[Q] Custom Kernel vs apps lock? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I rooted my Desire & using miui rom now.
I have "apps protecting" apps which avoid my friends / whoever from reading my sms etc.
However, after flashing a custom kernel, it does not work anymore.
I have tried many different kernel but still none of them work. (It seems to be only working on the stock htc / miui kernel?)
Any idea please? Thank you.

[Q] How to make the most out the official GB

Hi all,
I can't help it, but I just prefer the HTC roms above the custom ones.
For me there are two downfalls in the use of the official HTC GB.
1- the missing of Sense 2.1
2- individual stock apps aren't updated to there latest versions. (gallery, internet etc.)
The whole memory issue I will leave out of this discussion for now.
I will probably try to root my desire with the new tool from Revolutionary any time soon. After that I will try to fix the two issues.
Where can I find, and how do I install the latest versions of the stock apps. Dose anyone keeps a database of some sort of these updates stock apps? Can I install these on the current sense 2.0 or do I have to have 2.1 for this?
I tried to dissect a sense rom, but it's just not working out. I don't know which apk's are what.
Several threads speak of removing certain apps, but I can't seem to find much about updating the apk's.
Tnx a lot!

[Q] 2g network is not working on many stock based roms

I've tried many different roms, one of my favourite is light orange, a fast yet stable stock based rom. However, recently I have a 2g contract (before this I only use wifi for networking), sadly I found that even I turn on (using toggle / directly from the setting) the data (with / without the use 2g only option) I can't really connect to the network.
Later I tried several other roms including Adrenalineā„¢ ROM (stock based), XperiaTized (should be stock based?), but the network was still not working (though other things such as call / sms worked flawlessly).
Meanwhile, CM based rom such as DebianDroid, CyanogenMod 7.2.0 RC1 Miracle Edition ( which is currently being used ) and even XperiaICS ( CM9 based ) work painlessly with the 2g network.
I want to know if my location (Hong Kong, China, Asia) matters for the 2g network problem. I really want to use stock based rom for lightweight, better battery and stability. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance
P.S. I factory reset and wipe cache, etc before flashing roms. But I don't think the way I flash rom matters because the CM based roms have no problems.

Due to some typo, I should clarify that 2g is NOT working on light orange either.
Now I switch to Enchanced236. The 2g data works finely but I don't know why the phone keeps rebooting after I restored apps using Go Backup
It's maybe because of deodexing problems. I don't know why there problems come up after deodexing, but have you had these issues with the ROM being Odexed?

Sorry but I don't know what you mean. Do you mean
1. roms that are originally odexed; OR
2. I have to odex the roms myself( is it possible ? )
If 1 is what you mean, it seems that most of the newly released custom roms are deodoxed, including CM7 I guess, so I should I find some old roms to test it? But with Enhanced236 ( deodexed ) I can have data, don't know why
If 2 is what you mean, how to do this?
Sorry I'm a newbie

Hmmmm
(Only Custom ROMs that are based on Stock might have these problems)
Well if the Custom ROM is poorly deodexed (not sure how) then the OP, has to re-deodex the ROM from scratch (Stock) and hopefully do it right this time. Then the OP adds the mods & tweaks.
If you go with #2, I think you'll still get the 2G problem :-\

So do you mean that if the custom ROMs are really poorly deodexed (which cause the 2g problem), I have nothing to do except (maybe) tell the ROM maker to fix it

Yeah, I guess so...
But it could be other problems. Not just deodexing
(But for me, it's most likely to be because of that. Because Stock ROMs are supposed to be stable. So if an issue like yours pops up, then I blame it on the deodexing process)

Maybe some of the restored apps or data are incompatible with something in the ROM. AFAIK, app restoring also keeps application data and some settings, not only apks.

I will try again to see if there are apps/data that cause the reboot problem. Your ROM is a smooth one that I like very much:good:
--added below--
I tried again and restored only necessary apps and data, now enhanced236 works like a charm!! Thanks so much again for such a great ROM!

[Q] stock + custom firmware dualboot

Hello everyone!
I am planing to root my htc desire hd cause i've read lots of stunning stuff you can do when your phone is rooted.
like using the newest version of android, installing google now and so on..
But my question is, is it possible to stay with my stock firmware (and if possible stock kernel?) somehow
and use one or more custom firmwares with programs like boot manager to find one for daily use?
and what are the disadvantages of using a custom kernel? cause i've read the following, looking through your forums:
In the present case,It is hard to say which kernel is good .All unofficial kernel have the same headphone button issue, and only 5 sensors(DHD have 7 sensors).

If you use AAHK (no idea about HTCDEV method) you can simply do a full image backup of your stock firmware, including your kernel (this is called a nandroid backup), after you've rooted but before you flash a custom ROM. Then, wipe and flash custom firmwares to your heart's content. If you ever want stock back, just restore that backup. I'm not aware of a dual boot manager, though.
Usually, the kernel that came with the firmware (aka ROM) is the best kernel. Devs will post about alternate kernels that are compatible with their ROMs. (Note that if you're planning to use the latest version of Android, Jelly Bean, there is a compatible alternate kernel.)
No idea about those sensors.

Yes u can boot multiple roms using boot manager i hv seen it work but i hvnt been able to do it myself or u can say i was less intrested to pay attention. But the answer is yes u can. Head on to the boot manager in play store it gives u all the info u need to get u phone run two or more roms at the same time.
P.S: Speaking of which i think i might give it another go again but this time with interest.

[Q] Help with custom Kernel

Hi Everyone,
I'm fairly new to Android and have been getting used to installing ROMS through CWM etc recently but there is one thing i really don't understand and need some help with
I have a One X locked to 3 (REALLY wish I didn't get my phone with 3) so that means i'm stuck on hboot 1.12.
I've done some research etc and found the tripndroid kernel which allows any hboot to use a sense jellybean ROM and with my limited knowledge i'm not too sure what i have to do to install this kernel.
So my main Questions are:
1. How i would go about installing this kernel with a Jellybean ROM on my phone?
2. What is the best ROM to use?
3. Is it worth it?
Many Thanks in advance to anyone who helps me out here! (sucks being a noob )

[Q] New adventurer in Custom ROMs

Hello All!
I just want to clear some of my basic doubts before I flash ROMs in my GN2. So, here goes:
Is it right that custom ROMs donot have some of the Samsung proprietary features such as Air View, Smart Rotation, Smart Stay, etc.? and
Are kernels also flashed in the same way as the ROMs are i.e., .zip flash via Recovery?
Thanks!

Hi,
1.) It is possible.
2.) Yes
1) yes, cyanogenmod rom paranoid rom will Disable Samsung applications, but there are still so many roms, like Android revolution HD, Crash rom ( I'm currently using now) , just google " the best custom rom for galaxy note 2" , those roms keep all of Samsung features + many system tweaks. Just try them.
2) exactly yes
Here, I'd like to advice to back your stock rom before flashing a custom rom. This is very important to recover your phone in case something went wrong
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
ALL TW ROMS have these options s whereas Aosp don't
Yes the same way to flash the kernel
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
Your question has been answered already but I would like to explain a bit more for others who can be confused with all this.
There are 4 kinds of custom ROM available.
TW (stock Samsung)
AOSP( Pure Google Android) Won't have any of the Samsung features
AOKP( Based on AOSP but with some more features) Won't have any of the Samsung features but they got the S-pen working.
MIUI (Chinese version of Android with very different style than others) ?????? not sure
ROMs and Kernels comes in 2 formats. ZIP and TAR.
If it's a ZIP file, you flash it in recovery using CWM, TWRP or PHIL.
If it's a TAR file, you need to put your phone in Download Mode and flash it with ODIN.
Custom ROM' almost always come in ZIP(never seen one using TAR but it's not impossible)
Official Samsung ROM almost always come in TAR files
Hope it helps.
