[Q] Newbie to EVO not to Android - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just looking for a quick response. I purchased and older EVO with hboot .97. And running the old 2.2. Just want to know what the best root option is. I was gonna use the universal root but Im antsy and dont wanna wait an hour for the download. I am versed in adb so I dont mind using it.
Thanks.

I used unrevoked. Just go to the website and it's pretty fast and easy. Once rooted I cant remember if it automatically turns s-off or if you have to flash unrevoked forever. I'm pretty sure it does it automatically. PM me if you have any questions on how to do it.

Thanks. What about nand off? I noticed some roms require that.

Unrevoked will give you s-off so you'll be fully rooted and able to flash whatever you want.

I think you mean to say nand unlocked. That is when you see s-off instead of s-on in the top of the bootloader screen. Like I said, I'm pretty sure when it roots it will turn s-off(unlock nand) automatically. If not go back to the website and click where it says unrevoked forever. Oh yeah dont forget to make sure you choose the correct phone when entering the website, lol. When you click on unrevoked forever it will give you the guide and somewhere in there it will tell you how to turn s-off and give you the download for it. Then you can go flashing away, ROMs that is.
My personal favorite is Myn's Warm rom, Riptides colorNclear w/slayers transitions theme, and calkulin's new kernel. This kernel will give you astounding battery life. Here's the links
Myn's Warm- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=793471
Riptide's theme, check out the whole thread for different colored dialers, task bars and such. Also I'm using v9.- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=727117&highlight=riptide
Calk's new kernel, I'm using 131- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876590

Thanks guys. Took a couple of tries but I got it rooted. Im gonna check on the s off.

Booted into bootloader. It says s-on. So I need to flash the Unrevoked Forever?

That's weird. It should have set it to off but no worries, just do unrevoked forever and you'll be golden.

yes, flash that and your golden

Thank you fellas. Everything is good to go. Im glad I made the switch, great phone, great people. See you in the forums.

Lol. Ill keep the dumb questions in this thread.
Can I flash Amon Ra Recovery through terminal emulator like the Hero?
su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recoveryname.img
??
Im just used to Amon Ra.
Or.... If you can just tell me how you typically wipe with CWM recovery.
And.... How to partition the SD card with CWM.

Ive been an AmonRa user since G1, And also most will tell you Ra is best for wiping, You dont really need to partition your sd card for the Evo, but do so if you wish. See you on the forums. Before I forget check out the Netarchy kernels ; )

I'm pretty sure that that is the correct command for flashing recovery, but I always just used ROM Manager to do it. You can download it from the market, and it even though it only works with clockwork, it does have an option to flash an alternate recovery, which would be Amon_Ra.

[Q] clockwork mod recovery to amonRa recovery??

FYI questions should go in the questions forum, development are for developers. If you have a question on the developers thread, post in there.
As for AmonRA vs Clockwork Mod. They are about the same. I have heard people have issues with ClockworkMod not wiping the dalvik/cache completely but I have heard that it does from other people.
One advantage of Clockwork Mod is you can use extra Rom Manager functions.

This shouldn't be in Dev, but I will answer this anyway. Easiest way to do this is via ROM Manager. Download it from the Market and when you go into the app, go to the bottom and it will say "Flash Alternate Recovery" (which would be Amon_RA) and you're set.
Sorry for posting in wrong spot. I didnt know. Thanks for the answers. That don't sound too hard. Thanks again.

I would first try it the Rom Manager way. Its the easiest way but for some reason mine doesnt take. If yours doesnt then do the flash_recovery method through ADB.

Maybe you need to enable Advanced Mode in the settings first? Hopefully, that isn't a paid feature.
For the EVO, I think the only option that's a premium feature is flashing the CM nightlies. Everything else should be accessable after enabling advanced mode in settings.
The amon recovery image has to be on the root of your sdcard for rom manager to find it. I have flashed back and forth through rom manager and i dont recall if i have advanced settings enabled. I use amon to wipe stuff and clockwork to flash. I do this because amon does not do file browsing but clockwork does.
You can definitely flash back and forth. And Rom Manager can download either recoveries before flashing. That's how I updated to the current amonRa. But you have to have Clockwork flashed in order to fully use Rom Manager.
Thanks I flashed to AR with the paid version of ROM Manager and it only too a minute. Thanks for the advice because I was wondering this question also.

How do I flash recovery with S-Off?

So I had to take my phone to Sprint. They flashed the original RRU back onto it.
I still have S-off though. So in order to root my phone again, do I need to go through the unrevoked method? Or is there a way I can just somehow flash clockworkmod recovery (through Hboot?), and then I'd be good to flash new ROMs from there?
Thanks.
adb amon ra
Search the forums, I remember reading about this specific issue, I believe you need to just push a custom recovery onto your phone and flash a rooted rom. Are you experienced with adb? Or I'm guessing you unrevoked 3'd your evo. Load amon ra and push that recovery back on.
if you're s-off try place on the root and flash this, then you should be good, you can flash a new rom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=764062&highlight=Recovery+hboot
I did try the search. No luck. Not good with adb but if I just have to put an image into my root directory and then flash it in hboot I can do that. I would just need the image

I can't see where you're referring to on the unrevoked website. I've been to both www.unrevoked.com & www.unrevoked.com/#evo and even www.unrevoked.com/recovery and the only options I have is to actually go through the entire "Painless root & reflash" process. I was hoping to just download only the clockworkmod PC36IMG image.

[Q] Trouble getting recovery image and superuser access

Hey guys I looked all over for a solution for hours and I didn't see a thread containing my exact problem/solution so I will post it here. Here is my problem:
I flashed TMartin's Gingersense Rom and thought it was flashable back to recovery, but I realized it was a complete system dump after doing so. I have downloaded the new Superuser update to 2.3.6.1 although the phone doesn't detect it. This is what it says: "an error occurred and su was not updated. A zip file (su-2.3.1-bin-signed.zip) has been placed on your sd card, please reboot into recovery mode and flash it to update your su binary."
My Evo doesn't think it's rooted even though it has the superuser app installed. I also tried using Rom Manager to reboot into recovery mode but it says this: "you must root your phone for Rom Manager to function. Superuser was not found at "/system/bin/su" or "/system/xbin/su". Use google search on your computer to find instructions to root your phone." I have also tried to turn it off and press "voldown+power" and it goes straight to the rom. I believe I've overwritten the recovery image and I even know where to begin. I had clockwork 2.6 and 2 nandroid back-ups before doing this. Is there something I'm missing? Please help!
same thing happened with me and a couple evo's on my xp pro box.
what i did was, i just started the process over from the beginning...one of them took a couple times to stick.

Well Tmartin had a flashable zip of the gingersense rom. In the thread that got closed, in the OP, there were a few links. One was for a flashable zip, and the others were the system dump, as you noted.
When you boot to the bootloader, does it show you S off, or S on? When you select recovery from the bootloader, what is your result? Do you get a black screen/red triangle? Or does it just hang at the splash or something? If you're S off, you should just be able to flash a PC36IMG of recovery, and then flash a new rom from there. If you're S on, and have no recovery, then you'll need to re root your phone.
How do I even go about doing that?
Oh woops I didn't see you reply k2buckley lol. I can't boot into the bootloader, it goes straight into the rom.

Shut down your device. Simultaneously press the DOWN volume button and the power button until your device starts. After a short pause, a few lines of text will scroll across the screen. You will then be in the bootloader menu. At the top, you should see either S-ON or S-OFF.

Just tried it. It doesn't boot into the bootleader, it just goes straight to the rom. I can imagine it has to be S-Off because it has superuser permissions (even though I can't access) it

You can't get to your bootloader? Are you on the Gingerbread Sense rom? If so, go to menu>settings>applications. Uncheck "fastboot". THen shut your phone off, and try to get to the bootloader again. Should work this time.

Yea, I only remember because it happened to me when I tested out that rom, lol. I too am running SalvageMod 1.2.1. It's been my daily for a bit now, just super smooth and stable for me. I was running some of the Salvage Nightlies too, which were good. The nightly 13 I tried had music controls on the lockscreen, which I'm a big fan of. It also came with Tiamat 3.3.7 kernel, which my phone hates. I went back to the stable build for now. I'm also curious to see Myn's next project. That interview that was on Good and Evo revealed that he's working on Warm Gingerbread. I keep hoping for one of those emails from Myn, with a nice link to some beta action!

Older EVO 4G HBOOT 2.10.0001

This phone was rooted already, then today I returned it to stock since the cyanogen7 that was on there did not... somehow... have the menu option to "update profile" I needed to change my phone number. I wanted to re-root, but I'm having trouble where to begin.
In the Power+Vol Down boot screen, it shows S-OFF, and HBOOT 2.10.0001
I cant make Revolutionary work because 2.15 is the lowest HBOOT it accepts.
If I choose the "recovery" option in that list, I get a black screen with a red triangle/exclamation point icon over an icon of the phone. I have to take the battery out to get the phone back on.
The phone does work, btw. But I miss the stuff I get when it's rooted. Anyway... what do I do now? How do I get the recovery/cyanogen7 on there if I cant get superuser permissions?
I used some other method back when I rooted this phone, but I haven't seen anything yet to spark my memory of the steps.
U are already s-off. No need for revolutionary. Go to dev thread and look for amon_ra recovery. Download it and follow directions to flash it. Then download whatever rom u want and flash that. The red triangle just means you have no recovery.

I thought Revolutionary was how I got the custom recovery on the phone, which I need before I can root? I;d like to put CWM on there, since I have a paid version of Rom Manager already, and I believe they work together well.

You'll have to uninstall rom manager as you need CWM recovery. To back up, simply backup all your apps and data in tb, boot into recovery, select nandroid restore/backup, selecet backup, and you NEED the first 3 checked [boot, system, data]. Also if its your first, backup wimax as well, then copy it to your pc for safe keeping, in case you ever lost your wimax keys.

There is no reason to "upgrade" to revolutionary. Unrevoked is the same thing as revo. Just unrevoked doesnt work with the newer hboots. If your already s-off in bootloader there is no difference. U can use any rom regardless if u used revo or unrevoked. The whole object of rooting is to get s-off. Once you have it there is nothing more you can do. Ive used both on unrevoked on my original evo. And revo on my newer refurb. There basically the same. Easy auto root pretty much.

Evo bricked?? Please help

OK so I just got this evo from my buddy and I can get into hboot but os will not boot and recovery will not mount sd card, and also s is on.

If it turns on, then it's not bricked.
Take the sd card out and put into a card reader. Put a stock rom pc36img on the root of the sd card and put it back in the phone and boot.
I tried that and it said version is older I think I'm not sure what exactly it said I'm at work right now. Where would be the best place to get a new software update for it

are you sure the phone is even rooted? If you have an active sprint account take it to the sprint store, they might be able to reset it back to factory default.
Also post the exact error message you get when trying to load the file. If we go by guessing we could be here a while.
Well it was rooted and flashed to cricket with cyanogenmod on it but my buddy did something in hboot that turned s on and made the sd card not mount in clock work mod. I will list all the info when I get home

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't think you needed root to flash a pc36img in the bootloader.
depends which one. The only one that will flash if you're s-on is the RUU for your phone and the Hboot has to match. If it doesn't you'll get the "older version" error. So, the phne needs to be rooted, then flash a custom recovery, preferably Amon Ra
I think he has to flash a ruu pc36img first cuz he cannot boot into the rom. Download the newest 4.54 pc36img and flash that. What does hboot version say?

Yeah, that's what I had gathered. The image I linked to was an unrooted stock image. He'll still have S-ON but he'll need to reflash, his recovery and the SU binaries.

I'm interested to see if it works. I also want to know how the hell he went from s-off to s-on, because unless his friend started sending software and commands to his phone I would imagine it would be impossible.
I'm starting to wonder if he flashed to cricket improperly and bricked the phone.

depends which one. The only one that will flash if you're s-on is the RUU for your phone and the Hboot has to match. If it doesn't you'll get the "older version" error. So, the phne needs to be rooted, then flash a custom recovery, preferably Amon Ra

What's wrong with clockwork mod? So much hate.
If you search, you'll see why, HOMIE!!!
Amon Ra is just better. It does a better job if wiping, for one, which is critical

ClockworkMod killed my mother and raped my dog. It also didn't back up my WiMax, so I lost my RSA keys when I wiped my phone.
