Any way to get WiFi Tethering working? Tried Barnacle Tether on Two Different 2.1 ROMs and 6.1 CyanogenMod and none of them could get WiFi Tethering to work..
Rooted myTouch 3G Slide Running on CyanoGinger cannot get it running. Anyone else have this issue?
i use this on my slide with cm6.1 and it actually works (barnacle doesn't work all the time for me)
i can't post links, so: code[dot]google[dot]com[slash]p[slash]android-wifi-tether
I could never get a wifi tether to work with 2.1 stock roms, any sense rom really, but I flashed cyanogenmod 6.1.1, and both barnacle and the wifi tether than the previous reply had work fine. I suggest using the one that was posted in the last reply, here's the link, since I can post links http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
Download the top one, 2_0_5
Hi, I've downloaded this one, and 2.0.6 now, and still having trouble with getting WEP or WPA encryption working on these.
Tethering works fine, but the connection is unencrypted, and I'm relying on access control to keep people away... would prefer encryption.
Has anyone else had this issue?

I've never used encryption, might be a bug. I suggest not using it, and instead enabling the built in access control feature. Press menu and then access control should be there. You might have to go to menu>settings and enable access control there first though. Then, when you go to access control, anyone that connects will show up in the list with a checkbox next to them. If unchecked, they have no access to the internet. If they are checked, then they can access the internet.

I just installed 2.0.6 on my Slide w/CM6.1 and no problems here. Been working great! What error are you getting or is it just grayed out?

this has been an ongoing problem coming from 2.1 and still exists in 2.2.
i tried different versions of wireless tether 2.02 and 2.05 pre1, pre2, pre5 and now pre7. they all have the same problem where i connect and everything works great, then after 10 minutes, the connection drops on the laptop. on the phone it still says connected but with 0KB. (even if theres nothing connected, it should show 0.1 to 0.4kb) i will then have to disconnect tether from my phone, then turn it on again, it'll work for another 10 minutes before the connection drops again. i tried wiping the phone and it didnt help. i upgraded to froyo yesterday, tried wireless tether on 2.05 pre7 and the same problem exist.
does anyone have this issue?
Wrong Forum.
Questions belong in the Q&A Forum.
sorry, mods, please move. thanks!
Moved to Q&A.
I have the exact same issue. I thought I was the only one. I don't recall it being a problem prior the to OTA (1.47) update.
The only way I've found to have stable wifi tether at this point is to use cyanogen's rom. The built in Froyo tether is very stable and doesn't have this dropout issue. But I would prefer to use stock with Sense UI.
it was a problem for me since day 1. was hoping the issue would go away after the 1.47 update but no. i would also like to keep it as stock as possible with sense. if anyone can come up with a solution or fix. it would make me really happy
It is very annoying. I've tried:
-enabling Access Control
-Adding a WPA2 password
-Using both of the above
-Changing the SSID
-Changing the Channel
-Changing the LAN settings
-Updating to pre3 and then pre4.
-Wiping and Clearing Cache and Installing only Wifi Tether
-Numerous ROMS (Stock Eclair, Fresh 1.0.1, Damages 3.2.3, Stock Froyo + netarchy's kernel)
The only thing I haven't tried yet is pre6/7. I will give them a try tonight, but I don't have much faith that they will fix the issue.
i've done the same as you. im on pre7 now and it didnt fix the issue. =(
I have this problem only with Android 2.2 roms. I have tried Android Wireless Tether 2.0.5 pre4, pre6, and pre7 with the stock kernel and with netarchy's 3.7.6c kernel. I have tried on the rooted odexed final 3.26.651.6 posted by netarchy, Fresh 3.1.0.1, Ava's 3.0, and Baked Snack 1.1. The settings I use don't seem to matter (various SSIDs, encryption on/off, access control on/off). I can't stay connected longer than 10 minutes, but sometimes I am only connected for a minute or less. Also, after a disconnect it takes several tries to reconnect.
Might be good to start an issue for the developer's on their site by going here:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/entry
Android Wireless Tether 2.0.2 (theory of evolution) works fine for me on various Android 2.1 roms and I stay connected for hours at a time.
What happens when you change the power mode to always on? Its under advanced settings. The default is to disable after 10min of inactivity.
Maybe you guys tried this. I didn't see it mentioned.

where is this setting? is it a setting in the wireless tether? i dont see it. only the disable wake lock. which is checked.
I'm sorry I thought you were talking about sprints app.
Maybe that setting applies to the wireless tether app too?
Worth a try anyways. It's under settings>wireless>Sprint hotspot settings>menu-advanced>power settings.

I wish my disconnects were only every 10 or 15 minutes. Unfortunately I am lucky to stay connected for 3 minutes at a time. When I get disconnected, the phone stops broadcasting its SSID and I have to stop and restart tethering to get connected again. I finally added an issue to the google project site here:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=488&start=200
I think I found a very simple solution to this problem. I didn't think I had this problem, but I found out that I did once I tried to download over 12GBs of different operating systems for one of my classes. As you could imagine it was getting very frusterating having the disconects. The solution I have has had an active download for almost an hour now.
The solution? Turn on the wifi radio before tethering.
I wanted to kick myself in the nuts for not thinking of it sooner. Anyway, if you're having this issue give it a try and post your results.
Edit: So it seems a notification from Bloo killed the connection....I'm not sure what's up with that. I noticed when I sent a txt msg it interruped the connection briefly, but it started right back up. Any thoughts, comments, concerns?

You want this unchecked... wake-lock keeps your phone awake.
I read that changing the channel from 6 to 1 or 11 or just another channel may make it work. Good luck!
I'm using fresh rom 3.1.0.2 and the wireless tether version built in is 2.0.5 pre8 and I was wondering if there was a way tether my wifi connection. Is there another app that will do this? Everytime I turn on wifi and enable wireless tether it turns off wifi and I see my 3G connection turn on. This is my first time using wireless tether and it seems like from what I read that this is the norm. Does anyone know a way to make wifi priority over 3G or 4G? TIA.
I had Wireless Tether 2.0.5 and 2.0.6 working without issue. I updated to 2.0.7 via market update and now it will not work. My laptop see's the network but will not gain internet access. I also noticed that while upload keeps going, download gets stuck at .4kB total.
I have tried on my computer using Windows 7 ultimate 64, ubuntu 10.10 x64, and PS3. All 3 see the network but cannot gain internet access. I also tried version of Wireless Tehter ranging from 2.0.5 stable to 2.0.8 experimental. All versions act the same.
Any ideas why im having issues, looking in the apps log it appears everything is fine.
Ive tried it open network and secured as well as access control on/off. none of the settings seem to effect this. Thanks.
Edit: the only change ive made since it last worked that i can think may have affected this was updating kernel from my sig to 4.3.4

Well, I would try one of two things, or just both. You said it started right after you updated the wireless tether app? I would try rolling back to the last version that was working. You can go to menu>settings>applications>manage applications> then find the wireless tether app. Once you select it, there should be a button that says 'uninstall updates'. Hit that, and it will revert youb ack to the last version. Also, you noted that you also changed kernels. I have had certain kernels break my ability to tether for some reason or another. No idea why. You could also try going to the previous kernel you were on.
Unfortunately I don't the rollback is an option tho ill look into it. As for the kernel I'm beginning to think maybe that was the culprit but ill have to wait til tomorrow to change back.

As previously stated, you may have to change the kernel, because not all are compatible with it. And also when connecting, it can take 1-3 minutes before can "connect" with data when using the wireless tether/hotspot.
Found a solution to my problem here.

Seems since upgrading to cm7, I hafta run wireless tether twice to get it to work...the first time I run it I get the limited or no connectivity on XP, but if I stop then restart tethering it works fine from there.
Has anyone else seen this and if so is there a way to fix it?
same problem here. never works the first time, always works the second time.
but the built in tether app never works and i would like a fix for that as well so i can access it from the toggle menu.
Built in tether app seems to work for me, but I prefer wireless tether for the data counter and access control...
Anyone ever figure this out? I saw a few ppl mention it in the nightlies discussion but didn't see a solution...
Up top again...
My wife's just got a tablet so wants to get it connected via her Wildfire.
We tried turning it on last night but it's not working properly - the hotspot functionality itself seems be enabled properly, but in Wireless and Networks, the text under the 'Mobile network' option keeps cycling between 'Connected' and 'Use phone for data connection...'.
The text 'Wi-Fi hotspot active' keeps appearing and disappearing from the notification area.
We appear to be able to successfully connect the tablet via wifi to the Wildfire but there's no internet access.
The handset is completely stock and unbranded (Froyo, build 2.22.405.1). Internet access in general is fine and my wife's data plan specifically allows tethering (GiffGaff UK, using a Gigabag).
Has anyone else encountered this issue and found a way around this? Am willing to start rooting and flashing other ROMs if it will solve the problem.
for tethering try the Barnacle wifi tethter app from market - works for me
I'll give that a try when I get home and report back here.
Have you ever tried it using the in-built functionality and either found it to work or not? Considering I've not had problems with my own handsets (previously a Desire, now a Sensation) it seems odd that I can't get it to work on my wife's Wildfire.
I used the built in one on stock rom with no problems at all on 2 wildfires, I used to use all mine then leech from the girlfriends. Could it be a problem with her apn setting? Maybe call customer service and check its set correctly for tethering.
Personally I'd tell her its broke though and flash it like I did the girlfriends purely because I'm a flashaholic!!

Just in case anyone was wondering (or for the benefit of future searchers)... I finally got the Hotspot working after I installed a custom ROM (DK Custom Froyo v4.7 - I didn't want anything too different to Stock).
Custom kernels etc. didn't work (in fact, the one I tried destabilised the handset), neither did other options such as Barnacle on the stock ROM.
Thanks everyone for trying.
Im making another thread in the Development section since people with the Nexus S dont care to even try to help with the Nexus S 4G people..
Short and simple is there any Jellybean ROM for the NS4G that has 4G Tethering working?
Please Thank "cloud9utk" for finding this! Post #18
Code:
ok, so i have a NS4G running CM 10.1.2-crespo4G. i run the matrix kernel v25-CM and have gapps.20130812 installed.
i was able to get 4G tethering running with Wifi Tether v3.4experimental1
here are my settings:
Profile: Google Nexus S 4G
Method: Netd-Ndc (master)
"Max Client" - unchecked
"No-tether" - checked
No encryption
Default SSID on default channel (set to 01)
wifi reload 1 - unchecked
wifi reload 2 - checked
all other settings default. you can enable access control and just allow your own devices.
works in 4G just fine.
oddities: when i analyze the wifi signals, all other modes go through without errors on the log, but the wifi never shows up in the Wifi Analyzer graph. but with these settings it shows up, but at channel 06. curious, but it works.
i haven't tried to change the ssid, because "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" but i'm confident that won't mess it up.
cheers everyone! thanks for all the help! glad i could finally give something back!
PS: it works best when sprint isn't mucking around with their WIMAX network... also, i am on voyager mobile, not Sprint, but it is a sprint mvno. so $50/month unlimited tethering data. hmm..
In 4.1.2 most if not all rooms should be easy to tether off of with the standard wifi tether app I don't have the link handy but it's the common xda-developers one.
For 4.2.1/2 Google changed how tethering works... The only app I found that works is in the market for $. 99...It's called wifi tether router.. It eats most of the ram while running so one app like a music player or texting can be run at the same time but expect to reboot if you disable the tether and want to re-enable it... Also it bugs sometimes and has to be reinstalled... Wpa2 appears to work the best... I use it with slim bean 4.2.2 and it runs on wimax just fine. It does drain the battery at close to 1 percent per minute and beats out the charger in drain just be aware.

I could not get WIFI Tether to work with anything after 4.1.1 and the only way to get it to work was to go back to stock 4.1.1. What custom JB roms work with WIFI Tether?
What settings are you using with WiFi Tether? I too have not had any luck in getting it to work with a Jellybean Rom.

This is the only one that works for me currently wpa2 works fine

You were right. I was on 4.1.1 at the time and tethering 4g with no problems. I am going to try the link posted above and see if it works but WiMax is used so little now that tethering 4g might make me stay on 4.1.1 stock. I can customize the extended power menu and battery icons with Xposed mod so it may be OK if the above link doesn't work. I am trying them all on SlimROM 4.2.2 now
This worked for me...

Yeah I've tried to get Wifi Tether working on 4.2 roms but unsuccessful so went back to stock rooted 4.1.1, as it's the only thing that would work with Wifi Tether. This thread is about trying to get tether to work on a 4.2 or 4.3 rom.

Same here. I tried at least six different 4.1.2 or 4.2.2 ROMs and as soon as I activate a tether it errors out. I switched from the odexed stock 4.1.1 to OMJ's deodexed stock 4.1.1 so I can add in inverted gapps and re-odex. I don't know why data is not reconnecting once i turn on any tether app on 4.2.2 but I did get it to work twice which is driving me nuts
Well, on 4.1.1 I can tether on 4g and as soon as I posted my last post, I got the native 3g tether working on one of the newer CM builds... CM10.1.3 RC1 but only 3g as of now
Thanks for all the replies guys, I finally got internet in my house so im going to try and download a couple roms and give it a test for my self.. The only reason i wasnt doing it before was because i was terthering internet from my phone which was my main source of internet and it would have taken 2 hours just to download 1 rom

I just finished setting up my HTC One so I will go ahead and try and find a few newer 4.2.2,ROMs and try them. I already downloaded last night's CM nightly so we'll see. I mean it has worked before but I got frustrated toggling it 20 times to get it to lock.
Although I did add all of the 4.2.2 gapps to my 4.1.1 and I am fairly certain that it's all current...but what the hell, I have time today

Awesome, btw i was testing out Hellybean 4.2.2 because someone said they had tethering working in that (Seems to only be 3G Tethering tho)
But after flashing Hellybean 4.2.2, Native 3G Tethering works like a charm
After flashing gApps on top of that native 3G Tethering STOPPED working.(as in i can connect but no data gets sent to my computer)
Ive tried to replicate the problem 3 times so far and each time the same things happens so i believe i just linked the flashing of gApps to our tethering problem, at least the native tethering
