction with the open circuit voltage, yet taking little regard to cell temperature.
As current consumption is decreased, the cell temperature will eventually decrease and the open circuit voltage will slightly increase. This is where the SOC difference comes from.
This is a common problem with any SOC algorithm that doesn't precisely factor in the cell temperature. With these lithium cells being as small as they are (compared to what's used in Automotive applications) trying to characterize the cell temperature characteristics would be like nailing jello to the wall.

My thoughts are right along these lines. The phone is projecting your remaining battery life based on previous usage. It is forcasting what your usage will be and with no usage over a certain time period it is reporting negative numbers which send your patterns in a different direction.
Definitely feels temp related. I used mine heavily in a real bad signal area (Restaurant with a tin ceiling...) and it got really hot. I noticed battery life down to 48%. Put it near a fan to cool off and 5 minutes later it was at 65%.
Not positive on specifics, but it has to do with voltage fluctuating.

[Q] What causes instant battery drop greater than 30%?

I've been searching but haven't found what I need.
Yesterday I was playing a game and my phone froze so I did a hard reboot. I was at 77% before the reboot. After the phone turned back on I was all the way down to 41%. During this time my phone was running very hot. In fact it ran hot all day at work and wouldn't charge. After the first battery pull, the battery dropped I did a third battery pull and things turned back to normal.
I'm running Blend 7.1 with the FD02 kernel and FD19 Modem. Going to update my kernel tomorrow. I just switched back from AOSP. This has happened to me in the past as well.
Our phone anticipates battery drain. I've had the reboot battery drop, but despite the lower percentage, the battery drains slowly and increases during sleep.
You're not actually losing battery capacity; the OS is anticipating quicker loss and reflects as much with a lower percentage

Awesome. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't something that I had done wrong.

Another battery thread

Running CM10 Wild into the Night.
If I let the phone sit without touching it, I get an average drain rate of about 10% per hour, lasting me about 10 hours on a full charge. However, the battery decides to have a field day as soon as I perform the occasional texting and web browsing.
As shown by the screenshot, culprit is the screen. However I have the brightness set way down (about 1/4 from the bottom) and the phone goes to deep sleep 70-80%. According to Gsam battery monitor, the screen uses about 60% of battery with only around 52min of on-time during the 5 hours that a full charge lasted.
Something is definitely up. When I was running stock Touchwiz, AndroidOS used to be the battery hogger. But now the screen has taken over the crown on CM10.
Screen will always use the most unless you neve use the phone. How old is your battery? Does it spin?

That sounds like you need a new battery. 52 minutes is no
Where near long enough
. or possibly with the screen on some app is running the CPU full speed
use CPU spy and leave the screen on indefinitely after unplugging it from the charger at full battery, and see if the highest CPU state is being used for the entire screen on time after you unplug it.
