[Q] ReRooting a Rooted Htc Desire - Desire General

I already have a rooted htc desire phone with an early version of unrevoked but the problem is its still S-ON. Can i safely reroot with latest version of unrevoked and simply overite my already rooted phone to gain the latest recovery and S-OFF? or do i need to unroot first?

unrEVOked doesn't givce S-OFF - that's a seperate process - unless you have a CDMA Desire

[Q] Rerooting with Unrevoked 3.22

I already have a rooted htc desire running stock 2.2 rom s-on. Is it ok to use unrevoked 3.22 and reroot to gain permanent unlocked NAND flash?

There is no problem with trying Unrevoked again, esp if you're S-ON and want to change the Recovery. But why? For S-OFF, you should run Alpharev. But you probably know this already.

I really dont have any idea what is Alpharev,I got the phone already rooted from a friend. He says he had never tried installing a custom rom and I notice its S-on but thanks for the advice.
Btw, i just want to make sure if it is ok not to unroot and just simply overite with unrevoked?

Download the latest unrEVOked and install the modified USB drivers correctly! (search for the thread in the forums). I did everything as they said, and rooted my desire (with latest updates) without any problem.
use amon ra recovery image

Root

Has the HTC Desire CDMA with hboot 1.06 been rooted yet ?

alpharev X (still in beta so be careful) does work with 1.06 hboots, making device S-OFFed.
then you can either flash a custom recovery with fastboot and then with the recovery some custom ROMs
or after S-OFFing just run unrEVOked and it will root your current ROM
I thought Alpharev only worked on the GSM Desire.

Yes, the old alpharev (r18) only works for gsm desires.. The new alpharev (alpharev x) works for both desires.
But the thing is, in order to gain S-OFF, don't you need root? In some other places I read, to gain root you need S-OFF....
Please correct me if I'm wrong...

if it doesnt work try revolutionary
..and for alpharev, you must have a rooted stock froyo 2.2, so if you flashed a non stock rom, it probably wont work.

you don't actually need to be rooted, I've done the process (more than once) straight after using a RUU (and reverting to S-ON), as revo gains temproot and then is able to S-OFF
In fact, I start from the latest Leedroid HD.
I've redo the S-OFF with the Revolutionary beta app for windows and working very well.

[Q] S-OFF gone ?

I originally rooted my desire years ago when it came to Canada with unrevoked and flashed clockworkmod 2.5.0.1 Over the years, I flashed various ROMs and radios without issue. I was running leedroid ROMs for the longest time. Yesterday, I flashed a CM10.1 jellybean 4.2.2 based rom without issue.

I happened to go into my bootloader today for the 1st time in ages since adfree was giving me an error about writing to the /system partion and noticed S-ON !! Now I am asking myself did I ever have S-OFF or did I somehow loose it by flashing ROMs and radios over the years ? How can I get it back ? I obviously don't want to brick my phone.

I don't think unrevoked gives you s-off. It simply installs a custom recovery and roots.
Use revolutionary to s-off. But you will first need to update your hboot using an ruu.

Well, you should remember if you ever have s-off or not. But I think there is no need to have s-off to flash custom roms or recovery. Anyway you can root and s-off your phone anytime again. Flash a RUU Rom compatible to your phone and root your phone and s-off again. You can see guides for that in development section.
